He lived in SC for a short time when his parents, Ray and Evelyn Wagoner moved their family to Camden, SC for a couple of years before moving back to Wilkes County. Darryl has continued to be a resident of Wilkes County. Wilkes County is located on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Due to its wide range of elevation, Wilkes County’s climate varies considerably. Last fall Ron and I enjoyed visiting with AdamHuckabee of HickoryCity Schools. Adam is theDirector of Facilities forHickory City Schools, aposition he’s held since2011.

The city of Hickory is located primarily in CatawbaCounty, with formalboundaries extendingto Burke and Caldwellcounties.

According to Wikipedia, Hickory is home to one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the United States that is still located and operated on the original site. Hickory White, formerly known as Hickory Manufacturing Company, was built in 1902 and has been in continuous operation ever since. During World War II, the factory made ammunition boxes for the U.S. Military instead of furniture. Hickory was known in the years after World War II for the “Miracle of Hickory”. In 1944 the area around Hickory (the Catawba Valley) became the center of one of the worst outbreaks of polio ever recorded. Residents who were then children recall summers of not being allowed to play outside or visit friends for fear of contracting the disease. Since local facilities were inadequate to treat the victims, the citizens of Hickory and the March of Dimes decided to build a hospital to care for the children of the region. From the time the decision was made until equipment, doctors, and patients were in a new facility, took less than 54 hours. Several more buildings were quickly added. A Red Cross official on the scene praised the project “as the most outstanding example of cooperative effort he has ever seen.”

How to Determine Flow Rate

Sometimes codes just aren’t very helpful. Take Section 712.4.2 of the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and its insight into the selecting flow capacity for a sewage and ejector pumps:

712.4.2 Capacity. A sewage pump or sewage ejector shall have the capacity and head for the application requirements.

(Thanks, IPC….)

Clearly, having the proper flow is necessary to efficiently discharge wastewater from a commercial plumbing system – but how do you determine the flow rate for the sewage system so you can properly size the pump?

It’s really not so hard – common sense actually. Most engineers rely on the “What goes in must come out”method. In other words, they use a fixture count to determine the total flow rate, much like you would to determine the supply flow rate.

The Flow Calculation Sheet (Figure 1) shows the list of values assigned to the various types of plumbing fixtures that might exist in a project. Using this calculation sheet as an example, these are the steps for determining the flow rate for a sewage system:

· Identify all the fixtures and the associated unit value (column A) that contribute to the installation

· Multiply the fixture unit value (column A) with the total number of each type of individual fixture (column B) and list that value in the “Total Fixture Unit” column

· List the total number of each type of fixture (column B)· Add all the values in the Total fixture Unit column together to obtain the Total

Building Unit Count, which, in this case, is 800 · Find the Total Building Fixture Count (800) on the Hunter’s Curve to convert

the total fixture units to pump capacity in GPM and size your pump accordingly

Keep in mind that the IPC also requires a minimum flow rate of 2 feet per second to keep any entrained solids moving down the line.

Pipe Size and Pump Discharge Size

The IPC specifies that pumps or ejectors that receive the discharge from water closets be capable of handling spherical solid of up to 2-inch. Other pumps or ejectors shall be capable of handling spherical solids with a diameter of up to and including 1 inch. The IPC provides the following chart for reference on the diameter of the discharge pipe.

The above values assure that the velocity stays above 2 feet per second to prevent clogging of pipes. If a grinder pump is used, a smaller pipe size may also be used – as small as 1.25” to maintain adequate flow.

A Few Other Things to Keep In Mind…

Hickory City Schools has a total of nine schools; One traditional High School, one magnet High School, two Middle Schools, four Elementary Schools and one Primary School. The current enrollment is around 4,100.

On the day we visited, we were surprised to see Pat Annas. Pat is retired from the Hickory City School Maintenance Department. She was back working for a few weeks to train the new administrative assistant, Kim Lowman.

Frank Southers retired after serving many years as the Hickory City Schools Maintenance Director. Around that same time the Associate Superintendent over Operations and Finance also retired. The organization chart was reorganized, and the position of Facilities Director was added to combine the duties of the Maintenance Director and Operations Director. Adam was working for Hickory Construction Company as a Project Manager at the time. In his construction management job he was away from home often and he was looking for a career change in order to be home more. He applied for the Hickory City Schools Facilities Director position and was pleased to get the job. Terry Huff who had been with Hickory City Schools for 5 years became the Maintenance Supervisor. Including Adam and Kim, the maintenance department has nine full time employees. Adam said most of the employees have been with the department for many years.

Adam showed us a ring of keys he was presented when he first began his new job. He said one of his first goals was to change that situation. He then showed us the “key” he uses now. Adam is in charge of activating the “key cards” for the school system. Cook and Boardman along with KNC helped him with the re-keying and card access set up, and Greg Dobis with DSS Carolinas helped him develop a key policy.

Adam is a graduate of Appalachian State University. He has been a member of the NC Army National Guard for around 16 years total, though not consecutive. He left for eight years and then returned. His duties with the National Guard take him away from time to time. There are training courses - which also help with his position in maintenance - and of course when disasters happen, he is called away. Adam said one of the biggest challenges for him at work is he feels like he’s always “playing catchup.” The maintenance staff is well trained and handle things correctly under Terry’s supervision when he is away, but there are many things that he alone handles. He said he has a lot of great ideas for the department and would like to have more time to implement them. Another challenge is the turnover of teachers. With three school systems in the county of Catawba as well as schools in Burke

DESIGNING COMMERCIAL SEWAGE LIFT STATIONS PART ONEAlong with your standard fixture counts, don’t forget to include higher volume components such as drainage from body showers, cooling towers, etc.

Also, don’t be confused by the following Drainage Fixture values shown in the IPC Table 709.1 below. These values (as the Code states) should only be used for calculating drainage pipe size, not the flow capacity needed for the sewage or ejector pump. It is best to use supply side fixture values for calculating flow.

Finally, check with local codes, which always supersede the IPC. Chances are adhering to the IPC will be okay….but you never know until you check!

and Caldwell Counties so close proximity wise, teachers have an opportunity to change school districts easily.

Even though he is a very busy man with his work and the National Guard, Adam makes time to attend the NCPSMA Eastern and Western Conventions. He is devoted to spending time his family. He and his wife Alicia have been married for 18 years. They have three daughters, ages 16, 14 and seven. All three daughters play soccer and are on travel teams, so they spend a lot of time on the road traveling to and from games. In May of 2019 Adam completed his first 100 mile race in Marietta, SC. He told us a little about the race. Running 100 miles, nonstop in one go. What training it takes and what endurance it takes to finish! It took Adam 36 hours to complete. I can’t even imagine!

We had a great time visiting with Adam, getting to see Pat again and meeting Kim. We are thankful to Adam for taking the time out of his busy day to meet with us.
