Mike Moore wins NSC Handicap Championship

This year’s club Handicap Championship was held on Thursday

evening, June 11th. Shooters were greeted with overcast skies, wind,

and a forecast of rain. By the end of the evening the wind had died

down, but a couple of squads of shooters did shoot at least part of their

round in the light to moderate rain showers. But nothing about the

weather dampened the enthusiasm of the participants. Due to the lead remediation project that closed the club for a good

portion of 2014, there was no club Handicap Championship contested

last year. So shooters were anxious to resume the tradition of the shoot

and crown a handicap champ. As usual the field was limited to 30

shooters, with squads going off starting at 6 pm and continuing every

30 minutes until the final squad took the field at 8:30 pm. Shooting

was finished by 9:30 pm, allowing 30 minutes for shoot-offs to settle

who would take home the trophies. The format of the shoot was 100 handicap targets, 25 each from 21, 23,

25, and 27 yards. Squads shot the first two rounds on trap 3, and then

moved to trap 2 to shoot the last 50. As the event coordinator, Bob Ash

did another outstanding job of making sure all of the details were

covered. Again this year club members were competing for fabulous

trophies. On offer were hand carved and hand painted duck decoys

sourced from an artist in Minnesota, mounted on wooden display

platforms created by club member Dave Horton. The trophies were

nothing short of spectacular. Shooters and club members were also treated to a full meal from the

Sportsman’s Grill. Jim Chakour and his assistants Joe Krol and Steve

Pfister cranked out chicken breast sandwiches, bratwurst, and burgers

to make sure no one went hungry. Fried sides included french fries,

onion rings, and lamb fries. There were also baked beans, chips, and

all the usual accompaniments. Desert was covered too, including a tub

of ice cream. There was also a wide variety of soft drinks available all

evening long. When it came time to shoot, Mike Moore set the tone early, posting a

blazing 94 (24-23-25-22) on squad 2. Other shooters tried to match his

score, but none were able, ensuring he would take home the High

Overall Champion’s trophy. Steve Pfister won the 27-yard trophy by posting a 24, while Nenad

Trickovski’s 23 was good for the 27-yard runner-up trophy. It took a shoot-off to decide the 25-yard winner’s trophy, with Jud

Mann outlasting Bob Ash after both posted 24’s earlier. The runner-up

trophy went to Bob Seetin with a score of 23, as Bob Ash was also in

the running for the 21-yard winner’s trophy. Trophies for the 23-yard category required a shoot-off to decide. Four

shooters qualified to compete for two trophies with scores of 23 in the

main event, but only three shooters took the line for the shoot-off. Jay

Spitz won the shoot-off and the 23-yard winner’s trophy with Tom

Coleman taking the runner-up award. Scott Calhoun was third in the

shoot-off, and the fourth qualifier was Bob Beyer who was not present

for the shoot-off. Bob Ash and Tom Jorstad had matching 24’s from the 21-yard line and

competed in the final shoot-off of the night which finished in the

pouring rain. Bob came out on top to take the top trophy for 21-yards,

with Tom settling for the runner-up trophy. Bob Ash also handed out two recognition awards as part of the

program. Jim Chakour and Scott Calhoun were presented with gifts

recognizing their contributions to the club, both specific to helping out

with the annual handicap championship and also for other work done

throughout the year on other club events.

Naperville Park District Senior Games Trapshooting competition hosted at Sportsman’s Park

This summer the Naperville Park District held their first-ever Senior Games. The Olympic-style competition was

open to anyone age 50 or older, and awards were given in many different types of competition. The Park District

approached the club and asked if we would assist in running the Trapshooting portion of the games.

For Trapshooting, there were separate divisions for men and women. While no women signed up to compete,

there were 12 men who signed-up for a chance to win a Senior Games award. NSC was represented by nine of our

members. John Colwell, Ray Courney, Art Dwight, Peter Johnson, Steve Melovic, Denny Mills, Jim Monk, John

Polich and Jay Spitz all took part.

The event was held on Thursday, June 25, and the format of the competition for the men was 50 targets total. The

first round was regular singles, shot from the 16-yard line. The event finished with a round of wobble trap from

the 16-yard line.

NSC member Art Dwight took home first place honors, with a total score of 49 (25-24). He was followed closely

by member Jay Spitz who grabbed second place with a score of 46 (24-22). Steve Melovic, also a club member,

earned the third place award with a score of 42 (23-19).
