Th e M o s t H o ly Tr i n i t y Every year the liturgical calendar brings us to two “theological feasts” on the two Sundays following Pentecost. This weekend is the celebration of the Most Holy Trinity; next week will be the celebration of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (also known as Corpus Christi).
Looking at the Opening Prayer for Mass this Sunday can give us a solid reference for what we celebrate:
“God our Father, who by sending into the world
the Word of truth and the Spirit of sanctification
made known to the human race your wondrous mystery,
grant us, we pray, that in professing the true faith,
we may acknowledge the Trinity of eternal glory
and adore your Unity, powerful in majesty.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “by sending his Only Son and the Spirit of Love in the fullness of time, God has revealed his innermost secret: God him-self is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that divine exchange” (CCC 221). The mystery of God is all about relationship, unity, and eternal love. The second read-ing for Mass this weekend is the familiar greeting used at Mass: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” (1 Cor.13:13) In these times of fracture and struggle, let’ you and I work for unity that comes from the freely given grace and love and fellowship that are hallmarks of those who are Christian believers. This could also be a good time to spend some quiet time reviewing both the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed both of which clearly and concisely state our belief in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Reflection on Plagues and Other Incon-veniences In the 14th century, bubonic plague (the “Black Death”) wiped out half of the population of Europe. In 1918, a pan-demic known as the Spanish Flu infected a third of the world’s population and re-sulted in 50 million deaths (675,000 in the United States). As of this writing, Covid-19 has caused at least 348,000 deaths in the world. You think THAT’s bad? Last week I had to wear a mask and wait in line just to pick up a six-pack at Trader Joe’s. I can’t browse in the public library and I can’t get a haircut anywhere. I can’t even go inside my church. And the other day when I went to the beach I couldn’t find a place to park! Yes, I’m ashamed to admit how many times I have groused about these assaults on my life of comfort when there is so much suffering all over the world. Some have observed that the ongoing lockdown experience has had at least one positive effect. It has produced some de-gree of solidarity among people of di-verse ages, ethnicity and economic sta-tus. It has also resulted in increased em-pathy for the poor, the homeless and the unemployed, who are all suffering more than the rest of us. Let’s hope and pray that our sense of solidarity with all of God’s creatures will remain strong long after this plague has run its course and that the compassion-ate love of Jesus will inspire our actions as long as we live.
