This stylebook supersedes the Associated Press Stylebook, which should be consulted if this stylebook does not address the issue. When in doubt, consult the managing editor or copy chief. This stylebook should be checked for necessary corrections and updated prior to the start of each academic year.

1212 Building Use full name on all references. Only 1212 is acceptable in headlines when space dictates.

The 1212 Building housed the College of Professional Studies, Intercollegiate Athletics, the Golden Eagles ticket office, the Office of Student Financial Aid and University Advancement. Built in 1958, the six-story structure was originally a medical building. Marquette purchased the building in 1978 and remodeled it in 1979. It was demolished in May 2008 to make room for Zilber Hall. The building’s address was 1212 W. Wisconsin Ave.

16th Street Structure Use on all references to the parking structure located at 749 N. 16th Street. Do not use Structure 1.


The 1700 Building houses the Physician Assistant Studies Program and the College of Health Sciences. It was originally a Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin clinic. The building’s address is 1700 W. Wells St.


Formerly the home of The Old Line Life Insurance Company of America, Marquette acquired the 707 Building in 1999 from American General Corp. The 707 Building houses the Marquette Fund Office, Air Force ROTC, the Institute for Urban Life, the Service Learning Program and the Student Health Services Health Education program. The building’s address is 707 N. 11th St.

abbreviations and acronyms Never use parentheses to clarify an acronym. If parentheses are needed to clarify the acronym, then the acronym should not be used. When in doubt, spell it out.

In general, do not use fully capitalized acronyms unless each letter of the word is pronounced individually: NCAA, Aiesec.

about, approximately The Tribune uses about in reference to estimation: The amount of disgruntled people featured in the Tribune this year was about 200.

Using either word followed by a precise amount defeats their purpose.

Abbottsford Hall A nine-story building with 106 units that housed graduate students, married students and students with children until 2005, when it began conversion into a co-ed freshman dorm. In 2005 it housed some freshmen and some graduate students, and the transition to all freshmen was completed in 2006. The building was built in 1939 and purchased by Marquette in 1970. Its address is 722 N. 13th St. Use Abbottsford on second reference.

Academic Support Facility The Academic Support Facility contains offices for teaching assistants in the departments of English, philosophy and theology. The facility also houses engineering labs and the Office of Student Loan Accounts and Collections.

The facility sits adjacent to Humphrey Hall and was formerly part of Children’s Hospital. Its address is 735 N. 17th St.

Al McGuire Center McGuire Center on second reference. Its nickname, The Al, is acceptable in headlines or quoted material. McGuire is acceptable in headlines when space dictates.

The building is named for former men’s basketball coach Al McGuire, who led the Warriors to the 1977 NCAA championship. The late McGuire spent many years as a broadcaster for NBC.

The McGuire Center is home to the volleyball and women’s basketball teams and serves as a practice facility for the men’s basketball team. It was built on the old Cobeen and 707 Building parking lots.

Al’s Run Acceptable on all references, but full name Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk for Children’s Hospital.

Alumni Memorial Union Spell out on first reference in regular text. AMU on second reference, in headlines, in the events calendar and in graphics.

alumnus, alumni, alumna, alumnae Alumnus is a male graduate; alumni is a group of male or male/female graduates; alumna is a female graduate; alumnae is a group of female-only graduates.

Use alum in headlines or direct quotes only.

When identifying a graduate in a story, refer to the person as John Doe, a 1999 College of Communication alumnus.

Ament, Tom Ament, a Marquette alumnus and former Milwaukee County Executive, was at the center of the 2002 Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors pension scandal. He resigned amid recall threats.

AMU See Alumni Memorial Union.

Annex See Union Sports Annex.

Arts & Sciences, College of Note the ampersand. Use A&S on second reference. When talking about the college itself, refer to it as the Helen Way Klinger College of Arts & Sciences on first reference.

Associated Press, The AP on second reference. Articles of more than six inches should include a byline if one is available. If no byline, AP should appear in parentheses after the dateline: VILLA PARK, Ill. (AP) —

attribution Use Tracy said instead of said Tracy. An exception is when there is a very long title that accompanies the name: “I agree,” said Joe Shmoe, director of Marquette media affairs and a former staff member of MUTV.

Bayanihan Student Organization BSO on second reference.

Bayanihan means a group of people working together for a common goal or cause. BSO is the Filipino student organization.

black Use this racial designation only when specifically relevant to the story. Do not use African-American unless in quoted material or the formal name of an organization: John Doe, who is black, is chairman of the National Association of African-American Painters.

Blue Light Phones Capitalize and spell out on all references to the security phones offered by the Department of Public Safety that automatically ring at the DPS Communication Center when the receiver is lifted. There are 284 Blue Light Phones in the campus area.

board of directors, board of trustees Always lowercase.

BookMarq One word. The BookMarq, located at 818 N. 16th St. in Campus Town East, is operated by Follett Higher Education Group and is the official bookstore of the university.

break in (v.) break-in (n. and adj.)

Brew Cudahy Located in Cudahy Hall, Brew Cudahy was formerly known as the Brew2 and Brew Lagoon prior to that.

Brew Bayou Use full name on all references. It is located on the first floor of the AMU.

Brew Law Formally called Legal Grounds, located in the basement of Sensenbrenner Hall.

Brew on the Bridge Name of the coffee shop on the bridge between the Raynor and Memorial libraries.

Brew Straz Located on the first floor of Straz Hall.

Brooks Lounge Formerly known as the Pub, Brooks Lounge is located on the first floor of the AMU.

Business Administration, College of Always in full.

bylines All articles with at least six inches of copy and all photographs, with the exception of mug shots, must be credited.

CD Use CD on second reference for certificate of deposit and compact disc. In a music story, CD can be used on first reference.

Cafe See Marquette Place.

call letters Use a hyphen between the call letters and the format.

For television, include the channel: WTMJ-TV Channel 4, WISN-TV Channel 12.

For radio, include the numeric identifier after the call letters: WMYX-FM 99.5, WTMJ-AM 620.

campus The on-campus area is bordered by North 11th Street, North 17th Street, West Wells Street and West Clybourn Street. The only building in this perimeter that is considered off campus is Gesu Church. University-owned buildings outside this perimeter are also considered on campus, but not their surrounding areas.

Consider the rest of the neighborhood bordered by North 25th Street, North James Lovell Street, West Highland Avenue and West St. Paul Avenue as near campus. All other locations are off campus.

Campus Circle Project Refers to the failed Marquette initiative of the early 1990s to wall off West Wisconsin Avenue between North 11th and North 16th streets.

Campus Ministry Not University Ministry. Campus Ministry is housed in the Office of University Mission & Ministry, AMU 236. The Director of Campus Ministry is the Rev. Edward Mathie, S.J.

carillon Located in the tower of Marquette Hall, it is a set of 48 bells that weighs a total of 32 tons. Installed in 1968, the carillon rings at the quarter, half, three-quarter and full hour. Mini-concerts are played Wednesdays at noon.

Carmel Hall A three-story apartment building that houses about 60 upperclassmen. It was purchased in 1979 by the Society of Mount Carmel. Its address is 610 N. 17th St. The building was demolished in 2009 to make room for the planned Discovery Learning Complex.

Carpenter Tower Use Carpenter Tower on first reference to the co-ed residence hall. Carpenter is fine on second reference.

The building’s full name is M. Carpenter Tower Hall, named for Mary Carpenter, Michael Carpenter and Matthew Carpenter. It is home to the Office of Residence Life and Residence Hall Association.

The 16-story residence hall houses about 300 freshmen and sophomores, with specialty housing for freshmen engineering students. Built in 1922 as the Catholic Knights Tower, Marquette purchased it in 1960 and converted it into a women’s residence hall. It became the university’s first co-ed hall in 1972. Al Capone is said to have stayed there. Its address is 716 N. 11th St.

Central Library Use when referring to the Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Branch.

Central Mall The main academic campus, particularly the area around St. Joan of Arc Chapel and the large field north of Lalumiere Hall.

chairman, chairwoman Do not use chairperson. This rule also applies to spokesperson. If the gender is unspecified, use the masculine.

Chapel of the Holy Family Use full name or the chapel. The Eucharistic Chapel is a part of the Chapel of the Holy Family. It is located on the second floor of the Alumni Memorial Union.

CheckMarq Marquette’s online portal launched in 2004. Registration, campus housing signups, grade postings and the online student directory are all features of the site. CheckMarq replaced TVR for registration.

Clark Hall Use on first reference to the home of the College of Nursing. Clark is acceptable thereafter.

Clark was completed in 1982 and is named to honor Milwaukeean Emory T. Clark, founder of the former Clark Oil Co. Its address is 530 N. 16th St.

Cobeen Hall A freshman residence hall that houses about 360 women, Cobeen Hall has eight floors. The second floor provides specialty housing for nursing students. It was built as the LaSalle Hotel in 1928. Marquette purchased it in 1964. It was named for Charles Cobeen, a 1920 alumnus and former Marquette business manager. Its address is 729 N. 11th St.

College Democrats of Marquette College Democrats on second reference.

College Publisher Online program The Marquette Tribune used until Fall 2009 to publish its print editions on the Internet as well as original online content and breaking news stories as available.

College Republicans of Marquette See Marquette College Republicans.

colleges For academic colleges within Marquette, capitalize and spell out on first reference. Drop college in subsequent references but retain capitalization: Johnston Hall is home to the College of Communication. Lori Bergen is dean of the college.

Avoid abbreviations in articles, except UWM and MATC. Other abbreviations in headlines are acceptable, as long as the abbreviation is clear.

If a university has more than one campus, use a hyphen to signify the location: The University of Illinois-Chicago has a good architecture program. However, Illinois-Chicago has mostly commuter students.

Common Council See Milwaukee Common Council.

Communication, College of When talking about the college itself, use J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication on first reference. Not Communications.

Commuter Lounge Capitalize Commuter Lounge, which is located on the first floor of the Alumni Memorial Union.

composition titles Put quotes around book, song, movie, play, poem, computer game, TV show, lecture and art titles, except for the Bible and reference materials — dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. Capitalize The if it is part of the title.

Use italics for album titles.

Coughlin Hall Coughlin on second reference. This three-story, L-shaped building houses the faculty and administrative offices of the departments of English, history, philosophy and theology. Coughlin’s first floor also has offices for Marquette's Honors Program. Completed in 1977, the building is named for Charles L. Coughlin, president of Briggs & Stratton Corp. and a 20-year member of Marquette's former board of governors.

courses Courses should be capitalized and numbered according to their listing in the Undergraduate Bulletin: JOUR 4500, HIST 1001.

Cramer Hall Located at 604 N. 16th St., Cramer Hall is next to Schroeder Health Sciences building. It is home to Speech Pathology and Audiology within the College of Health Sciences.

Criminology and Law Society CLS on second reference.

Cudahy Hall Cudahy on second reference, unless confusion may arise with the city of Cudahy, at which point use Cudahy Hall throughout.

Cudahy was completed in 1994. It is home to Information Technology Services and the department of mathematics, statistics and computer science.

It is formally known as Katharine Reed Cudahy Hall, named for the mother of the building's principal donor, Michael Cudahy. Michael Cudahy is founder and chairman of Marquette Medical Systems, a Milwaukee-based manufacturer of equipment used in medical diagnosis. Its address is 1313 W. Wisconsin Ave.

cura personalis Marquette’s slogan. It is a Latin phrase meaning “care for the whole person.”

datelines Leave the state designation off cities in Wisconsin. Otherwise, follow AP style.

dates Abbreviate months when followed by a day: He left office in January. He left office Jan. 1.

Always write out days of the week. When describing when something did or will happen, write the time, day/date and place, in that order: The Fall Festival Dance is from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Wyndham Hotel.

If an event happened or will happen within six days of publication, use the day. If it happened or will happen more than six days from publication, use the date, no day.

Do not use tomorrow or yesterday, use the day of the week. Use today or tonight if the event happens on the day of the publication.

Set off dates from years with commas before and after year: On Jan. 13, 2010, I edited this stylebook.

D2L An online portal established in 2004. The site replaced Blackboard as an online forum for teachers to post assignments for students.

David A. Straz Jr. A major Marquette benefactor. See Straz Tower and Straz Hall.

Dental School Capitalize in all references to the actual building that houses the Marquette School of Dentistry. The building opened in fall 2002. Its address is 1801 W. Wisconsin Ave.

departments Do not capitalize academic departments, but capitalize non-academic departments.

Department of Public Safety Spell out on first reference. DPS is acceptable on second reference and in headlines. It is headed by Chief Larry Rickard. Its office is located in the 16 th Street Structure.

district Never abbreviate. Use a figure and capitalize when a formal name: Paul Henningsen was a former representative of the Fourth Aldermanic District, which includes Marquette. Paul Henningsen (4 th Aldermanic District, which includes Marquette) went to church Sunday.

Discovery Learning Complex The future home for the College of Engineering, three-story building under construction as of Spring 2010 and scheduled to be completed by summer 2011 after several phases of development. The College of Engineering building will feature an innovative Discovery Learning Laboratory and a two-story engineering materials and structural testing laboratory, as well as other new teaching and research laboratories. The five-story, 115,000-square-foot building is being constructed on the south side of Wisconsin Avenue between 16th and 17th streets.

East Hall See Straz Tower.

East Mall Loosely defined as the green space on the southeast end of campus, near Tory Hill and the Haggerty Museum of Art.

Eckstein Hall The new Law School building completed in the summer of 2010. Replaces Sensenbrenner Hall as the home of the Law School.

Educational Opportunity Program Federally funded academic program for low-income and first generation Marquette students. On second reference use EOP.

eMarq The name of the Marquette e-mail system. It replaced PostMarq mail, an email system that became operational in 1999.

Emory T. Clark Hall See Clark Hall.

Executive Inn The hotel was completely rented by Marquette in the fall of 2002 to house more than 70 students of an overflow freshman class. The Executive Inn’s address is 2301 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Ex Stasis Ex Stasis is the golden sculpture exhibited on Westowne Mall. It was featured in the 1988 Venice Biennale, an international art exposition held every two years in Venice, Italy. Its creator is Richard Lippold.

Firstar Bank Became U.S. Bank in 2002.

Freshman Frontier Program Use FFP on second reference. Students who show potential for success but do not meet Marquette's admission requirements may be selected for FFP. FFP students begin with a

five-week summer session, take a reduced course load in their first year and receive academic support services throughout the summer session and freshman year.

Freshmen Orientation Does not exist. See New Student Orientation.

fraternities and sororities On all references, use formal title of the specific group: Sigma Phi Delta. Do not use the term frat, unless in quoted material.

Frenn Building Frenn on second reference.

Purchased by Marquette in 1992 and renovated in 1993 as part of the ill-fated Campus Circle project, Frenn offers two two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom apartments for Marquette upperclassmen. Murphy’s Irish Pub occupies the building’s first level.

The building is named for Richard Frenn Sr. and his family, the previous owners. Its address is 1615 W. Wells St.

Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student Discussion Group GLB on second reference to the University Ministry-sponsored organization.

Gay/Straight Alliance Note the slash. GSA on second reference and in headlines.

Gesu Church Use Gesu Church to refer to the actual building: Mass will be held at Gesu Church.

Refer to the religious community that worships in the church as Gesu Parish: He belongs to Gesu Parish.

The building is formally called the Roman Catholic Church of the Gesu. It is officially considered off campus, despite its location.

Gilman Building Use Gilman on second reference.

Gilman was built in 1912 and renovated in 1993. The Marquette-owned property offers upperclassmen studio and one-bedroom apartments. Its address is 1621 W. Wells St.

GPA Acceptable on all references for grade-point average.

Gymnasium See Marquette Gym.

Haggerty Hall Use Haggerty Hall on all references to avoid confusion with the Haggerty Museum of Art.

Built in 1941, Haggerty Hall underwent a $4.7 million renovation in 1988 and serves as the main building for the College of Engineering. The building is named for alumnus Patrick Haggerty, co-founder of Texas Instruments. It was formally known as Haggerty Engineering Hall. Its address is 1515 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Haggerty House Former residence hall for male transfer students that opened in fall 2003. It was located in the former Sigma Delta Phi house at the corner of North 16th and West Wells streets.

Haggerty Museum of Art Use the full name on first reference. Haggerty Museum is acceptable on second reference.

Hegarty Apartments The housing units to the west of Jim Hegarty’s Pub. The address is 1124 W. Wells St. Like the pub, the apartments were owned by Stephen Wolff. As of May 2009, the university is in litigation to purchase the building.

Heg’s See Jim Hegarty’s Pub.

Helfaer Tennis Stadium Use Helfaer Tennis Stadium when referring specifically to the home courts of the intercollegiate tennis teams. The building is officially called the Helfaer Recreation Center and Tennis Stadium.

Helfaer Theatre Helfaer Theatre houses the department of performing arts. The 226-seat theatre offers four productions a year. Helfaer has a studio room for acting, directing and dance instruction as well as a costume shop and set design shop. The theatre, formally known as the Evan P. and Marion Helfaer Theatre, is named for the pharmaceutics industrialist Evan P. Helfaer and his wife. It opened in 1975.

Henke Lounge The Henke Lounge is located on the Alumni Memorial Union’s second floor and is used for meetings and small receptions. Identify it as being in the AMU.

Holthusen Hall Holthusen on second referenece.

Originally known as the Varsity Building, Holthusen Hall contains Varsity Theatre. Holthusen also is home to the Counseling Center, the Office of Marketing & Communication, the Graduate School and the Office of Public Affairs.

Built in 1937, the building was purchased in 1967 and renamed in 1985 to honor Henry Holthusen, founder of the Milwaukee Manufacturing Corp. Its address is 1324 W. Wisconsin Ave.

honors program Lowercase on all references.

Humphrey Hall Humphrey on second reference.

Humphrey, which provides apartments for upperclassmen and some intercollegiate athletes, was purchased by Marquette in 1988. Before that, the building and surrounding structures served as Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for 65 years. It is formally Glenn Humphrey Hall, named for a Milwaukee automobile dealer. Its address is 1716 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Hunger Clean-Up Marquette’s annual citywide community service project, which is purported to be the largest one-day service event in the country. Clean-Up with the hyphen is the style preferred by organizers.

Information Technology Services The university department responsible for most issues regarding technology. ITS is acceptable on second reference and in headlines.

Jesuit Residence The Jesuit Residence is home to more than 50 Jesuits. Originally the Stratford Arms Hotel, Marquette acquired it and converted into a women's residence hall. The building was renovated and became the Jesuit Residence in 1974.

Avoid the colloquial Jes Res except in quoted material.

Joan of Arc Chapel. The proper name is St. Joan of Arc Chapel. A remnant of 15th century France, the St. Joan of Arc Chapel contains a stone on which Joan of Arc prayed before leading her countrymen into battle against the English in 1429. The chapel, originally known as La Chappelle de St. Martin, was moved stone by stone from Chasse, France, to New York in 1927. It was dedicated on Central Mall in 1966. The chapel is believed to be the only medieval structure in the Western Hemisphere still used for its original purpose.

Jodi O'Brien Former candidate for the vacant dean position of the College of Arts & Sciences. Was offered the position and then had the offer rescinded due to published works that conflicted with Marquette's Catholic mission and identity. An open lesbian, O'Brien works at Seattle University in Seattle, Wash., a fellow Jesuit University.

John P. Raynor, S.J. Library See Raynor Library.

Johnston Hall Johnston on second reference.

This five-story Gothic-style building is home to the College of Communication. Johnston opened in 1907 and is Marquette’s oldest building. When Marquette outgrew its original campus on North 10th and West State streets, Johnston was constructed as an all-in-one building. It housed a library, an auditorium, science laboratories, classrooms and Jesuit quarters. Johnston was renovated in 1938 and 1975. Johnston’s basement is underwent major renovations during the summer of 2009, and the exterior of the building went under construction from Summer 2010.

The building is named for benefactor Robert A. Johnston, who died in 1907. Its address is 1131 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Jim Hegarty’s Pub Bar formerly located at 1120 W. Wells St., the bar was formerly known as Jim Hegarty’s Irish Pub, before it closed in April 2010. Hegarty’s is acceptable on second reference, but avoid the colloquial Heg’s except in headlines. It was owned by Stephen Wolff before Marquette purchased the property.

JUSTICE Jesuit University Students Together in Concerned Empowerment is the full name of this organization but JUSTICE is acceptable on all references.

Krueger Parent and Child Center The Krueger Parent and Child Center houses Marquette's Child Care Center and the School of Education's Parenting Center. The Child Care Center opened in 1989 and is licensed to care for 137 children ranging from six weeks to seven years of age during the academic year. During the summer, the center offers a children's adventure program for children up to age 11. The Parenting Center teaches parenting strategies.

The Krueger Center is named for the late William A. Krueger, a Milwaukee printing executive.

Lalumiere Hall Lalumiere Hall is the main humanities building. Lalumiere houses the departments of foreign languages and literatures and social and cultural sciences. Lalumiere resembles a giant honeycomb with its 11-foot high, 7-foot wide oval windows cast in a facade of concrete and white quartz panels. The building features an audio-visual language laboratory to assist students in foreign language skills. Opened in 1970, Lalumiere is named for the Rev. Stanislaus P. Lalumiere, one of Marquette's founders and its fourth president.

It is formally known as Lalumiere Language Hall

Law School Capitalize when referring to all references to the Marquette Law School. Lowercase when referring to law schools at other universities.

The building itself is Sensenbrenner Hall. The Law School will relocate to Eckstein Hall upon its completion, which is expected in the summer of 2010.

LEAD Center Use on all references to the Leadership Education and Development Center. The LEAD Center is in Alumni Memorial Union 140.

Les Aspin Center for Government Use Aspin Center on second reference.

Located in Washington, D.C., it provides fall, spring and summer internships for Marquette students, not specifically for political science majors. The center is named for the late Les Aspin, a former Marquette professor who served as President Clinton’s first secretary of defense.

The Rev. Tim O’Brien is the center’s director.

O’Hara also housed the offices of the Provost, Academic Affairs, University Mission and Identity, External Relations and Administration, General Counsel and Public Affairs. Built in 1920, the building was formerly a private residence. Marquette had a three-year lease on the building to accommodate an increased demand for housing, and the hall closed after the 2005-’06 school year. The building is owned by University Partners LLP and was previously leased to the state and used as a halfway house for the Milwaukee Women’s Department of Corrections.

The McGuire Center opened in 2004 and is home to the volleyball and women’s basketball teams. It also serves as a practice facility for the men’s basketball team. It is located on what used to be the parking lots behind Cobeen Hall and the 707 Building.

Redshirt One word. Some athletes redshirt their freshmen seasons and stay at Marquette for five years, only playing in their four years of eligibility on the sports team. NCAA transfers are required to redshirt one season, and some athletes may obtain a medical redshirt if injured before the start of the regular season.

All other stats should follow regular AP rules: Scott Merritt scored 8 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Sox This is a plural form derived from the word stocking. When used in a possessive form, add an apostrophe only: the White Sox’ win last night was incredible.
