PMFRC to pay virtual tribute to Canada July 1

Canada Day celebrations this year will include the virtual efforts of the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC).

Though safety regulations currently prohibit July 1 activities like fireworks and concerts, the PMFRC has prepared an exceptional surprise for the neigh-bourhood.

Community Engagement Coordina-tor Darby Briggs and her team asked staff members, volunteers and board mem-bers to send in videos revealing what the country means to them, which were then compiled into an homage to the nation.

“We just wanted to make it known that COVID-19 is no match to our resil-ient community and our Canadian spir-it,” said Briggs. “We wanted to show

why our staff and our volunteers, our friends and our community members are proud to be Canadian in this virtual salute to the True North.”

Subjects vary from the love of living in a multicultural country, and the abil-ity to stand up for what you believe in, to demonstrating a passion for hockey.

Briggs says the end product will be as creative as it is inspiring, but more im-portantly, it will be an entertaining way to pay tribute to the country on its birthday.

“The staff had just as much fun as I hope the community will have watch-ing it,” said Briggs.

Unlike traditional Canada Day cel-ebrations, viewers don’t have to live in Petawawa to take part. By broadcasting the video on the web, former residents, incoming residents, and any curious watchers can enjoy the PMFRC’s vir-tual tribute.

The hope is the video not only al-lows people to feel the Canada Day spirit in a safe, socially distant way, but also remind the community that the PM-FRC is still offering services, programs and support. Even with the virus pre-venting them from opening their doors to the public, the PMFRC is continuing its mission of supporting and building a resilient community of military families.

“Our military families always amaze me, and I think they amaze ev-ery staff (member) at the PMFRC every day,” said Briggs. “They have dedicated themselves to this lifestyle, they move around the country, they change con-stantly with their schools, jobs, families and friends and they always seem to do it in such a positive way.”

The video will be shown on their YouTube page as well as on the PMFRC Facebook group.

Dear CCMS: One-Sided OrganizationDear CCMS,I am a female Reservist

who works in a section with all male DND personnel. All of the managers and supervi-sors are men and all of the sought-after technical posi-tions, are held by men. It ap-pears that all the perks such as acting positions, courses, and even expensive office equip-ment, is provided through the manager to the supervisors or technicians. But, I’m seeing none of it. Help?

If you have been singled out and excluded from certain events or opportunities that are taking place, then you may have grounds for a harassment complaint. If you have been overlooked for career opportu-nities such as courses, then you could consider submitting a grievance through your chain of command.

In addition, if you feel that you have been discrimi-nated against you can submit a Human Rights Complaint under one of the thirteen Grounds of Discrimination. Especially, if for example, you applied for a vacant technical position that you were well qualified for and a

male who was less qualified ended up getting the job.

While women often rep-resent the target group for a lot of gender bias and gender discrimination, there are also examples in predominantly female organizations where males can fall victim to this differential treatment. It is extremely important that we all remain vigilant to this in-equitable practice, as it can

have a detrimental effect on everything from unit morale to operational effectiveness, so talk to a CCMS Agent.

The sky’s the limitBy Sergeant Robin MarlowCourse Director Flight Engineer/Loadmaster 1902/1903

On Thursday, June 11 2020, a few aircrew gathered on West ramp at 450 Tacti-cal Helicopter Squadron (THS) to witness a defining

moment in the careers of the squadron’s newest crew members. Master Corporal Dave Duperre (Loadmaster), Corporal Harrison Latulippe (Flight Engineer), Corporal Ray Lewis (Flight Engineer) all received their respective

wings in front of their peers. The awarding of flight

wings to CAF aircrew is a milestone moment; it is pre-ceded by years of training, culminating in their final airframe qualification. This is represented by four weeks of ground training and then finalized through approxi-mately 100 hours flown in

the simulator and in the CH-147F Chinook.

These new crew members have learned new skills to help them accomplish the wide va-riety of missions they will be called upon to perform both domestically and internation-ally. They have learned how to leverage their former skillsets and adapted to the complex crew dynamic aboard a Tacti-cal Aviation helicopter.

Through lots of hard work and diligent studying, these members successfully com-pleted the training and en-tered a new chapter in their careers. The Viking family at 450 THS looks forward to em-ploying them in the service of their nation.

4 COLUMN QUARTER PAGE FOR JUNE 11, 2020

As we continue to welcome immediate family members to gather and pay tribute to their loved ones, our continued mandate from the Province of Ontario and the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health stipulates the maximum number of people who may attend a funeral home at one time is 10 (not including our staff).

During these times, we continue to work attentively with families to ensure that immediate family members have an opportunity to grieve, mourn and say goodbye to their loved ones. Additionally, our ability to live stream funeral services from our chapel is a flexible solution that allows you to have the closest immediate family members or friends attend in person, while providing extended family, friends, neighbours and our community the opportunity to participate from home.

As our situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve, our funeral home remains committed to exceed the expectations of the families we serve.

tirelessly to care for them”- Eric Zadow

New hazard allowance for Canadian Armed Forces members deployed on COVID-19 frontlines

OTTAWA - The Excep-tional Hazard Allowance has been amended to compen-sate Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members who are deployed in COVID-19 risk environments.

Eligible CAF members deployed on Operation LA-SER, and the domestic por-tion of Operation GLOBE, who were/are at risk of ex-posure to COVID-19 due to their duties, will receive the allowance. The $78 per day allowance is retroactive to when they commenced their duties, and will be in effect until September 30, 2020.

Hundreds of CAF mem-bers are currently deployed to long-term care facilities in Ontario and Quebec, sup-porting Canadians impacted by COVID-19.

CAF members face the physical hardship of spend-ing all of their shifts wearing the full complement of Per-sonal Protective Equipment for up to 12 hours a day and without appreciable breaks in service. Moreover, women and men in the military have served in these facilities for months, while being away from their families during a highly challenging time.

“Our brave women and men in uniform are always ready to help Canadians. From the earliest days of the pandemic, our troops stepped up, as they always do, despite the risk to their

own health and safety,” said Defence Minister Harjit Saj-jan. “This Exceptional Haz-ard Allowance is one way we can recognize the significant efforts and risks faced by Ca-nadian Armed Forces mem-bers, who have worked hard to keep our family members and loved ones safe during this challenging time.”

In January 2020, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) ordered Operation GLOBE, a blended domestic and expeditionary operation supporting the repatriation of Canadians from overseas and providing quarantine capability in Trenton.

Operation LASER, a do-mestic operation providing CAF assistance to provinces was ordered in March, and by April, provinces began re-questing military assistance for COVID-related situa-tions.

“The Exceptional Haz-ard Allowance recognizes the risk assumed by those Canadian Armed Forces members deployed to high-risk COVID-19 environ-ments,” said General Jona-than Vance, CDS. “To all those CAF members who deployed to serve Canadi-ans, you have made us very proud of your dedication and professionalism.”

Since the start of Opera-tion LASER, CAF personnel have supported civilian au-thorities within 47 long-term

care facilities in Quebec and within seven in Ontario.

It is expected that ap-

proximately 4,500 CAF members will be eligible to receive this allowance.

Minister of National Defence and Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada mark National Indigenous Peoples Day

OTTAWA (June 21, 2020) - The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, and the Honour-able Lawrence A. MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, issued the

following statement today in recognition of National In-digenous Peoples Day:

“Today, we mark Nation-al Indigenous Peoples Day—a day to recognize and hon-our the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada

for their vital contribution to the fabric of this nation.

“The Department of Na-tional Defence and Veterans Affairs Canada are united in remembering the courage of the many thousands of In-digenous women and men

who served during the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, the Gulf War, in Afghanistan, and numerous other military operations.

“Indigenous peoples have a long and proud his-tory as part of Canada’s military. Their contributions to the strength and unity of our armed forces, both past and present, have been in-strumental in keeping our country safe and preserving our rights and freedoms.

“Currently, nearly 2,800 Indigenous people serve with the same passion and pride as those who came before them. Employed in trades across our Canadian Armed Forces, they serve as exceptional leaders from coast to coast to coast.

“People like Sergeant Donald James Lickers, a

member of the Hauden-saunee Seneca and of the Ca-nadian Armed Forces since 2002 as well as participat-ing in CAF recruiting initia-tives, diversity programs and the Defence Aboriginal Advisory Group. Sgt Lick-ers says he supports and advises command and peers on Indigenous issues in the CAF while balancing his identity as a First Nations person. Sgt Lickers has been gifted the teachings to carry the Canadian Armed Forces Eagle Staff and to care for the spiritual well-being of the Eagle Staff. The Defence Team is grateful to benefit from someone with as much depth of traditional knowl-edge and experience as Sgt Lickers.

“The unique circum-stances of the COVID-19

pandemic prevent us from celebrating this day like we have in past years. We en-courage all Canadians to safely recognize and honour the unique heritage and di-verse cultures of Indigenous peoples, by engaging in ac-tivities that respect physi-cal distancing such reading a digital copy of one of the books from the #Indigenous-Reads reading list, or by ex-ploring a virtual exhibit at a museum.

“Today, on National In-digenous Peoples Day, we thank First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples for their valuable service and immea-surable contribution. They are a source of strength and inspiration for everyone.”

Pembroke Petawawa District Community Foundation Awards ECSF Grants

On June 8, the Pembroke Pet-awawa District Community Foundation (PPDCF) awarded $36,000 in grants to three local charities to address food insecu-rity, mental health and general operating expenses. The grants are part of the Emergency Com-munity Support Fund (ECSF), funded by the Government of Canada. The ECSF is a $350 million fund that is being im-plemented with Community Foundations of Canada, the Ca-nadian Red Cross, and United Way Centraide Canada, in part-nership with local community foundations across the country. Its goal is to provide support to charities and non-profit or-ganizations serving vulnerable Canadians. First Step Options (above) received a grant of $7,000 to assist in covering op-erating expenses that will allow the organization to continue to offer free and confidential ser-vices to its clients. The Renfrew County District Food Bank (above right) received $10,000, which will allow an increase in refrigeration and freezer capaci-ty, as well as the ability to accept more perishable donations. The $19,000 received by the Robbie Dean Family Counselling Cen-tre (right) will focus on growing the grief and loss program to ensure everyone who needs help coping with loss has access to services. Black bears appear at Garrison Petawawa - put attractants awayGARRISON PETAWAWA - Black Bears

will be active this month at Garrison Pet-awawa as they have now emerged from their dens and are undoubtedly looking for food. Employees, residents, and visitors to Garri-son Petawawa are reminded to take the nec-essary steps to avoid attracting bears.

In May, bears are often found in forest openings and along roadsides feeding on new green vegetation. At this time of year, bears are generally eating grass, dandelions, clover and new poplar leaves. However, if food in our work areas and neighbourhoods is available- such as compost bins, garbage, grease bins, bird feeders, coolers and BBQ’s- bears may take advantage of the easy high calorie meal. Everyone must do their own part to reduce bear attractants and prevent human-bear encounters both at work and at home. Don’t forget that there are bear-proof waste bins at various locations around the garrison so please make sure to use them - they are there for everyone’s safety!

For more information to avoid attracting bears, read the Bear Awareness Pamphlet and Administrative Instruction (policy) on bears available by contacting Environmental Services at 613-687-5511 ex. 5960 or [email protected] and follow the tips below:

Avoid attracting bears to your work areas at Garrison Petawawa:• Keep outdoor common areas clean and garbage-free;• Ensure garbage bin doors/lids are secure at all times;• BBQs shall be cleaned regularly and stored when not in use;• Empty grease bins (from unit kitchens) at least 4 times per year.

Avoid attracting bears to your neighbour-hood:• Freeze food scraps in the freezer and place in compost bin the day of collection;• Place garbage at the curb on the morning of pick-up day and not the night before;• Rinse recyclable items before placing them in the recycling bin;• Never leave pet food outside;• Clean the grease from your BBQ regularly or keep your BBQ inside your garage when not in use;• Do not fill bird feeders between April and October.

If you are experiencing a bear problem, please ensure all attractants have been elimi-nated.

If you are in immediate danger as a re-sult of a bear, call the Military Police at 911

or 613-687-5511 ext 5444 from any outside line. If you encounter a bear while camping at Black Bear Campground, notify the staff at 613-687-7268, or call the Military Police at 911

in an emergency. For general information about bear at-

tractants contact Environmental Services at 613-687-5511 ext. 5960.

The Energy Efficiency at Home and at Work campaign com-mittee announced the winner of their contest - Eryka Par-ish sent in the correct answer to the question on the Energy Performance Contract cur-rently being completed at Gar-rison Petawawa. She was the lucky winner of the draw and took home her new hybrid bike from GearHeads. Eryka has lived in Petawawa for seven years and she and her family love being able to explore the outdoors and trails. She is ex-cited to go on family bike rides with her husband and son this summer. Eryka’s husband will also use the bike to commute to work. With this contest, the Energy Efficiency at Home and at Work Campaign wanted to show that individuals can also do their part in lowering en-ergy consumption and green-house gas emissions. Using a bike instead of a car is a healthy and sustainable way to reduce your environmental footprint. (Photo courtesy of the Garrison Petawawa Facebook page)

The Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC) is looking for recommendations from the public to accomplish their mission of helping the mili-tary community.

They currently cannot offer services in person as that would violate the na-tion’s COVID-19 regula-tions, but they have found alternative ways to support the military community. They’ve adapted their ser-vice delivery model to go virtual.

This has opened the or-

ganization up to a brand new world of possibilities. As such, they are hoping their clients approach them with what they’d like to see.

“We are ... trying to meet families where they are at,” said PMFRC Executive Di-rector Claudia Beswick.

They have been using methods like their newslet-ter, Facebook, Instagram, and the CAFConnection website to maintain contact with people. Their Youtube channel has also under-gone a revitalization, with many more videos of tips, tricks and activities to keep people entertained and in-formed.

Some of these ideas have come from client sug-gestions while others are from the staff members. Re-gardless, if it helps the com-munity, the PMFRC wants to do it.

“That’s our mandate, provide support to military families,” said Beswick.

It was a difficult deci-sion for the PMFRC to close their doors, but they have found that there is a benefit to going online.

“I think we are reach-ing more families than we ordinarily would because people are tuning in to see what is available,” said Bes-wick.

The PMFRC has opened up its services to more people as well, and every department has virtual of-fices. People from all over the country can access these Petawawa programs. The same can be said about Pet-awawa residents using the services of other Military Family Resource Centres (MFRC) all across Canada.

“I think that it is impor-tant that people know that there is support out there,”

she said. “It may not be even necessarily the MFRC. In a lot of our online com-ponents, we include our base partners.”

She knows how chal-lenging it can be for people staying at home, especially for families.

“We are opening up dif-ferent avenues and just ask-ing families to reach out to us,” said Beswick.

PMFRC staff as a whole is looking for feedback in ways they can improve their services while remain-ing at a safe distance. They want to target their activi-ties and programs to local need, tearing down any barriers that may exist.

Their weekly campfire meetings on Wednesday allows them to reach out to the community, share what’s going on at the staff level and see how they can better reach people.

All general inquiry calls may be made Mon-Fri from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. by calling (613) 602-1432. Recom-mendations can be made on their Facebook page as well.

Petawawa Pantry recieves donation from Pembroke Masonic Lodge

Petawawa proud of residents for response to COVID-19 pandemic

The Town of Petawawa recognized the efforts made by the community at large to pre-

vent the spread of COVID-19.Most people in town

have been adhering to the province’s restrictions and regulations and the Ren-frew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) guided by Dr Robert Cushman, Acting Medical Officer of Health.

“I’d like to say thank you to his team and also to all of the First Responders who are out there at this point and time,” said Mayor Bob Sweet, “and to the folks who are out there helping us through this pandemic. The service sta-tions, the grocery stores, all of those people who are helping us through this.”

It is not over by any stretch, he warned.

“But I think it is fair to say that we are very pleased by the efforts that are being put through by our community and the sacrifices. Collective-ly, we will get through this together.”

As soon as the govern-ment passed its recommenda-tions, council and town staff acted quickly to protect the public. Their actions included closing public buildings such as the Civic Centre, town of-fices and the library. Though

the municipal office doors are closed to regular traffic, the staff is still diligently at work using physical distanc-ing practices as they have since the beginning. Other businesses are also starting to re-open, following established government guidelines.

While he acknowledges the challenges people are facing at this time, Sweet en-couraged residents to look at the situation from a different perspective.

“I don’t feel stuck at home, I feel safe at home,” he said.

Washing hands, physi-cally distancing, wearing masks and other safety mea-sures are in place keep resi-dents safe.

“We can’t let our foot off the gas and become compla-cent. We are far from under-neath this particular situ-ation,” said Sweet, adding people must stay the course to avoid being overwhelmed by the virus.

As of June 7, there have been 25 confirmed cases in Renfrew County and Dis-trict. Of those cases, one was in Petawawa; 22 of the cases are resolved.

(Right) The Petawawa Pantry Food Bank received a very generous donation from the Pembroke Ma-sonic Lodge Branch #128. The donation contained about 400 lbs of food and $1,125 in monetary dona-tions. This support allows the Petawawa Pantry Food Bank to continue to help reduce food insecurity in Petawawa. In March and April the Masons also coordinated large donations to St. Joseph’s Food Bank in Pembroke. The Masons are grateful to everyone in the wider community for their continued support. For more information, or to contribute to a future donation, please contact Luke Cyr, Pem-broke Lodge Junior Warden, at [email protected]. (Submitted photo)
