struggling scientist; Mike Jamison, an airline pilot;
and Mike Tracy, an advertising executive. Who
does Marcy choose? Based on a real American

WINTER RETREAT 2017
SAVE THE DATE
MARCH 10–12 It‟s time again for our biennial Winter Retreat.
Winter Retreat is ACV‟s version of revival and
homecoming, all wrapped up together. Also this
year, ACV will host the Florida Conference of
Advent Christian Churches for their annual
meetings that same weekend, so it‟s sure to be an
exciting time.
To officially kick off Winter Retreat, comedian
Dennis Swanberg, “America‟s Minister of
Encouragement,” will bring his unique brand of
humor to the VC. Guests of all ages are sure to
enjoy his “40 years of wit coupled with a lifetime of
wisdom.” This is a ticketed event ($10 adults, $7
students); tickets may be purchased from the
Village Cashier or at the Village Lodge.
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Donna Petter.
An expert in Old Testament studies, Dr. Petter is a
teacher, a speaker, and an author. She wrote the
study notes on the book of Ezekiel for the New
International Version Zondervan Study Bible
(NIVZSB). She will deliver three messages (Sat.
evening and Sun. morning and evening) on the
theme “You don‟t know who you are until you
know whose you are!” from Ezra, Nehemiah and
Esther.
More specific information will be available in
coming weeks. The entire weekend promises to be a
most inspirational and enjoyable time as together
we renew old acquaintances, meet new friends, and
grow in our walk with our Lord and Savior. We
hope to see you there.

YES YOU CAN! If you can hold a pen or pencil, you can probably
hold a paint brush and create a lovely ceramic piece.
You will be thrilled and delighted that YOU painted
an animal, an angel, flower pot, or something that
you would like in your home. How about
something for your grandchild, a dear friend? YOU
CAN DO IT!
Come and look any Mon. from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
or 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and see what we have, ready for
your touch. Instructors are there to assist you. We
have the paints, brushes and pictures to give you
ideas of colors. Meet new friends and maybe find a
neighbor to share thoughts and ideas. We look
forward to seeing you. We are located beside the
Village Maintenance building. Phone: 658-5198.

VILLAGE VOICES – HAPPINESS IS… It is that time again. It is time to start thinking about
our new theme for Village Voices, 2017. What has
brought happiness to you? What do you think
happiness is? We are interested in hearing what you
have to say. Will you write a story about it to share
with others? We are asking you not to exceed 700
words per story. Or you could write a poem. We are
planning a workshop soon to help us all get started.
So keep watching the FNN for the time and date.
There will be suggestions and ideas to help you get
started.
PHOTO DIRECTORY Our Jan. 24 date is filled. Thank you. Those on the
short wait list should be prepared for a call. We will
do our best to accommodate you. For those signed
up, pictures will be taken at the VC. Come a few
minutes before your scheduled time. See you there.

Rehabilitation Project, a resettlement project in
Madison, FL founded during the Great Depression.
In the early 1930s, the federal government
embarked on an unprecedented series of projects to
jumpstart economic activity – President Franklin
Roosevelt‟s “New Deal.” The Federal Emergency
Relief Administration (FERA) was one of several
agencies coordinating this work. In the early 1930s,
FERA bought up 15,000 acres on the shores of
Cherry Lake and made plans for a community to
house families resettled from crowded urban areas.
The idea was to develop the land into a farm and
industrial plant that would sustain the inhabitants
and help take pressure off the cities. By 1935, well
over a hundred families had been relocated to
Cherry Lake from Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, and
elsewhere. Officially, the new settlement was called
the Cherry Lake Rehabilitation Project. This was
later shortened to “Cherry Lake Farms,” which was
the name given to the post office in Dec. 1935.

MOVIE MATINEE
“JACK AND THE BEANSTALK” Sat., Jan. 28, 2:00 p.m., OPR
Abbott and Costello star in this American family
comedy film. As is expected of their films, this
version of the classic children‟s fairy tale is
rendered raucous by the straight man humor of Bud
Abbott and the bumbling antics of Lou Costello.
Costello stars as Jack, a babysitter put to sleep by
his charge, who dreams the whole story, replacing
the storybook characters with those of his recent
real life. The movie follows the general storyline,
but with plenty of clean hilarity thrown in. 1952.
Color. Approx. 82 minutes. Not rated. ACV is able
to show this film because it is currently copyright
free and in the public domain.

IS GRIEF SHARE FOR YOU? Thur., Jan. 19, 2:00 p.m., VC Classroom 5
GriefShare is a 12-week, Christ-centered, biblically
based support group seminar. A grieving person
may join at any time during the 12 weeks. Each
session entails a video presentation followed by
small group discussions about comfort, answers and
hope. The GriefShare videos feature experts,
ministers, and Christian counselors discussing grief
and recovery subjects helpful to people
experiencing grief. Real people share their stories of
what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a
family member or friend through death. During
each week between meetings, group members may
complete a daily Bible study and study practical
exercises to help them work through their grieving
process. GriefShare is specifically for people who
have lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend
through death.
We have finished one complete cycle at the
Village Church and have found the program to be
very helpful to widows and widowers in our
community who not only have benefitted from the
resources GriefShare offers, but have also enjoyed
the fellowship of sharing with others who
experience similar burdens. Our next cycle will
begin on Thur., Jan. 19, at 2:00 p.m. in classroom
5. The group meets confidentially every week from
2:00 – 3:30 p.m., and the final session will be held
on Thur., Apr. 6 before Holy Week. If the
scheduled time is inconvenient for you and you are
still interested in the program, please call the church
anyway. If there is enough interest to develop an
evening session, we will be happy to provide that
opportunity.
If you think GriefShare might be for you,
please call the VC at 658-5344 and ask to speak
with Pastor Jason. I hope many of you will
prayerfully consider whether this might be a helpful
ministry to you and I look forward to walking with
you as the God of comfort leads us together through
your grief journey. Thank you, Pastor Jason.

will the new library open?” Craig Carter stated that
the construction is mostly finished and now the
work on the interior and the stocking of the library
is the next phase. A date for the opening has not yet
been set, but should be in the next few months. As
soon as the date is set, we will be sharing the news.
Another frequently asked question is, “Will the
library in the JR Ralph Smith Center remain open
after the new library opens?” Craig Carter says that
we plan to leave it open as long as it is being used.
If you were not able to attend the Annual Tax
Update offered by Nancy Harrison, CPA. on Mon.
and would like a copy of the handout from her
presentation stop by the Member Services Office
and pick up a copy. Nancy will begin holding
office hours at the VS on Feb. 7 for those who
would like to schedule an appointment with her for
their tax preparation. She can be reached at 386-
249-2944.
During the Christmas Season the Toy Tree at
the entrance to the Phillips Center had a new feature
this year. A handmade Christmas tree skirt made by
Rosemary Eakins, of CH, was used to highlight the
tree. We want to thank Rosemary for making the
skirt and also for donating it to be used in future
years.
Reminder: ACV has First Responders who are
available 24 hours a day to respond to emergency
calls for members. They are dispatched by the IC.
If you feel you are having a heart attack, stroke, or
other life threating event, please call 911 directly
for the quickest possible response, and if you are
able, call the IC to let them know as well.
If you leave a note at the IC requesting
assistance with a particular issue, please hand it
directly to the receptionist so she may ask for
clarification of the request and get your name so
follow-up can be provided, or additional
information obtained so the request can be properly
handled.
Member Services/Medical Transportation is in
need of additional wheelchairs to meet the needs of
persons being transported. If you have a wheelchair
you no longer need, please call 658-5150 to talk
about donating it. If you have borrowed a
wheelchair and not returned it, we would appreciate
the return of the chair.
Member Services Tip of the Week
When submitting an ad to the FNN, keep in mind
that only one ad per member/staff can be run each
week. If you have more than one ad, they can be
combined, or we can hold one of them for a future
edition. Each ad runs for two weeks unless you
notify us to remove the ad sooner. Also, if you do
not include your name on your submission, we
cannot place your ad until we reach you and verify
that you are eligible to advertise in the FNN. (You
must be a member or a member of our staff to be
eligible.) All ads are limited to eight lines of text.
VOLUNTEER SERVICES Eleanore Catarious – 658-5251
P.O. Box 4304
An interesting volunteer position has just opened
through the United Way to help families become
financially secure by becoming a Volunteer Tax
Preparer. There are five reasons to consider
becoming involved:
1. Receive free IRS training and certification in tax
preparation.
2. Learn valuable résumé-building skills.
3. Serve your community and give back.
4. Hours are flexible.
5. No prior experience necessary.
If interested in obtaining more information, please
call me.
NAMETAGS, NAMETAGS! Where are they
hiding – in pockets, on doorknobs, on dressers, in
walkers? It would be a good idea to put them
8
8
around your neck, or on your bodies for a few
important reasons:
1. Others will get to know and recognize you.
2. It helps new residents, especially, to be able to
put names with faces.
3. It is absolutely necessary in the event of an
emergency situation.
It‟s a new month in a new year and maybe it is a
good time to step up and out to make plans to
volunteer your time and talent, even if it is one hour
a week, or maybe even three or four. Lots of
opportunities await you in many areas of the
Village. Why not call me and make an appointment
to learn more about them. I am available Mon.
through Thur. from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. Thank you!
Adding up your blessings will multiply your joy.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
BUTTERFIELD ACRES Brenda Reas, Reporter
We wish a happy birthday to Arthur Sheldon on
Jan. 24.
Our BA New Year's dinner is coming up this
Sat., Jan. 21, at 5:00 p.m., in the SMR/DR. We look
forward to enjoying this catered dinner with
everyone who RSVP‟d. If you haven‟t yet paid for
your tickets, please bring $15 per person ($7.50 per
child) to the dinner.
This is from The Readers Digest Treasury of
American Humor: “My wife turned 50 last year,
and for her birthday dinner she arranged candles on
the cake to form the numerals 5 and 0. This year
the cake was decorated with a 4 and 9. I've begun
my countdown, she explained.”
Please send news to [email protected] or
call 658-3044.
CARTER HOUSE Catherine (Catt) Hill, Reporter
Happy birthday wishes go out to Charles
Mainwaring on Jan. 24. Welcome to Jeanine
Mordon, apartment 413. She likes to be called “J.”
She writes and illustrates children‟s books. How
lovely to have her here.
Rev. Ray and Donaline Brown welcomed a
great-granddaughter this past Sat., Jan. 14.
Congratulations! Good to see so many out enjoying
walks and such great weather.
Here we are with half the month of Jan. gone.
Looking forward to tomorrow. When it has been a
long day, you‟re tired, and one more task feels like
torture, you may think of everything you still have
to do. You may feel you need to lie down to escape
it all. Your days and week played out like the one
before. Your thought? Is my life going to be this
hectic and exhausting? Suddenly, you may hear a
conversation or music that brings you back to years
before. Your body relaxed and heaviness was lifted
from your eyes, your shoulders, and your heart.
Then with the wonderful people you met, there was
adventure, wonder, and discovery. Perhaps as the
music plays on, you felt a sense of hope. Memories
that reminded you that life wasn‟t always a struggle
and won‟t always be!
Remember: But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength. They will soar on wings
like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they
will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31.
Phyllis Mastro would like to donate her color
pictures with Bible scriptures to CH. They will be
hung by the elevator. She hopes you enjoy them as
much as she did coloring them for you. The Bible
says “Spread the Word.” The pictures are colored
on Sun. at 3:00 p.m. in the DH community area.
Come join them.
Lord, thank you for hope of a new tomorrow.
Have a wonderful blessed week! Please leave your
news at the CH front desk FNN box.
DACIER MANOR Beth Smith, Reporter
We are a few weeks late, but Happy New Year! We
started off our new year with birthdays! Happy
birthday to Lea Regele on Jan. 1, Mary Smith and
Ethel Wheeler on Jan. 2. We welcome Ethel
Wheeler to DM 1303 for several weeks. We are so
glad she is with us! We also welcome Anita
Watkins to DM 1212. She is enjoying having
daughters, Barb Kile and Joan (IL) helping her
settle into her new home. Mary Smith had a very
nice visit with her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda
and Dan Van Ness of Arlington, VA. We extend
our sympathy to Alice Masterson and her family in
the passing of Jim Masterson. A memorial mass
was held at St. Francis Xavier in Live Oak on Tue.
morning. Nelma Hamilton was recently
transferred to GSC. Nelma had resided with us
since May of 2014. Dorothy Nott also vacated her
DM room as she continues her rehab in Ocala closer
to family. We wish the very best for these ladies!
We hope to have Mary Giddens return to DM from
GSC Rehab this week! Several of our members are
not feeling well, so please remember them in your
thoughts and prayers!
ATTENTION TO ALL
I HAVE A PLEA FOR ALL WHO MINISTER
We need speakers for our Vespers Service on Wed.
afternoons at 3:00 p.m. It is usually 30 minutes of
a few familiar choruses followed by a devotional
and prayer. This has been a very special time for
our members. I know there are many who live at
ACV who can give 30 minutes of your time on one
Wed. If we can get 52 people to take one Wed., we
would be ecstatic! Please contact Beth or Crystal if
you feel the desire to minister here at DM, to share
your testimony, have a sing-along, and give a
devotional to encourage. This is such an important
ministry! Please help us keep it! Call 658-5552 to
give us your name and the Wed. you can be with
us. Thank you ahead of time!
Once again, I want to brag on the DM team for
holding down the fort and giving the best care
around while I was out for a couple of weeks. The
9
9
peace of mind that everyone will carry on when I
am unavailable speaks greatly of the staff at DM,
under the leadership of Crystal Delcastillo and
Nikki Rogers, and their endurance and resilience!
Thank you team!
DOWLING HOUSE Janice Chapman, Reporter
Happy birthday to Norma Wilkins, who will
observe a birthday on Tue., Jan.24. We trust you
will have a pleasant day and a year of God‟s
blessings ahead.
Gladys Ezell reports that last Sat. was a special
day. She was invited to attend her Family Cousins
Reunion near Mayo. She was delighted that she
attended as there were 64 attending. They came
from as far away as TX and everywhere in FL and
GA. It had been many years since she had seen just
about each one. It was great getting to know all of
them again and finding out about families she had
not heard from in many years. So many of them did
not know what had happened to her over the years.
They decided to have more reunions and Gladys is
all for getting together!
We miss Leamon Gill, who recently moved
from DH to DM. We welcome Dot Parker, who
moved to DH this past week. We welcome you to
our DH family and hope you will enjoy living
among us.
Pray for each other. Many who were ill are
feeling better. Thanks for your prayers on their
behalf. Continue to remember those you are aware
of who have become ill or have not yet recovered.
You may write out your item and put it in the
box at the front desk of DH with FNN NEWS
printed on it. You may also email me at
[email protected] or submit directly to the FNN
at [email protected], or phone me at 658-2015. We
like to share your good times and your special
concerns.
DOWLING MANOR/
DOWLING PARK NORTH Gayles Jones, Reporter
Greetings to all our friends and neighbors as we
swiftly move through Jan. We who garden are
looking to that time when we can trim off the freeze
debris and plant spring flowers. Alas, more
freezing weather may come; Mar. 1 is my target
date. We moved from WI where I had to wait until
June!
George and Carol Waterman sent a message
that I apologize for not getting to the FNN on time
for last week‟s issue. The Watermans were happy
to welcome their son Scott, his wife Melyca,
daughters Faith and Hope, and Melyca‟s mother
Karen Storman for the holidays. They all hail from
ME. Between Christmas and the New Year they
spent four days at Disney World. Highlights of
their visit also included driving Grampa‟s golf cart
all around the Village (almost as much fun as
Disney), visiting with long-time friends, Eric and
Jennifer Coombs, worship at the VC, a twilight
“Christmas Lights” tour on the Ride-About, and a
picnic at the Jewel Poole Gazebo on Lake Aquilla,
celebrating Gramma Carol‟s 78th
birthday. They
arrived back in ME on Jan. 2 just in time for high
snows and low temperatures!
How blessed we are to have this special time
with our families. Bill and Gayle Jones truly
enjoyed New Year‟s week with their family who are
missionaries in Nepal. The Smiths are home on
stateside assignment until the end of Feb. There will
be an OPEN HOUSE to introduce them to many in
our Village who have been praying for them. It will
be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 29, in
the OPR. The Joneses had their son, Bill Jr., his
wife Sandy, with Josh almost 18, Chris 16 and
Angel 15, this past weekend. Their holiday
celebration continues.
Please help me avoid missing your notices by
calling if I have not responded to your email in a
timely manner. I try to get my notices in late Mon.
or first thing Tue. The cut off time for entering them
is 12:00 noon on Tue. Thank you and keep
writing; it sounds great in your own words. 658-
1418 or [email protected].
EDGEWOOD TERRACE Joyce Comerford, Reporter
This has been a lazy week for me as I have tried to
rest as much as possible, eat regularly, and take my
cough medicine. Yes, I am still in the throes of a
cold, but expect this week to be much better.
Bob’s son, Rob, was in the area on business on
Mon. and stopped to have lunch with us. We were
happy to join Russ and Sharon Terjung in the
RDR, who also got to enjoy Rob‟s presence. (We
were taught in kindergarten to share.) Bob
managed to pass on some of his “treasures” to his
son, who was too polite to refuse them. We also
had him put some decorations in the attic so we
didn‟t have to climb a ladder. Isn‟t it great to have
relatives visit!
This week on Thur. we have the Membership
Council meeting. As a member of ACV, you are
automatically a member of the Council. Be sure to
come and hear what Dr. Nicely has to share with us.
We have two birthdays to celebrate this week -
Sharon McMann on Jan. 22 and Loretta Phillips
on Jan. 24. Best wishes to both of you. We wish
you a great day and a wonderful year ahead of you.
PARK OF THE PINES Bob Reynolds, Reporter
I love this warmer weather we‟ve been having. Do I
hear three cheers? The mornings are cool and then it
is “remove 1 item” time to be able to move around a
bit freer. Just make sure you are actually wearing at
least two items, okay?
Bob and Brenda Story recently spent two days
at Fernandina Beach (Amelia Island), FL. They
stayed at the historic Florida House Inn and were in
and out of several shops. Though chilly (!) they
went to the beach and observed huge waves rolling
in! No, they did not take a swim, says Bob! A
10
10
highlight of the trip was visiting Fort Clinch State
Park. The Fort, which was active during the Civil
War, is well worth a visit! They thank the Lord for
a nice, two-day get-away!
The Annie Moses Band was all it was hyped up
to be, right? What talent and all in the same family.
Have you any idea what it was like in the household
when some, or all of them, were practicing? How
about just three? This is not a criticism of their
electric equipment, but next time I will not sit in the
third row…. the front third row! I understand there
is like a vortex that if you are within that spectrum
(I hope that is the right description) it is pretty
awesome. A gentleman across the aisle said he
didn‟t think it was loud where he sat. I think he was
deaf! I remember attending a concert featuring Bill
Gaither in New Haven, CT, years ago with my
sister-in-law. We could not hear each other without
cupping our hands and talking loudly into the ear of
the other. It didn‟t work. There was a woman two
rows in front of us and by all indications the baby
(3-4 months) was sleeping through it all. Ah-h-h-h,
youth.
Here‟s one for you, taken from Benjamin R. De
Jong‟s “Uncle Ben‟s Quotebook”:
Quite matchless are her dark brown iiii,
She talks with perfect eeee,
And when I tell her she is yyyy,
She says I am a tttt.
SPECIAL FEATURES LIVE! AT DOWLING PARK ARTIST SERIES
Last Thur. our Village and many visitors were
entertained by an award-winning group of Julliard
trained musicians called The Annie Moses Band.
Annie Wolaver, the lead violinist and vocalist is
named for her “grandma” Annie Moses who led her
family from the cotton fields of TX to premier
concert stages all across America and around the
world. Annie‟s dad, Bill Wolaver, and her mother,
Robin, compose and arrange their music. Bill is the
group‟s pianist. His sons are violist Alex, and
cellist Benjamin. Annie‟s sister, Gretchen, also
sings and plays violin and banjo. Another sister,
Camille, who is the band‟s harpist and keyboard
player, was absent awaiting the imminent birth of
her baby. This amazing family of gifted musicians
played blue grass and the violins became fiddles.
They entertained us with songs by Stephen Foster
and some that were immortalized by Nat King Cole.
Familiar hymns expressed their message of a strong
family and deep faith. It was a great evening of
music and of hearing the story of Annie‟s
grandmother, Annie Moses, whose love of music
and determination to educate her family made this
fine evening possible for us. We send our many
thanks to Dick Grillo, who never fails to provide
quality performers, and next month we will have
“Three on a String” on Feb. 23, at 7:00 p.m. at the
VC. See you there!

CHURCH CHUCKLE Two little boys, ages eight and ten, were always
getting into trouble, and their parents didn‟t know
what to do about it. When they heard that a
preacher in town had been successful in disciplining
children, the boys‟ mother asked if he would speak
with her boys. The preacher agreed, but he asked to
see them individually.
The mother sent the eight-year-old in first. The
preacher, a large man with a booming voice, sat the
younger boy down and asked him sternly, “Do you
know where God is, son?” The boy‟s mouth
dropped open, and he made no response.
The preacher repeated the question in an even
sterner tone, “Where is God?” Again, the boy made
no attempt to answer. The preacher looked him
squarely in the eyes and said again, “Where is
God?”
The boy screamed and bolted from the room.
When his older brother saw him, he asked, “What
happened?”
The younger brother, gasping for breath,
replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time. God is
missing, and they think we did it!”
