VFW Post 2224
It is my sincere hope that all of you had the
most joyous Christmas Season and a very Happy
New Year. We have much to be thankful for and
I’m sure your thoughts and prayers as well as mine
were with our veterans serving away from home.
We look forward to a great 2020 with many
new and great improvements to our Post. The
lighting is finished due to the hard work of Jeff
Byrd and Tom Repass so we should see a sizable
reimbursement soon that will go to our kitchen
upgrade which is moving along as expected.
Our Post and Auxiliary were able to assist with
the Christmas Party on December 15th at the
Puyallup Armory for our adoptive unit (A-Troop
Auxiliary News: Dona Knox, Auxiliary President
VFW Post 2224
Dear Auxiliary Members: I trust you had a
fabulous holiday season with friends and family.
Wow – 2020 here we are! I don’t know what it
is about saying the year 2020, but it sounds like it
should be a song. LOL. I trust it will be a good
year for our Auxiliary. With that in mind, I would
love to hear of any ideas you might think of to try
and do for both the Post and Auxiliary to make our
VFW Post 2224 fun and exciting. NO IDEA IS A
BAD IDEA! Let’s try and make it a fun place to
come to.
We have a couple of Trustee changes. New 1-
year Trustee is Sallie Addington. New 2-year
Trustee is Robin Sheffer. I would love it if
everyone thanks them for stepping up to finish the
year out. Thank you Sallie and Robin for
volunteering your time. It is deeply appreciated.
Speaking of volunteers, the Auxiliary would
absolutely love it if you could donate a little of
your time to help cook meals. This is a huge $
maker for the Auxiliary and is so much fun
working together. We always have the same few
people volunteering their time to help, but being
honest with you, we sure could use some
additional help. We need six people – three on
each crew. One crew to prepare one meal per
month, and the other crew to prepare one Sunday

Our Vision: Ensure that veterans are respected for their service,
always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their
loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.
Through our National Programs, we assist the VFW pass or block
legislation that impacts veterans and their families, provide nearly a million
volunteer hours in the VA medical system, conduct patriotic programs with thousands of students and offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth.

303rd CAV) with the generous donation of a 9-
foot Christmas tree from Robin and Mike Sheffer
as well as decorations and gift baskets put
together by our Auxiliary Jr. Vice Karen
Woodward made the party a success.
We had a great turnout again this year at the
annual Auburn Veterans Day Parade. The rain
cooperated and stopped just as the parade began!
I want to thank Larry Heires and Jack Taylor for
making sure all of our Veterans Day activities are
memorable, do justice for those who served, and
are more successful every year.
Another great turnout for our Annual
Community Thanksgiving free meal for the
community. It was an amazing sight – 13 roasters
cooking turkeys in all corners of the Post. The
smells were wonderful! Thanks to so many
amazing volunteers who showed up to pull this
off. Thanks especially to Milo and his crew for
all of their expert planning and execution. What a
day!
Our Post and Auxiliary deserve much credit
and our thanks for organizing a wonderful
children’s Christmas Party. Everyone enjoyed the
games, food, gifts, and of course, Santa Claus!
As of this printing, we are planning a great
New Years Eve Party with great food and Frank
Sinatra impersonator. There will also be a
fundraiser for the kitchen upgrade!
A big shout out to Jack Taylor for his endless
work finally coming to fruition with the
dedication of the SSG Shurer Monument on
Friday, December 6th at Rogers High School. I
also want to thank the members of the Post who
helped put together the Shurer appreciation dinner
at the Post after the ceremony. It ended the day
nothing short of spectacular.
Watch for the Bingo and Trivia nights – a great
time to get together at the Post!
Please be safe during the winter months. I
wish you all the best in the coming year.

breakfast per month. The meal crews have a lot of autonomy in choosing meals to prepare, cooking versus
serving and you get immediate feedback from the customers! It really is a great feeling of accomplishment
to serve a delicious meal to a hungry customer while helping the Post and Auxiliary thrive and accomplish
more. If you have any questions, contact me or one of the other kitchen crew members. If you have an
inkling to do something like this, talk to a few of your friends and develop your own crew. Give it some
thought, we’d love to have you help us.
I am going to close this novel now. Holidays are over so take some time to relax a little (but not too
much—need you in the kitchen :) Watch for postings of coming events, and bring us your ideas too! Take
care everyone.

The lighting upgrade to LED lights throughout the Post is completed. Paperwork was turned in for our
rebate, and we should receive the rebate sometime over the next several weeks.
On another note, only people with current Washington State Food Handlers Cards are authorized to be in
the kitchen. This is important to minimize the chances for food borne illneeses in our kitchen which could
be transferred to our Post members. And, if you are authorized to be in the kitchen, please clean up and
sanitize after using the kitchen. The worst thing for a meal prep crew is to begin by cleaning up someones
mess. Thank you!
