7. Expert Opinion
7.1 JOWA JOWA AB is a leading company in the marine equipment industry. It is a Swedish company which
primarily started with separators in 1970 in Sweden and today it expands up to the far east with its
largest subsidiaries in China and its biggest markets being China and South Korea. JOWA will be
exhibiting in the Nor –Shipping event in June 2013 in Oslo.
Mikael Nehvonen, Sales Director, JOWA.
Mikael joined JOWA AB in April 2011. He holds a range of experiences for the last 34 years. His
primary education was in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. He started his career with EI-
Marine AB as a marine electrician. His past experiences include working as a Electrical Supervisor
and Control Systems with Wartsila NSD, Sales Manager with CA Class AB, Area Sales Manager
for Consillium Marine and Safety AB, and currently he holds the position of sales director with
JOWA AB.
7.1.1 JOWA’s OWS Visiongain-: JOWA is a leading provider of OWS. Most separators available in the market use the
same technology. How is your system unique while delivering the 15ppm MARPOL requirements?
Your competitors are fulfilling the 5ppm performance standard requirements as recommended by
DNV, why is JOWA not trying to do the same. Although 5ppm is not a regulatory requirement, don’t
you think it would make your product more competitive?
Mikael-: Cost effective solution is the uniqueness of JOWA. Few if any maker of quality separators
can compete in terms of price. If they do, quality is less. All JOWA separator tanks are made of
high quality stainless steel (316L), made to last through the ship’s lifetime.
Jowa separators with the 5 ppm solution will be certified during January 2013. Jowa also
manufactures its own measuring cell as the only separator maker in the world.
7.1.2 JOWA’s Success Mantra Visiongain-: What are the main strengths of your product? JOWA has a huge customer base due
to its popularity with various products in the maritime market. In comparison to all your other
products, what % of JOWA’s business is through OWS equipment?

8. Leading Companies in the MARPOL Marine Auxiliary System Market
8.1 Leading MARPOL Marine Auxiliary System Providers
8.1.1 Alfa Laval Alfa Laval is not subject to any introduction due to the brand popularity it holds in the maritime
industry. 300 patents, 28 production units, 16,000 employees, 100 customer countries, and 125
years of experience defines the reason for the reputation the company holds. With the acquisition
of Aalborg Industries in 2011, Alfa Laval strengthened its foundation a step further. The company
has structured itself purely for customer focus. In January 2013 Alfa Laval announced its contract
for the exhaust gas cleaning system worth $9.5m. Alfa Laval also signed a contract worth $1.1m in
December 2012 which is scheduled for delivery in 2013 for its treatment system to reduce the NOx
emissions. The success of Alfa Laval lies in its strategy of expansion of the portfolio of the
company and this can be complimented by the fact that on an average the company introduces 33
new products every year for the various industries which includes marine, offshore, energy and
other sectors. Receiving orders in millions of US $ for the maritime industry is now a regular routine
for the company. As far as the MARPOL marine market is considered its oily water separator,
exhaust gas cleaning systems (NOx and SOx emissions reducing systems), and tank cleaning
systems, are some of the most popular products. Due to the change in emission regulations the
company is focussing on the relevant products.
8.1.2 GEA Westafalia GEA is a German based company head quartered in Odele. GEA is a major group with some of its
focus in the MARPOL Marine Auxiliary system market. GEA Westafalia is one of the oldest
companies and was GEA was added to the Westafaila Group in 2008. It is interesting to note how
a company changes its focus and explores, innovates and achieves the various opportunities. GEA
Westafalia is currently engrossed in marking a strong position within the ballast water treatment
system market. In 2012 GEA WESTAFALIA received orders for 160 separators for the new eagle
class generation from the Korean company DSME. GEA have been observed to expand their
marine market further by authorising distribution agreement in May 2012 for the Gulf Coast region.
