“B owdoin is recognizedas one of America’sleading liberal artscolleges because of our

outstanding academic and residential lifeprograms, the scholarship and dedication ofour faculty, and the extraordinary talent andpromise of our students.

Every day of my presidency, I havemade it my goal to promote innovation inour curriculum and program while alwaysprotecting what gives Bowdoin thatdistinction—its fundamental excellence anddeep character. Serving as the president ofBowdoin has been my great joy and privilege, and I could not have done any of what wehave accomplished together withoutgenerous alumni and parents, exceptionalfaculty and staff, and students of the highestcaliber.

But we have work yet to do. When welaunched the Bowdoin Campaign in 2006,I said that we faced a challenge to secure

“The friendships Ihave made, in somany areas of thecampus, arefriendships that willtruly last a lifetime. The new relationshipsI have begun to makewith the Bowdoin alumni network as I go about my career search have proven to beinvaluable, including discovering connectionsand mentors as I engage with the new, ‘realworld’ Bowdoin community. The knowledge Ihave gained in my classes contributes to myeducation, but the critical, analytical, andcreative thinking skills, as well as theinterpersonal and communication skills Ihave developed, will be with me forever.

I know as the time passes, my affinity forBowdoin will only become stronger. I amexcited and prepared to go into the world withmy Bowdoin education behind me, and I amlooking forward to what the future brings.Thank you again for your generosity over theyears. The appreciation is felt not only by me,but my family as well, who are fully aware ofyour gift to my education. It means more thanyou know.”

James Boeding ’14

James is currently living in Portland, Maine, and working for a small healthcare analyticscompany called iVantage. He is a member ofthe Maine Running Club, Dirigo, and recentlycompeted at the Cross County Club NationalChampionships.

“My environmentalstudies classesfundamentally changedthe way I view ourenvironment, made merevisit my conception ofnature and wilderness, and reminded me thatpeople’s happiness and livelihoods matterimmensely in the fight to preserve our naturalworld. I even got to explore my relationship withmy country, Haiti, through a Francophoneliterature class that provided a conceptualframework for thinking about cultural identity.

At Bowdoin, I grew not only intellectually, but also spiritually, emotionally, and socially.I became emboldened in my exploration ofimportant questions in life, such as morals, ethics, and virtue. . . . From a timid boy in highschool, I became more confident in my socialskills. I have made friends that mean so much tome that I get overwhelmed with gratitude at themere thought of them. I believe I have gainedsome wisdom and a better understanding of whoI am, from my strengths to my many flaws. Ihave explored and pondered the concepts offriendship, of manhood, of what it means to bean adult, to live a good life, and so on. Andperhaps most fortunately, I have realized theimportance of an honest assessment of oneself, and of generosity.”

Claude Patrick Millet ’14

After graduation, Patrick returned to his nativeHaiti, where he is focusing on conservationscience and environmental work.

“I always have hadan inkling that Iwould major in thesciences, and Idecided to chooseneurosciencebecause it was themajor that seemedto incorporate the many different fields ofscience under one name. I am able tostudy psychology, biology, and chemistryall at the same time!

I am very happy with what Bowdoin hasoffered me so far, and I am excited to seewhat the next two years will bring. One day,I am hoping that having attended Bowdoinwill allow me to help others like you havehelped me.”

Ariana Bourque ’16

Ariana is a member of the women’s hockeyteam, volunteers with Team Impact, andworks for Bowdoin Dining Services. She isconsidering a career in medicine.

The Impact of Financial AidAccess, Opportunity, Innovation

Bowdoin’s promise in a way that both protectsand transforms this remarkable place, andwhat we have achieved in that campaign andsince then has accomplished much in thatregard. But I have goals left to meet beforewe are done, and I need your help.

First and foremost on my list is the criticalneed to advance that promise by securingcontinued and improved access for the mosttalented students. We must make it possiblenot only for every admitted student to come toBowdoin, we must build our resources for aidso that there is no trade-off, ever, for them tochoose Bowdoin over somewhere else.

Access, opportunity, and innovation—concepts that represent the ways wetransform and protect this remarkable place, and the touchstones of my presidency. Withyour help, I will work every remaining day tomake them my legacy as well.”
