PROTECTING YOUR CHILD ONLINE In light of recent events it is increasingly important for parents to keep “tabs” on theirchild’s use of the internet and in particular, “social networking” sites. With two teenage children myself I know the fine balance between letting them interactwith friends and keeping them safe. I can see the benefits – my children keep in touchwith friends that have moved to other schools, solve homework issues and organise theirsocial lives without tying up the phone for hours but I also want to keep them safe. Most of the “social networking” sites have an age restriction. When children sign up, tothese sites, they have to tick to say that they are at least 13 years old. So technically, noprimary aged students should be using Facebook or other similar sites. Now knowing children, for many, the need to be “social” would outweigh the agerestriction so they would tick the box without hesitation. In this case we need to educatethem on safe use of the internet. Here are some of my tips:

Establish your standards early. Keep the computer in a family area not their bedroom. Talk to your child about their online activities.

With my children I keep the computer in the lounge room with the screen visible toanyone as they walk past. I have a rule that they must show me what they are doing onrequest (including all open pages). I established this rule when they first asked to use thecomputer to communicate with friends – it’s made it a lot easier now they are older asthey are use to me checking every now and then. You have to get a balance though, and not be too shocked at what you see when youcheck. These are kids talking to kids and sometimes the content isn’t the best but I trynot to get too caught up by what their friends or they say - my purpose is to monitor theirsafety not pry into their social life. I also talk to my children about the sites they are using (the bonus is that I often find outabout handy sites I can use). I reinforce safety messages (just as I did when they werelearning the road rules). Common messages I use:

Always set your profile to private so that you can control who has access to yourinformation.

Do not reveal your exact address or which school you attend. (Considerinformation contained in photos – a photo of you in uniform outside your schoolmay identify which school you attend)

Consider anything you post to be “public” even though you might have yourprofile set to private. This includes photos and videos.

Set your photo options to “no picture forwarding” Always keep your password secret. Change your password frequently. Use a

combination of letters, numbers and upper/lower case to make your passwordstronger.

The people you meet on-line may not be who they seem. Not everyone is ashonest as you. Some older people are very clever at pretending they areyounger. They may be very convincing.

Never arrange to meet someone you have met on-line in person unless you tellyour parents and meet them in a public place with friends or family with you.

Be cautious downloading photos or similar from other people’s pages. Many filescontain viruses.

The “stranger danger” strategies we talk about at school still apply. If it doesn’tfeel right it probably isn’t right. If you have that “funny” feeling in your tummythen talk to your parents. If you are worried about any of your “friends” on-linetalk to your parents.

VEHICLE SAFETY AROUND THE SCHOOL – Ranger Visit A reminder that Shaw Street is very busy due to the construction work. Constructionvehicles and less parking for staff means that Shaw St is narrower than normal and muchbusier.

Please take extra care – slow down and use caution when opening your car door. Pleaseonly park in correct areas. In the drop off zone parents must not leave their vehicles.

Last week Gosford Council Rangers patrolled the streets around our school. They warnedpeople over the first couple of days and then recorded the registration of vehicles “doingthe wrong thing” later in the week. These people will receive infringement notices in themail shortly.

Whilst the Rangers commented that most drivers were obeying the rules they wereshocked by some of the things they saw – including parents stopping on the crossing inHigh St to drop off or pick up students, drivers crossing double lines and parents parking, not only illegally, but dangerously.

Rangers have said they will be back on a regular basis over the next few weeks tocontinue in their efforts to keep our students safe. Michael Burgess Principal
