Hospira has products on almost everyhospital floor in North America. If a per-son enters a hospital, the chance of receiv-ing a drug or using a medication devicefrom the company is very likely.Hospira, the world’s leading provider of

injectable drugs and infusion technolo-gies, provides high-quality, lower-costgeneric medications. This focus ongeneric medications sets the companyapart as affordability allows more patientsto be treated. The company name is derived from the

words hospital, spirit, in-spire and theLatin word “spero,”which means hope. Its broad range ofproducts include spe-cialty injectables, biosimilars, medica-tion management

systems and infusiontherapy solutions and supplies. This mar-ket provided them with $4.1 billion insales last year. These products are sent to health care

facilities across the globe, including hospi-tals, alternate site facilities, home healthcare providers, and long-term care facili-ties.A new door was opened up for Hospira

with the Biologics Price Competition andInnovation Act, which is part of the Af-fordable Care Act of 2010. This created anabbreviated licensing pathway for biosim-ilars of U.S.-licensed reference products.A biosimilar is a lower-priced biologic

medicine that has been proven to be assafe and effective as a reference biologicdrug. They are used to treat patients withsome of the most widespread and diffi-cult-to-treat illnesses, such as cancer,

chronic kidney disease and autoimmunediseases.Biosimilars have been available in Eu-

rope and Australia for years. Hospira isthe only U.S.-based company with biosim-ilars in the European market.Since the act, United States regulators

and industry leaders are have been work-ing toward approving the country’s firstbiosimilar by the middle of the decade. This will create numerous opportunitiesfor both clinicians and patients. In addition to caring for patients, the

company also cares for the environment.Among many other recognitions, in 2012,Hospira was recognized in the top 100U.S. companies of Newsweek’s GreenRankings for the fourth year in a row. Thedata-driven assessment quantifies envi-ronmental footprints, policies and reputa-tions of the largest businesses in theworld.Although headquartered in Illinois,

there are 14 Hospira facilities across theglobe. McPherson is one of the six manu-facturing facilities in the United Statesand employs about 1,400 people.Hospira’s McPherson heritage dates

back to 1977. It was formerly owned andoperated by Sanofi. Abbott’s hospital

products business acquired the plant andproducts in 1997. Then it became part ofHospira in 2004 when the company wasspun off from Abbott and became a pub-licly traded, independent organization. The McPherson plant produces generic

injectable and biologic medicines usingadvanced manufacturing technology. Thisincludes lyophilization (freeze-drying),isolated filling lines and sterile fillingprocesses. They provide medications inmultiple delivery systems, including glassvials, ampoules, syringes and cartridges.McPherson’s contract manufacturing

department makes products for One 2One, Hospira’s pharmaceutical contractmanufacturing business. It also has a fullyintegrated research and development or-ganization supporting both Hospira andOne 2 One development and manufactur-ing.The local facility received a 2012 Busi-

ness Appreciation Month Award of Meritfrom the governor in recognition of Hos-pira’s outstanding contributions to thelocal community, the state economy andthe people of Kansas. Some information obtained from

Johns Manville’s McPhersonlocation celebrates 40 yearsBY NANCY YOUNGSpecial to the Sentinel

Johns Manville (JM) has been inbusiness for over 155 years. It became a wholly owned sub-sidiary of Berkshire Hathaway in2001 and its global headquarters islocated in Denver. The McPherson facility beganproduction in 1974 and is celebrat-ing its 40th year of business andservice to the McPherson commu-nity this year. The company’s direct economicimpact on the McPherson commu-nity is substantial, and it supportsthe McPherson communitythrough a wide variety of donationsand community activities. In 2007, the McPherson facilitybecame an Occupational Safetyand Health Administration Volun-tary Protection Program (OSHAVPP) Star worksite. It was the firstbuilding insulation manufacturerin the nation to be VPP Star certi-fied and the 19th VPP Star site inKansas. The plant received a VPPrecertification in 2010.The McPherson facility manufac-tures fiber glass building insulationwith R-values from R4.2 to R38

and serves markets that includecommercial, residential, retail, metal building, manufacturedhousing and flex glas.JMMcPherson’s service area in-cludes the central part of theUnited States and goes as far southas the Gulf of Mexico, north toCanada, west as the Rockies andeast to New Jersey.Recently, JM Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass building insula-tion transitioned to a bio-basedbinder, which was a new change forthe facility. A binder is the “glue”that holds together glass fibers andhelps products like batts and rollsretain their shape and perform-ance. The new bio-based binder in-cludes plant-based materials, which helps satisfy the increasingdemand for agriculturally sourcedproducts, while remaining compli-ant with the same industry specifi-cations.“Johns Manville has supportedthe families and businesses in theMcPherson and surrounding areasfor 40 years. We expect to continueour contributions to creating astrong McPherson in the future,”said Gregg Stockstill, JohnsManville Plant Manager.

The scope of the plastics industry is adaily part of life all across the globe. In the United States alone, the U.S. plas-

tics industry employs more than 900,000workers and creates $373 billion in an-nual shipments, according to the PlasticsIndustry Trade Association.Wear Technology of McPherson special-

izes in one facet of that industry.Broadly speaking, the company manu-

factures, rebuilds and coats screws andbarrels. They also rebuild gearboxes.“We’re one of the few rebuilders of these

types of screws in the country,” Jim

Reynolds, business managerand controller, said. “Veryfew people do this. Youcan count the number ofquality rebuilders in theU.S. on one hand. Andwe have a leading mar-ket position in that.”The screws Reynolds

refers to are one component of amachine—called an extruder—that makesplastic materials. Inside the extruder is abarrel. Inside the barrel are large screwsthat drive the plastic through it. The ma-jority of the end products are constructionmaterials, such as tabletops, doors, deck-ing, window trim and siding. In this way, Wear Technology isn’t an

original equipment manufacturer, butservices businesses who buy and usethem. This is called the aftermarket. When the screws aren’t operating the

way they should, replacement can becostly. Wear Technology is one of the fewplaces companies can call to rebuild themat a cheaper price.“The rebuild piece is very important to

our business,” Reynolds said. “It’s really adriver. It’s the niche that gets our foot inthe door and allows us to service the en-

tire aftermarket. The rebuilding allows usto get a foothold, and then they see all theother things we can do for them.”Their other services include coating

screws, rebuilding gearboxes (the partthat drives the screws) and manufacturingscrews.Wear Technology describes its coating as

hard, dense, tough and smooth. It also hasself-lubricating characteristics and makesa hard-bearing surface that extends wearlife.“We’re very well known for how we’ll fin-

ish and polish a screw,” Reynolds said. One category of screw they manufacture

is twin screws, which counter-rotatingscrews within thousandths of an inch ofeach other. Customer demands on thatare extremely precise. These screws are not the kind you’d put

in a wall to hang a picture. Some twinscrews are 20 feet long and 8.5 inches indiameter.Based on current trends, size will con-

tinue to increase. As this happens, outputwill exponentially increase.“That adds some complexity to what we

do, because the bigger they are, the heav-ier they are,” Reynolds said. “And theheavier they are, the bigger equipment I

have to have.”In order to predict the industry’s future

needs, the company is continuously talk-ing with customers and obtaining whatthey call the “voice of the customer.”While most of these customers are lo-

cated within the U.S., sales are increasingoverseas. Examples are Europe, Asia andthe Pacific Rim.“We’re actively seeking to grow our over-

seas market,” Reynolds said. “It’s growing. There’s a lot of economic development inplaces like Latin America and SouthAmerica. There’s lots of opportunitiesthere.”Reynolds attributes much of their suc-

cess to customer service.“We’ll out-service anybody,” he said. “Be-

cause at the end of the day, you’ve got totake care of the customer. That’s why Ifeel people call us back. We’re not perfect, and we may make mistakes on something, but we’ll absolutely stand behind it. Evento our own hurt. And that’s one thing peo-ple really appreciate about us.”In order to keep those customers happy,

Wear Technology employees about 110workers, many who must have specifictraining.

NCRA expands refiningcapacityBY NANCY YOUNGSpecial to the Sentinel

Since 1943, National Coopera-tive Refinery Association hasbeen a pillar of industry withinthe McPherson community. Cur-rently, NCRA is owned by threefarmer cooperatives. CHS Inc. ofSt. Paul, Minn., is now the ma-jority owner, holding 84 percentownership. As of Sept. 1, 2015,CHS Inc. will be the sole ownerof the refinery.NCRA manufactures gasoline,

diesel fuel and propane withproducts exported throughoutthe Midwest. NCRA employs700 employees.Last spring, an expansion made

up of several essential projectsbegan. Part of the expansion in-cludes increasing the refining ca-pacity of McPherson to 100,000

barrels per day from 85,000.Completion of this project willtake place in a series of phases.Jim Loving, NCRA president

commented on the new DelayedCoking Unit Project, one of theseveral essential projects in theexpansion play by saying, “In ad-dition to upgrading our technol-ogy, the new coker will allow therefinery to run a greater varietyof crude oils. This is the largestproject in NCRA’s history with atargeted completion of August2015.”

The Viega Group is in the businessof making everyday life more com-fortable. Although its products oftengo unseen, they are essential to keepbuildings running smoothly.Founded in 1899, The Viega Groupmanufactures and distributes plumb-ing, heating and cooling and pipejoining systems all over the world. InNorth American alone, Viega LLC of-fers more than 3,000 products. Thoseproducts are made from materials in-cluding copper, stainless, carbonsteel, Zero Lead bronze or high-per-

formance polymer. The privately ownedcompany is a pioneer inits industry, bestknown for innovativepress technology(joining) systems forindustrial, commer-cial and residential

projects. More than one mil-lion of its press fittings are installedevery day around the world. For example, Viega ProPress was theoriginal press fitting, introduced inthe United States in 1999. It providesa fast, secure method to join coppertube without (soldering) flame.Viega PEX (cross-linked plastic)Press fittings were the first press fit-tings for PEX tubing, which Viega in-troduced in 2000. This providedplastic options that had previouslybeen dominantly copper and stain-less. Because of its flexibility, PEXtubing is faster, easier to install andrequires less fittings. In 2012, Viega became the first tooffer Viega MegaPress for black ironpipe, which is a carbon steel press fit-ting suitable for both water and gas

applications. One tool, with an interchangeablejaw set, will install all three of theseproducts. All three of these products comewith the Viega Smart Connect fea-ture. Using water or air, it providesinstallers with a quick and easy wayto test and ensure it’s fittings are se-cure. This prevents damages and po-tential insurance claims, as itidentifies an insecure pipe before itbecomes a problem. It also signifi-cantly reduces installation time, be-cause systems do not have to be shutoff in the testing process. To keep current on innovation,Viega continues to communicate withcustomers. The company strives to bean educational partner in the indus-try to keep those customers informedand let them know what’s ahead.Viega LLC is headquartered in Wi-chita and employs around 500 peoplethroughout the U.S., Canada, Mexicoand Latin America. Those employeesexecute the company’s core processes, which include purchasing, manufac-turing, distribution and quality assur-ance.

The manufacturing facilities pro-duce all of the plastic products. Extru-sion (screws pushing raw plasticmaterial through machines) createsmillions of feet of tubing everymonth, and molding makes millionsof fittings to connect the tubing.Dozens of machines are required forthis production. There are five manufacturing anddistribution centers in the UnitedStates. The McPherson location, which covers the country’s central re-gion, opened in 2009.The McPherson facility manufac-tures PEX tubing, radiant panels,PEX Press fittings and many otherproducts. There are 155 employeeswho work there on three shifts. Manyof these employees are highly trainedengineers, technicians and inspectorswho have completed extensive train-ing.Some information obtained fromwww.viega.us

“Skilled labor is a challenge here,”Reynolds said, mentioning the county’slow population and low unemploymentrate as factors. “You have to broaden yourrecruiting base, and be competitive inwage, incentives and benefits.”But its location is also an advantage in

the overall plastics industry, due to itsproximity to an intersate highway, centralsite within the continental U.S., and thearea’s low electric costs. The area con-tains a lot of companies that are either di-rectly or indirectly affiliated with theplastics industry. There are no other branches of Wear

Technology, but there are sister compa-nies in Ohio, Canada and Mexico thatalso service the aftermarket. They are alloperated underneath Milacron PlasticsTechnologies, LLC, which specializes inthe plastics industry.Wear Technology began in the early

1980s and today is a leader the industry.Find out more at http://www.weartech-

New Canton Rail Terminal rises: Elevator will greatly increase grain storage for areaBY CARLA BARBERStaff Writer

CANTON — Mid Kansas Coopera-tive offered a tour recently of the slipconstruction of the Canton Rail Ter-minal, a grain shuttle loader facilitywith the potential to load 110-carunit trains in less than 12 hours.Once loaded, grain will be exportedto facilities in the Pacific Northwest,Gulf Coast and Mexico. The CantonRail Terminal is on Avenue 25, justnorth of U.S Highway 56 betweenGalva and Canton. The necessity for a new elevator de-veloped through two paths: currentand potential grain crop yield in-creases and the aging of available el-evators, whose facilities are or soonwill be requiring infrastructure im-provements. The new operation willboth increase storage (with a capa-

bility of 1.1 million bushels of cementstorage and more than two millionbushels of ground storage) andquickly move it where needed (withthe capacity to load rail cars up to80,000 bushels per hour). After multiple market studies bydifferent companies, it became ap-parent the U.S. 56 corridor east ofMcPherson was not only short onstorage space but had the potentialfor a facility that could access abroader market. This project is di-rectly in line with MKC’s vision ofproviding market relevance, currentassets and good service to its cus-tomers. The new facility will provide twoscales; state of the art automation;easy access and an easily maneuver-able traffic pattern for all truck sizes;three truck pits, two of which will ac-

commodatesemis; onerail pit; andthe ability toreceive upto 60,000bushels perhour, eliminating waiting timeto dump. It also offers ample roomfor multiple forms of future storage. Any customer can deliver grain. All major market grains will be ac-cepted. With the increase in soybeanand corn production, the new facilitywill be able to handle the slower dry-ing time that corn especially needsover wheat. Older elevators, builtwhen wheat was practically the solocrop, weren’t designed for the slowerdrying times. The facility is owned 50/50 byMKC and CHS, though MKC will

operate the facil-ity like a localMKC elevator andwill pay patronageat MKC rates.CHS was chosen

as a partner afteran extensive pool ofpossibilities because

both are cooperatives and thus sharea similar business model, both have aparallel vision, and CHS had priorrailway experience, which MKCsought. While the elevator will not be fullycompleted until early fall, groundstorage should be available this sum-mer.To learn more about MKC, visitwww.mkcoop.com.

The exterior of the new Canton Slip takes shape. The new facilitywill export grain to facilities in the Pacific Northwest, Gulf Coastand Mexico.
