The overall annual divorce rate for the

Marine Corps for FY 2016 as of June 2016.3

Of the Marines who were divorced in FY 2016, the overall average age was 29

(average age for Marine Officers is 36 and Enlisted Marines is 28). About 91% of all

Marines, who were divorced this year, were enlisted and about half of those Marines

were NCOs ( 14% Pvt – LCpl; 51% NCOs; 26% SNCOs; 9% Officer).3

In FY 2016, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment history was 1.9%

compared to 2.2% for Marines with no deployment history. Marines with a

deployment history have historically similar divorce rates as Marines with no

deployment history.3

There was an average of 1.2 children involved in each divorce during FY 2016.3

The average Marine family has 1.13 children.1 For purposes of this report, the

Marine family is defined as married Marines with a child, married Marines without a

child, and single Marines with a dependent child.

The largest age group of children as categorized below is the School-Age group

(defined as 5 to 12 years) with 40,178 children. Of all Marine Corps children, 48% are

5 years of age or younger, compared to approximately 41% for the other Services.3

Marine and Family

There was an increase in the number of children of Marines across most age groups

from 2007 to 2011, with the sharpest increases occurring in the infant and school-age

groups. Since 2011, the number of children has been decreasing across all age groups.3

The general increase in the number of children from 2008 to 2011 coincided with the

increase in the size of the total force. In 2016, there was an average of 0.53 children

per Marine, and in 2011 there were 0.63 children for each Marine, which is the

highest ratio in last thirteen years.3 Since 2011, the Marine Corps total size decreased

by almost 9%, while the number of children decreased by 20%.1

There are 8,523 Marines enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) with 10,749 exceptional family members.4

From 2007 to 2013, EFMP enrollment increased consistently in spite of an overall

reduction in the force. Since 2013, EFMP enrollment remained fairly stable though the

overall number of children of Marines decreased.

Many Exceptional Family Members (EFMs) have more than one condition. Premature birth, Cerebral Palsy, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Intellectual Deficiency, and Cystic Fibrosis make up a combined 2.9% of all conditions.4

These programs and services include: Behavioral Health, Family Care, Personal and Professional Development, Semper Fit & Recreation, and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response. MF also represents the Marine Corps before Congress, Department of Defense, Department of the Navy, civilian sponsored boards and committees on family readiness and quality of life matters.
