These words are homophones. Homophones are two or more words that sound the same but have
different spellings and meanings.
![Page 7: The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere Word Structure.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062407/56649f475503460f94c697be/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
It is easy to make a mistake by writing one homophone when you
mean another. Make sure you are alert of
homophones when you proofread your writing.
![Page 8: The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere Word Structure.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062407/56649f475503460f94c697be/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Sometimes you will need to use context clues to
determine the correct meaning of the homophone
in a particular sentence.

What are the rules for forming regular plurals?
• For words that end in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add –es, as in cities.
• For words that end in a vowel and y, just add –s, as in keys.
• For some words that end in f or fe, change the f or fe to v and add –s, as in leaves.
• For words that end in a consonant and o, you add –s, as in pianos.
• For words that end in o preceded by a vowel, just as –s, as in radios.
• For words that end in s, z, ch, sh, or x, just add –es.
