The Mortimers of Devon
The Family Tree, 1450-1600
Introduction
The following family tree represents the most current and up to date understanding of how the early
Mortimers of Devon relate, from Mortimer History online. Whilst the following tree represents years of
careful research, it is not intended to be a definitive publication, merely a proposal or hypothesis, subject to
further research and refinement. As such it is always open to suggestions from fellow researchers. The family
tree remains subject to amendment as further records become available or are transcribed. Gaps in the
source material inevitably mean that some elements of the early Mortimer family tree will forever remain
unsolved, and stay merely the subject of presumption or speculation. Parish registers only began on a wide
scale at the beginning of the 1600s. Before this, the genealogist must place a reliance on wills, tax records,
property deeds and manorial records for information.
In most cases, it has been assumed a member of the Mortimer family in a certain parish is directly descended
from a previous family member resident at the same location. This is an observation often considered proof
enough for the purposes of medieval genealogy, although further evidence to support family links is of
course welcome. An exception can be made for the case of Mortimers in towns and cities like Exeter,
Plymouth and Tiverton. Mortimers from a variety of different family branches often moved to the same
towns and cities, where geographical proximity should not be mistaken for close kinship. Where possible,
notes have been added to explain reasoning for certain decisions and to enlighten otherwise hidden
elements of the family tree.
A vast array of sources has been consulted in order to construct the following pedigree, which begins with
John Mortimer of Stockleigh, who was sworn to the office of tithingman for Stockleigh English in the year
1454. He remains an important link to all those with Mortimer ancestry from Devon. The Mortimer alias
Tanner family, while almost certainly relating to the main Mortimer family in some way, have not been
included in the current tree as it remains too uncertain how they relate to the main family. Alias names often
developed in the fifteenth century, and may have been down to a variety of circumstances, including
illegitimacy, inheritance or even hiding from the authorities. For the full details on individual branches of the
Mortimer family contained within, including baptism, burial and wills dates, pictures and more, please see
the pages dedicated to each branch of the Mortimer Family Tree, on the Mortimer History website:

Note. Though the family names bear a resemblance to the Mortimers of Rewe, with
siblings named William, Wilmot and Joan, the separation is clear as William Mortimer
of the Bradninch family clearly stayed in Bradninch and died in 1636. William
Mortimer, brother of the Mortimers of Rewe, was resident in Great Torrington before
1615.

Note. It remains uncertain how, if it all, the later Mortimers of Bradninch in the 1700s relate to the earlier
Mortimer family resident there.
