He seems to be paralyzed, immobilized -- even dead. He is covered by a heavy stone; the stone of sin, of ignorance, of indifference, the stone of bad habits that have accumulated over the years. Perhaps we may desire to take away this stone and reach the living Lord, but we do not have the strength. ‘Who shall roll us away the stone?’ The women’s undertaking - humanly speaking - seems to have no hope of success. And yet, they have set out. Without knowing how they will be able to get into the sepulchre, they walk towards him. In the same way, without knowing how the obstacle which may prevent us from reaching the Savior can be removed, let us trust. We can make the first move: we can get up; we can set out. Let us walk towards Jesus who is separated from us by the heavy stone, and allow faith and hope to guide us. The women are not going empty-handed to the sepulchre. They ‘had brought sweet spices that they might come and anoint him’. We, too, can bring something to the sepulchre. Even if we are stained with very serious sins, we can bring a beginning of good will, the little we have of love, some generosity towards another, our feeble prayer. Doubtless our poor gifts will not bring about the removal of the stone, for our access to the risen Jesus and to the power of his Resurrection remains the magnificent and entirely free gift of divine mercy, but the fact that we do not journey towards the sepulchre with hands that are quite empty will show that our hearts are not quite empty too. Where are the ‘spices’ with which we wish to anoint Jesus? And, behold, a miracle has taken place. ‘They saw that the stone was rolled away.’ The women would never have been able to move such an obstacle. But God himself has provided for this. The Year of Grace of our Lord Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: ‘Let love be your highest goal!’ (1 Cor 14:1 NLT). May we truly rejoice in this season of the Resurrection of Christ. And offer to him the little we have, with joy, so that he can make miracles happen in our own lives, our own relationships, our own families. ‘For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe’ (1 Timothy 4:10 ESV). AMEN.

“I AM THE VINE, YOU ARE THE BRANCHES” (John 15:5)

MAY / JUNE 2019

The Myrrh-Bearing Women

The third Sunday of the Easter season is called the ‘Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women’, or the ‘Myrrophores’. This

Greek name means ‘the spice-bearers’. It refers to the women who came to anoint Jesus’s body in the tomb, and to

whom the Resurrection was first announced. The episode is related in the Gospel for the liturgy (Mark 15:43 - 16:8),

and the Church makes it the special object of our meditation for this Sunday.

At daybreak on the Sunday, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome go to the sepulchure. Our days

would indeed be blessed if, every day ‘very early in the morning’ and more particularly on ‘the first day of the week’,

our thoughts turned to Jesus’ victory over death. It was at ‘the rising of the sun’ that the women went to the sepulchure.

Jesus is the true sun, who should light our day from its first moments. The whole day becomes different when it starts

with Jesus.

The women do not know how they will be able to get to the body of Jesus: ‘Who shall roll us away the stone from the

door of the sepulchre?’. The gospel makes it clear that it ‘was very great’. Many of us might feel that the women’s

question applies to ourselves. For, in many souls, Jesus seems to be buried as if in a sepulchre. He seems to be

paralyzed, immobilized -- even dead. He is covered by a heavy stone; the stone of sin, of ignorance, of indifference, the

stone of bad habits that have accumulated over the years. Perhaps we may desire to take away this stone and reach the

living Lord, but we do not have the strength. ‘Who shall roll us away the stone?’

The women’s undertaking - humanly speaking - seems to have no hope of success. And yet, they have set out. Without

knowing how they will be able to get into the sepulchre, they walk towards him. In the same way, without knowing how

the obstacle which may prevent us from reaching the Savior can be removed, let us trust. We can make the first move:

we can get up; we can set out. Let us walk towards Jesus who is separated from us by the heavy stone, and allow faith

and hope to guide us.

The women are not going empty-handed to the sepulchre. They ‘had brought sweet spices that they might come and

anoint him’. We, too, can bring something to the sepulchre. Even if we are stained with very serious sins, we can bring

a beginning of good will, the little we have of love, some generosity towards another, our feeble prayer. Doubtless our

poor gifts will not bring about the removal of the stone, for our access to the risen Jesus and to the power of his

Resurrection remains the magnificent and entirely free gift of divine mercy, but the fact that we do not journey towards

the sepulchre with hands that are quite empty will show that our hearts are not quite empty too. Where are the ‘spices’

with which we wish to anoint Jesus?

And, behold, a miracle has taken place. ‘They saw that the stone was rolled away.’ The women would never have been

able to move such an obstacle. But God himself has provided for this.

The Year of Grace of our Lord

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: ‘Let love be your highest goal!’ (1 Cor 14:1 NLT). May we truly rejoice in this season

of the Resurrection of Christ. And offer to him the little we have, with joy, so that he can make miracles happen in our

own lives, our own relationships, our own families. ‘For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on

the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe’ (1 Timothy 4:10 ESV). AMEN.

2018-2019

We, the Committee, want to express our sincere appreciation

and thank you to Father John and Father Constantine for their

spiritual guidance, support and informative videos and

information about our Greek Orthodoxy.

Also, our gratitude and appreciation to George and Ioana

Tseheridis, Kathy Tseheridis and family. Kenos, Spyros and

Patty Rados and Philoptochos for their generosity and support

in preparing and donating and hosting the delicious food for

our Senior luncheons. We cannot thank you enough. God

Bless You.

We have had an exceptionally successful year so far. We

continue to look for different speakers, events, trips and

continuing to find ways to reach and recruit more seniors.

We meet the first Tuesday of each month at 11:30 am. There

will be no meeting in May. Our next meeting will be June

4th. Off for the summer until September.

I cannot thank the Committee enough for their dedication,

commitment and caring and for their enthusiasm for coming

up with different ideas and things to do. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Julie Sarres, Chairmen

Sophia Christian Dimitra Kapogianis

The California Samaritan Foundation would

like to thank you for supporting our Annual

Dinner Dance this past November benefitting

the SOS Children’s Villages Greece. Thanks

to your generous contributions, we raised

$16,000. With this donation, SOS Children’s

Villages will be able to cover part of the

needed (medical, educational, food, clothing,

therapies, etc.) expenses of the children

living at the SOS Children’s Village in Vari.

Your support to this organization’s work in

Greece gives another dimension to the

meaning of “giving”, to the meaning of

“solidarity” and strongly proves that “we are

one Family”, no matter how far we may live

from one another.

St. John’s Greek School - Greek Independence Day - March 24, 2019

Our younger groups helped our Greek School celebrate Greek Independence Day by performing for their

luncheon after church. The dancers performed suites they had been practicing for the crowd who

congregated to celebrate this religious and historical day. What a wonderful way to celebrate our heritage!

OC Greek Fest - Church Festival - May 17 - 19, 2019

All our Greek Dance groups are excited to participate again in this year’s OC Greek Fest. It’s our dancers

chance to entertain friends, guests, and neighbors at out church festival. The various groups will be

participating at different times over the weekend. The schedule will be announced shortly before the

festival. Please come out to support out groups while they present the suites of dances they have been

preparing. We look forward to seeing you there!

St. John’s Greek Dance Program - 2019 - 2020 Dance Year

The new incoming dance board for the 2019 - 2020 dance year has been meeting with regularity to organize

the dance ministry program in support of the long standing tradition at St. John the Baptist in Anaheim, to

preserve and promote the Greek culture through folk dance and maintain the priority to keep our youth

actively engaged in our church.

As we begin to wind down the current dance year, we have used the remaining months of spring to

accelerate our planning process for the next 2019 - 2020 dance year commencing this fall.

The first priority was to assess, evaluate and build the instruction staff to support a full-fledged program that

we have come to appreciate over the years. This process revealed 6 vacancies that needs to be filled. We

have recruited dance directors, as well as volunteers to assist the instruction staff in supportive roles related

to costumes, props, research, fellowship and fun in support of the dance ministry program who wish to serve

the church in this capacity.

We are blessed with an abundance of young families and children who are actively participating in the

liturgical life of the church, ministries and associated activities. Greek dance binds together our love for

faith, culture, dance and preservation of our traditions, both religious and culturally.

The planning process is well on the way and will continue throughout the summer as we will anxiously

await the start of yet another new Ecclesiastical Year. We will continue to inform you of our progress and

important dates in future communications.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish, youth and dance ministry.
