A Word from Our President

April/May 2014

Dear Otters,

HELLO PACIFICA CLUB KEYERS! I am your new

president and I could not be more excited to serve you this

term! Sadly the IP board will being leaving us soon, but that

does not mean we cannot continue the amazing work

that they have done. I understand that this past term has

been the best in a long while, but that does not mean we

cannot have an even better term. It just means that we

have to put in the extra effort to form our club into

something we can be proud of. I will be putting all my time

and effort into this club because it has been my passion

throughout my high school career and I only ask one thing

from the members and that is to care about the club. It is

perfectly fine if a member cannot make it to every DCM,

every service, or every social, as long as they wished they

could have been there. This term, I will make it my board’s

goal to make sure that every member feels welcomed

and thus care about the club as much as I do. Because

without the members, there would not be a Key Club.

Sincerely,

Wayne Nguyen

President

Stay GOLDEN, Mariners!

Our Goals

From working as Pacifica Key Club’s secretary in the

past term I figured out that member attendance is very

important. Our home club faced a very large growth in

membership, but that did not solve all the problems of the

club, instead it just emphasized areas of improvement. With

more than 200 members in the club it is heartbreaking to see

only 10 people sign up for a service. It became evident that

the number of members a club has means nothing if it

cannot get them to volunteer and care about the club. This

is why for the term of 2014-2015, as president of Pacifica Key

Club, I want to make it my personal goal to encourage

members to attend more services and events and hopefully

have everyone become active members. This goal may

seem far stretched for a club with over 200 members, but I

am certain with the help from my new board, it should be an

easy feat.

Sincerely,

Wayne Nguyen

President

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

Our Goals This year my goal as Vice President is to

provide many wonderful services for the club

that will attract more members to attend. I hope

this year we will be able to showcase our spirit

and win a spirit stick for Pacifica at a DCM! I

wasn’t to show the Division that our club is

productive and spirited and I wish to achieve

that by having all of our members be hyped up

for the upcoming year. I also want to show other

clubs how two Vice Presidents can be beneficial

to the club, and to do that I will handle all my

obligations along with the help from Ivy Chen. I

wish to make this year the one that shows our

Key Club at the top of its game!

Sincerely,

Drexler Kim

Vice President

This year are so many things that I will like to

achieve as a member as well as a Co-VP. First off, as

a member, I would like to service our community by

going to as many services as I can possibly go to,

while also interacting with other members. There are

so many people in the division that I have yet to meet

and it would be great to get to know them better by

attending DCMs and socials. I would also like to

achieve is to become more spirited and have a

closet full of teal/otter wear. As Co-VP, I would like to

see PHS's Key Club have more active members who

are willing to go out to services and participate in Key

Club events. In addition, having all the members

graduate with a shiny Key Club medal over their

graduation dress would be another goal that I would

like our members to accomplish.

Sincerely,

Ivy Chen

Vice President

A Message from Us…

To start off the term, my

goal as a club is to make

sure that our members

always feel welcome in key

club and are able to further

input their voice and

opinions. I personally know

what it’s like to feel left out

and my voice unheard. I

want to give members the

opportunity to grow as a

leader in their experience in

key club. I want members to

know that they don't have

to be on board to be a

leader.

Being new to board, my

personal goal as a key clubber is

to build upon my character and

be more open to meeting new

people. One of the club's core

values is character-building, and I

find this value really important in

being a leader.

Sincerely,

Christina Fuehrer

Secretary

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

Coming into this term as treasurer, I had had

plans for the near future to continue the great

legacy set by the former cabinet. As for my long

term goals, they had always consisted of general

ones such as maintaining consistency in

membership participation and making sure that our

club is represented as an exemplary Key Club for

other schools to be able to look up to. However,

entering this year’s term and finding that it was

much more rigorous and demanding that I had

expected, these broad hopes that I had for the

well-being of the club became much more focused

and centered around leading our members, more

specifically by being role models for them through

displaying the four core values: character building,

inclusiveness, leadership, and caring. Though having

a thorough list of ideas and plans for the future is

important, I definitely learned the importance of

setting an example to our fellow otters and having

the ability to follow through with such plans with

these qualities constantly in mind. My individual

goals and future goals for this term are to get to

know at least a third of the members names, while

also getting to know them in person, and to perfect

our club cheers with our members so that we can

finally get a spirit stick (preferably at the division

banquet).

Sincerely,

Nancy Seo

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

As Bulletin Editor for 2014-2015

term, I have many goals for our club

here at Pacifica. One major goal I

have for my club is to be able to

provide new and more exciting

services and events to attract and

bring out the inactive members. As an

editor, it is my job to communicate to

the club and its member and this year,

I am willing to put hard work and

dedication into the communication

aspect. An individual goal I have

myself as a member is to be able to

get to know the members on a

different level. As active as I am in Key

Club, I still don’t know half of the

members and being the

communication key in this club, I want

to put in time to get to know and

introduce myself to old and new

members. I want to be able to work on

my communication skills to meet other

members from different divisions as well

as schools to reach out to a bigger

community of key clubbers.

Sincerely,

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

As a cabinet member this year I would

like to achieve a lot of things before my

term ends. First I would like to update

our club website as frequently as

possible as well as fix any issues

members have with our

communication. I would also like to help

all my fellow cabinet members with all

the support I can give in order to make

their lives easier. What I really want to

emphasize this year is service to my

fellow members since I believe that is

the whole purpose to Key Club which is

to help build my home, school, and

community. This year I am willing to put

in more time to attend all the services

my club has to offer as well as work

behind the scene and help build a

strong structure for the members and

the club.

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

Our Goals As Freshman Class Representative, I play a small

role in leading our home club towards success, however I

think that everyone on board has equal parts in

benefiting our future and I believe that if we all work

together we can achieve our goals. One goal I have for

our home club is to WIN THE SPIRIT STICK. Usually, our

home club has the greatest attendance and one of the

best performances of liveliness. I believe that we can win

that spirit stick by increasing member participation and

unity within our club. Another goal is to publicize our

events, such as socials, DCMs, and services better

through social media like Reminder101, Facebook, or

Instagram as well as illuminating Pacifica’s campus with

Key Club posters and notifying most members face to

face. Our home club is growing larger and larger each

year due to our leaders doing a better job of taking care

of community and leading us to do great things,

although one thing is lacking from our division. The

service aspect of Key Club is not emphasized well

enough and the spirit of Key Club is. I want to change

that throughout our home club. I want to get members

actively involved in services more often, if not as equally

as DCMs. I do not want them to think of services as a

chore, but rather a way to give back to the community

that raised them, or a nice thing to do during their leisure

time. The greatest thing about Key Club is that it

contributes to amazing organizations that donate their

time and efforts into good causes such as the Eliminate

Project with helps eliminate tetanus for mothers and

babies around the world. In the future, I’d like to

emphasize both spirit and service aspects of my home

Key Club as well as pass it on to the Division and Key

Club as a whole if possible.

Sincerely,

May Nguyen

Freshman Class Rep.

A Message from Us…

April/May 2014

As a key club member and cabinet member, I have plenty of

aspirations for my 2014-2015 term. First of all, I would like to be a lot

more active and enthusiastic at events. I feel like I can shy away

from a lot of the division members because they seem so much

more engaging than I am. At DCMs and other socials, I would

definitely like to show a more outgoing attitude towards whichever

activity our key club would be participating in. In addition, as a

cabinet member, I would like to more active in the planning and

logistics of our club. The service, fundraising, and meeting sides of

our club are something I would like to be more dynamic in.

Oftentimes, I feel as if I don't contribute as much as I should, and

that's partly my fault. As of next year, changing this fault is something

I will try to fix and improve on. Overall, I feel as if this year will be the

best year our club will have seen in years. Sincerely,

Andrew Chi

Let's just start by saying that this service was a

blast! And yes, pun is intended. As any typical Key

Club service, we worked with kids under the age of

10 or 11 and it was so great seeing their spirited

faces light up when they fired their plastic bottle

rockets up in the sky! Seeing their faces gleem into

the sun as they watched their rockets fly was

extremely touching. However, what was more

touching was seeing their parents surge with a

feeling of accomplishment. You see, although this

event was open to all children, it was not rare to see

a father or mother bring their children to work at

"Boeing" on a week to play with science. All of this

emotion was presemt but very hard to notice

because of all the excitement both the children and

parents were feeling.

.Sure, there were a lot of "duds" but

that didn't stop any of the kids from making

more rockets. They all had that "Never give

up spirit" and it is truly a reason why I love

volunteering. But hey, the fun didn't end

there! I was able to shoot up a few rockets

myself with my station partner Khanh Phan

and boy did we have fun. I almost forgot, it

was actually a hot day; but because of all

the joy, excitement and water spraying

everywhere, it didn't even matter. In all

honesty, I would love to return to this service

because after I left that service, I realized

that science was not boring after all

Patton Carnival (Friday, May 2, 3:30PM-8PM)

The Patton Carnival Service The Patton Carnival

was on May 2nd. After school, all we otters

gathered over at Patton Elementary School.

Some of us walked to Patton under the hot sun

that was melting us and most of us got rides to

get over to Patton. When we arrived at Patton,

we were all assigned jobs and tasks to do by Mrs.

Kim, Drexler's mom. About five or six of us worked

at the food stands or booths serving out pizza or

hot dogs. The others spread out among the

blacktop and grass area to help out with other

booths in need of assistance. Many of the

individuals worked alongside with another parent

in charge of a booth. As I walked along the

blacktop looking for a booth to assist in, most

booths were filled with us helping out and putting

a smile on all the kids faces! On the grass area,

we had the drinks stand. There was about five

people working at the drinks stand. At the drinks

stand, soda and water were being sold out to

whoever was thirsty and needed a little drink.

Towards the end of the night as everything was

being cleaned up, most of us gathered in the

prize room. Inside the prize room was complete

chaos with so many kids in there wanting to claim

their reward. We had two people working at the

door counting tokens and the rest of us behind

the tables helping out get kids what they want.

We worked alongside NHS at this service. All of us

had a lot of fun here and hope to serve this

school and community with otterly spirit again

next year!

April Highlights: April DCM/March of Dimes

The March of Dime DCM/Service was a fun

and wild experience. Both Division 4 North and

Division 4 west both held their DCM at Fashion

Island. The DCM started out with the

announcement of the new Division Board as well as

a mini spirit battle. Bolsa Grande won the spirit stick

which concluded the event. After the DCM

members later walked with the other runners for

support.

-Stephon Tran

On March of Dimes, we met up at Fashion

Island where we went through our cheer with our IP

LTG Tommy Dang and Hanh Do arrived late.

However, the DCM was still fun and exciting

especially with introducing the new home club

board members to the division and the spirit stick

competition. After that we participated in the March

of Dimes event where we walked around Fashion

Island and got to experience the many activities at

the finish line.

-Drexler Kim

Aprils DCM was our first DCM of the 2014-2015

term. It was also combined along with a service

called March Of Dimes. We joined together as a

whole division as well with a couple of other schools

from different divisions to celebrate the beginning

of the term. I enjoyed this DCM/service because it

was very interactive. The weather was nice to walk

miles in to support a good cause plus we also got to

spend time with our whole division. I enjoyed this

DCM/service and hope for similiar ones in the future!
