Starting at Kista centre and continuing through Helenelund, the 1600 meters axis is a critical vain, potentially, a source of future promising development.

From commercial intensity the large “kista galerian” through the rows of high-tech industry companies, ending in suburban serenity, the axis could generate a lively and vibrant environment, yet it does not.

Although during the day time this vain is busy with activity at night it is desolate, people that work and interact at this place during the day leave elsewhere and retire to their homes or chose their night life locations elsewhere.

Transportation is mostly private vehicles, busses and taxis, and traditionally moves on the street level.

Food facilities are at the centre, along the street (very sporadic) or at the eastern end of the axis at Helenelund.

Culture, night life, lodging, entertainment, leisure are hardly existing, less the centre at one side and Kista pair in the middle.

Add to that situation a communication bottle-neck transition in the shape of a minimal tunnel under the highway and the suburban train tracks between Kista and Helenelund

And you have a failed and unused artery.

We are engaged in trying to reveres, improve and vitalize this axis.

The following projects are an attempt to show the potential of an already economically dynamic region, we believe that “Silicon Kista” should be upgraded and achieve the same excellence in the culturally built environment as in its scientific existence, we know that the better mix with Helenelund and Solentuna shall generate a brave new world, our projects speak of potential. Enjoy!

Like alcohol through the veins of a body, the restaurants and bars of BrickLane flow through the Silicon Valley of Kista.

The street is lined by network, technology and digital offices, behind which lies a high density residential area to house its young and ambitious professionals. Single dwelling villas beyond serves the established executive family (wo)man. Kista is a cybernetic city where commercial, corporate or residential architecture form the nodes within an infrastructure of urban, digital or human communication networks.

After work in BrickLane is to active Kista after office hours. BrickLane is a destination for bar hopping. A phenomena that still has not quite found its way into Stockholm’s urban fabric and tradition. It is a place for laid-back professional networking. Whether it is with a caesar salad for lunch, a coffee on the go, a bloody steak for dinner, a glass of fine wine to round off the day, or a cigar and malt whisky to seal the deal - BrickLane is the arterial vain that ties its networks together.

Vehicular access is removed. The proposed tramline is raised, under which a series of pavilions offer you a well deserved pint. The tram and associated string of bars is not only a

aWAFTER WORK IN BRICK LANE

commentary on, but also form a convenient solution to drink driving. Leave your car at the parking office, stroll a block to your duplex penthouse for a nightcap or take the skyline to continue the night in the city.

The programme translates from boutiques and cafes by the Kista Galleria in the West into relaxed pubs and high-end international restaurants and bars. The early evening culminates in the event of the night at the champagne bar housed above the tram station in front of Victoria Tower. The East end of the skyline, at the Helenelund side of the highway, the programme diverts into daytime and weekend activity including cafes, a bakery, a patisserie, a florists and fruit and vegetable markets.

BrickLane provides a lifestyle for families and young professionals. It is a place where you rendezvous with friends, run into a colleague or shake hands with a new business acquaintance. You are compelled to stop for a drink. One that may become the smartest business move of your career.

BrikLane thrives on the mantra to work hard / play hard.It is a pleasure to do business!

In opposition to traditional bridge/road construction where large columns are placed with a wide spacing, this proposal is constructed from eight slender concrete modules placed to form a forest of columns. Each profile is arched with the column hitting ground at five alternative alignments at ground to form a free composition. Like train sleepers, the waffle slab above is open to let natural lighting through to landscaped areas and closed to form the primary roof to pavilions below.

The concrete aggregate is infused with iron particles to provide a rusty orange tone aging over time. The pavilions below are fixed architectural pieces of glass to allow maximum openness to either side of the tram line. Intermittent brick wall construction for enclosed spaces is to tie in with the materiality of the street as a whole. This finish is naturally adjusted to suit the surrounding environments as the train progress through the neighbourhood.

Kista, an monofunctional remote district receives new breath of life.

At 12:00 during the day Kista seems to be a nice, lively area of dynamic development and capitalistic pursuit of wealth. The cafes are packed with office workers, businessman and academic people having lunch, a break in their busy day. But what happens when all these people leave and go home after? What does Kista become during that time in the evening? Where do they go?

Most certainly away from there. In this time atmosphere of Kista makes a 180 degree turn. Abandoned offices, shops and facilities are left without life and wait for the next morning to regain it again. Our project deals with that situation, trying to intervene with filling the gap of what’s missing.

Kista can most certainly be classified as a district of dominating particular functions - work facilities, offices and business centres. That made us think of possibility achieving a state of balance between them and other functions in peoples life.

i sta upper levelWe decided to insert an accommodation system of a large scale with some green and recreational spaces. This system, as it seemed most logical we put on top on the existing urban system, since for now it was mostly saturated. The structure has a natural communication system using staircases of existing buildings extended by few levels. From there galleries were spread connecting them. This created a natural environment with repeatable housing units, but taken 20 meters up into the air. But something was still missing - trees, nature and recreational spaces.

This issue we decided to solve by connecting sides of the raised “strips” with green terraces and communal, shared spaces underneath. That way we achieved also a communication system allowing to reach every desired point and bringing people together. Each set of accommodation units has its own terrace in proximity and shares it with few others. Many events and activities can be held there, replacing a traditional function of a park and possibly even more.

New life in Kista will sustain 24/7 making the area a complete, balanced city district. From a temporary, specialised place Kista gains qualities that it used to lack.

A productive landscape to connect communities.

We aim to connect the communities of Helenelund and Kista. Two communities divided by highway, railroad and the disused land surrounding them. The concept involves making this land usable.

The site becomes a landscape that needs to cater for both commercial and residential users. The gap is filled with agriculture and industry. This ecological landscape becomes a natural buffer providing more desirable spaces within the context of the site. Large greenhouses with extensive planting provide a shield to the park and the buildings from the pollution and noise of the highway.

The greenhouses are places for both communities to enjoy and utilise. They hold fruit trees and fresh produce that cannot withstand the typical Swedish climate, crops such as vegetables and barley that can be used in the restaurants and a brewery for the community, and a tropical botanical garden for leisure. Our concept is not only to connect the communities physically with a communal space to be used by all, but also in the

EOPLE TO THE PRODUCEnetwork of produce and industry. The barley that grows in the greenhouse is used for the brewery, and the produce from the brewery is distributed by tram to the local establishments such as those in “Brick Lane” and the “King Carl Tower”.

Water provides another connection. An adaptable feature within the landscape that can become a place for leisurely activities in the Summer and a form of transport in the winter - the daily commute for the thousands of workers on ice skates.

Similarly , industries involving water could utilise this source - a building could become a water treatment plant and help with the problem of surface run off from the highway.

Kista is already an area of industry and “People to the Produce” is about enhancing and enriching the growing development but in a self sustaining and ecological way. Industries of production “from the seed to the table.”

The built environment surrounding the one-mile axis consists of a mixture of residential, commercial and retail buildings. A void exists between the residential and commercial, hence People to the Produce aims to draw in a diverse range of people within this community to the natural environment.

This natural open space provides residents and commercial workers with area to relax outside their normal routine. It allows for the possibility of two different communities to interact and connect socially; acting as a vehicle for strengthening the future of the neighbourhood.

A rising sport track for a healthy way of life.

Kistaloppet 2.0 is an overall concept about sport and housing. It consist in a giant spiral running track that goes all the way up to the top of the tower. In the thickness of the « track » we aim at incorporating housing units. The tower is 420 meters high and allowed 650 apartment to be built. Thanks to this giant housing operation we bring at least 2200 people in the new area of Kista contributing to the development of this cutting edge city.

The housing units are built following a very easy a cheap way. Each round of the spiral could be divided by several bearing wall into as many apartments as needed. Then the tower propose a range of apartments from the 5 or 6 rooms family apartment to the student studio improving the social

i staloppet 2 .0experience. This new typology brings a new way of living moreover it proposes a 360° views and all the apartments are double oriented. People can enjoy the neighbourhood without being disturb by any vis-a-vis.

Therefore housing is not enough to attract people and convert Kista into a dynamic city. Thus we aim at stacking different sport facilities in the tower from the small local sauna unit to the big public gymnasium. As a consequence the whole building is a sport complex itself. From a running track in summer it becomes a winter cross country skiing track in winter. The kistaloppet 2.0 could be used in many different way and it could become a great sport event to climb the tower from the bottom to the top.

Once upon a time there was a small town just outside Stockholm called Kista. Kista wasn’t very pretty but everyone knew that one day Kista would flourish and become a beautiful neighbourhood. In Kista everyone arrives early and works very hard and for a very long time on their computers. After a long day working in Kista many people wanted to have some fun. However after work the streets are empty, silent and uninspiring so they get on the train or metro and leave. The Princess Victoria tower stands there in darkness, lonely and uninhabited. One day Princess Victorias father came to visit: “Don’t you kids have any fun around here?! This place is as dull as f...!” The king himself took matters into his hands and in no time at all a new shiny tower grew and illuminated Kista’s night sky. Its pink glow could be seen from miles away and people rushed from Stockholm to come and visit this beautiful attraction. As they quickly figured out, this place was the new home to all sorts of pleasure. Open mostly during nightime, the biggest theme park for adults ever built was soon overcrowded and Kista became a very popular site. Workers would now spend their day at the office eager for nightfall which meant an evening of guilty fantasies. No one wanted to leave Kista. Kista had Victoria during the day and Gustaf at night!
