TOURIST ROAD SIGNS
Look for the blue signs! They will indicate the name of a region and the road to follow to reach tourist services, activities or attractions.
SECURITY
Turning right on a red light is permitted at most municipal intersections. It is stillcompulsory to come to a complete stop, and drivers must give the right of way tovehicles, cyclists and pedestrians who have already entered the intersection.
Wearing a helmet is mandatory in Québec. Furthermore, because of unpredictableconditions when riding a motorcyle, it is strongly recommended to bring clothing forall conditions.
Effective April 1, 2008, use of a hand-held cell phone that does not have a “hands-free”function is prohibited in Québec while driving.
DRIVING IN QUÉBEC
Since Canada uses the metric system, speed limits and distances are indicated inkilometres per hour (km/h) and gasoline is sold by the litre (l).
TIPPING
Tipping is customary in restaurants, bars and taxis. The amount, which is not included in the bill, generally represents 15% of the total bill before taxes. For quicktip calculations, Quebecers normally add up both taxes. Tipping bellhops or portersis at your discretion (generally, $1 per bag carried).
TAXES
Two taxes apply in Quebec: the federal goods and services tax (GST), of 5%, and theQuebec sales tax (QST), of 9.975%. A tax on accommodations of 3% of the roomprice per night also applies in Gaspésie plus a $3 tax per night in the Bas-Saint-Laurent.
VILLAGE-RELAIS SERVICES
If you’re tired or you need help, stop in a village-relais, a municipality that offers, inco-operationwith local businesses, a variety of services like those available at service centres, including food, fuel, mechanical assistance and accommodation. They are located on provincial highways and tourist routes.

Following Route 132 from the Centre-du-Québec and Chaudière-Appalaches regions, you will join the Bas-Saint-Laurent section of the Route des Navigateurs through Kamouraska Region, in La Pocatière. With most traffic staying on Highway 20, you’ll thenride on tranquil Route 132 through a string of peaceful villages amongVictorian-era homes on the shores of the St. Lawrence, recalling theheyday of the 19th century seaside resorts.
At Rivière-du-Loup, the St. Lawrence already reaches a width of 23 kilometres and is referred to as the “sea”. This is also where theRoute des Phares (lighthouse trail) begins. You can visit three light-houses in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region: the lighthouse on Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie islands located off Rivière-du-Loup, and the Île Vertelighthouse, the oldest on the St. Lawrence, and the Pointe-au-Pèrelighthouse in Rimouski.
A string of islands open to visitors dots the St. Lawrence in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Enjoy an outing on the water to discover the animals and plants of the St. Lawrence, whether by kayak, Zodiacor larger boats for whale-watching cruises. In Trois-Pistoles, you’ll be enchanted by local legends and charmed by the Basque culture.

The village of Kamouraska is probably one of the best known resorttowns in eastern Quebec. On weekends, Avenue Morel (Route 132) is crowded with visitors to the many restaurants, fish markets, bakery, shops and art galleries, as well as the museum and health spa. The traditional architecture of the region has been preserved in many magnificent homes, some of which are now B&Bs.
