IT'S FOR YOU jjSince the newly-organized Student Council is now active many

students1 have asked for a re-statement of i ts purpose andfunctions. Fi rst of al l , the S tudent Council is a rep rese ntativ e c ente rfor the co-oper ation of all college activities a* clea ring h ouse foryour ideas and problems, not only those of i ts members. Any girlor group of gir ls may present plans or programs which they thinkwould benefit the schoolas ^a whole.

Council Representatives are chosen from college organizations,ra ther than on the a rb i t ra ry bas i s o f c lasses , thus assur ing leadership and a unified school spiri t . To keep you informed, the Student Council wil l publicize i ts activit ies through class and clubme etings, bulletins, and Merciad new s i tem s.

Our S tudent C ouncil is the d irective force w hich! keeps th ein tegra l par t s o f Mercyhurs t t i ck ing toge ther, he lp ing one another, working for your college;and for you. Through the Council, thevarious clubs and organizations can, through their individual activit ies, co-operate on definite m easures to imp rovestudent!lifeand solve studentproblemsto make college more profi table andenjoyable for all of us.

    HOW A R B TOCI G R O W I N G ?In al l ourj j l ives, not a single day passes but that a certain

growth takes place ineachfof us. We grow unrealizingly, forexample, in ei ther tolerance or intolerance; and you must admit

that the atmosphere at Mercyhurst does not incourage intolerance. We grow in knowledge and wisdom, the individual extent of whichdepends largely upon ourselves. If this seems incredible, just try^o t to learn; i t won' t work. Obviously, too, there is l i t t le sat isfaction in acquiring a tale nt for not acq uiring! any talen t .{[

Wejgrow every day int h e ! abil i ty to understand the thingsthat are growing within us, with the occasional , unique experienceof feeling realization or of solving some complex problem. Wisdomdawns in our l ives asthe*dawn comes to each new day. The day'sdawning is inevitable; we cannot stop i t , al though we can closeour eyes to the sun. So i t is with the dawn of wisdom. Only byclosing the eyes of our mind can we blot out i ts ever-present l ight .Growth, l ike the l ight of day, is unlimited; and our share, whenlost by the closing of our eyes, can never be acquired again.

SLOWING U PDo many of us feel the need of an Inspirat ion Bureau? We

idle away precious minutes, talk about our lack of sleep, or thinkabout that book we mean to read in our leisure t ime. From all thiswe do not f ind the needed ideas.

Jus t wh ere would be a place to go for inspirat ion? Let 's arr ang ean appointment with Aristotle and Plato. When we find ourselvesface to face with them, wemust*not let our eyes drif t along theti t les as we think, "Oh! theseareltoo dry; we wouldn' t be interested." Be adventurous, takethemtdown from the shelf, and givethem a fair tr ial . |

Before we are aware, many books will be tapping their f ingerson our shoulders with the friendly invitation,"Come r e a d w h a t w ehave to say." Before long, their constructive ideas will be holdingaisle seats in our mental world. They will serve as a kind of wellspring upon which we can draw when our mental pumps needpriming for ideas.| Now, i t is entirely up to us not to bury our heads in the sandsof illusion^and think that ideas will come to us while we wait forthem. We cannot ge t any place w thout taking those f irst courageouss teps . Why not wake up now, instead of twenty years later l ike

Rip Van Winkle? Off to a raid on the shelves of the library stack-room !

A college paper deserves andneeds the best in the way ofstudent opinion* So let's haveyour suggestions, comments andcri t icisms. Have you any ideasfor new features or addit ionsto those already in THE MERCIAD? By all means, tel l anymember of thestaff. Are youenthusiast ic or peeved about

something? Then write a let terto the editor. Is there a matterwhich you think should be discussed in the school? An art icleon the subject would be welcome. We're anxious to knowwhat features of THE MERCIAD you like best and which youthink could be improved. It 'syour paper. Let 's hear fromyou.
