    Missouri Military Academy is rich in traditions, from day to day activities to special annual assemblies like the MacArthur Assembly, which takes place on Gen. Douglas MacArthurs birth-day, Jan. 26.

    An MMA cadet who has demonstrated the highest level of leadership, academics and athlet-ics is recognized by the MacAr-thur Foundation each year. It is one of the highest awards of the school year.

    This year, Battalion Com-mander Cadet Capt. Giuseppe Poletti of Vigevano, Italy, was selected to receive the honor.

    After receiving the award, Poletti told the assembly, If you

    truly want something, go for it. You can achieve it.

    Poletti said he was excited about winning the award, and thanked the entire Battalion for its support and help.

    The assembly is held to remember one of the nations greatest military leaders. Gen. MacArthur was in command of United States operations in the Pacic Theatre during World War II. He achieved the rank of Gen-eral of the Army, the highest pos-sible position in the U.S. military.

    The keynote speaker was Maj. Lawrence McClarey, who lauded MacArthur as a man who had made a difference in many lives, including his own.

    Three new Cadet Council motions approvedThe Missouri Military Academy

    Cadet Council had three motions approved in its Jan. 4 meeting.

    The rst was a motion to replace more Saturday drills with a variety of activities, as those events are planned and approved, and as time permits.

    A motion to have more battalion sports events was also approved.

    A motion to allow cadets permits on their birthday was approved, with the understanding that the cadet must apply for the permit and it is not retro-active.

    MMA seniors gaining college acceptances

    Charlie Company Commander 1st Lt. Israel Avelar of Mexico City, Mexico, has made it his goal to set an example for the cadets in his company, and to encour-age them to follow the MMA rules to improve themselves and Charlie.

    By Cpl. A.J. Vassen

    Charlie Company Commander Cadet 1st Lt Israel Avelar of Mexico City, Mexico, said he has come a long way while attending Missouri Mili-tary Academy.

    When asked where he nds self-motivation each day, he responded, I want to do the best I can for myself and my company.

    I get up every morn-ing because I know I have a mission to nish for the cadets in Charlie Company -- to win Honor Company!

    What is his hardest daily task for Avelar?

    Doing my best every day and never giving up, he answered.

    Avelars most proud moments at MMA were being designated Charlie Company commander and

    winning the rst company competition in Septem-ber, he said.

    Last year Avelar, an M Club member, threw the discus, ran in the 800-meter relay and threw the shot put in track and eld.

    He said that it was challenging, yet reward-ing to be able to compete and improve in track for the Colonels.

    Avelar has also partici-pated in soccer, Fusileers, drum and bugle corps, band, Raiders, basketball, color guard, Cadet Chorus, Evensong and journalism in four years at the Acad-emy.

    In the future, he plans to attend Iberoamericana college in Mexico, major-ing in business.

    Colonels basketball team continues to post victoriesMissouri Military Academy

    improved to 9-4 on the season with ve basketball wins in January.

    The Colonels posted a 73-29 victory over Orchard Farm JV on Feb. 2 in Centennial Gymtorium.

    I thought we ran the ball well, said MMA coach Maj. Michael Pemberton. I was also very pleased with our rebounding and hustle on defense. We were able to create some easy baskets with our 1-3-1 zone.

    The Colonels were led by senior Garrett Gregory with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Jackson Davis added 18 points and nine boards.

    The MMA junior varsity lost to the Orchard Farms freshmen, 39-36, on a three-point shot at the buzzer. Won Uk Lee led the Colo-nels with 12 points.

    * * *The Colonels defeated James-

    town, 61-51, on Jan. 30 in Centen-nial Gymtorium, but fell at North Calloway R-1 in Kingdom City by a 54-44 count Jan. 29.

    MMA led all the way in the win over Jamestown as Gregory scored 27 points and Davis added 17.

    This was a good win for us, said Maj. Pemberton. I thought we played good defense and controlled

    MMA senior Garrett Gregory of Katy, Texas, drives past defenders as senior Jack-son Davis of LaVeta, Colo., sets a screen in a win over Orchard Farm JV on Feb. 2. The two have led the Colonels in scoring and rebounding this season.

    the tempo. We limited our turnovers and took good shots.

    The MMA JV team also won against Jamestown.

    The Colonels led 12-10 after one quarter and 26-23 at halftime, but ran into foul and turnover problems in the second half against North Callaway.

    Gregory had 21 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Davis exited with 11 points and 10 boards.

    Turnovers, fouls and poor free throw shooting really hurt us, said Maj. Pemberton. We made 20 turnovers and were 6-of-15 from the stripe.

    The Colonels JV team fell to the North Callaway freshmen, 58-33.

    * * *MMA blasted arch-rival Went-

    worth Military Academy, 60-25, in Centennial Gymtorium on Jan. 25.

    The Colonels led 17-4 after one quarter and 35-9 at halftime in sweeping the season series with the Red Dragons.

    Gregory paced MMA with 25 points and Davis added 11.

    This was not the same Wen-tworth team that we played a couple of months ago, said Maj. Pemberton. To their credit, they hustled and never gave up.

    At the same time, I was pleased with our hustle and defen-sive effort. I thought we controlled the tempo the majority of the game. I was pleased that we could substi-

    tute and get everyone some quality playing time.

    * * *MMA posted a 52-46 victory

    over Logos School of St. Louis at home Jan 22.

    The Colonels led 16-12 after one quarter and 33-22 at halftime, but Logos rallied to close the gap down the stretch. We almost let one slip away, said Maj. Pemberton. We were up by 15 points and let them get to within four in the third quarter. We hit our free throws down the stretch and pulled out the victory. Gregory scored 29 points to lead MMA.

    * * *The Wellsville-Middletown

    Tigers controlled the backboards and posted a 58-31 victory over MMA in Wellsville on Jan. 19.

    Wellsville was just too strong and athletic for us, said Maj. Pem-berton. We had no answers for their strong rebounding and good shooting.

    Wellsville led 18-10 at the rst quarter break and 40-24 at halftime. The second half was a defensive battle.

    Gregory led MMA with 16 points and eight rebounds.

    A few of our key players were in foul trouble early, forcing us to change our game plan, said Maj. Pemberton.

    MMAs junior varsity team dropped a 45-29 decision in the opener. Matthew Spears and David Joung led the Colonels of assistant coach Lt. Nancy Schnell with eight points apiece.

    * * *The Colonels suffered a 67-60

    overtime loss at Gateway Academy of St. Louis on Jan. 10.

    This was a tough one to lose, said Maj. Pemberton. Things just didnt go our way at the end of regulation.

    The Colonels led with just a few seconds left, but Gateway man-aged to rally and send the contest into extra time.

    We couldnt put the game away. We have to do a better job of controlling the ball, said Maj. Pemberton. I thought our guys did do a good job of hustling.

    Gregory and Davis led the Colonels with 24 and 20 points, respectively.

    * * *MMA recorded a 55-42 victory

    over Tipton JV on Jan. 9 at Centen-nial Gymtorium.

    The Colonels trailed 12-9 after one quarter and 27-26 at halftime. They evened the count at 38-38 entering the nal frame.

    I thought our defense in the fourth quarter won the game for us, said Maj. Pemberton. We outscored Tipton, 16-3, in the fourth quarter. It was nice to get our rst win at home this year.

    Gregory again led the Colonels with 28 points and Davis added 12.

    MMA jayvees defeated Tipton freshmen, 33-27, in the opener behind sophomores Spears, Cole Hunter and Stephen Hasheeve-Sal-vato.

    * * *MMA fell at Higbee, 54-48, on

    Jan. 4.We had trouble shooting from

    the oor and the free throw line, said Maj. Pemberton. We cant turn the ball over 23 times and expect good things to happen. If we limit our turnovers, we win the game.

    Gregory scored 29 points.

    Junior heavyweight Manuel Camargo of Columbia, Mo., controls his Blair Oaks opponent en route to a pin in Centennial Gymtorium on Jan. 16. Camargo qualied for the state meet just before The Eagle went to press.

    The wrestling Colonels had a rollercoaster January in dual meets.

    Missouri Military Academy wrestlers split recently, winning at Wineld, 33-28, on Feb. 1, and falling to Centralia, 60-18, in Centennial Gymtorium on Jan. 29.

    In the Wineld match, Colo-nels posting victories by fall were sophomore Logan Branch at 125 pounds, senior Adrian Martinez at 160 and freshman Sea Jun Kang at 215.

    Junior Manuel Camargo posted an 8-2 win at heavyweight, while freshman Tommy Mansell at 130 and senior Alex Bozarth at 152 received forfeits.

    The 5-8 Colonels of rst-year head coach Capt. Ali Syed won three matches against Centralia.

    Senior Kyle Caperton needed just 33 seconds to pin his oppo-nent at 145, Martinez match went 1:27 before he won by fall, and Camargo posted a pin in 61 seconds.

    * * *The MMA Colonels took ve

    top-three nishes at the Priory Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 27 in St. Louis.

    Senior captain Martinez won the 160-pound category to lead the team. Second-place nishes went to Mansell at 130 pounds and Camargo at heavyweight.

    Colonels earning third-place medals were Branch at 125 pounds and Bozarth at 152.

    Our wrestlers did a very good job in this tournament, said Capt. Syed.

    * * *The wrestlers dropped a 53-24

    dual decision at Brentwood High School in St. Louis on Jan. 23.

    Winners for the Colonels were Branch, Mansell, Martinez and Ricardo Rodriguez, all by fall.

    Branch pinned his opponent at 125 pounds in 52 seconds. Mansell needed 2:31 to pin his foe at 130. Martinez scored his fall at 160 pounds in six minutes, and sophomore Rodriguez won in 1:43 at 189 pounds.

    * * *One MMA wrestler nished

    second and ve others nished third or fourth in the Jim Wallace Classic wrestling tournament Jan. 20 at Fulton High School.

    Our wrestlers did a very good job in this tournament, said Capt. Syed.

    Caperton nished second in the 145-pound weight class. Colonels Bryan Katt, Branch, Bozarth, Mansell and Camargo all nished third or fourth.

    * * *Blair Oaks High School

    downed MMA, 63-18, Jan. 16 in Centennial Gymtorium.

    The contest had been sched-uled as a double dual, with Wen-tworth Military Academy set to face MMA and Blair Oaks, but Wentworth forfeited and did not participate, forfeiting the state military title to the Colonels.

    We went against a very good Blair Oaks team that has a tremendous amount of talent, said Capt. Syed. They have more than a few wrestlers who are

    ranked in the state, and we knew it was going to be a tough one.

    Our boys hung in there and gave them good matches, although I expected some better performances. Manuel Camargo and Corey Filla won their respec-tive matches by pinning their opponents.

    Camargo won by pin early in the second period of his heavy-weight match, and Filla, a senior, won by fall 1:26 into his match at 171 pounds.

    Junior Bryan Katt won by walkover for MMAs other points.

    * * *The Colonels defeated the

    Wineld Warriors for the second time in a week Jan. 11 at Centen-nial Gymtorium, posting a 42-35

    victory. The dual came down to the nal match, when heavy-weight Camargo secured the win for MMA with a pin at 2:36 of the second period.

    Martinez also won by fall for the Colonels, pinning his oppo-nent at 160 pounds at the 4:24 mark in the third period. Other MMA winners were freshman Jackson Pavelka at 112, Branch at 125, Caperton at 145 and Bozarth at 152.

    * * *MMA wrestlers won their

    second straight dual Jan. 9, win-ning by a 66-18 count at Tipton High School.

    Five MMA wrestlers posted wins by fall, led by sophomore Anthony Wurl, who pinned his

    opponent in 45 seconds at 189 pounds. Bozarth won by pin in 46 seconds at 152 pounds, and Caperton needed just 59 seconds to pin his foe at 145.

    Also winning by pin for the Colonels were Martinez at 160 pounds and Mansell at 135.

    Winning by walkover were Camargo, Pavelka, Branch, Filla, sophomore Jung Soo Woo and freshman Carlos Guerra.

    This was by far our best overall team performance, said Capt. Syed. Tommy Mansell had been struggling in the down posi-tion, but he wrestled exception-ally well to avoid potential pin situations. Martinez faced a tough opponent at 160 pounds, but won by fall.

    * * *MMA defeated Wineld, 48-

    30, in wrestling dual action Jan. 5 at Centennial Gymtorium.

    Branch posted a victory by pin at 2:13 of the second period in the 125-pound weight class to start scoring for the Colonels. Bozarth won by fall at 3:39 in the 152-pound match. Martinez fol-lowed with a pin in 48 seconds at 160 pounds. Filla made it three straight wins by fall in 1:11 at 171 pounds.

    Colonels winning by walk-over were Pavelka, Camargo, Caperton, Wurl and Katt.

    The boys have shown a lot of improvement in their defensive skills, said Capt. Syed. I am pleased with our overall effort.

    Fajen honored for rifle accomplishments Rifle team edged in lone dual to dateThe Missouri Military Academy rie team dropped a close decision at St. Louis University High School on Jan. 17.

    The narrow loss, the rst since 2004, came by a 1,987 to 1,951 score, said MMA coach 1st Sgt. Randy Jacobson. MMA was 6-0-1 last season.

    For the Colonels, participating

    in their rst head-to-head dual match of the year, senior Nick Fajen came home with the individual gold medal after recording a score of 518.

    MMAs ensuing home match against arch-rival Wentworth Military Academy on Jan. 30 was postponed when Wentworth did not make the trip. It has not yet been rescheduled.
