M.P.I @ MRC 'The M.P.I students are once again excited to be rehearsing for our Term 3 Hui Night on Thursday, 14th September (week 9). With new songs, and dances from around the pacific, this Hui Night is an event not to be missed! We will also be thanking the lovely staff who have volunteered to supervise weekly sessions. Please note that as a result of some valuable feedback from the lovely M.P.I parents, we have altered the venue and time to a Thursday night at 3:30pm-5pm in the Main Gym, and we have also changed the food to a sausage sizzle! Please come along and enjoy the festivities.'

A peep into Prep E and F.

In Numeracy we have been working hard at learning different strategies to help us with addition, looking at data graphs and all about money (it definitely doesn’t grow on trees!).

In Literacy it is all about learning lots of information to assist us in our Information Report Writing, we love sharks. There has been lots of reading occurring and our alphabet identification and Oxford Word List words are helping us achieve this.

In Inquiry we are eagerly awaiting our bean plants to grow and have been enjoying learning all about life cycles! Healthy Harold and the Life Ed van has also paid MRC a visit and were super excited to meet him! Next visit is the Responsible Pet Ownership lady and her dog which we cannot wait for!

Classical Piano Success

The Performing Arts Department is very happy to celebrate the success of one of our piano students enrolled in our Instrumental Music Program.

Fathia Rasyidi of Year 10 sat a First Grade Classical Piano Exam at the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) in Hawthorn last month. Fathia was required to perform four pieces as well as demonstrate proficiency in a variety of technical and aural skills.

Despite her nerves, Fathia performed her pieces well for the examiner and was awarded a Pass with ‘Honours’. She will now begin to prepare classical piano pieces from the third grade syllabus with a view to sit that exam in 2018. She has already started learning the piece ‘Solfeggietto’ by Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach.

Towards the end of the year more students will represent Mount Ridley College at the AMEB. Exams are offered on many instruments both in classical or contemporary music programs. Any parents who are interested in students beginning this program should speak with their Instrumental Music Teacher to find out what is involved.

House Colours Day On Thursday August 31, Mount Ridley College celebrated theirannual House Colours Day. The day was a huge success, withstudents across the entire College getting involved. Students put ina fantastic effort on the day, managing to raise over $900 for StateSchools Relief.

The most exciting part of the day was lunch time, with activitiesoccurring all over the College. On the Early Years side, the Prep toYear 4’s participated in paper plane throwing competitions, pin thetail on the mascot, face painting and much more. It was great tosee the yard flooded with black, white, yellow and blue colours.

The senior side didn’t miss out either, with goal-kicking, finska, and giant jenga being played, just to name a few. Session 5 alsohad a few classes continue the spirit of the day, with a huge gameof dodgeball from the Year 7s being a major highlight.

It was great to see the school come together and get into the housespirit.

Year 10 Course Counselling

Term 3 has proven to be a busy, challenging and exciting time for our Year 10 cohort. The first couple of weeks saw our students working tirelessly with their mentor teachers to decide which Pathway either VCE or VCAL they would pursue in their final years of Secondary schooling. Although, the course counselling process was a lengthy and somewhat daunting task for some, it proved to be successful with parents/guardians and students attending to eagerly select and finalise subjects they would undertake throughout their nominated programs. A big thankyou to our Year 10 Mentor teachers, Pathways team, VCAL and VCE teachers for your patience and guidance in ensuring each student acquires the right pathway.

Student Achievements

On Thursday 24th August we had our first Year 10 assembly for the term. The assembly was used as a vehicle to celebrate the successes and outstanding achievements of our Year 10 students. Students received certificate awards from a variety of categories that included: subject specific academic excellence, accumulated merits, GPA attainment of 4.5 and above and science week. Congratulations to all students who received an award and a special mention to Nike Vahua, Salvatore Lando, Eesha Zahid Khan and Nafisa Mohamed for continuously upholding the school values and receiving 25+ merits for the year.

Love Bites

On August 18th for the third year in a row our Year 10’s participated in Love Bites. Love Bites is an educational program aimed at preventing Relationship Violence and Sexual Assault in our communities. Many students find the day at times emotional and confronting but importantly this program starts a dialogue with our students about their role in stamping out relationship violence and sexual assault. Once again, without the support of our College’s trained facilitators as well as external facilitators this program would not have run as smoothly and had the impact it does each year on the young people involved. Special thanks to our staff Riley Davies, Janet Lebel, Lauren Toso, Karim Ghattas, Michael Sarraf, Krysta Beckenham, Luke Carroll and Kate Stevanovic. As well as an enormous thank you to our external facilitators including: Peter Shearer and Leonie Hill (Victoria Police), David Owen (Craigieburn Secondary College), Fadi Quanwar (Arabic Welfare), Alex Robinson (Hume Central Secondary College), Rob Cosner and Barbara Gavin (Sunbury Downs Secondary College), Amanda Lathan (Berry Street). It is timely to remind all students and families that attendance to our Discovery Day programs such as Love Bites is compulsory. Students who are absent on the day will be required to attend recall week at the end of the year.

On Thursday 26th October our Year 10s will be participating in the Party Safe program. Party safe aims to promote harm minimisation strategies by educating and extending students’ understanding of the importance of being safe at parties. We have been fortunate enough to secure a number of external presenters from various professions to deliver sessions on respectful relationships, effects of drugs and alcohol and information on unlawful behaviour. Furthermore, the program will increase students’ awareness of antisocial behaviours, offences occurring and incidents happening at a party.

Year 10 Work Readiness Program

On the 16th and 17th of August a select group of Year 10’s including our LINCs class participated in a Work Readiness Program presented by the Beacon Foundation, one of our loyal partners. Students learnt a range of skills and knowledge to stand at the front of the pack when it comes to job interviews. Students learnt about personal branding and honing in on their strengths. Students then had the opportunity to meet with mentors who gave their insights into their successes in their chosen occupations. In particular, feedback from the LINCs class was overwhelmingly positive as well as practical.

Farm Experience (FX) Program

From September 18-22 a select group of our students will be embarking on a week-long farm experience. Our College was lucky enough to be selected as the first in Victoria to offer this once in a life time experience to our students. The FX program is aimed at enabling city students to experience a week on a Dairy farm; learn where food and fibre comes from and how they are produced; to increase their awareness about what is involved in farming and its complexities and opportunities; to see the career opportunities the food and fibre industry and Dairy sector has to offer and to experience lifestyle in rural and regional communities with a local farming family. Students will stay in pairs with host families within the local area of Sale. We look forward to sharing with you their experiences through their involvement in the program upon their return.

'LINCs and the Law On September 4th the LINCs team along with Melanie Foster and Kate Stevanovic spent the day learning about the justice system (as part of their assessment outcomes) through an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates Court and the Victoria Police Museum. Students thoroughly enjoyed being able to attend a range of court hearings whilst at the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court and witnessed the multiple levels of the court system. The class then spent time going through the Victoria Police Museum getting ‘mug shots’ and reading about the Kelly Gang, the Underworld gangsters like Squizzy and seeing the role of women in the police force across the decades. Students thoroughly enjoyed their experience learning more about the justice system and represented our College to an exceptional level. A huge thank you to Melanie Foster for organising the day.'

Year 11 Musical

Week 8 was a busy week for a few of our Year 11 students who had starring roles in the school’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Julienne Canta (Dorothy), Faith Scott (Aunt Em) and Zakarya Butt (The Wizard) shone on the big stage. The production was the perfect place to showcase these students’ singing, dancing and acting skills. These students, as well as the other cast members, work very hard and it was evident in the fun, energetic show that they put on for three nights.

Excursions

The Year 11 students have been involved in several excursions for their various subjects.

Students from Year 10 and 11 Food Technology were given the opportunity through our partnership relationship with the Beacon Foundation to experience what goes into the daily upkeep and running of an Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) building through participating in a tour of the Crowne Plaza in Melbourne’s CBD. The tour involved investigating the fully functional kitchen and restaurant as well as viewing a four star room and rooftop pool. Students were then able to visit the Rialto Intercontinental Hotel and were completely spell bound by the Harry Potter look about the interiors. Our tour guide gave students a real insight into the tourism and hospitality career pathway and his experience of travelling and working for IHG’s franchises from North Queensland to Sydney and Melbourne. The experience was a valuable opportunity for students with an interest in pursuing this area as a career pathway.

The Psychology students visited the ArtVo Museum in Docklands as part of their Perception and Sensations Unit. There, the kids stepped into a world of optical illusions and spent a fun day taking photos of themselves amongst daring backgrounds. Students didn’t just look at art, they became part of it – and took a tonne of awesome photos as well!

As part of their Civil Law Outcome, the Year 11 Legal Studies students had a chance to experience a live court case in a mock trial at the Old Magistrates Court. During this excursion, students were given roles to play in a culpable driving case. This was a great experience for students as they were able to gain an appreciation of court proceedings as well as an understanding for the emotional toll court cases have for those involved. The students finished off their day with a visit to the Police Museum where they learnt about high profile cases, such as the Swanston St Car Bombing.

Year 11 As part of an outcome on the Vietnam War, students in the Year 11 History classes have had a week of interactive activities and experiences this week. They have had an opportunity to explore primary sources through the Memorial Box, which allowed them to try on a soldier’s uniform and explore artefacts such as a zippo lighter, a hexamine stove and a peanut butter ration. The students also heard from Vietnam War Veterans and a Vietnamese refugee who spoke with the students about their experiences during and after the Vietnam War. These experiences brought history out of the textbook and into the classroom.

Uniform

It has been really positive to see the Year 11 students, and the rest of Willandra, looking so sharp in their uniform lately! With a few exceptions, students have battled the cold with the school jackets and jumpers. All that’s needed now is for the weather to warm up!

Discovery Day (Previous One + Future one)

Late last term, the Year 11’s undertook their second Discovery Day for the year where they undertook many activities, ranging from Berry St, Pathways, and study skills. The Year 11 cohort will now undertake their 3rd Discovery Day on Wednesday 13th September. This time around, we have decided to take a different approach to the way we structure the Discovery Days. The students will come to school and have classes during Sessions 1‐2 and 5, with a key note presenter during Sessions 3‐4. Students will hear from Luke, who has participated in international Tough Mudder competitions. The aim of his presentation is to unpack and discuss key skills to resilience and perseverance during difficult times, and Luke will speak through his personal experiences. We hope that these stories will inspire our Year 11’s to push through to the end and achieve the very best results possible!

Darren Perreia

Darren Perriea was welcomed back with open arms earlier on this term, coming in to present to our Year 11’s about the ‘growth’ mind set and putting in place achievable goals. His presentation was extremely well received by the cohort, with many still talking about the fantastic ideas that he suggested, and even more enthusiastically implementing his strategies into their day‐to‐day routines. We hope that the students utilise these key skills to ensure that they have put themselves into a stronger position to continue to achieve their amazing results.

Finishing Unit one

So we have also seen the end of Unit 1, and with that in mind, Unit 2 is well and truly underway as we have almost hit half way. With amazing results and determination demonstrated by the Year 11’s in Unit 1, Unit 2 seems to have become an incredible success already. As the end of Term 3 approaches quickly we hear students who are completing a Year 12 subject starting to murmur about their impending exams. These students have already received their Exam Navigators for the final exams, as well as the trial exam timetables for the holidays. A special good luck to everyone completing a Unit 3‐4 subject. For those who are completing just a Unit 1‐2 program, we look forward to Term 4 and the count down to exams at the end of Unit 2. Please remember to take these next school holidays as a time to prepare and consolidate all your learning and notes from Unit 1 as well as all study completed in Unit 2 in preparation for the final exams.

Study Hall

It has been amazing to see so many active Year 11 students at the Study Hall on Thursday afternoons. We have made available many tutors, who are past Year 12 students, on Thursday afternoons to assist with student’s study groups as well as anyone who is after any additional support with their subjects. It has been great to also see students forming subject specific study groups and utilising the space not just on Thursday afternoon’s, but also throughout the rest of the week. Keep up the great work!

Subject Selections/Course Counselling

With course counselling finally completed, it has been fantastic to see the Year 11 students lock in their final selection of 5 subjects for Year 12. With subjects finally selected, please ensure that all the permission notes and any other associated paperwork is completed and submitted to the Senior Years Mini School office to ensure that it can be all processed in a timely manner, so that all choices can be secured.

looking dangerously close at the finish line.

Within the next three weeks, most students will have successfully passed the School based Assessment Tasks for VCE. All that will remain is the dreaded exams. VCAL students are signing off their various outcomes, and making final adjustments to complete their intermediate or senior cer ficates.

The prac ce exam period starts on 21st September, with the English prac ce exam being held on weShare day. Students are expected to complete prac ce exams for their remaining subjects. Please be reminded that the exams are compulsory to a end. The metable is on the following page.

During the holidays, various universi es hold revision seminars. The lectures also provide comprehensive study notes and ques ons, which is vital in the lead up to the important exams.

During the period when classes have finished and VCAA exams, students should con nue to come into school to meet with teachers during normal scheduled class me. For the most part, teachers will be available to assist students with final revision ques ons during this me. Students will be given more details about this next term.

Science week @ MRC

During the week of August 14th Mount Ridley College hosted its annual Science Week festivities. Science Week is an Australian Government run initiative which aims to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). This year’s theme was “Future Earth”.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including lunch time practicals, daily quizzes and a poster competition. The practical activities included making instant snow, making bouncy balls, playing with a Van De Graff, seeing demos with Dry Ice and watching ice cream being made with liquid nitrogen. Students from Early Years even got to watch a liquid nitrogen demonstration during their assembly.

Every day a quiz was read out to students as part of the Daily Bulletin. All participants earned House Points and winners received prizes. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the students who participated.

Lastly a “Future Earth” poster competition ran during the week. Students were encouraged to create an A4 poster interpreting the phrase “Future Earth”. There was some outstanding work from students. All students who submitted posters acquired House Points for participation. Special congratulations to Fathia Rasyidi 10I, Nicole Makiling 10I, Brianna Malsen 7I, Niraj Prasad 7I, Melis Benli 56D and Azka Butt 56L for their amazing

Well into the flu season, it is important to keep our children healthy. Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu. Usually, the flu is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Occasionally, people get the flu from touching a germ‐infested surface. It is important to know the difference between cold and flu. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills, sore throat, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Often cold symptoms come on gradually and they include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and hacking cough. SIMPLE STEPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD HEALTHY: The best way to prevent your child from getting the flu is to take him/her to get a flu vaccine. Talk to your child about practicing good health habits, such as:

Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds

Covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing‐preferably into the

inside of the elbow or with a tissue and disposing of the tissue immediately into the bin.

Avoiding sharing drinks, water

bottles, eating utensils and mobile phones.

Avoiding touching their eyes, nose,

and mouth

You can help prevent the flu from spreading at home by disinfecting

Frequently touched surfaces, toys,

and other commonly shared items.

You can prevent spreading illness to others by keeping your sick children home from school until they have been without fever for 24 hours. It is important for your sick child to get rest and drink plenty of fluids.
