College graduates may take up the study of law withone or more of many possible career goals in mind. Some enter law school so that they may eventuallypractice law. However, legal qualifications are notjust for lawyers.

Given that legal education is a dynamic encounter, reading law can be an empowering and enrichingexperience.

Whilst a law degree can most certainly lead to anexciting and challenging career as an advocate andsolicitor, it can also open the door to a wealth ofopportunities in almost every industry sector youcan think of.

You may be a successful lawyer and enter intopolitics, business, enforcement (police, immigrationand customs), domestic trade, judiciary (magistratesand judges), human rights activism, internationalfinance and banking or simply practice law in yourhome town or city.

Law affects all aspects of life and society and is themechanism for change employed by governmentsacross the globe. From the protection of life andliberty, through corporate law to internationalrelations, the law is centre stage. A degree inEnglish law is a highly regarded course of study.

Many of the most troubling moral and politicalissues that we face are addressed in our society aslegal issues. An acquaintance with the law, anawareness of some of the more important legaldecisions that have been made in the last few yearstells us more about ourselves than almost any otherinstitution or practice. Public debate aboutsurrogate motherhood, capital punishment, hatespeech, euthanasia, the electoral process andequality between the sexes is waged in terms oflegal principle and acted out in our courts.

In essence, from doing a law degree one can enterinto a wide variety of fields showing the flexibility ofhaving a law degree.

In view of a growing and an urgent need for amore holistic education, Brickfields Asia isintroducing a series of programs in addition tothe ‘A’ Levels and Foundation subjects, whichwill concentrate on the individual’s latentpotential and other necessary skills which willcomplement the pursuit of his or her courseand career.

Most students who have finished theirsecondary education, regardless of whichschool they come from, are ill-equipped totake on the more demanding courses whichrequire one to have a probing mind and criticalthinking. Many students are also found to havelow self – confidence which acts as ahindrance when it comes to group studies andspeaking up.

Another area that needs attention is‘independent thinking’. One of the biggestproblems plaguing our community is ‘herdmentality’. Students are afraid to thinkdifferently from others and that affects thequality of thought and hence the quality ofspeech and action.

Students go through a study and life skillsprogram as an induction program to preparethem not only for the course but also for theircareer. The program will focus on studytechniques, time management, goal setting, critical thinking and creativity.

Study techniques

Studying any subject must begin with a clearobjective as to what is it that needs to beachieved at the end. Once this is clearlydefined then the techniques will be become

apparent. Hence there is no one correcttechnique at any one time. As we know, moststudies are highly exam oriented and to acertain extent compromises on the real valueof education. Thus it is important that studyingtechniques must comprise of skills inextracting knowledge that is going to help thestudent, not just to pass exams but alsoprepare him for his/her future.

Time management

Students in general seem to have a greatchallenge in juggling their studies and all theother distractions which they deem to be a‘necessity’. This particular module will helpthem to prioritize their daily activitiesaccordingly. The program will help studentsdetermine what is ‘important’ and what is‘urgent’ and will equip the students to be alertto ‘time wasters’. This will enable them tooptimize their time by zeroing in on activitiesthat will enhance their potential and increasetheir personal productivity.

Goal setting

Research shows that most students do nothave clear and well defined goals and as aconsequence their activities are notconcentrated and they eventually lose focuson what is important. Their daily distractionstake over and failure in their exams becomesinevitable. Setting clear goals and the ‘knowhow’ to achieve them is a much needed skillfor students. Students must understand howthe mind functions and how to master it toextract its potential.

Critical thinking

Critical thinking requires a great deal ofindependent thinking which questions thenorm and challenges the ordinary pattern, which in turn is necessary for creativity andinnovation. Without critical thinking there canbe no personal progress. Here the studentswill be taught that questioning the norm isperfectly fine and in fact encouraged and thetype of questions that will cause thebreakthrough to happen. In this particularmodule students will become aware of theirown comfort zone and how it has becometheir limitation.

Creativity

As much as we all know that creativity isimportant, we must know what the obstaclesto creativity are. Experience and habit happensto be major obstacles to creativity. Here thestudents will be introduced to characteristicsof the right brain and the left brain.

Tudor Rickards – ‘At the moment of insightcreativity may well be the result of both sidesof the brain working together.’

Learning will become much more interestingand fun when it is done in a creative way. Hereagain it is all about breaking the existingmould and moving on in search of a moreeffective way of doing things. This module willalso include mind mapping which is a veryuseful tool to comprehend highly complicatedsubjects.
