Howdy Y’all! Well it is that time of year again. I write this column after a couple of days of wandering our favorite roads and galleries in North Georgia and North Carolina. So far, Jen & I have stopped at a couple of our usual spots and a couple of new ones. I am happy to report that there are some great woodturnings on display from some very talented local artists. And then, today turned out to be a wonderful day of surprises for this woodturner. We stopped at one of our favorites, the Bascom. This is a wonderful art league with a beautiful campus and gallery in Highlands, North Carolina (check it out on-line). As we entered the gallery we were surrounded by an exhibition of Moulthrops. We have seen pieces at the gallery before, but never and entire exhibition. For those who have not seen or heard of the Moulthrops, this is a three-generation woodturning family. The work is exquisite in its execution. They are known for hollow forms of a similar form with deep lacquer finishes. They also do large pieces and the wood is usually spectacular as well. We spent quite a few minutes taking it all in, studying the pieces and just admiring the work and the wood. After taking in the main floor it was time to head upstairs for another featured exhibition. Low and behold another woodworking exhibition, “American Craft Today: Chairs”. Who knew and what fun for me. This was another nice exhibit full of wonderful creativity and craftsmanship. The juried winner was a beautiful piece and so were the rest. I am glad I did not have to jury the selection. Now, if all that was not enough. We headed downstairs and what should we find. Yet another display of woodturning! It just so happens that the Western North Carolina Woodturners hold their meetings at the Bascom. They have a small exhibition area on the lower level of the gallery building. There are three shelves displaying the craftsmanship of their members. It is great to see that woodturning and woodworking are being seen and appreciated in venues such as the Bascom! About the Video Library The AAW Video Library Project was originally conceived by Jerry Hall (CA) and published on the web as an independent website. Jerry envisioned a web site for woodturners to quickly find quality online videos about various aspects of woodturning. It was his intent to build a library of video titles, speeding up the process of locating useful videos available on various sources such as YouTube and Vimeo. It became clear that the original project offered a service that was very useful. In member's and chapter president's meetings at the Symposium, this became a service that AAW members indicated they wanted. However, because of the design, growing Jerry's video website became an issue. After discussions with Jerry and AAW, Dave Mueller submitted a proposal to the AAW Board of Directors to rewrite the project, using commonly available software and database tools. The Board agreed that this would be useful to the membership and in late 2015 provided help to Dave for development of a new program and database to house the video library. Kathleen Duncan (WA), a member of the AAW Board of Directors and experienced web database designer, worked with Dave to design, develop, and test the new video library. The keywords used to categorize the various videos were developed and refined by Stan Wellborn (DC), John Kelsey (PA), and the Communications Committee In this design, videos are selected and added to the library by an AAW volunteer. Once a video has been selected, it is reviewed by the AAW Safety Committee to ensure that it complies with AAW safety practices.

Each month, an experienced member reviews members’ current work in a gallery forum. In November, Dawn Herndon-Charles will bring her fine taste and critical eye to the table. We will have two tables set up, one for review items and a second table to show your work without a review. Current work is featured in this journal and on our website. All members are encouraged to bring their work to the tables. Members bringing work for review receive a raffle ticket for a gift card, so you could actually win a prize merely for doing something you actually love to do!

Monthly Demos: Demonstrations by our members and special guests

on a wide range of subjects of interest to wood turners are held each meeting. Last month, Mark

Dreyer, turner and artist for over 20 years shared his knowledge and experience with the Ringturner.

Next month, the demo will be from Marie Anderson and Paul Pyrcik and their takes on ornaements

The Windy City Woodturners At Depot Days

Lisle Park District Museums at Station

Park, Lisle, IL

"Following the recent Lisle Depot Days event we received some nice comments from the Heritage Society. "Thanks to Windy City Wood Turners...we appreciate all there hard work...we now have a really worth while woodworking display that is exiting for visitors to see...your team has elevated the area to a valuable one." The display now includes three operating lathes spanning 300 years of equipment history. Mark McCleary, Rich Rohrback, Dawn Herndon-Charles, Don Johnston, Rich Hall-Reppen, Bob Bergstrom, Bruce Kamp, Paul Pyrcik and Pete D'Attomo had the fun of demonstrating and talking about Windy City. Our display table featured the ornaments we have produced for the Historical Society over the past three years.

You will notice a format change with this issue. This is due in large part to a change in software used to produce this newsletter. Microsoft no longer supports Publisher (and hasn’t for many years), so we

have migrated to PowerPoint, which is available for all of the major operating systems. This software change has been in the works for quite awhile, and we’re just getting around to it. We hope you enjoy

the new format, and as always suggestions, contributions and rants and raves are welcome.
