BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col-collections/lewis-mel
Mel Lewis (May 10, 1929-February 2, 1990) was born Melvin Sokoloff in Buffalo, New York, to
Russian immigrant parents. His father was a drummer in the Buffalo area who inspired his son to follow
in his footsteps from an early age. Still in his mid teens, Lewis played with nationally known jazz
musicians Harold Austin and Lenny Lewis. Early credits also include stints with Bernie Burns (1946),
Boyd Raeburn (1948), Alvino Rey (1948-9), Ray Anthony (1949-50, 1953-54), and Tex Beneke (1950-
53). In 1954 he joined Stan Kenton's band, playing alongside such musicians as Jimmy Giuffre, Maynard
Ferguson, Laurindo Almeida, Vido Musso, and vocalist June Christy. During his three-year tenure with Kenton, Lewis also worked and recorded with the Frank Rosolino quintet and the Hampton Hawes Trio.
In 1957, Lewis settled in Los Angeles where he led a quintet with another ex-Kenton sideman,
saxophonist Bill Holman. He worked with the big bands of Gerald Wilson and Terry Gibbs, recording with
the latter between 1959-62. The early 1960s saw Lewis in New York with the Gerry Mulligan Concert
Jazz Band, in Europe with Dizzy Gillespie, and in Russia with Benny Goodman. Lewis moved to New York
in 1963 and formed a big band with trumpeter Thad Jones two years later. The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis
Orchestra performed and recorded extensively, garnering rave reviews and awards. Their performance on the album Live in Munich earned them a Grammy Award in 1979.
After twelve productive years, Jones left for Europe and Lewis assumed sole leadership of the
band. With the departure of Jones, Kansas City-born trombonist/pianist/arranger Bob Brookmeyer
assisted in the musical direction of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Lewis established a residency at the
prestigious Village Vanguard that spanned over two decades, where he performed up until one month
prior to his death in 1990. The orchestra continued to tour and record albums, as well as to perform every Monday night at the Village Vanguard under the moniker, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Lewis, best known for his small group approach to big band drumming, was one of the first
drummers to vary the ride cymbal beat, giving the music a loose and swinging feel. His commanding
presence never dominated the spotlight and always stressed the interplay between the band members.
Marr Sound Archives Miller Nichols Library
University of Missouri, Kansas City "How much you stick in depends on how much you can hear," Lewis explained during a 1989 radio
broadcast on the history of jazz drumming, "and if you're really hearing, you'll put in only what's
necessary." This multi-part broadcast for New York's 89.9 FM WKCR may be listened to in the Marr Sound Archives upon request.
Mel Lewis was the recipient of numerous awards, including fourteen Grammy nominations from
the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Lewis authored It's Time for the Big Band
Drummer (Kendor Music Co, 1978), a drumming method book, and taught workshops on jazz drumming
at William Patterson State College in New Jersey.

Dear Mr. Lewis, I’m a singer and have been living in Europe since 1975. I’ve
been singing jazz there for about 4 years, mostly with small groups, but
occasionally as a soloist with big bands. Enclosed is a cassette with a few live
big band numbers and some selections from my last LP (released in Europe in
July ’82) “The Dancer” with Dennis Luxion on piano, Rudi Schroeder on
bass, Clarence Becton on drums and Wilson de Oliveira on saxes and flute.;
There are two reasons that I’m writing to you. First of all, I’ve heard your
band in concert (in Frankfurt, Germany) several times and have much respect
for your music. If there were any possibility to work with the band
(particularly live), I would be terrificly [sic] interested (and grateful for the
experience).; Secondly, all of my work up until now has been in Europe, and
since I’m planning to return to the States in November to live, I’m also now
looking for a booking agent to help me plan some work for the fall and
winter. The few musicians I do know in the States are all working steady
now (on the west coast doing studio work, in Woody Herman’s band, or in
ML.CAS.443
Marr Sound Archives Miller Nichols Library
University of Missouri, Kansas City
Atlantic City) and they have all recommended I get in touch with you. Would
you have any suggestions (or advice) for me?; Right now I’m in New Jersey
visiting my parents and will be staying until April 29th. If you have time, I
could come up to New York to meet with you. Are you still playing at the
Vanguard every Monday? Please let me know if you have any ideas. Many,
many thanks in advance. Yours truly, Rachel Gould
Rachel Gould – Info: Rachel Gould has come a long way on the European
jazz vocal scene since her arrival in Germany in the spring of 1975. She has
sung several times with the Erwin Lehn Big Band for Sueddeutsche
Rundfunk; she appeared on one of Bill Ramsey’s “Geheimtip” television
Dieter Reith; she guested with her own trio on Peter Horton’s “Café In Takt”
for Norddeutscher Rundfunk-TV; she sang for French Radio in Paris; she has
been guest soloist several times for AVRO Radio in Holland with the
Skymasters Big Band’s live “Swingtime” program; she toured Poland 3 times
appearing at the “Jazz On The Oder Festival,” recording for Polish radio and
participating in the “9th Meeting of Jazz Vocalists” in Lublin where she was
awarded a prize for her excellent vocalizing. She has had engagements in
clubs, concerts and festivals throughout Europe and recorded her first jazz LP
“All Blues” with trumpeter Chet Baker. Rachel has contributed vocalizing,
composing and lyrics to other artists’ recordings and her newest LP “The
Dancer” was released in May ’82 on the Trion Jazz Label.; Rachel’s musical
background began at the age of nine when she first studied cello. During her
high school days she sang on the coffee-house circuit in the Philadelphia area
with now-artist Perry Barton and did some back-up singing for Columbia
Records in New York. Her voice studies at Boston University School of Fine
and Applied Arts led to her singing in the Boston area with instructors from
the Berkeley School of Music as her backup musicians.; Since coming to
Germany she visited Darmstadt’s Jazz Wekstatt and Joe Viera’s jazz clinics at
Burghausen. Her assignments have taken her to Switzerland, France, Holland,
Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Poland and throughout Germany, working with
musicians such as trumpeters Charlie Green, Ack van Rooyan and Johannes
Faber, saxists Wilson de Oliveira and Ferdinand Poval, trombonist Lou
Blackburn, pianists Paul Grabowsky, Larry Porter and Jorg Reiter, guitarists
Juraj Galan and Werner Goos, bassists Gerd Myer-Mendez, Henk Haverhoek,
Gary Todd and Thomas Stabinow and drummers Allen Blairman and Frans
van Grinsven. Since August 1981 Rachel has been working steadily with
Dennis Luxion on piano, Rudi Schroeder on bass and Clarence Becton on
drums.; Rachel’s style and repertoire embrace a wide range of jazz singing,
from swing to Latin to bebop to ballads to blues to rock-jazz, including many
of her own compositions as well as jazz instrumental numbers with original
texts.; Some quotes from the media about Rachel Gould: The tall, attractive,
personable stylist adds a sensual warmth to a wide swinging range and seems
eager to please both audiences and musicians alike. (Joe Weisel, Stars and
Stripes jazz columnist); This is indisputably a jazz singer. The voice is rare,
smooth, colored, swinging, caressing. A delight (F.J., Le Monde de la
Musique)
