Queen Mary II’s Ceramic CollectionQueen Mary was a keen collector of Chinese porcelain. She also brought 17th-century Delftware from Holland when she came to the throne of England

in 1689 with her Dutch husband, William of Orange. Their arrival had a great effect on the artistic tastes of the last years of the Stuart dynasty. The royal palaces at Kensington and Hampton Court were decorated with these blue and white ornamental pots. Hampton Court Palace became the

centre of the court with many rooms accented with magnificent pieces of Chinese porcelain and Delftware, including large vases for tulips and exotic miniature orange trees.

Blenheim PalaceThe North Portico at Blenheim Palace was painted by British artist Colin Gill in 1928. Staring down from the ceiling are the bright blue

eyes of Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough (née Gladys Deacon). She was reported to have climbed the scaffolding whilst the artist was painting to give him a blue silk scarf that matched her eyes as a colour reference.

‘Eos’By Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873)

After the original oil painting in The Royal Collection.

Prince Albert’s beloved greyhound stands poised and alert, guarding some of her master’s possessions – an opera hat, gloves and a cane. Prince Albert brought Eos with him from Germany when he married Queen Victoria in 1840. So great was his affection for the dog that the following year the Queen

commissioned Sir Edwin Landseer to paint her portrait as a surprise Christmas present for him.
