CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY Corpus Christi, or the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a Eucharistic solemnity, or better, the solemn commemoration of the institution of the sacrament. It is the Church's official act of homage and gratitude to Christ, who by instituting the Holy Eucharist gave to the Church her greatest treasure. Holy Thursday marks the anniversary of the Institution of the Eucharist – the Fifth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary and a profound mystery of our holy Catholic faith - but the Commemoration of the Lord's Passion that very night suppresses the rejoicing proper to the occasion. In other words, the focus on Holy Thursday is the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Today's observance highlights one part of that great mystery - the joyous aspect of Holy Thursday – the institution of our greatest life-giving sacrament. We, as Catholic Christians, must believe that what we refer to as the consecrated Host, the Eucharistic Bread, Holy Communion, or the Blessed Sacrament, is really and actually the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and in our midst today – the true presence- and not merely a symbol or reminder. We are therefore bound to worship and show greatest reverence to this Sacrament, and not only that, but as St. Augustine reminds us, we become what we receive and are the mystical Body of Christ on earth, and so are bound to also serve the world with the same humility and love that Christ has shown to us.

CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY

Corpus Christi, or the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a Eucharistic solemnity, or better, the solemn commemoration of the institution of the sacrament.

EMAIL / BULLETIN COMMUNICATION This Bulletin has been e-mailed to all parishioners who have provided an email address from: [email protected]. If you have not received it, check your spam or junk folder – they sometimes filter “.org” addresses. If you did not receive this bulletin through e-mail and would like to, please send us your updated address, subject line “Updated Email for Census” and we will take care of adding you to our list. Care for each other – even while away from each other…through Prayer.

CHURCH AND OFFICE HOURS The Rectory remains closed to visitors but open for business 9:00am-4:00pm, and the mailbox is checked regularly, throughout the hours of 9:00am-6:00pm. Please do not hesitate to call or email the office with questions or concerns. The Church remains open for private prayer. This is subject to closure for Funerals and cleaning. We kindly ask that any visitors use only the main aisle, sit in the open areas, and leave the kneeler down when you leave, so that we know where to sanitize at the end of each day. We ask and expect that as others may be present, all visitors follow the recommendations set forth by government officials with regard to masks, spacing. During this time, envelopes or other business may be dropped off safely to the Rectory Office Mail Box. We encourage our faithful, especially the young, to stay home and heed the advice of our leaders. Items may also be mailed, or business conducted online – such as inquiries into records, etc. We are only a phone call away.

ANIMA CHRISTI – Soul of Christ

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O Good Jesus, hear me.

Within your wounds hide me.

Permit me not to be separated from you.

From the wicked foe, defend me.

At the hour of my death, call me

and bid me come to you

That with your saints I may praise you

For ever and ever.

Amen.

WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY Our parish extends our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Josephine Sharek and Clara Manik whose funeral rites were celebrated this past week; and Kenneth McDonough and Michael Malzberg whose services will be held on Monday. May they be received into the arms of our merciful Savior quickly, and may their families be comforted in their time of loss.

SACRAMENTAL NEWS Please be sure to respond to the email regarding First Holy Communion and Confirmation which was sent out as we move forward with plans to celebrate these special moments of grace in the lives of our young members.

Our CCD TEACHERS will MEET on Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the Church Hall to make plans for the upcoming year. Emails were sent to all involved. JMJ CATHOLIC RADIO PROGRAMMING June is the month of the Sacred Heart on JMJ Catholic Radio, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 98.9FM & 750AM, Hazelton at 1490AM & 100.1FM and Dushore at 91.7FM. We recommend for our early morning risers “The Son Rise Morning Show” broadcast from Sacred Heart Radio in Cincinnati, Ohio. The format includes both secular and Catholic news along with in-depth

interviews. We are also blessed to recommend “Fathers Know Best,” with local son Mike Aquilina, a prolific author from Pittston. Consider tuning in as you go about your day for a refreshing approach to broadcasting.

THE GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM began summer weekly sales on Thursdays, from 5:00 – 6:00 PM. Sales will take place in Holy Rosary School’s gym. If you are unable to come during that time, you may drop off your order with payment at the rectory during summer office hours. Please label the envelope “Gift Certificate Program.” Please adhere to the following directives if you plan on stopping by to purchase gift cards: 1) face covering, 2) physical distancing of 6 feet; 3) Use marked entrances and exits.

HOUSEKEEPING POSITION Due to the recent retirement of Mrs. Hodick, whom we thank for her years of service to our pastors and people, and now that we are in the “Yellow” and can safely conduct interviews, we are in need of a replacement Housekeeper. Duties include household cleaning, laundry, hospitality for occasional visitors like missionaries, occasional cooking and meal preparation, care of sacristy items, and other similar tasks. Please call the rectory during ordinary business hours, or send an email, for a complete job description or to ask any questions about the position.

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE The coronavirus is affecting everyone in our parish, and in the world, but in many different ways. Of primary concern is the instant poverty felt by job loss: trying putting food on the table while waiting for unemployment to begin – or hopefully just brief struggles while waiting to return to work. Although we do not have unlimited resources, through the generosity of parishioners, there is help available. Please call the rectory to let us know if you, or if someone you know, may be in a bind during this difficult time.

Week of June 15-21, 2020 ~ The Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time 3

GRADUAL RETURN TO PUBLIC MASS

Your responses have shaped how our limited capacity will be

filled – think of it as an RSVP. Some points to ponder:

• The Obligation to attend Sunday Mass will remain suspended for this time. There is no sin in remaining home if you feel safer or more comfortable there for now. We encourage our elderly and vulnerable parishioners to wait before returning to Mass too soon. Livestream Mass will still be provided online during this time. Although not ordinarily a substitute for participation in person, it has been of considerable value to those at home during this emergency.

• We at Nativity will follow a system for scheduling who is going to be in the church for each Mass from among those that wish to venture out at this time…and unfortunately, no extras can be allowed. This is very difficult for our clergy and staff and volunteers to do to begin with, in that the thought of refusing entrance to church or refusing admittance to the sacraments is hard for both the “bouncer” and the “bounced.” Please review the materials sent home, respond to them quickly, and please don’t just show up expecting to get in. IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED A PHONE CALL OR EMAIL FROM THE PARISH, OR HAVE NOT SENT IN A REPLY, WAIT TO COME TO CHURCH UNTIL YOU HAVE.

• There was no great demand for afternoon or evening Masses during the week. We have returned our ordinary full schedule as printed on the top of this page.

• For those who will be coming to the church during this yellow phase and the green phase, and for those who stop for private prayer, please be aware of changing traffic patterns in the church, changed regulations, and changing hours for private prayer to allow staff and volunteers time to properly clean and sanitize – and to allow for funerals also. If you are wondering what the schedule might be on a particular day, please call the rectory.

• Mass will seem a little different – all those who are scheduled to attend a particular Mass will be expected to take his or her temperature at home before coming, and If your temperature is elevated – please stay home. -– masks must be worn while in the building – there will be one entrance in and one exit out –– offerings will be made upon entering, not during the Mass - seats will be assigned – missalettes will not be used– music will be a little different, and parishioners asked not to sing at this time - Communion will be distributed following the Mass; we ask that all receive in the hand wherever possible – upon leaving, please exit the driveway return to your vehicle directly, to avoid crowding.

• If you are shopping and come across alcohol based, 62% alcohol or greater, gel sanitizer, and are able to pick some up for parish use, it would be appreciated. We can’t always get what we need because of a limited supply – but PLEASE take care of your own sanitizer needs first.

• Again, thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, now and always.
