Easter Egg HuntJulie McCall and Erin Irby are helping out the Easter bunny, collecting treat-filled plastic Easter eggs for this year’s Easter Egg Hunt, held on Easter Sunday, April  5, immediately following the 9:00 service, where the children will open our celebration with flowering of the cross.

Particularly if you think you might have a child or grandchild participate, please consider donating to the Easter Bunny’s basket!

A collection box will be in the Parish Hall Parlor through Palm Sunday, March 29. The Easter Bunny needs any color plastic eggs and small trinkets (stickers, bouncy balls, erasers), or individually wrapped candy for filling the eggs.

If you would like to help, or if you have questions, please email Julie McCall at [email protected].

A Centering Prayer workshop serves both as an introduction to Centering Prayer for those who know nothing of this practice, and a refresher course for those who have been praying this way for some time. Four conferences give shape to the day: Prayer as Relationship, the Method of Centering Prayer, the Place of “Thoughts” in Centering Prayer, and Centering Prayer and the Fruits of the Spirit. The workshop is scheduled on Saturday, March 21, 2015 and runs from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with appropriate breaks and an hour for lunch. Two sessions of Centering Prayer are part of the design.

The design also calls for six follow-up sessions on DVD with Thomas Keating presenting. Participants may first come to the Saturday workshop alone and discern later whether the follow-up sessions seem right to them.

Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of Contemplative Prayer. And Contemplative Prayer is a pure gift of God: the opening of our mind and heart -- our whole being -- to God, the Ultimate Mystery beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. Many of us associate prayer with thoughts or feelings expressed in words. This is but one mode.

Based on the wisdom saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Centering Prayer encourages us to “go into our inner room, close the door, and pray to our Father in secret.” What is the reward? Intimacy with God. (Matthew 6:6) For many centuries now, this way of praying has been housed in monasteries and convents, but in our day the Spirit is encouraging a great many to go into the inner room and pray in secret.

A Centering Prayer Workshop is a good way to begin.

The fee for the full-day workshop is $30, but do not let the cost of the workshop prevent you from attending. Please contact Prior John Pitzer to discuss scholarships or other support. To reserve your spot, please register online, here. Payment can be made online, or by mail/in person.

The Rev. Tom Ward has been an Episcopal priest for over thirty years, serving parishes in Mississippi and Tennessee; from 1994 through 2005, he was University Chaplain at Sewanee, the University of the South (the one university owned and operated by The Episcopal Church). Tom now focuses on the contemplative dimension of the gospel, teaching centering prayer and leading retreats. He has a special interest in fostering this practice in local congregations in general, and in Episcopal parishes, in particular. For the past fifteen years, Tom has worked closely with Thomas Keating and Contemplative Outreach Ltd, a network which seeks to foster contemplation.

CSF Pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany: September 14-26, 2015Led by Reverend Marcus Losack

Join us on a journey back in time to visit places made sacred with the worship and ministry of St. Patrick and the early Celtic saints. On the first part of our pilgrimage, we’ll visit the famous high crosses at Monasterboice, say prayers in churches founded by St. Patrick in Downpatrick and Armagh, and walk the ancient historic sites at the Hill of Slane, the Hill of Tara, Navan Fort, and Newgrange.

The second half of our pilgrimage takes us by overnight ferry to Brittany, where we will visit the place that local tradition holds is the site of St. Patrick’s childhood home. In addition, we’ll visit Mont St. Michel, several churches and abbeys with historic connections to St. Patrick and St. Columbanus, and other sites of religious and historic significance.

Our pilgrimage leader, Marcus Losack, has done extensive research on St. Patrick and has published several books supporting the tradition that the patron saint of Ireland was kidnapped from his home in Brittany, not Britain. Losack is an Anglican priest, teacher, and author with over twenty years experience as a pilgrimage leader.

Each day we will gather for reflection and prayers, share meals, and build friendships and memories as we follow the path of these early Celtic saints.

This pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany is limited to 20 registrants, so register soon. Several from our 2014 pilgrimage to Ireland have already signed up for the 2015 pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany.

For a detailed pilgrimage itinerary, click here. For the pilgrimage registration form, click here.

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.

The MESSENGER is the monthly magazine of St. James Episcopal Church, containing extended news of parish programs and events.

Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, reference materials, and more at www.stjamesbr.org.

If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick up a paper copy at church and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!

Lenten Retreat for Busy WomenSaturday, March 7, 9:00 - 3:00

The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation are hosting a one-day retreat at the Solomon Episcopal Conference Center in Robert. The retreat will be directed by the Rev. Dr. Mitzi Minor, Professor of New Testament at the Memphis Theological Seminary. Her retreat focus is Our Grandmothers Have Something to Say: Spending Time with New Testament Women.

The cost for the retreat is $35, including lunch at the Center. Register with your check payable to St. James with “CSF Retreat” in the memo line, or online here. Please do not let the cost of the retreat prevent you from attending, but contact Prior John Pitzer for information about scholarships.

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Conference Center for participants who would prefer to arrive on the Friday evening before the retreat; this would not include dinner at the Center. Rooms are on a first-come, first-serve basis with payment to secure your reservation, online, or via check.

We are reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman and meeting Monday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the private room La Madeleine’s on Jefferson Hwy. Don’t forget to bring a sweater! R.s.v.p. to Monica Murphy at [email protected], or 225-335-3572.
