for various reasons this bird has a bad reputation, especially if you’ve inadvertently parked your car
under their night roosts! Introduced into Cape Town by Cecil rhodes, this bird has been exceptionally successful, having extended its range in South Africa and has now been reported in Namibia.
A first glance shows a dark drab coloured bird but on close inspection, in bright sunlight the plumage reveals varied iridescent greens, blues and oily black overlaid with white spots. In breeding plumage the throat feathers become elongate and are highly prized by fly fishermen in tying their flies.
Their song is a warbled mixture of squeaky notes but includes lots of mimicry.

PrEPArING fOr LIfE IN UNCErTAIN TIMESHow the process of education has changed over time! A few centuries ago, getting an education was the exclusive reserve of the rich and powerful. The most valuable knowledge was locked up in books, often written in Latin and kept in closed libraries, accessible only to the chosen few. It's probably why scientific and technological progress was so slow for so many millennia — so few people were allowed to study and build on the ideas. With the emergence of formal and compulsory schooling and open public libraries, and fuelled by a growing population, the sharing and mixing of knowledge contributed to the industrial revolution in the late 18th century. The 'common man' was now able to take part in invention and to develop new ideas and products and create wealth for himself. The later emancipation of women would double the pool of brain power. When the Internet explosion of the 1990's happened, more than making a rapidly growing body of knowledge available to the masses, it allowed anyone to add to it — and how we have added! On the positive side, it has enabled almost anyone to find out about almost anything… instantly. You can study and self-learn a new discipline at almost no financial cost. I believe this mass mixing of ideas has been behind the exponential rise in scientific and social developments in recent times. On the downside a lot of poor and incorrect information has been added to the pool, so finding and discerning what is reliable and useful has become an an essential skill.With the uncertainty of global economies and job markets, simply preparing for a single career direction has become very risky. The children of today need to prepare to be flexible and adaptable. Last month I discussed the various certificates of compliance that sellers must obtain when they sell their homes. Few home owners are aware that a property may not be rented out without the landlord having a valid electrical certificate of compliance (ECOC) and that tenants should ask to see the certificate before they enter into a lease agreement.
It is the obligation of the seller/landlord to provide these certificates. The owner can either ask the Estate Agents to provide names of electricians, plumbers or gas installers or make use of someone they know. Whatever you decide it is important that you check that these providers are registered with the relevant authorities.
If a property incurs any damage as a result of an electrical fault the insurance company will not pay out any claim unless the homeowner can provide them with a valid electrical certificate. If any tenant suffers harm as a result of a faulty electric fence or faulty electrical system they would have a claim against the homeowner.
What is not clearly understood by owners and buyers is that electricians do not have to guarantee that the electrical system is in working order, only that it is safe and that a test certificate
must accompany the ECOC.
The most common question about plumbing certificates is what a plumber is expected to inspect. A common check would be that storm water is NOT discharged into the sewerage system. We often find that pools are backwashed into the sewerage system and that during alterations water from gutters is illegally diverted into drains. Another would be that the water meter registers only when the tap is open and stops completely when closed. This is to control water wastage from homes. Sellers must ensure that the plumber who issues the certificate is qualified to do so.
For electric fence certificates, what happens when a Sectional Title or Security Estate property is sold? Firstly, only certified installers may erect fences. There are currently only about 300 accredited installers in the country. Secondly, the responsibility lies with the Body Corporate or Homeowners Association to provide these certificates not with the individual owners.
More and more service providers are starting to offer the “full package” and this could be to an owner’s advantage, both for convenience and for accreditation, as it would be easier to establish if a single provider is suitablly qualified and registered with the relevant authorities.

diaMond annivERsaRy FoR colin and baRbaRa MuRchCongratulations to Colin and barbara Murch who were married in Gosport, Hampshire on 19 September 1953. After meeting at a royal Navy Dance when barbara was 19, they developed their relationship through letter writing while Colin was stationed in Egypt, serving in the rAf.
Their son Christopher, who was born in Cornwall, was delighted when the family moved to South Africa in 1968 — they all enjoyed the sunny weather. Christopher and his wife blessed Colin and barbara with four grandchildren.
Colin and barbara have lived in Thornton since 1975. They have had happy working careers and have always had a love for travel. They have been happily settled in Thornton Place since 2009. Their strongest advice for a long happy marriage — never let the sun go down on a quarrel.

The maximum effective rate of CGT for individuals is 13.3% of any Capital Gain. The event that usually triggers this tax is the sale of immovable property. For your primary residence, the Capital Gain must be more than R2 million before taxation occurs. If you did renovations - as opposed to repairs - to improve the value of your home this is a deduction against any Capital Gain but be careful to keep proper accounts to prove the cost of your improvements. The sale of any house that is not your primary residence is subject to CGT without the R2 million rebate.

bEach clEanuP by thE scoutsWe congratulate 10 year old cub scout, Sara beere who organised a successful beach clean up at Milnerton as part of the requirements for her Leaping Wolf Badge, which is a challenge like the Springbok badge, but for the younger cubs. The clean-up was a huge success, helped along by good weather and a team of helpers who worked hard and had great fun on the beach. A special thanks to parents, siblings, Scouters Sam (baloo) and Christian (rikki) who also got down and 'dug' in. A big thank you to Alison and Sara beere for a very successful beach Clean up.

The Camp Sonshine Africa scholarships were initiated to provide scholarships for primary school, because without
a good primary school foundation the children who need the high school scholarships that are available are mostly unable to cope in these schools.
The Camp Sonshine Africa scholarship program was set up to pay for children from disadvantaged local communities to attend Pinelands North Primary School. The program is holistic in approach, providing funding and ensuring that children and their families have everything they need in order to ensure their long-term success. Needs vary from child to child, but could include transport to and from school, daily assistance with homework, educational assessments, general health assessments, extra lessons and attendance at school meetings.
Once a child reaches high school age, Camp Sonshine assists the children and their family in finding high school scholarships, or failing that, they continue to assist them through high school.
This fund also assists children who have fallen behind in their education and are not up to grade level. They are given
Kumon Maths and English lessons, which help them to fill in the missing pieces and allow them to reach grade level. Kumon is not a grade based system, but rather builds on existing knowledge (no matter how small). The aim of Kumon is to unleash each child's potential to love learning, by improving confidence and self-esteem, and encouraging self-discipline and a good daily study habit. There is no failing in Kumon, because each child works at his or her own carefully monitored level.
Camp Sonshine Africa is a registered NPO (# 075-041) and has a Trust fund set up specifically for education. This fund is supported purely by individuals who are willing to invest in a child's future and who want to help break the cycle of unemployment and poverty in our beautiful country.

As Head of Sport at Cannons Creek Primary School, Katelynn shared her experience of how to get
great results from a small school, when competing with larger more established schools. The Discovery Vitality Summit was held in Johannesburg from 15th to 17th August, and Katelynn was an invited speaker and panel participant on the role of the coach in a dynamic school environment. Katelynn was in good company, surrounded by legends in the
Sports and Health world such as Professor Tim Noakes, Tyler Hamilton, Dr ross Tucker, Gary Kirsten and Dr brian Wansink.
Passion, oPtimism, and relevanCeKatelynn has a strong conviction that children should be able to relate to their coach and says "The role of a coach changes depending on the child's needs at the time. The coach needs to be adaptable, willing to learn, optimistic and driven, passionate, and relevant. A four year old wants to see the coach getting down on the ground and getting dirty with them, they need to see the coach having fun through sport so that they can relate sport to fun. There needs to be a great deal of trust between the coaches, the children and the parents".
Fast traCkingWith small school numbers such as those at Cannons Creek, there are naturally fewer players to choose from which results in carefully selected players being “fast-tracked” — a practice where certain players are able to play against older players. This provides excellent growth opportunities
for players, although they are continuously monitored by sports coaches at Cannons Creek to ensure that they are benefiting from the process — and making sure they having fun, are learning and are happy."
tournaments and events"Nurturing a belief in themselves is important and seeing by example is a positive influence for the children. In this vein we organise our own tournaments, even though we are a small school. We now host 3 hockey festivals a year with over 800 children attending. Our water polo event which is in its 2nd year has attracted teams nationally. We bring in provincial and national players to coach in our clinics, and to show the children that hard work can bring great results for anyone".

“This, I think, is a job for you, Chris,” said the principal, fixing me in his unblinking gaze. “I think you can do it for us.”
10 September 1990 was a noteworthy date. The government had at last made a meaningful announcement about moving towards non-racial state schools,
and that left us four months before our gates could open to children of all races, if we could do the groundwork, secure a vast majority parent vote, and find the right set of pupils!
The possibility of becoming an “open school” was crucial to riverway High, for two reasons. first, it was simply the right democratic thing to do; the time was ripe. The second aspect was that our pupil numbers were consistently dropping and had reached a low of 240; we had already had to retrench one teacher. but we were directly on the bus routes, the railway line, and the taxi highways. We believed that numbers of township pupils would be able to get to our school – and that they would want to!
Was I, indeed, the right person to co-ordinate the school’s efforts to approve an open policy, then find and accommodate an influx of new pupils?"

I once read in a professional article that during a normal day approximately 25% of our brain's activity is occupied with the processing of visual data. I mentioned this concept while teaching an Art class one day and then elaborated on it: “This implies that we rest our minds when we close our eyes”… Then something unexpected happened. Suddenly, I could have heard a pin drop in my classroom. My pupils were testing my theory. All eyes were closed
and there was absolute silence… from that time on, whenever I had an important concept to elucidate or announcement to make, I asked my pupils to close their eyes for a minute or two so that they could rest, hear, focus and absorb… by briefly 'switching off the lights', not only were they not distracted by others, but their minds were able to rest during the busy school day. by Shelley Gauld, Sans Souci Girls’ High School

There's no doubt, information technology has revolutionized teaching. Nowadays “classroom
flipping” is the norm, where pupils teach themselves the “information” (which is readily available on the net) at home, then come to school and learn to interpret and apply this knowledge in the classroom under the supervision of their teachers. This is the reverse of what used to happen before.
Lessons can now be recorded 'live' and uploaded to sites such as YouTube so that pupils can review a lesson when they get home. Pupils who are off sick no longer need to miss lessons — they can simply download that day’s lessons and work
through them at their own pace.
Choices of subjects are no longer restricted to what is offered at your school. Pupils can now join virtual classes anywhere in the world; they effectively have an almost limitless choice in subjects. The only 'limitation' is that most of what is available does not count towards the National Senior Certificate. Enter primary school and the range of education costs can be equivalent to one year at UNISA, or Intec College, or even more than one year’s tuition at any given South African university. Although UCT is expensive, its fees are dramatically lower than those charged by the top-end private schools in Cape Town. The reality is that our parents’ generation was never faced with real education costs until tertiary education, at which point they experienced a massive price hike for the then-considered-exorbitant costs of tertiary education. To put that into perspective, a Grade 2 education in a reputable government school in 1975 cost r8 per year, at a time when bread cost 17c a loaf. In other words, one year’s education cost the equivalent of 47 loaves of bread. Now you might be paying the equivalent of 2 699 loaves of bread!
The South African education system — demographics, costs and syllabi included — has evolved
dramatically over the past 40 years. In many ways it is unrecognisable from its apartheid-era predecessor, particularly when it comes to fees. At the top end of the price range, parents can now expect to pay as much for top quality daycare with professional staff and small classes, as they would for a b.Comm degree at UCT. In the mid-range, affordable daycare is considerably more costly than a b.Comm or bA degree at NMMU or UNISA.
In order to fund for additional expenses such as a car or accommodation, during your child’s tertiary education, our advice is to avoid funding through insurance-based education policies. These policies can be inflexible with fees and penalties in the event of early cancellation or termination. The two most practical methods of funding for additional education costs are through unit trusts or one’s access bond. A unit trust portfolio offers complete flexibility with relatively low investment fees. If you’re disciplined when it comes to saving, your access bond provides an excellent vehicle for additional savings.

a love For teaChingDynamic personality Ann Morton has been Principal of PNPS since 1997 and comments that it is unusual for a co-ed school to have a woman principal. Teaching is her first love — she says the school community is amazing, and she would not change her job for the world.
thinking skills as a suBjeCtThe school governing body supports Ann in her quest for continual improvement in the school, looking to include her ideas gained from international travel. One such trip was to New Zealand where she found a school which concentrates on thinking skills, rather than rote learning. They model their ideas on ‘thinking gurus’ like Edward de bono and his six “thinking hats”. The implementation of thinking skills as a subject is helpful for all students and especially for gifted students who can learn to utilise their high IQ with effective thinking skills.
looking at eduCation in FinlandAnne's most recent trip in April this year was to finland with a group of 20 educators from South Africa to study the very successful finish education system. Anne was the only Western Cape Principal to attend this event, arranged by fEDSAS, the national representative organisation for school governing bodies.
The finish government ensures that
schooling from pre-primary to university, including vocational training is free. The education system is guided by values such as trust, respect, appreciation of learning, tolerance of individuality, fairness, a sense of community responsibility and co- operation. There is a great deal of respect for teachers and more trust between learners, teachers, parents and the community as a whole.
Teaching is a sought after profession in finland with only 10% of applicants being accepted. Kinder-garden teachers have bachelor degrees. Class and subject teachers have masters degrees. Vocational trainers have degrees with 3 years experience in the industry and are encouraged to have a business of their own to keep up with current trends in the field.
Children with special needs are accommodated in the regular school system as far as possible, and classes are small, with a maximum set at 25 per class. Another feature that stabilises the schooling system is the fact that the school curriculum is only changed about every 12 years and is not linked to political change.
the PrinCiPal has an oPen doorAnn Morton is keen to see as many of these principles and values instilled in the education system in South Africa and in her school in particular. Already children who have difficulty socialising at break
times are welcome to come to her office to collect a budgie that Ann has tamed. Ann is an animal lover, which is evident by the guppies and birds in her office and in the school foyer. She is a committee member of the Cape Province Dog Club and she enjoys dog training. As well as a love of teaching and travel, Ann enjoys reading, taking photographs and collecting and making teddy bears.
In keeping with the theme of education in this edition, Ann Morton, Principal of Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) tells us about some of her travel opportunities, supported by FEDSAS, that enable local educators to investigate successful teaching methods that could be implemented in South Africa.

sPRing FloWERs on thE WEst coast

It was such a glorious day, when we made the impromptu decision to drive to Langebaan. The plan was to visit the Postberg reserve inside the West Coast National Park. but when we eventually got to the main gate, it seemed that the rest of Cape Town had had the same fabulous idea. Eish. That queue wasn’t going anywhere slowly, never mind fast.
We gave up on that plan, and drove onwards to Langebaan, hoping to find a peaceful spot to picnic at the seashore. Haphazardly following some cars, though, we suddenly found ourselves just north of the northern entrance gate to the Park — which neither of us had ever been to. People had pulled off at the side of the road to wander amidst a most extraordinary field of flowers, OUTSIDE the park. We took some pics, and then thought — we’ve come this far, let’s go in. So we did… and ended up picnicking at the Seeberg Viewing Site — which has the most EXTrAOrDINArY display of colourful flowers. It was a photographer’s HEAVEN.
The quickest way to the Park from Cape Town is to follow the coastal route: take the r27 northwards, past Table View, Melkbosstrand and Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, and past the holiday resort of Grotto bay and the fishing village of Yzerfontein.

MExican coRn salad1 x 340 g tin whole kernel corn, drained1 x 400 g tin red kidney beans, drained150 g cherry tomatoes, quartered2 spring onions, thickly sliced2 slices feta, cut in cubes½ cucumber, cut in cubes30 fresh coriander leaves30 fresh mint leaves50 g plain, good quality nachos, coarsely broken
salad dressing60 ml (¼ k) olive or avocado oil30 ml (2 tbsp) lemon juice15 ml (1 tbsp) red wine vinegar5 ml (1 tsp) ground cumin2,5 ml (½ tsp) ground coriander30 ml (2 tbsp) each chopped fresh coriander and mint leavessalt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
1. Mix all the salad ingredients, except the herbs and nachos, in a large mixing bowl.
2. Salad dressing: Mix all the ingredients together and season to taste.
3. Stir the herbs into the salad just before serving. Pour over half of the salad dressing and mix well. Sprinkle with nachos and serve immediately with the remaining salad dressing.
tip Add 1 avocado, sliced, to the salad.
Serve with homemade ice tea or an ice cold cider.

This recipe was a team effort between myself, my colleague Ashleigh and Kaye Cox from AMC Cookware a few
years ago. I have since used this recipe many times for cooking demonstrations, shared it with family and friends and often serve it when entertaining. The response is more often than not, the same. People expect just salad ingredients and some beans (which rarely impresses), however one taste and everyone is hooked. The cumin, coriander and mint add a special zing that is surprising – and deliciously Mexican. The flavours, textures and colours make it moreish.
September is also Heart awareness month,
which is a great reason to add more goodness to our meals. The beans are low GI, making it a perfectly healthy addition to any meal. It keeps your blood sugar levels balanced, fills you up, lowers cholesterol and is packed with good fibre.
The salad is really easy to prepare and versatile. It‘s a delicious alternative to a salad with your ‘braai month’ meals over the coals or a roasted chicken. I love it as a light vegetarian meal and it can even be packed in a lunch box – just remember to keep the nachos separate until you’re ready to enjoy it.
