The National Swine Nutrition Guide

Situation

• Many universities created their own state or regional nutrition guides – not uniform

• Many were in need of revisions

• Change in genetics & nutritional programs

• Swine NRC was from 1998

Challenges in Revising Guides

• Extension budgets were cut at most institutions

• Fewer faculty doing production-based nutrition

• Fewer Extension Specialists covering more areas

Partnership Created

US Pork Center of Excellence and leading Land Grant institutions worked together to:

• create a comprehensive education and extension effort

• to provide sound, science-based feed and nutrition information universally to U.S. pork producers

• update nutrient recommendations to improve nutrient utilization and

production efficiency

• A grant was written by the committee and funded by the United Soybean Board for the development of a NSNG

• Steering committee convened in 2008 and began the development of the National Swine Nutrition Guide (NSNG)

• Put together a list of needed factsheets and author or co-authors assigned

to each factsheet

• Committee first came to consensus on nutritional philosophies so all factsheets would be uniform

• Purpose was to enhance the understanding of practical swine nutrition, feeding principles and related management guidelines

• Authors developed individual factsheets that were given to two internal

reviewers & then revised

• Factsheets were then sent to two external reviewers for review

• Final changes made and then published

• $80 for the book, tables, and Formulator DVD if go to one of the six regional training sessions
