Why read with our children?
The sooner children are able to decode
the sooner they are able to comprehend and a combination of both leads to an
enjoyment of reading!
Why phonics?
Saying Sounds
• There are approximately 44 sounds (phonemes) in English language. • Sounds should be said in a ‘pure’ way. e.g. mmm not muh • Children will find it easier to blend sounds into words. • It is easier to blend m-a-t than muh-a-tuh.
• Learning ‘pure’ sounds help children recognise the sound in order to split
them up and spell words.
Phonics Scheme
Speed Sounds
• Sounds are split into Speed Sets • Set 1 • Set 2 • Set 3 (alternative letter combinations for sounds) Once children are fluent with Set 1 and 2 they are able to write any word in English, albeit phonetically.
