January 2017The Prix Elysée Nominees’ BookWith the support of Parmigiani Fleurier

Published by the Musée de l’Elysée in partnership with Editions Photosynthèses in Arles (France), this book presents the projects of the eight nominees for the second edition of the Prix Elysée. Isabelle Blanc & Olivier Hilaire, Elina Brotherus, Matthias Bruggmann, David Jiménez, Sofie Knijff, Jim Naughten, Emeka Okereke and Robert Zhao Renhui were selected by the museum from among more that 440 candidates from around the world.

They each received a contribution of CHF5,000 and were given carte blanche to begin a new project, each one presenting his or her initial results in an artist’s book. These books, presented together in a box, invite the reader to delve into the privacy of a work in progress while providing an overview of contemporary photographic practices.

“We hoped to do even better for the second edition of the Nominees’ Book by teaming up with Éditions Photosynthèses in Arles. Together with its artistic director, Marco Zappone, we took the gamble by publishing actual artists’ books presented together in a box. The resulting book-as-object presents eight unique universes and the museum’s point of view that allows them to co-exist”, emphasizes Pascal Hufschmid, head of development and the Prix Elysée.

The book will be used by the international jury to select the winner who will receive CHF80’000 to be divided between the completion of the proposed project and the publication of the accompanying book within one year. The nominees’ and the winner’s books will be printed by one of the Sandoz Family Foundation printing companies.

The Prix Elysée is a prize supporting artistic production in the fieldof photography. The result of a partnership between the Musée del’Elysée and Parmigiani Fleurier, it offers financial help and curatorial guidance to artists with a passion for photography and books, so they can take a decisive step in their career.

From January 25 to April 30, 2017No vertical limit. Mountain photography

The exhibition No vertical limit. Mountain photography, the first of its kind, is based on the premise that photography invented the mountain landscape by revealing it to the eyes of the world. Photography is heir to a certain idea of the mountains and of the sublime, closely linked to pictorial romanticism. Until the 19th century, the mountain was considered to be “God’s country”, a cursed and surreal place, inaccessible to man. The pioneers of mountain photography revealed summits that had not yet been conquered.

With almost 300 prints on view, three quarters of which are from the Musée de l’Elysée’s collections, Daniel Girardin, chief curator at the museum and curator of the exhibition, gives pride of place to prints from every period, including many contemporary works. “The mountains and especially the European Alps are the strong point of the Musée de l’Elysée’s collections. Among the treasures form the collections exhibited here, there are plaques by Gabriel Lippmann, prints by René Burri, Emile Gos, Francis Frith, Adolphe Braun and William Donkin, as well as by contemporaries such as Balthasar Burkhard, Matthieu Gafsou, Pierre Vallet and Iris Hutegger.”

The exhibition is organized around four approaches to mountain photography:• scientific photography, with many prints of glaciers which helped studying rocks and became a visual documentation of geology• travel photography, which facilitated the sale of hundreds of prints to tourists as of the 1860s• mountaineering photography, revealing inaccessible mountain landscapes• fine-art photographyThese four approaches come together as the visitor moves through the exhibition.

The exhibition reveals the formal strategies used by photographers to present the mountain: horizontality, verticality, frontality and low-angle shots or aerial views. The exhibition also highlights the techniques used by photographers: the large formats of the 19th century, panoramas, stereoscopic photographs and the very large digital formats used today.

To accompany the exhibition, an eponymous book will be published by the Musée de l’Elysée with Editions Noir sur Blanc. Supervised by Daniel Girardin / January 2017 / 21 x 27,2 cm, hardcover, about 250 pages, French and English versions / Price: about 50.-

From May 31 to September 24, 2017Slides. The History of Projected Photography

The Musée de l’Elysée presents the first exhibition devoted to the history of the slide, from its inception in the second half of the 19th century to today. Whereas the history of photography was built around the photographic print, the photographic projection underwent a major development as of the last third of the 19th century, borrowing from the tradition of magic lantern shows.

For a long time confined to the realm of teaching, public lectures and popular entertainment, photographic projection also became increasingly popular among amateur photographers. Some well-known professionnal photographers already used the slide in the first half of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until the decade from 1960-1970 that this type of presentation really took hold within the artistic community when conceptual artists adopted it as an alternative means of expression.

The exhibition is organized into four major sections, each devoted to a different aspect of this type of photographic presentation : the light image, the setup, the sequence and the session. The selection covers the diversity of these practices in order to emphasize its impact on visual culture.

The selection consists of more than 20 projections and brings together different media – slide objects, prints, projectors, original documentation and videos (reconstitutions).

An extensive catalogue co-published by the Musée de l’Elysée and Editions Noir sur Blanc will accompagny the exhibition.

The unexpected and the undiscovered await the visitor every year at the Nuit des images. For just one night, the Elysée gardens make room for poetry, magic and emotion to celebrate photography in all of its forms: publications, installations and projections designed for adults and children alike. On the occasion of the exhibition Slides. History of Projected Photography, which will take place at the same time at the Musée de l’Elysée, the Nuit des images will enhance our reflections with original interventions that cast a new light on possible forms of projection. Among them, the projected shadow will be one of the subjects explored by several artists, including Emmanuelle Antille who will propose a project combining dance and video.

In addition to the announcement of the winner of the second Prix Elysée, as well as numerous projections and cartes blanches for institutions coordinating the activities in the garden, the Book Fair will propose a new way to discover books within the framework of “Pecha Kucha”, and will provide artists the opportunity to present their publications via a projection.

In 2017, the focus will also be on interactive activities so that both children and adults can discover photography hands-on, and within this context, the mysteries of projection. Faithful to the commitment to using workshops to initiate visitors into historic photography, the Nuit des images will once again present “Le saut dans le vide” by Yves Klein in a mordant rendition.

“Little On Print”, initiated in 2016 and proposing photography books for children as well as activities, will once again be present in 2017.

So that the event can be an even greater success, the Nuit des images will also host concerts, bars and food stands so that the public, as always, can partake in a celebratory and memorable moment with family and friends.

From October 25, 2017, to January 7, 2018Gus Van Sant/Icons

The exhibition Gus Van Sant/Icons proposes the first Swiss retrospective of the films and artistic creations of the American filmmaker. A genuine multi-disciplinary journey, it is divided into five sections, each in turn exploring an aspect of Gus Van Sant’s creative force and outlining the contours of a bountiful and impertinent universe.

“Photography” encompasses a selection of Polaroid pictures taken by Gus Van Sant during casting sessions for his first films. Hundreds of actors, writers and anonymous individuals posed for his camera. Even after having abandoned his Polaroid at the end of the 1990s, the filmmaker continued to make photographs, especially for fashion magazines and rock bands. “Cinepark” gives us a glimpse of Gus Van Sant’s cinema, a sensitive template of this moment in post-modern American history. The figurehead of the “independent” cinema revival, Van Sant was the instigator of an artistic liberty that radiates from the fringes. His heterogeneous filmography forces us to question the concept of a film auteur. “Constellations” evokes Gus Van Sant’s artistic filiations, from the omnipresence of his city of adoption, Portland, to the major influences that shaped his esthetic – among others, the Beat Generation and the American writer William S. Burroughs.Gus Van Sant’s paintings and drawings were done at different times in his life. Some of the collages date from the 1970s, whereas his series of large-format watercolors exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles date from 2011. Exhibited in the “Painting” section, they provide an unexpected complement to the very eclectic artistic universe of Gus Van Sant.Lastly, the “Music” section expresses Van Sant’s interest in film music that he sees as a language of its own. This section contains the original soundtracks specially written for his films, original creations of Van Sant himself, as well as a selection of music videos that he made for David Bowie, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Hansons, among others.

A book published by Actes Sud, supervised by Matthieu Orléan, accompagnies the exhibition. A Gus Van Sant retrospective will take place at the Cinémathèque suisse in the fall of 2017 (November - December with a launch at the Capitole at the end of October).

From October 25, 2017, to January 7, 2018Unfamiliar Familiarities : Outside Views on Switzerland

Switzerland’s image has been significantly shaped by photographs dedicated to tourism. With spectacular mountain panoramas, rural idylls or portraits of local people the country could be successfully marketed, and these photographs also made an important contri-bution towards national identity. Another consequence, however, was that the respective pictorial repertoire became inflated and stereotyped.

Switzerland Tourism has chosen an unusual project to mark its 100th anniversary in 2017 with the aim of exploring the potential of photography anew. The Swiss Foundation for Photography (Winterthur) and the Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne) invited five internationally renowned photographers to scrutinise Switzerland in their capacity as independent, subjective and sensitive observers – unrestricted by any advertising commission.

What Alinka Echeverría (Mexico/UK), Shane Lavalette (USA), Eva Leitolf (Germany), Simon Roberts (UK) and Zhang Xiao (China) discovered on their travels around the country or along its borders is both inspiring and revealing. Their exciting, poetic or mysterious-enigmatic images invite viewers to see the familiar with the eyes of an outsider.

An initiative of the Swiss Foundation for Photography, co-produced by the Musée de l’Elysée and with the support of Switzerland Tourism.

A boxed set of books co-published by the Swiss Foundation for Photography, the Musée de l’Elysée and Lars Müller Publishers will accompany the exhibition. Technical information: February 2017 / 16,5 x 23 cm, six soft-cover volumes in a box / 300 pages.

The Museum in movies: A cycle with the Cinémathèque suissePlateforme10 and the Cinémathèque suisse are teaming up for a journey through the history of cinema and around the museum space, in the form of a monthly cycle entitled “the museum in movies”. Places teaming with mystery and adventure, real or imaginary, museums have always inspired artists and filmmakers who often used these spaces devoted to culture, science and the imagination as settings or characters. From Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock (1958) to National Gallery by Frederic Wiseman (2014), and including Passion by Jean-Luc Godard (1982) and The Thomas Crown Affair by John McTiernan (1999), this first phase of the cycle will run until the end of the month of June 2017.
