    THE MESSAGE OF ISLAM

All Praise is due to Allah, We praise Him and we seek

help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We

repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our

own evils and our own bad deeds. Anyone who is

guided by Allah, he is indeed guided; and anyone who

has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. I

bear witness that there is no god but Allah, the OnlyOne without any partner; and I bear witness that

Muhammad, is His servant, and His messenger.

O You who believe, Fear Allah, as He should be

feared, and die not except as Muslims. O You who

believe, be aware of Allah, and speak a

straightforward word. He will forgive your sins and

repair your deeds. And whoever takes Allah and His

Prophet as a guide, has already achieved a mighty

    victory.

    Actions are judged by intentions

Dear brothers and sisters, in this message I'll talk

about something that is very important in our daily

lives, and that is a (niyyah) or intention.

It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, Abu

Hafs Umar al-Hattab, who said; I heard the Messenger

of Allah (pbuh) said; ''The deeds are considered by the

intentions, and a person will get the reward

according to his intention. So whoever emigrated for

Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for

Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for

worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his

emigration would be for what he emigrated for''. (Al-

    Buhari and Muslim).

Background; according to some hadiths, the reason for

this hadith is that a person sent a proposal of marriage

to a woman named Umm Qais which she turned

down saying that he should have to emigrate to al-

Medina for it. Accordingly, he did it for this specific

purpose, and the two were married there. On account

of this event, the man came to be known among the

companions as muhajir Umm Qais. On the basis of this

hadith, ulama are of the unanimous opinion that the

real basis of ones actions is niyyah (intention) and

everyone will be requited according to his niyyah

(intention). It is true that niyyah is founded in ones

heart, that is to say, one has first to make up ones mind

for what he intends to do. The point which becomes

evident from this hadith is that ikhlas sincerity is a

must for every action. In other words, in every righteous

    deed, one should seek only the pleasure of Allah;

otherwise, it will not be accepted by Allah.

It is considered to be one of the greatest hadith in

    Islam

Al-Imam al-Shafie said; this hadith is one third of the

knowledge of Islam, related to about 70 topics of fiqh.

Al-Imam Ahmad said; Islam is based on three

    undamentals (all are among the 40 hadith). Hadith;

which is stated above, narrated by Umar Ibn Khattab.

Hadith; narrate by Aisha; whosoever introduces into

this affairs of ours (Islam) something that does not

belong to it, it is to be rejected. Hadith; narrated by

Numan Ibn Basheer; truly, what is lawful is evident,

and what is unlawful is evident, and in between thetwo are matters which are doubtful which many

people do not know. These three hadiths are agreed

    upon by Bukhari and Muslim.

These hadiths can be seen as three criteria to help

Muslims evaluate and judge what they do and say as

ibadah in their daily life; to evaluate and judge our

internal actions (actions of the heart), to evaluate and

udge our external actions (actions of the limbs), to

evaluate and judge our dealings muamalaat,

    (interaction between people).

This hadith emphasizes ikhlas (sincerity- to be truthful

and honest to Allah alone, performing an act solely for

Allahs sake whereby no other witness except Allah is

sought). Ikhlas is one of the conditions of accepting

    good deeds.

    Ways to obtain ikhlas (sincerity)

    - Do righteous deeds, the more good deeds we do and

hence get closer to Allah, the more sincere we will be.

    - Before we do any deed we should firstly seek

knowledge (ilm) our actions/deeds should be guided by

knowledge so that we do them in accordance to the

    sharia.

Do not give false impressions; do not make others

believe that an action we did was good when it was not.Al-Imam Ahmad said: before you do anything, check

your intentions (niyyah) ask yourself before performing

an action; is itfor the sake of Allah?.

Ibn Qayyim says; any action we do is subject to three

defects; first; being conscious that others are observing

our action, second; seeking a return (benefit/reward) for

the action, and third; being satisfied with the action.

From this above saying we can understand the

importance of sincerity in our daily life. Because

everything and every action we do, we should do it for

the sake of Allah, otherwise our actions will be dust. And

on the Judgment Day we will not have from these action

any reward from Allah, so I can tell you just as Imam

Ahmad said: before you do anything, check your

intentions (niyyah) ask yourself before performing an

action; is itfor the sake of Allah?.
