Prayer for the Canonization of our Parish Son, The Venerable Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor, and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspi-ration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of car-ing for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGiv-ney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor, I now

present (here make your request). Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Dear friends, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to all those who participated in the joyous celebration of the 10th Anniversary of my priestly ordination here at our beautiful Basilica last Monday. It was a wonderful and blessed occasion. I am so grateful for the presence of so many parishioners of mine, past and present, as well as many brother priests, relatives, and friends. It has been quite a journey of grace these past ten years. My special thanks to Father Ford, our Rector, Father Casey, and all the priests, staff members, and parishioners of the Basilica community who have been so kind and generous to me since my arrival in so many ways. May God continue to bless our efforts. Sincerely, Fr. John Lavorgna

8TH GRADE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS RETREAT AT SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL

A Message from the Rector

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal As the 2016 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal “God’s Mercy at Work” en-ters Commitment Weekend, I’d like to thank the 320 households of our parish for their support of the chari-table works of the Archdiocese.

In this week’s bulletin you will find a special insert of “God’s Mercy at Work” envelopes. So far, about twenty less households have partici-pated and our pledged total is about

$6000.00 less than last year. If you have not yet donated, I humbly encourage you to consider making a gift to this appeal which touches and improves the lives of literally thousands of individuals in need throughout our Archdiocese.

Through the Vicariate Outreach Program we are able to nomi-nate different local charities to benefit from the Appeal. Pro-grams eligible to receive an award of support are those pursuing a mission, purpose or outreach that is compatible with the good works of the Catholic Church. Examples include, providing shelter, food and assistance to the homeless and poor, caring for the sick, protecting the unborn, assisting seniors, youth and other individuals with special needs. Given that I’m still rela-tively new to the area, I would appreciate any recommendations of local charities that you respect and believe are making a dif-ference in our city and region. Please contact me this week by mail, phone or email with your suggestions.

Blessed Feast of Corpus Christi! Please join me and the faithful

of Waterbury in professing our love, respect and faith in the

Blessed Sacrament at today’s procession at 3 pm.
