Deborah GolDMan, chair“Guess Who’s Coming to Shabbas,” a program that partners congregants with one another for Shabbat dinners in their own homes, kicks off at Temple Beth El on Friday, November 6, 2015.

This program, which began in a suburban congregation outside Philadelphia, has two goals: To strengthen our synagogue community, and to help families build meaningful Jewish memories.

Our hope is to grow the program exponentially, with invited guests then serving as hosts in subsequent months, leading to 100% inclusion of our members by the end of a year. So don’t be shy! Let us know if you can host or attend a dinner.

I was reading a Jewish magazine recently and was amused by the number of ads that contained the phrase "life changing".

Send your children to Jewish camp. LIFECHANGING! Tour Poland and Israel with a renowned history professor. LIFECHANGING! Birthright Israel. LIFECHANGING! The reality of course is that life changing events can rarely be planned and in fact, can only be recognized years later with the benefit of hindsight.

When Lesley and I first moved to Rochester, we belonged to a synagogue that had Friday Night Children's services at 7:30 pm. Every Friday night, after finally settling in at home after a hectic week of work and running young children around, we would debate whether we had the energy to bundle our children up and head off to services. Whenever we did go, we returned home happy that we went; the warmth of the shul, the singing, the story telling, and praying together with friends was transformational. We entered shul frazzled young parents and somehow emerged with a sense of peace and community. And yet the next Friday, the debate would begin anew. Should we go or shouldn't we? Eventually, the weekly debate became just another obstacle and so after much discussion we decided that we would just go each week and stop discussing it. Twenty-five years later I understand that the decision we made back then to attend services every week was the defining, LIFECHANGING conversation of our adult lives. It has shaped how we raised our children, who our friends are, how we eat, and our entire outlook on life and the world we live in.

A few weeks ago over five hundred people attended our Centennial Purim festivities. Hundreds more will be attending our second night of Passover Seder. Each and every week Temple Beth El is filled with activities that can enrich your lives. Programs, however, are only part of the equation; it is our congregants and the caring community which develops from that which is our greatest asset. Temple Beth El can be LIFECHANGING, but it takes your commitment and participation to make that happen.

B'Shalom Dan Glowinsky, President

President's message

The Pursuit of HappinessDuring the weeks between Pesach and Shavuot, we follow a time –honored Jewish practice of studying Pirke Avot, the Ethics of the Fathers, works of wisdom about life and morality, offered by the Sages of old.

One of them, Ben Zoma, analyzed the qualities which comprise happiness. His definition speaks to modern people with as much cogency as it did to our forebears some two thousand years ago.

The first element that enters the equation is wealth. The Jewish Tradition is not naïve or unrealistic. Poverty is not a virtue. Poverty and happiness are not faithful companions. Millions of people in underprivileged countries around the world would define happiness as a loaf of bread, a bowl of rice, a roof over their heads or a secure employment.

The second in the series of Ben Zoma is power. No person can experience fulfillment if he/she has no influence over the lives of others, if her/his opinions are disregarded, his/her decisions rejected. The ability to exercise control over events is a capacity necessary for happiness.

The third goal was wisdom. This is a uniquely Jewish understanding of happiness. From the Jewish point of view, a person devoid of culture and knowledge can achieve gratifications of the senses, but he/she cannot know the fulfillment of the mind that is essential to human happiness.

And finally, Ben Zoma refers to honor. One who is the object of scorn and derision cannot be happy. We recognize the deep universal need to be respected, to win the deference of others, the approval of our group, the regard of our peers

I hope you are planning to be with us on Friday evening, May 13th, at 6:00, when we will present our third annual Friday Night Jazz. We are extremely fortunate in that Mr. Gap Mangione will, once again, be our featured artist and add his incredible musical talent to our service.

In preparation of this special Shabbat service and in case you missed this article I include it for you. It is from the Encyclopedia of Jewish Music.:

Jews & Jazz Music

At the turn of the last century, Jewish immigrants from Europe mixed in New York and Chicago with black immigrants from the Deep South. Soon they lent their own unique ingredient to America's greatest single musical innovation—jazz. Popular music was seen as a chance to escape from the ghettos.

Jazz probably originated in New Orleans in the late 19th century. Meanwhile, Jews started writing popular tunes in New York's Tin Pan Alley (28th Street). In time, the two streams met, and urban jazz began to blend klezmer riffs with black gospel harmonies and African rhythms. Some Yiddish melodies became jazz standards (eg. Bei Mir Bist Du Shein turned into Burton on the Ritz). Al Jolson popularized jazz and eschewed traditional Jewish music. His story is told in The Jazz Singer. Harry Kandel mixed jazz and klezmer (1917-21).

Classically trained and musically innovative, Benny Goodman was also one of the first major white musicians to play openly with black colleagues during the swing period, so flaunting an unofficial 'color bar'.

Religious School CornerL’dor v dor: from one generation to the next

We find these words at the end of the kedusha the part of the Amidah we only do as a community. But what does it mean from one generation to the next? What do we want to share from one generation to the next? What are the most important parts of our Jewish faith, our heritage, our history, our culture, our traditions, our values? How should we share these things?

Over the course of our school year we have spent a lot of time thinking about giving the next generation the richness of our Jewish heritage. We have spent time considering as families what do we want to give

to our children and why is it important? We have spent time in experiences that have given parents an opportunity to share with their children what they find most important. We have spent time as parents exploring what exactly we want to give to our children and why. This is an ongoing journey. It’s not something we can accomplish just once, but yet something that we do over and over and over again. It’s something we strive to consider as our children get older, it may be that we change what we share with them or clarify it more deeply. Our children gain so much from having the knowledge and experience of those who have come before them. We ourselves as adults gain so much from sharing with our children that which is important to us. Collectively we are creating a future that has the values of the past shaped by the knowledge of our present time. It is with this transfer of knowledge and transfer of values from one generation to the next one that we are able to Jewish-ly enrich the lives of our children, the lives of our families, and the lives of each generation.

Our school year is ending on May 22, 2016. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our Youth/Education staff & volunteers: Kimberly Ambrose, Michelle Caron, Josh Cline, Lisa Cline, Bonnie Comisar, Roei Dery, Leah Friedman, Josh Fuller, Rich Gordon, Allison Grosser, Phil Katzman, Maya Kovach, Mikayla Kravetz, Emily Krohn, David Leichtner, Matt Lipschitz, Ben Lukacher, Jeremy Markus, Nira Mehlenbacher, Michael Miller, Joan Papkin, Avi Presberg, Rebecca Reich, Sammie Reich, Amy Ressel, Halle Rogoff, Scott Rogoff, Jenn Schwab, Talia Schwartz, Sarah Schwarz, Gabi Silverstein, Shira Silverstein, Sydney Singer, Josh Sofian, Brad Spencer, Sheryl Tatelman, Gail Vail, Ally Yanoff, Melinda Yanoff, Rebecca Zaretsky, David Zarkowsky, Rachel Zeger and Daniel Zucker. **Ronald McDonald House Dinner: Each year Sisterhood sponsors a dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. We are part of a large group of volunteer organizations in our community who each sponsor one dinner for the 50+ family members who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are treated at the Golisano Children’s Hospital. We are proud to be part of such a giving group of people. This year, our chair is Marilyn Manis. She is coordinating the efforts for the Temple Beth El Sisterhood dinner on Sunday, June 26. Contact Marilyn for more information.

**Music for Rosh Hodesh:Sisterhood Rosh Hodesh programs at TBE are brightened with interesting speakers and our very own in-house musical composer/performers: Terri Rosenhouse and Barb Savage. Each time we meet there is interesting discussion, a small collation and beautiful music written and performed to match the month we are talking about. Terri and Barb have been composing music and lyrics for some time. When they share their talents, the world is a brighter place.

**Torah Fund and SEEDS: Sisterhood supports the training of clergy at JTS through donations to Torah Fund. This year, JTS is also embarking on the SEEDS program to renew and modernize the dormitory, library and chapel at JTS. Abbey Rasnick and Merle Markus co-chair the Torah Fund committee, which welcomes all donors at the Annual Torah Fund Luncheon.

Israel Scholarships AvailableIS IT YOUR DREAM TO STUDY IN ISRAEL?SISTERHOOD CAN HELP YOU TO REALIZE YOUR DREAM

There are many opportunities available to study in Israel. They vary in the organizations which sponsor them, the length of time spent in Israel and the specific emphasis of the study involved. You can survey the opportunities and explore your options.

TBE Sisterhood offers need-based financial assistance to help offset the costs of an Israel immersion program, which is defined as a teen trip of at least 10 days that is organized by a Jewish organization or an institution of higher education and designed to teach teens about Israel's history, current events, geography and culture. Scholarships are available to all pre-college students or college students. Applications available in the School Office.

Shiva Help BoxTemple Beth El Sisterhood hopes to provide a small measure of comfort to the newly bereaved of our synagogue family. Our project to make this time a little easier for families “sitting shiva” in the Rochester area is the SHIVA HELP BOX. The Shiva Help Box is a collection of items often needed at this time.

It is traditional to wash your hands after being at the cemetery, so among the items is a hand washing set to place at the home’s entrance. There is a booklet describing the custom of Shiva as well as a poster of our special way to say goodbye, the traditional blessing of consolation, at a time when it is often hard to find comforting words. Also included are other non-perishable items that are useful at this time.

As Sisterhood learns of a loss suffered by a member of our congregation, we reach out to the bereaved family with our condolences to bring a Shiva Help Box to their home. Please allow the Temple office to share your contact information with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn.
