    Lesson Objectives:

    Understand where our star signs

    come from

Learn about eclipses of the Sun and

    Moon

You have an A3 worksheet for the lesson listen carefully so you

    can answer the questions

    on the sheet!

    The Sun -days

The Sun sits in the centre of our Solar System, and

all planets orbit around the Sun

It looks from Earth asthough the Sun goes

    round us once a day.

    In reality, the Earth is

    spinning and the Sun

    stays roughly where it

    is.

    The Sun - years

Over the course of the year, the Earth goes oncearound the Sun.

To explore this, we need to know about the stars in the

    sky.

Astronomers say that the stars are fixed in position, so

as the Earth goes around the Sun, different stars areseen up above

    Constellations

    These are groupsof stars, named

    thousands of

    years ago.

    The middle belt

    highlighted is

    called the Zodiac.

All the named constellations in the zodiac are the ones

we give to our star signs. How many can you think of...?!

At any time, the Sun will be in front of one of

them, we just cant see them if its daytime.

    The constellation

    which is behind

    the Sun when you

    are born gives

    you your star

    sign!

(its not actually thesame these days, it is

    all based on their

    positions thousands

    of years ago!)

    What about this star sign?

What star sign would someone be if they were

    born at this time...?

EclipsesHas anyone ever seen an eclipse?

There are two kinds, Solar and Lunar eclipses

    Lunareclipsesoccur when the

    Moon passes

    directly behind

    the Earth fromthe Sun...

    Lunar Eclipse

The moon turns a dark rusty colour!

A Solar EclipseThese require the moon to pass exactly between the

Sun and Earth and are rarer.

The diameter of the Moon is 81 times smaller than the

diameter of the Sun, but it is 81 times closer!

    A Solar Eclipse - Higher

A solar eclipse happens because the apparent diameter

of the Sun and Moon is identical when viewed from

Earth roughly the same size as the width of a

    thumb held at arms length.

You can check this fact using the data below use the

box on your worksheet. Should the Moon and Sun

appear the same size in the Sky?

    Diameter (km) Distance Away (km)

    Sun 1,392,000 149,600,000

    Moon 3,474 384,399
