MARCH 2019 OLD PUEBLO ENDURANCE RUN SUPPORT

March 1, 8-9 PM (setup); March 2, 6:00 AM until whenever.

Run Leader: Becky Antle (405-7389).

Trail Rating: Information not provided.

Destination: Kentucky Camp in the Santa Rita Mountains. We have been asked to provide support for the Old Pueblo Endurance Run (https://oldpueblo50.com/) again this year. It is based at Kentucky Camp in the Santa Ritas. Support includes ferrying supplies between checkpoints and possibly aiding injured runners. The run starts at 6:00 AM Saturday morning. Some setup help is needed on Friday evening. Camping is available. It was cold last year after the sun went down, so warm clothing is recommended. SANTA RITA MOUNTAINS SCENIC RUN

March 9, 9:00 AM. Meet on the southwest corner of the Houghton Road / I-10 interchange.

Run Leader: Jeff Merrell (520-907-0243-leave message, or [email protected]).

Trail Rating: 2.5. No vehicle restrictions.

Destination: The west side of the Santa Ritas. Drivers meeting will be at 9 AM. Please arrive early enough to air down if you choose; it’s about 10 miles to the trailhead. This run starts at the Greaterville exit off Hwy 83 and takes the 4-wheel roads down the west side of the Santa Rita foot-hills, returning to pavement on AZ 82 eight miles north of Patagonia and 5 miles south of Sonoita. We will return via AZ 83 to the meetup spot on the return trip. This is a 30-mile run, but is an easy day wheeling (no rock crawling). This is one of the most scenic drives I have found to date and one of my personal favorites. I am asking you to RSVP (BY EMAIL PLEASE) on this run. Last year we had 39 vehicles, far too many for the trail or to control. If I get more than 20 I will schedule a second trail run a week or two later than this one. CHAROULEAU GAP WORK RUN

Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (682-0273).

Trail Rating: Information not provided.

Destination: Oracle, AZ (or Catalina, AZ, depending on the direction of travel on the trail). We will be doing our spring work run to Charouleau Gap. Expect to be out all day. We typically work for an hour or so and then enjoy the run the rest of the day. Bring shovels, gloves, 5-gal buckets, and your lunch. APRIL 2019 ASA4WDC LAND WORK RUN

The Rough Rider 7 January 2019

(Article by Miles Weigold) 2018 was another great year for the Rough Riders. Participation numbers were up in all categories year-over-year with the exception of rescues…..a good thing! Below you’ll find totals for all events, a reminder of how points are earned dur-ing the year (which won’t change going into 2019) and individual points leaders, highest to lowest. I again suggested to the Board that the winner should be presented with a new Jeep at the January meeting but was reminded that that would exceed our budget! If you believe I’ve erred in my calculations, please email me at [email protected] with details. Thanks to Steve Archer for his scrutiny of the reports. All this time I didn’t think anyone was reading this stuff! Many thanks to all run lead-ers for getting the rosters to Tim, Tom and me as soon after the run as possible. Also, please be sure to use the roster posted on the website which shows # of vehicles on a run. Looking forward to seeing you on the trails often in 2019!

Montana Mountain (01/20 Eugene Veltre) (Story and photos by Eugene Veltre. Photo Album 304.)

We had a really good turnout for the run up to Montana Mt. Seventeen vehicles left the Bashas’ parking lot and headed north to Florence, where we met up with Chris to make the total 18 vehicles. It also gave a few of us with not-so-good fuel mileage a chance to top off our tanks. We headed out of Florence at 10 AM and headed north to the trailhead where we stopped to air down. Off we went for a very beautiful scenic drive through the Superstition Mts. The trail starts after crossing a large wash bed and heads up and through a canyon with views that, in my opinion, are some of the best views available of the high desert. After making it past the canyon it was about 6 miles of trail where we came

to the 172 and 172a fork. I decided to take 172 to the left to head about two miles up the mountain to a spot that was large enough for us to park and have our lunch break. At this point we had been on the trail for about two hours and com-pleted about a third of the trail. After lunch we headed back down the mountain to the 172 and 172a fork and started the climb up 172a. It climbs about 3000 feet in elevation over 4 miles with some steep areas along the way. After the climb to the top we took a fork off to the right onto trail 650 that crosses over 3 or 4 ridge lines and leads to a view that I have to say is the best view I have ever seen in Arizona so far. We stopped at this point to allow eve-ryone to stretch out before we started back down to the end of the trail.

At this point we had a group of eight side-by-sides and three bikes catch us with the trail too narrow to allow them to pass, so the next five miles of the trail was a train of 29 vehicles. We made it down to the switchbacks and started heading down them. About half way down we had our first and only issue of the day when Mark’s Jeep lost power and would not restart. After about 10 minutes and a clogged up trail he de-cided to head down under no power to get to an area where

we could allow people to pass our large group. After I pushed him up a few hills we made it to an area where we could clear off the trail and spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out what had happened to Mark’s Jeep. At this point we decided the best thing to do was tow him out the last five miles so he could contact his son to bring out the trailer. After about a mile or so of towing his brakes were getting hot and I decided that it would be best to have Mark, Chris, and Bill tow him out slowly, and I would take the rest of the group to the end and allow them to head home while it was not dark and then head back down trail to finish getting Mark out. Big thanks to Member Bill Hyde for stepping up to tow Mark to the end. It was about 7 PM when Mark’s son showed up with the trailer. We loaded up his Jeep and headed back to Tucson. All in all it was a great trip and had a few hours at the end to get to know a few great people even better.

A Bit of History

Steve Archer received an email notification recently that Area BFE, a private off-road park in / near Moab, Utah, has been sold and is now closed to the public. He forwarded the information to our email list. I have copied that message here. Other than possibly becoming members of the Utah Public Lands Alliance, there isn’t much we can do, but this is worth knowing. “For those [who] have been wheelin’ in Moab or those who may do so in the future, this link gives an update on the sta-tus of the Area BFE off-road park near Moab: https://utahpla.com/land-closure-update-on-the-area-bfe-off-road-park/ “I received the above report in an electronic newsletter that I receive as a member of the “Utah Public Lands Alli-ance" (https://utahpla.com/).. UPLA is dedicated to preserving Utah’s BLM and public lands for Public Use. Membership in UPLA is only $10/y and gives access to all portions of their website including events, projects, activities, GPS Tracks and Trip Reports. “Steve A”

The Rough Rider 20 January 2019

My brain is still reeling from riding horse- and muleback across the Andes last month (reaching an altitude of 14,300 feet at the top of the pass), going places no 4WD could hope to go. The horsepower was incredible and the traction superb. In the meantime, enjoy these photos from the run albums. I’ll be back with something relevant next month.
