As Term 3 comes to a close, we take time to stop and think about all those in our world who need peace in their lives. Our intrepid travellers have been very busy! They are having a wonderful time and we are receiving lots of photos and news about their days. Here are some posts from Mrs. Molinaro:- “Selamat dari Indonesia! We are having a fantastic time. We have done so much in 3 days: Borobudur for sunrise, riding in an andong (horse and cart) as well as a becak, visited villages, survived crazy traffic, made mini wayang kulit and of course met up with our partner school friends.

Selamat tinggal Yogya! Goodbye to Yogya... and hello to Bali. But before that we visited the Beringharjo market in the famous Jalan Malioboro for some clothes shopping then to Prambanan Hindu temple. This beautiful complex was built in the 9th century then destroyed in an earthquake in 1006 and is still being rebuilt. We had to say farewell to our lovely Singkawang friends but not before we were treated to some on-bus dandgut music and a farewell dance performed by the students. Overall a wonderful experience and one we are all very happy to have shared. “

As they head into the last few days of their trip, we wish them well and a safe journey home on Saturday. It has been an amazing experience for the students. and adults alike. We look forward to hearing all about it next term and sharing the news with the school community.

Over the past term, we have had Breakfast Club operating every Wednesday morning. With the support of Anglicare, the school has been able to provide a simple breakfast for students one day a week. This program could not have run without the wonderful support of Cassie Capobus-Thorpe, Louisa Munro, Jo Fairweather and Lynne Morgan. Between them, they have buttered a lot of toast and stirred 100’s of cups of Milo!! A huge thank you to Louisa, Jo, Cassie and Lynne from all of us for their commitment and help.

Over the school holidays, there will be even more activity on the building front! The front of the school will be having a major makeover and as such parking arrangements will need to be changed considerably. Staff will be required to park off site, in either High St, Crawford or McIntyre St. As such, parents will need to be aware that there will be less parking available at pick up and drop off times in these areas. Please look for an email prior to Term 4 commencing that will give further details. We are going to have wonderful new administration block and surrounding area by the end of the year… the short term pain will be well worth the long term gain for our school! Thank you for your understanding.

Next term both MP and SP head off on their annual Camps. MP are going to the beautiful Camp Jungai in Rubicon in week one and then SP take the road to Canberra in the second week. Thank you to the staff involved who have spent many hours preparing for the camps and to the parents who have made themselves available to go to the camps. These are always great experiences for the children and promise to be something they will really enjoy.

Reminder:- The first day of Term 4 is a Pupil Free Day for students and a Professional Development opportunity for staff. The focus of the day is Student Wellbeing. We are looking to further develop strategies and ways of providing the best levels of engagement and wellbeing for our students. The day will be led by our Wellbeing team and will be a very valuable opportunity for all staff to work together in this very important area.

Students commence school for Term 4 on Tuesday 10th October.

Reminder: Please join us at 12.30pm in the M/P Hall for the parade of the teams. The parade will be followed by a hot dog lunch (pre-ordered). The money raised this year will go towards replenishing the lunchtime sports equipment that is purchased by the SRC. This equipment is really well used every lunchtime and is a great way to get the children physically active.

Thank you to all of our families, students and staff for all their support and contributions over the past t term. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and

look forward to seeing everyone again next term.

Belgrave Heights Convention Centre, Convention Road, Belgrave Heights This three-day conference is an opportunity for all Catholic families to come together for mutual spiritual, moral and social support, in a fun holiday atmosphere. The conference is planned as both affordable and family friendly, catering for whole families, with conference talks for parents and other adults, and catechetical talks and activities for teens and children of all ages. Bishop Peter Elliott will preside at the official opening Mass on the Saturday. Details: Clare on 9543 5613 Bookings: www.trybooking.com/276710 2017 National Fertility Conference Friday 27 October, 6.30pm for 7pm start, and Saturday 28 October. Mercy Lecture Theatre, Australian Catholic University, 17 Young Street, Fitzroy. On the Friday evening, the conference opens with a free public forum, to be addressed by Laureate Professor John Aitken, BSc MSc PhD ScD FRSE, of the University of Newcastle, presenting on the topic ‘IVF reconsidered: impact of age, affluence and avarice’, along with Professor Pilar Vigil, BMed MD PhD FACOG of the Pontifical University Chile, presenting the talk ‘Reclaiming women’s health: a global restorative approach’. Professor Vigil will give a masterclass on the Saturday from 9am, and the conference will conclude with a Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral at 6pm on the Saturday evening, followed by the conference dinner in the Mary Glowrey Building at ACU. This year’s Festival will welcome over 15,000 young people and will include bishops and Catholic speakers from around Australia, along with international guests, including possibly the world’s most popular Christian musician, Matt Maher. Details: http://www.cam.org.au/youth/ACYF-2017/Overview Register: http://www.youthfestival.catholic.org.au/register Bingo Volunteers Needed St Mary’s Bingo (Thursday nights) is looking for at least two callers to ensure the viability of Bingo into 2018. Bingo plays an important role in providing income for the Parish and it relies on volunteers to do this. Without sufficient people who are willing to give two hours of their time every 5 or 6 weeks, St Mary’s Bingo will close at the end of the year. Phil Jarvis trains the Bingo callers so if you can help, please phone Phil 0439 037 728 or Sue 5792 1098. We are happy to accept volunteers for checking and selling tickets too! Holiday wishes and blessings It has been a very busy and at times stressful time over the last few months, but there have been wonderful highlights too! Our Confirmation candidates received the sacrament at the hands of Bishop Terry Curtin and we have had the school’s Feast Day this month commemorating the birthday of Mary. This day is a reflection of the fulfilment of the promise of God at the time of the conception of Mary exactly nine months ago. It is fitting that the parish church is named after the December feast day and the school after the September day. Just as the birth of our Lady is the fruit of her conception, so the school is the fruit of our parish community. I pray that we may always see the blessing bestowed upon us through generosity of the generations that have gone before us in this parish and this marvelous school. It is not unusual for me to hear from parents and parishioners alike that they, their parents and now their children or grandchildren now attend this school. May you all have a wonderful and restful break, refreshed to take up again the challenges which education in its diversity lays before us all to make us richer characters and wiser citizens. God bless you all. Fr Eugene Ashkar (and of course Fonzie)

End of Term 3

Another busy term has flown by. A great deal of learning has occurred during this term, whether it was academic growth or personal growth, you would be hard

pressed to find a child who has not shown some amount of growth.

As we move into Term 4, the realisation occurs that many of our students will soon be taking that next step in their learning. Our ‘little’ Grade 2’s become ‘big’ Grade 3’s and our ‘big’ Grade 4’s become ‘bigger’ Grade 5’s. Every teachers’ wish is that they take with them what they have learnt thus far – resilience, perseverance, respect and self-belief. Talk like a Pirate Day in JP Ahoy! It was a surprise when Junior Primary arrived at school on Tuesday to find their teachers dressed as pirates celebrating “Talk Like a Pirate Day” The JP’s have been celebrating ‘Talk Like a Pirate’ day. We made pirate hats, created our pirate names, made parrots and read and wrote pirate stories. Streetscapes in MP As part of Middle Primary’s Inquiry unit ‘Money, Money, Money’, students have been learning about needs vs wants, budgets, expenditure and goods and services. Recently they have been making their own streetscape of businesses and are able to explain the goods or services their business can provide. Lots of paint, glue and creativity has been happening in our classrooms. The results are on display in our classrooms. I wonder who might visit a ‘Minecraft’ store or a ‘Slime & Squishies’ store?

District Sports Many students participated in District Sport last week at Kings Park here in Seymour. The effort from all children was excellent. Well done everyone on great results.

Science Week Science Week has come and gone again for this year and once again, it was a great success. Not only did students have the opportunity to play with and purchase many scientific toys and games, but also to have a science lesson specific to Science Week. Just look at these happy faces….

SMC Art Show 2017 The St Mary’s College Art Show is not too far away and our JP’s are completing their contribution during Art lessons this week. It will a spectacular display of talent and creativity. Everyone loves to see their work on display.

Keep an eye out for more details of the Art Show

Thank you As always, our job is made that much easier by the ongoing support of parents, grandparents, carers and classroom helpers. We appreciate everything you do to assist us and your child.

Until next term, continue to ACT JUSTLY, SHOW RESPECT and DO YOUR BEST. Stay safe over the holidays and be kind to yourself.

If you have any concerns or questions,

please don’t hesitate to see your classroom teacher or myself – you know I love visitors!

Our Positive Behaviour Goal for this term was:

‘Winners never quit and quitters never win’

As we come to the end of term 3, we would like to reflect back on the past week or so. We celebrated our learning on Friday at our Level Assembly with a variety of tasks. Our Senior Primary classes shared RE and Inquiry Posters and some Creative Arts objects they made. Our Year 7’s shared their Coraline work as well as some Anti-Bullying pamphlets for Health. Mrs Williams finished up Science Week with a puzzle for us to solve. Which tank would fill up first with water?

We congratulated our award winners.

They were: Joclyn Holslag, Claire Chisholm, Jordyn Beattie,

Ashlyn Graham, Hayley Reeves, Stohm Gabrielle, Skaife Brock, Eaknoor Sidhu, Aaron Becks, Lincoln Smith,

Logan Kaak and Tenisha Raymond.

Time To Shine is a singing and dancing show for all Catholic schools to come together and SHINE. It starts in 2018 and you have to be in Year 7 to do it. It helps you to also make new friends as well as perform. A few weeks ago, I auditioned in Melbourne and had to learn a short dance. Singers had to do the same. I then was told I made it through as one of the dancers. Kayla Bender (SP-G)

We would like to remind all parents and families that our Senior Primary students will be going away to Canberra next term from Monday 16th till Friday 20th October. Please check your CareMonkey for details about this camp. Any medical needs must be communicated to your child’s homeroom teacher prior to leaving for camp, as well as clearly stated on the forms. Any dietary requirements must also be indicated on the forms. All medication to be taken must be clearly labeled with your child’s name, dosage and in original package. We would like to thank all those parents who showed interest in coming along and volunteering their time and support. Unfortunately, we could only take 5 parents. We would like to welcome Glen Barry, Keiranne Speechley, Nedra Hammond, Clayton Munro and Genevieve Pearce along for the trip. We look forward to working with you to make this camp experience memorable for all students. These five parents will be asked to come in week 1 next term for a brief meeting on protocols and procedures. This is a remarkable camp for our students in which they experience many Civics and Citizenship issues. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is directly paid to the school upon completion of the camp.

Welcome: Our warmest welcome is extended to Jorja Roberts (SP-G) and her family who have recently joined St. Mary’s College community. Jorja has settled in well to College life.

We would like to wish all students and families a happy and safe holiday break. Stay happy and healthy

“If we had no winter, spring would not be so pleasant” - Anne Bradstreet.

There is no doubt that we have endured a long and wintery term. But just like the impending spring brings excitement and happiness, the last week of term offers us a time to take stock on all we have

achieved so far this year, and to start preparing for our final term of 2017. Well done to all of our Year 10 students who organised and catered for their Mentor Morning Tea on Monday. Food was plentiful (party pies in particular!) and the atmosphere was one of good cheer, even for a Monday morning! The mentor program has been hugely successful this year and this gesture by the students was a testament to the value they place on these important relationships in their final year at the College.

Secondary Social Our ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’ themed Social last Wednesday night was a roaring success and enjoyed by all. Flannelette shirts, footy shorts, thongs and fake tattoos were the flavour of the evening. Congratulations and thank you to our social leaders Mackenzie Spencer and Willem Eager who have carried out their role with enthusiasm and responsibility.

The money raised from this social will go towards funding the photo booth for our Year 10 graduation night. Our Year 8 students celebrated Medieval Day last Thursday. The students were led through an informative and hands on session by Lorenzo, who exposed them to different types of medieval armour and weaponry. The students had a great time re-enacting battle scenes. Thankfully, there were no injuries!

Our final Level Assembly for the term was jam-packed with all year levels showcasing recent events with slideshow presentations. Congratulations to our award winners from across many subject areas. Your hard work and dedication has been recognised:-
