HOT, HOT, HOT! And it wasn’t just the cars, it was the hottestday of the summer so far. Homeward bound at day’s end, as we ap-proached the ferry dock we were gently reminded of that by a signalong the roadway, “Finally Summer.” It was way past time for sum-mer to arrive, August 21, a glorious day in all respects. However, acouple of Early Bird owners didn’t receive the memo: “It’s a TopDown Day!”
Vashon Island graciously hosted the Puget Sound Early Birds, theOlympic Classic Thunderbird Club and C-1 Corvette Owners in this

The sign leaving Vashon Islandreads “Finally Summer”. Yes it was.Can you believe how many turned out?The two Thunderbird Clubs from thePuget Sound area and the C-1 CorvetteGroup. How cool. Thank you Gor-don Thorne for arranging this, a greatjob as always. Jerry Little of the C-1Group assisted as did Bruce Eardley from theOlympic Classic Thunderbird Club.
Thank you to the Vashon Chamber of Com-merce for all their assistance in putting this to-gether. What a great outing.
Dan and Sue Kalinski have promised thesame kind of weather for Day 2of the Thunder Run, anothermulti-club event with OCTCand Rose City.
There has been a change inplans for the multi-day October
event. Les and Jo had to bow out forsome personal reasons, but DaveDemory stepped up to the plate and isputting together a one day “PokerRun.” Details follow.
I guess you have noticed that in the lastcouple of months, the ranks of PSEBhave swelled a little. Six new members:
Jeff and Tami Caldwell; Ron and Michele Hel-sey; and Jaime and Marsha Marcelo joined theclub. Welcome!
As I was waiting in line in Fauntleroy for the10:10 boat, I met the Marcelo’s who just broughttheir ‘55 Bird up from California and are joining
PSEB.
We hope to see all our newmembers at Dan & Sue’s inSeptember. It should be agreat time.

WOW!! A larger than expected turnout, actu-ally a huge turnout, 19 Corvettes and 26 Thun-derbirds, gathered in the Vashon Island Park-N-Ride lot to receive information packets andinstructions for the driving tour via winding,

sometimes narrow roads, one of which, BurmaRoad SW, remains in its original configurationfrom the 1920’s and early 30’s. The drive tookus to Engle’s Gas Station, Repair & Towing for
their Annual Car Show where we enjoyed thecars, each other, the music and humor of theDoily Brothers Band and the barbeque benefit-
ing Vashon High School wrestling and football
teams. From there it was on to the Point Rob-inson Lighthouse.
We were greeted at this historic 1915 light-house by U.S. Coast Guard Captain Joe Wub-
ble who gave a shorthistory of this struc-ture with its originalFresnel lens. At thetime the lighthousewas built, the islandwas largely undevel-oped so all the mate-rials had to beshipped across theSound. “CaptainJoe” led small groupsto the top of the

lighthouse to see the Fresnel lens up close andenjoy the commanding views from the catwalkin all directions.
To cap off our time at Point Robinson, theVirginia V, the last of the 20th century’s“Mosquito Fleet” that plied the waters of thePuget Sound in days long gone steamed by tocapture our attention once again as it passed byright in front of us on her annual tour aroundVashon. Set against majestic Mount Rainier itmade for a great photo op!
It was soon time to move on to our nextstop, downtown Vashon, where a section of thepublic parking lot was set aside so visitors to thetown could admire these great cars. After astroll through Vashon to enjoy the annual “Dog
Days of Summer” sidewalk sale, it was time tohead for the offi-
cial end of thetour at VashonWinery, thethird oldest inW a s h i n g t o nState, for winetasting. VashonWinery is a tiny
“garagiste” (garage
-size winery not owning vineyards) producingless than 600 cases of wine annually. VashonWinery sells most of its wines locally throughwine shopsand grocerystores withwine manag-ers.
At thistime we bidadieu to ournew Corvettefriends and fel-low T-birders and headed for the ferry dockshaving had a busy, varied and great outing.
A big “Thank You” to the organizers and toall that attended and made this a fun filled day.

THE BACK STORY . . .The idea for this event began three years ago when the Puget Sound Early Birds participated in
the Vashon Island Strawberry Festival parade. Gordon Thorne was so impressed with the VashonIslanders and the island itself that he contacted Debbie Richards at the Chamber of Commercethere. Together over time they developed the plan for the August event, talked about driving tours, consulted on the best time of year, “don’t miss” highlights on Vashon, and the plan for the day washatched.
So how did the Corvettes get involved? When the Seattle Times published an article about thegroup that “did” Route 66 last fall, it began an exchange between Corvette owner Jerry Little andGordon. The Corvettes had made the same trip, stayed in many of the same places, ate in the samerestaurants and visited the same Route 66 icons in 2005. As their conversations about Route 66continued, the notion of a joint outing was born. Since many PSEB members are also OCTC mem-bers, OCTC was incorporated into the plan and this very successful event was born. Good job Deb-bie, Gordon, Jerry and Bruce.

Let’s Celebrate!!
Day 2 of Thunder RunSEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER
At 9 AM On Saturday morning, September17th, we will start the 39 mile drive to CrescentLake. The drive there will take about 1.5 hourswith a couple of "gathering" stops along theway. Our route will be from the host hotel inSequim to Highway 101 and to PortAngeles. From Port Angeles we continue withHwy 101 to the Lodge.
We have planned the overall time at theLodge to be about 45 minutes so there will betime for a nature break and some time in theLodge gift shop and looking at the amenities atthis fine resort location. At 11:15AM or so, we willdepart the lodge on another scenic drive to the
east side of Crescent Lake which will take thegroup past the Log Cabin Resort. This road willlead us into Joyce and Highway 112. Then we willhead back to Port Angeles and to Sequim via theOld Olympic Highway (along with a couple ofgathering stops) and on to the Kalinski’s home forthe box lunch and the show-n-shine (dust/dirtallowed). Total distance is roughly 83 miles at aleisurely pace of about 3+ hours. By the timelunch is over and cars are reviewed, it should bejust about "happy hour" at the hotel. We willhave detailed instructions for the drive andinstructions from the hotel to our home for thosethat choose to sleep in Saturday morning. For thedrivers going on the road trip, please plan onhaving your gas tank topped off prior todeparture. It should be a great day with lots tosee and great to good roads to drive on. Lookingforward to seeing everyone then.

Always Be Very Specific When Having Work Done
Special thanks to our proofreadersThank you Jim Stott, Frank Stubbs and Martha Callard for your great photos for the lead article
Folks, please submit your ideas for a future issue.
Remember when you take your Classic Bird in for work to be done by a third party, be very, Imean very, specific as to what you need done.
Cigarette Lighter Doesn’t Work?
Never trying my cigarette lighter since owning the car, I recently tried to charge mycell phone from my cigarette lighter, but found that the phone wouldn’t charge, so I triedthe cigarette lighter to see if got hot. It didn’t.
So, I searched for the fuse, couldn’t find it, so not finding any information in the ShopManual, I scoured some websites and found a note from CASCO outlining the fix.
“Many of the original cigarette lighter sockets had a safety circuit breaker on the backwhich can be reset. If your lighter doesn't work look at the back of the socket. The circuitbreaker has a small hole in the back. Push a small nail or wire into this hole until you hearthe breaker reset with a snap. It will then be reset and as good as new. Replacement sock-ets were supplied with a thermally activated fuse and, unfortunately, these can't be reset.
Thank you CASCO for your help.
