NOVEMBER VOTING INFORMATIONFROM MONMOUTH COUNTY CLERK

Dear Voter, Governor Murphy has signed a law mandating that all active registered voters must receive mail-in

ballots for voting in the November 3, 2020 General Election. This is a major change to the process. Here are the important points for you to know:

1. tIMING For MAIL-IN bALLotS: If you’re an active registered voter in Monmouth County, your ballot will be mailed to you automatically no later than October 5, 2020. It is critical that you vote and return your ballot EARLY in this election season. Don’t delay. If you have not received a ballot by October 13, please contact the County Clerk’s Office at 732-431-7790.

2. retUrNING MAIL-INbALLotS: You can return your ballot in one of four ways--- 1) via U.S.P.S. (all ballots will have a postage paid return envelope); 2) via secure ballot drop boxes located throughout the County (check MonmouthCountyVotes.com for locations); 3) by dropping it off at the Board of Elections Office in Freehold; or 4) by bringing it to your polling location on Election Day.

3. LIMIteD PoLLING LocAtIoNS/PAPer ProVISIoNAL bALLotS: All voters will receive a post card with their local polling locations, which will be very limited this year. Voting machines will only be available to those voters who need an ADA accessible ballot marking device because they are unable to vote a paper ballot. As mandated by Governor Murphy, all other voters who want to vote at polling locations on Election Day will be given a provisional paper ballot for voting. This ballot will look identical to the mail-in ballot that you receive in the mail. There will be no voting machines, except for disabled voters. If you feel strongly about going to polling locations, it’s best to bring your completed mail-in ballot and simply drop it off.

4. If you have a disability and need an accessible vote by mail ballot, please contact the County Clerk’s Office at 732-431-7790.

In order to provide timely election results, it is strongly encouraged that you vote and return your mail-in ballot for this unprecedented election process as soon as you receive it. If you choose to vote on a paper provisional ballot at the polls, your ballot will be counted after all of the mail-in ballots are counted.

For up-to-date information and answers to frequently asked questions, visit the Monmouth elections website, MonmouthCountyVotes.com.

Sincerely,Your County Election Offices:

BOOK BUFFSOn Tuesday, October 20, the Book Buffs

will meet at 4 PM to compare and contrast two books: The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson, and The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. These two novels about the Packhorse Library Project of the WPA during the Great Depression sparked concerns about the similarities and timing of publication. It should be a good discussion! As the Clubhouse remains unavailable, watch the bulletin boards for announcements of a physical location versus Zoom meeting. In November the group will consider Underground by Will Hunt.

ELECTION 2020 UPDATE

The Mews News always tries to offer our readers timely and important information. In this critical election year, there is no more important discussion than the need for us all to have the opportunity to vote for the candidate of our choice. We have been made aware that some readers felt that our September article was confusing. Recently, however, a mailing from the Monmouth County Clerk of Elections has given clarity to the 2020 election process in New Jersey. Accordingly, we are reprinting that Letter to Voters in this issue of the Mews News, along with telephone numbers and websites you can use, if you have further questions.

One of the very secure ways to cast your vote in the November election will be to complete the ballot you receive in the mail, and then take it to one of the 24-hour ballot boxes that are being set up. For this election, the number of ballot boxes in Monmouth County has been increased from three to seventeen. This procedure has always been available in New Jersey, and is used almost exclusively in several states, like Colorado. The three ballot boxes closest to Fairway Mews are: 1. Wall Township Municipal Building, 2700 Al-

laire Road2. Belmar Municipal Building, 601 Main Street3. Neptune Municipal Building at the Library

entrance, 25 Neptune Boulevard. You are also able to deposit your ballot directly

at the Board of Elections office in Freehold, 300 Halls Mill Road, Freehold, at the side entrance.

COUNTRY CLUB NEWSBy Kathleen Walk

October is generally known as the month of haunts, scares, ghouls, leaves changing color and falling from the trees, beautiful fall colors and the first frost of the year settling in. It is a great time to be at the Mews.

I have orders for 56 additional bricks. Thank you all for participation in this endeavor. From the previous 76 bricks purchased, $6,000 was given to purchase the beautiful awnings for the Clubhouse. The additional funds for the awnings came from the Community Chest funds.

We had live music by Nick, September 4, at the Clubhouse Patio Area. He entertained us with all your favorite songs. The next live music event was held September 22 by Bob Egan and Aileen Stahl. They entertained us with Bob’s fabulous music and Aileen’s amazing voice. This wonderful event brought the community together in these trying times.

There is open Bocce every Monday and Tuesday.Thank you for supporting our events.

Cheers

ATTENTION: BRIDGE PLAYERSby Jo Tull

When we again have access to our lovely enlarged Clubhouse, we wish you would consider joining one of the bridge groups here at the Mews. There is the ‘regular’ bridge group (Chicago scoring) which meets every week on Thursday at 1 PM in the clubroom. There is also a partner duplicate bridge (you bring your own partner) on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, again in the clubroom at 1 PM. There are also opportunities to substitute in either of these groups.

In addition, there are two-table duplicate groups, one of which meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month and the other on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at 12:30 PM. These groups also need subs from time to time.

While golf keeps you fit physically, bridge will help keep you mentally fit.

A reminder--this game is not exclusively for women—we heartily welcome the male population as well. Come join us!

Give me a call with any questions you may have.

PRESIDENT’S NOTESBy Tom Basile

The September meeting of the FMCA Board of Directors was held on September 15, 2020. Unlike the August meeting this meeting was closed to the community. However, it was videoed and will be made available to the community. On the advice of our attorney and with an abundance of caution, it was decided that we would follow the best practices of condominium associations throughout the state. When you see the video, it is just like you are there. It is not Hollywood but you will receive the same information that the Board was given. Traye, our manager, had solicited questions from the community to be presented in the “open session.” These were also addressed by the Board.

As Traye noted, the annual meeting of FMCA for the purpose of electing board members will be October 6, 2020. This meeting will be attended by the association presidents, whose task it is to elect members of the FMCA Board. This year we have three board members up for reelection: Tony Kluxen, Vice President and Chair of the Golf and Architecture Committees, Kevin McAteer, Chair of the Insurance Committee, and Michael Corrigan, Chair of the Human Resource Committee. I strongly endorse each of these men who have had a significant impact on the FMCA Board and on behalf of the Fairway Mews community.

Enjoy the fall weather and be well.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGERBy Traye Blackburn

The “locals’ summer” season is here! It is a great time to enjoy our community, beach and town with great weather and no summer crowds. The kids are back to school (although some may be virtual), football is on TV and the leaves will soon begin to change colors.

The FMCA Board of Directors annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. Three FMCA Board members will seek re-election. The Board Members whose terms will expire next month are Mr. Tony Kluxen, Vice President, Chairman of Architecture and Golf Committees; Mr. Kevin McAteer, Director and Chair of the Insurance Committee and Mr. Michael Corrigan, Director and Chair of the Human Resource Committee.

Our golf course, like many others around the state,is experiencingamazing popularity. On Sunday of Labor Dayweekend there were 130 rounds played! The golf course is a great, safe place to be right now! When you are out on the course, please be sure to yell “FORE,” if you hit an errant shot to give our residents a chance to take cover!

Also, when looking for a lost ball, do not invade the privacy of a resident’s patio area, open garage etc. Congratulations to all of our FM Golf Champions!

Moving forward until the current pandemic situation changes, the following will remain in place:

• Fairway Mews Board of Directors meetings will remain a “closed meeting” until further notice. The meeting will be videoed and will be sent out to all FM residents. The open session portion of the meeting will still be conducted. To submit a question, email the Main Office [email protected] with your name, address, and question by the Friday before the Tuesday meeting. We will do our best to answer the question on the spot or do some research for an answer in the very near future. If any resident would like to receive board meeting minutes, please contact the Main Office and they will be emailed to you.

• The Main Office will continue to operate by phone 732-449-8565 or email,[email protected] only. There are mailboxes outside the office for any kind of paper transaction; contact us and we will get you whatever you may need.

• The Clubhouse will also remain closed in every aspect until further notice.

• The Golf Shop is open under the State of New Jersey non-essential retail rules & regulations. This means: a mask is required to enter the Golf Shop, only 4 customers are allowed at one time, a complimentary mask/sanitizing station is pro-videdand a sneeze guard has been installed at the front counter.

Now is a good time to revisit rule # 13 from the FM Community Rules & Regulations. The Rules & Regulations in its entirety, can be found on our web site at www.fairwaymews.org. Rule # 13 -- No owner or occupant shall plant new or maintain any existing permanent trees, shrubs, bushes, or otherwise landscape any portion of the common elements, or common property of the Association, unless written permission is first obtained from the Board of Directors. No modification to landscaping or the exterior of the physical unit is permitted without a timely modification application and subsequent approval from both the lo-cal and FMcA board.

Do not forget, every unit is now obligated to have their dryer vent cleaned by a NJ licensed contractor and provide proof of that service to the FM Main Office by March 1, 2021.

The Main Office will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2020 for the columbus Day holiday. Thanks, and stay safe!

As the Summer comes to an end, we arrive at the best time of the year to play golf… The Fall!! With the mild temperatures and less crowds, take advantage of this time of the year! Club Championship was a success, congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all that participated to helpmake it a great event.

The Professional Staff is having a busy season on the lesson tee, if you would like to schedule a lesson please reach out to Dan Or Rob. All in all, even though it was a difficult year with COVID-19 restrictions, FMGC Members and Staff made it a great year!

Lastly, stop by the Golf Shop as we transition into Fall & Holiday Apparel for Men and Women! The Golf Shop will have selections for all your fall and holiday needs, plus we gift wrap!! As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Tip of The MonthGet A Grip

How often should you re-grip your golf clubs?

Material, weather, playing frequency, sunscreen, sweat, pressure, even your wedding ring can affect a grip's lifespan. Thus, as car ads claim, your mileage may vary. Manufacturers suggest changing your grip every 60 rounds, or whenever they become hard or cracked (which often occurs if they have been sitting unused for a few months). Re-gripping clubs can be greatly beneficial towards lowering scores because the first step to every golf swing is the grip! If a golfer has poor grip it can lead to club face issues which can negatively and drastically affect the ball flight. Stop by the Fairway Mews Golf Shop and see if it might be time for you to upgrade your grips and better your game.

A GREAT DAY FOR FAIRWAY MEWS!By Anne Tarrant

Don’t you love it when guests come to The Mews and are visibly impressed by what we have here? It makes us all proud to hear comments about the natural beauty, outstanding condition and surprisingly challenging nature of our golf course, as well as the intangible sense of hospitality, tranquility and all-round appeal of this little slice of heaven.

Our Fairway Strong Scramble and Fundraiser was one of those opportunities for us to enjoy and celebrate our home, and for guests to marvel at this unique and remarkable community. The event was a huge success thanks to the coordinated efforts of a small group of very efficient people, who generously gave of their time and talents.

When our board of directors hired Daniel O’Malley, we didn’t just get a great Club Professional; we got a gentleman with skills and attributes that elevate our club to a new level. His ‘no-problem’, ‘can-do’attitude makes it so much easier to stage an event like Fairway Strong. Ably assisted by Rob Hirzel, Dan managed the event with calm efficiency, and endless patience! It was a pleasure from start to finish.

Our thanks go to the terrific volunteers and to everyone who helped out including George James, Joanne Kenny, Barbara Reynolds, Joanne James, Tom Kane, Maeve O’Malley, Edie Crum, Valerie Able, Maria Pinto, Joanne Manley, Bridget Lowy, Rita Watson, John Perry, John Kelly, and our very popular Beverage Cart Girls, Jenn Stautz and Ainsley Keating.

Proceeds from the event benefit our Community Chest, which distributes monies for the direct benefit and enhancement of the community, based on submissions from residents. Any group, club, or individual in Fairway Mews may submit a proposal or request for funds for a specific purpose which they believe will benefit their group, and the community at large.

Huge thanks to our Fairway Strong Sponsors, many of whom are vendors to our community. Please acknowledge and support them with your business when possible. They are Brown & Brown Insurance, Live Oak Landscaping, Jon Ran Construction & Roofing Contractor, Dr. John A. Schmidt Jr. M.D., JD Home Designs, Monmouth Computer Associates, Erin Masonry, Cymru Lawn Sprinklers, J&M Vent Cleaning, The Catelli Law Firm, John F. Mann P.E., Touch of Gold Gutters and Just Us Girls.

The following residents also provided valuable and greatly-appreciated sponsorship: Tom and Elaina Basile, Valerie Abel, Albers Gerrard Family, Flo and Al Astoreca, Tizzl Benthien, Donald & Suzanne Boehmcke, Janet Casey, Frank & Kathy Cavalieri, Kyle Coleman, Lynne

& Dennis Dowling, Joe Furfaro, Claire Harty, Marlene Howard, Dorothy Ihde, George and JoAnn James, Lynn B. Kegelman, John Kelly, Terri and Kevin McAteer, Al and Gloria Mizhir, Adele and Joe Milanowycz, Mike Nayden, Helen and John Nugent, Maeve O’Malley, Maria Pinto, Linda Primerano, Mo and Ron Schwarz, Len and Mary Smoke, Nancy and Joe Tuohey, Kathleen Walk, Mens Golf League, Ladies 18-Holers, Ladies 9-Holers, and the following FM Associations: Phase 2-1, Phase 3-0, Phase 4-0, Phase 6-2.

We greatly appreciated all Fairway Mews staff, and in particular Joe Beaudoin, Joan Stopa and Marilyn Daly who provide essential behind-the-scenes assistance.

Lastly and importantly, thank you to our manager Traye Blackburn, Tom Basile and our Board of Directors, and to Tony Kluxen and our Golf Committee, whose vision and encouragement made this event possible.

SO WHAT IS THE SOLHEIM CUP??by Geoff Blake

If you’re like me, a non-golfer living in Fairway Mews (there are a good number of us) you saw the pictures in the September issue of the Mews News showcasing the teams for the Solheim Cup tournament. I’m sure you said, “What nice pictures.” You also said, “What in blazes is the Solheim Cup?” I was one of those people, so I thought that I should investigate this tournament in order to enlighten the non-golfer members of our community.

The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers. Teams representing Europe and the United States vie for the Cup over a three day period of play. The tournament is named after the Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim, who was a driving force behind its creation.

The inaugural Cup was held in 1990, and the event was staged in even number years until 2002, alternating with the Ryder Cup, the equivalent men’s event. After the

one-year postponement of the 2001 Ryder Cup following the September 11 attacks, the Solheim Cup switched to odd numbered years beginning in 2003.

The United States teams have won the cup the most times, with 10 wins compared with Europe’s 6 wins. Europe is the current holder of the cup. The next contest will be at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, in 2021.

I hope all of us non-golfers can now feel enlightened about the Solheim Cup!

** The FM Solheim Cup Tournament ended this year in a tie between our American Team led by Captain Rob Hirzl and our European Team led by Captain Dan O’Malley. The rules say that in a tie there will be a one-hole playoff between the two captains. Our tournament playoff resulted in a win for the European Team. Congratulations to team members and Captain Dan O’Malley.

MAKE YOUR GARDEN SHINE IN AUTUMNby Joan Baker

Fiery orange maples, golden oaks, and richly colored fall mums are the much-loved darlings of autumn, but oh so fleeting. However, you need not retreat indoors yet. Consider planting ornamental grasses for a late season display which will prove to be just as striking in their own subtle way and definitely last much longer. Grasses are not affected by frost, the loose arching foliage adds an element of movement, and when the cold winds howl, they vibrate with each gust of wind.

Being drought tolerant, disease resistant and not attractive to deer, following are four suggestions that will not grow too tall in our limited space. Always refer to the tag to be sure of the height projections.Fountain grass (pennisetumalopecuroides) 2 to 3 feet tall, full sun. Airy clumps give rise in summer to bottle-brush plumes.Dwarf Bamboo (pleiobastus variegatus) 1 to 3 feet tall, full to part shade. This plant will spread

rather than grow tall. Plant in a spot where it will be easy to keep in control.Flame grass (miscanthus sinensis purpurascens) 3 to 4 feet tall, full sun. Feathery plumes complement orange-red fall foliage.Black mondo grass (Ophiopogon planiscapusnigrescens) 6 to 8 inches tall, full to part sun. This front-of-the-border plant contrasts with nearly any color in your perennial bed.

In winter after the clumps turn golden brown, the landscape still looks interesting. Even with a heavy snowfall, they can bear the weight and just pop back up again and again. Cut them back in early spring just before the new foliage appears and the cycle starts anew thanks to Mother Nature.

“Autumn tones shine on the treesAnd October days are growing shortNow the garden’s bright with leaves

In the fading sunlight caught.”~David Squire

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, JOAN!

THE COMMANDMENTS OF GROWING OLDER

1. Talk to yourself, because there are times you need expert advice.

2. Consider “in style “ to be the clothes that still fit. 3. You don’t need anger management. You just need people

to stop pissing you off. 4. Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for

idiots that needs work. 5. The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write

that down. I’ll remember it.”6. Remember: you have days when your life is just a tent

away from a circus.7. These days, “on time” is when you get there.8. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid, but it sure does muffle

the sound.

9. It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller.

10. Lately, you’ve noticed that people your age are so much older than you.

11. “Getting lucky” now means walking into a room and remembering why you’re there.

12. When you were a child, you thought nap time was a punishment. Now it feels like a mini-vacation.

13. Some days you have no idea what you’re doing out of bed.

14. Age has sure slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up.15. You still haven’t learned to act your age, and hope you

never will.

THOUGHTSBy Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Submitted by Jacqueline Leonard

I love the Autumn, And yet I cannot sayAll the thoughts and thingsThat make me feel this way.

I love walking on the angry shore,To watch the angry sea;Where summer people were before,But now there’s only me.

I love wood fires at nightThat have a ruddy glow.I stare at the flamesAnd think of long ago.

Nostalgia—that’s the Autumn,Dreaming through SeptemberJust a million lovely thingsI always will remember.

BIRDING WITH ROBINBy Robin Verhose

Ever since my mother departed this earth in 1971, we always called the fall season ‘Blue Jay Weather.’ My sister and I just know Mom is around when we see and hear these bold, bossy, boisterous birds! Yes

indeed, there is a similarity! The birds are slowly moving south. My neighbor and I

saw a few dull Robins around, as well as one or two stray Grackles. Another bird that warms my heart is the Nuthatch, which climbs up and down the tree branches making a faint peent sound (hard to describe here).

On another walk I heard a small voice I thought might be a Kinglet, but then again it could be a LGB=little green bird, aka, Warbler. With the change in the weather Labor Day weekend, these birds too are moving south from their nesting days in Maine or Canada. So, I decided to do some pishing. It didn’t work! Either the bird was too smart to fall for some odd sounds emanating from this human or I am rusty at my pishing skills. Now what exactly is pishing? It is a technique birders use to bring the bird closer hopefully for identification! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t! Google it, there are actually some very good examples and demonstrations.

That’s all for this month. Keep on birding!

MISINFORMATION VS DISINFORMATIONby Geoff Blake

Misinformation is false information that is spread, regardless of intent to mislead. Disinformation is deliberately misleading or biased information; manipulated narrative or facts.

The definitions are vastly different for two such similar words. Let me give you a very benign example of the difference between the two words. Let’s pretend you were invited to a party that starts at 8 PM. You run into a friend at the store and the friend asks you what time the party starts. For the moment you forget and mistakenly say, “ I think 9 PM.” That is misinformation. However, let’s now pretend you run into a person that you can’t stand to be around, who is also invited to the same party. He or she asks you what time the party starts and you say, “I think 9 PM,” deliberately so that he or she will come late and maybe be embarrassed. That is disinformation. Your intent for the friend wasn’t nefarious at all. You just gave misinformation. Your intent for your nemesis was purposeful, therefore, you spread disinformation.

Today, misinformation can spread very quickly because of 24 hour news cycles and social media. Companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter are constantly being questioned about their roles in the spread of misinformation and disinformation. How can they curtail such information without violating the free speech of their users? Moreover, how can we distinguish between “mis” and “dis” information? It has become much more of a problem since the COVID 19 pandemic has stuck our country and the world. Many are calling the information crisis an infodemic.

Journalists find themselves in a difficult position when investigating information from politicians who might say something that is obviously not true. Journalists don’t want to accuse anyone of being a liar or spreading disinformation. It is hard to be 100% certain of the intent behind the information. The journalists and all writers can be sued for libel concerning intent of the information.

We are always correct in our beliefs, aren’t we? We listen to our favorite news program or our favorite commentators or our favorite politicians. We would NEVER get false or misleading information from any of those good people, would we? I guess we all have to answer that question for ourselves. Politically, we should probably listen to more than one channel or read more than one excerpt online to decide what facts we should or should not believe. That would probably be a smart thing for us all to do.

As far as the COVID 19 pandemic goes, there is certainly “mis” and “dis” information that has spread like wildfire. Thus we must always consider what and whom should we believe? Once again, let’s use our brains and become well-informed so that we can get and understand the correct information that will help to keep us all safe and sound!

**By the way, it took me 12 DAYS to get my COVID test results—-both negative. I was glad to learn that results are obtained much faster now.

BOOMER 103by Jerry Fitzpatrick

Useless statistic of the year: biggest age difference between a Yankee pitcher and catcher in the second game of a doubleheader since a game against the Senators in 1952.

Definition of epic: noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements is narrated in elevated style. One cannot have an epic Labor Day car sale. One cannot have an epic concluding episode of an HBO special or a epic story of romance. You cannot compare an alleged epic sale of Toyotas to the Iliad or Odyssey. This is an egregious marketing technique of the advertising media, which should not be permitted. Am I not a purist?

I noticed a new commercial for Apoquel, which is a drug for puppy dogs, but interestingly the dog in the commercial has taken on human proportions and speaks rather eloquently. I take umbrage with this because all Boomers realize that animals cannot speak with the memorable exceptions of Mr. Ed and Francis the Mule. Remember.

My last reflection takes me back exactly four years ago to 2016. I think most of the Mewsers realize that I am a vociferous Democrat, even a big-mouth one. In that October of 2016, I was coasting along in the euphoria of all the polls showing Hillary with a commanding lead. In the last two weeks of the campaign, I was cock sure of the ascendancy of Ms. Clinton. My hubris knew no bounds. At the last two men’s golf Tuesdays of that month, I soared to new heights and announced that I would accept all bets on the election, giving 2 to 1 odds on the favorite, Hillary. I still thank God that no one took me up on the bets. If a number of my fellow golfers had called my bluff, I would just now be exiting debtor’s prison and the condemnation of Lovey, my wife Liz.

AN OUT OF MIND EXPERIENCEby Retiree Joe Fichter

Last month I was hospitalized for an endoscopic procedure for a swallowing disorder. The purpose of the procedure was to enlarge my esophagus so that the food I ingest could more easily get to my stomach.

The night before the procedure, I did not sleep. I was frightened because it is a fairly new procedure. I was afraid of infection and other problems that might come up during the procedure—whether real or imagined—like the surgeon getting a bug in his eye and who knows what else. Despite my fear beforehand, the operation went smoothly and the pain that the surgeon had promised was minimal.

After two hours in the recovery room following the procedure, I was admitted for what was supposed to be just one night of observation. What happened next was the downside of the operation. It seems I reacted poorly to the anesthesia. I went into a special spiral of craziness known as post-operative delirium. I thought the nurses were squatters and didn’t belong in the hospital. I didn’t believe that they were qualified to care for me. I threatened to call the police; and in fact I did, three times. I dialed 911 for help. The desk sergeant said he would send a SWAT team over to my room to restore order. I even ran to the window to watch the police cars arrive. However, they never arrived to my room. It turns out the hospital has their own security force. Three big men in uniforms found me in the elevator trying to escape and escorted me back to my room where the nurses put me in restraints.

For about six hours I remained tied down and most uncomfortable. Somehow I finally figured out that I needed to lower my voice and pretend to be calm before they would believe me and untie me.

By the morning of the third day, after two nights in the hospital, the doctor thought I was well enough to be discharged. My fog from the anesthesia had lifted enough for me to go home.

I don’t ever want to experience anything like that again. It was scary and I felt out of control. I didn’t know to expect it, nor did I know then what I know now—that post-operative delirium is not uncommon particularly in patients over 80 years old.

Thank God the hospital staff was experienced; I certainly gave the nurses and three security guards plenty of trouble.

Call Your Daughter Home By Deb Spera

Review by Claire Harty

Years before the Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression, the South was already in a depression. In the early 1920s the Boll Weevil had decimated its economic bloodline – cotton. People lost their farms, and many died from disease and malnutrition. Set in 1924 segregated Branchville, South Carolina, this novel revolves around three women: Annie, Retta and Gertrude.

Annie Coles is a white woman who lives with her husband and two grown sons on a plantation on the outskirts of town. The couple had five children but one son committed suicide when he was just twelve, and their two daughters live hours away in Charleston. Annie and Edwin have not seen or heard from the girls in fifteen years. Like everyone else the Coles have suffered financially, but Annie’s Sewing Circle business has provided the seed money to start a tobacco crop to replace the lost cotton. The plantation has been owned by the Coles Family for generations, and Edwin Coles will do anything to save it.

Retta Owens is a black woman who lives with her husband Odell in Shake Rag, the colored section of Branchville. They are a loving, devoted couple despite the tragedies that have befallen them. Their only child, Esther, died of fever at age eight, and Odell lost part of one leg in a fire while shoveling coal into the steam engine when he worked for the railroad. Retta’s mother was a slave on the Coles Plantation, and after slaves were freed, she continued working as the kitchen maid for the Coles. When her mother grew old and infirm, Retta took over her job.

Gertrude Pardee is a dirt-poor white woman living with her drunken, abusive husband, Alvin, and their two younger daughters in a ramshackle hovel deep in the swamp miles from Branchville. To escape their father’s beatings and the threat of swamp fever from malnutrition, Gertrude has sent her older daughters to live with her brother and sister-in-law in town. Now Gertrude is desperate to save her younger girls.

This book is told in rotating chapters narrated by each of the women, and their voices come through loud and clear. It is a beautifully-written novel, drawing the reader fully into the segregated culture of the south and the heart-wrenching situations these women endure. As the book progresses, the lives of the three women intertwine, and their strength and goodness overcome their long held biases. These women will remain with the reader long after the last page is read.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THECOVID-19 SITUATION

1. Can we uninstall 2020 and reinstall it again? I think it has a virus!

2. Just asked a 6 year-old if he understands why there is no school. He said yes because they ran out of toilet paper.

3. On the bright side, I am no longer calling this shelter-in-place. I am an artist-in-residence.

4. After years of wanting to thoroughly clean my house but lacking the time, this week I discovered that wasn’t the reason.

5. If you believe that all of this will end and we will get back to normal once we reopen everything, raise your hand. Now slap yourself with it!

6. Wearing a mask inside your home is now highly recom-mended. Not so much to prevent COVID but to stop eating.

7. This cleaning with alcohol is total BS. Nothing gets done after that first bottle.

8. Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or do we just keep washing our hands?

9. Whoever owes you money, go to their house now. They should be home.

10. I’m stuck between a rock and someone I would like to hit with it.

11. It’s been a great blessing to be home with the wife these past few months. We’ve caught up on everything I’ve done wrong for the past 20 years!

12. So let me get this straight, there’s no cure for a virus that can be killed with sanitizer and hand soap.

13. How long does this social distancing have to last? My husband keeps trying to get back in the house.

14. Just wait a second, so you’re telling me that my chance of surviving this depends on the common sense of oth-ers???

15. When this virus is over I still want some of you to stay away from me!
