The 4 stages of a man’s life - Brahmacharya, Grihasta, vanaprastha, sanyasa

Vrutham - 26th Jun, 2013, 9 AM The first preliminary function of our FTW, this involves propitiating the various Gods – Indra, Soma, Chandra, Agni. After this, the groom prepares himself for a new chapter in his life as a householder or Grihasta. The days of his bachelorhood or brahmacharya are now over and the acceptance of this is all what the Vratham is about.

5. An integral part of wedding functions, what can be Kandyan, Nivi, Gond, Bengali and Air-hostess style among others? The first of many times it occurs will be in the second function of GN FTW.

Kashi yatra

Kashi Yatra – 630 AM The Kashi Yatra ritual dates back to ancient times. Young bachelors had two alternatives - married life or asceticism. He prefers the ascetic life and ‘makes his way’ to Kashi dressed like an ordinary person with slippers, umbrella, and a bamboo fan.

The bride and groom exchange garlands thrice to symbolize a unification of souls. Throughout this process, they are often teased by their relatives. For instance, the relatives may pull the bride away when the groom reaches forward to place a garland on her, and vice versa. The bride’s and the groom’s uncles and friends may hoist them into the air, making it a greater challenge to exchange garlands.

3. Chepauk was considered a spinner’s paradise. To market it for fast bowlers especially early in the morning, what FTW ritual was supposedly started? To perpetuate the myth there is movement off the air, balls are flung in all eight directions. This is usually accompanied by chin music.

The bride and groom are seated together on a swing. Married women give throw colored globules of rice to propitiate evil spirits, while singing ( chin music) to praise the couple

The bridegroom puts the Mangal Sutra around the neck of the bride. A turmeric thread is also put around the bride’s neck, with three knots. The first one by the bridegroom. The other two knots are tied by the groom’s sister

5. The next function is the Paani Grahanam, where the groom holds the hands of the bride.

This means holding hands. The groom holds the hand of the bride. The mantras say: "The Devas have offered you to me in order that I may live the life of a Grihasta. We shall not part from each other even when we grow old."

6. After Rama returned triumphant into Ayodha, a pooja was organised. Rama was missing when the food was being served and all the guests started to eat. All except Hanuman. Rama came back and saw everybody was enjoying the food. Touched by Hanuman’s devotion, Rama invited him to eat with him, off his leaf.
