I’ve been part-time Executive Director for the Maple Center for a little more than six months. Within that time has been a whirlwind of experiences from which I’ve come to appreciate the time and talents and passions of many, many people. We each have our individual strengths, and wow, do those strengths ever give this organization some power… Consider the Open House held back in September where over 100 people visited the Maple Center and toured the facilities and grand opening of the new classroom and John Black Memorial Library, and then our participation in the Komen Race for the Cure held in October. These are re-markable examples of the support for our mission to bring more and better mater-nal and integrative health services to the Wabash Valley. Amidst this, our pro-grams continue being delivered by capable and passionate professionals, and we are so excited about the influx of clinicians seeking to become part of the Maple Center family who are utilizing our space to provide their unique and effective form of therapy and healing. Of course, our involvement with Dr. Sang Huh at the Providence Medical Center and the Coleman Cancer Foundation Fund is exciting as it continues to develop momentum. Perhaps the most important event I am focused on is the creation and implemen-tation of a Strategic Plan for the Maple Center. Working with Dr. Charlie Potts from Indiana State University, we look forward to two half-day retreats at which members of the Advisory Board will take part in discussion and a decision-making process that will determine and refine our purpose, path and priorities. The out-come of this project will be critical in helping structure the direction and strategies used in grant-writing, resource allocation and program/event development. Speaking of grants, I wish to acknowledge the assistance of many people that provide information, assistance with writing and help edit. Examples of these suc-cesses will be elaborated on at the Annual Dinner. In conclusion…to each and every one of you, whether your contribution has been small and simple or large and complex, thank you – we couldn’t do what we do, we would not be what we are without you! Dear Friends and Supporters: Thank you for your support for all that has been accomplished through The Ma-ple Center in 2007. Our toddler steps are becoming more exploratory and surefooted as our world expands and we build on what we have previously learned. Our physical form has grown—with a new classroom at 1801 N 6th Street, the John Black Memorial Library, and new clinical space. To see the dream become reality has been thrilling. It truly does take a community—the accomplishment of this expansion took • Visionaries on the Board; • Dedication from the many labor union workers who donated their time for this commu-nity service project; • CDI and their project manager, Kevin Marlin; • Steve Arnold, local architect who donated the design work; • Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) donors whose funds bought materials; • Mary Huffman, Maternal Health administrator who wrote and administered the NAP grants; • Grant funds from The Oakley Foundation for the computers and projector; and Union Hospital’s Service League for the classroom furniture. Thanks to Union Hospital who is crediting the value of the improvements to their building to the building rent for the nonprofit and continuing to provide the space for the Library rent free as a joint offering. Hence, the rents that health care providers pay for their use of the space in the Clinical wing of The Maple Center come back to support the nonprofit activities. The winner is the people of the Wabash Valley who benefit from the offered programs. The breadth and number of programs offered grew, and they are detailed in the pages that follow. Collaboration with and funding through community partners was a criti-cal part of our success. 2007 saw Stacie Marlin continue to take the organiza-tion’s hand as our executive director and lead us forward as an able administrator and grant writer. Although her health chal-lenges have led her to cut back on time commitments, she contin-ues to generously volunteer by producing and editing the e-newsletter. We thank Peg Fisher for her work as our administra-tive assistant and wish her well in retirement. And we welcome Deborah McIntosh, our new program director, and David Howard, PhD our new executive director. We are excited about the future and hope that you will continue to be a supporter of our mission and activities. With warm regards, Kathleen Stienstra, MD, Board Chair 5

Program Director’s Letter

Dear Friends, It has been quite a year. I had just finished up the tax season and I was at home trying to figure out what to do next, when I received a phone call from Kathy Stienstra. She had spoken with Tom Jeffers who mentioned that I was looking for something to do. I agreed to come and meet with her the following morning. Upon speaking and learning about the Maple Center and all it was offering to the community, I knew it was going to prove to be a perfect match, but instead of becoming the Administrative Assistant, I was offered the chance to become the new Program Director. I accepted with a whole heart. Who knew one phone call would in three days change my life and bring such a joy, for not everyone is lucky enough to find the perfect place to work. It truly seemed that everything I had done and studied was moving me to be here at this place at this time. Since then I have seen the Maple Center grow, even more than in previous years. With the opening of the new Classroom and Dr. John Black Memorial Library, the addition of new community programs for women with breast cancer, and well as other behind the scenes growth in the office itself. Having myself seen what chronic health conditions can do to a person and their family and friends, I truly be-lieve that the services and programs offered at the Maple Center are an answer to a cry for help in our community, and I am honored to work for an organization that is providing these services. I look for-ward to the continuation of the programs started last year and addi-tion of many more this year. Sincerely, Deborah McIntosh Program Director 6

Programs for Breast Cancer Survivors

In 2007, The Maple Center was able to offer two very distinct programs for women with Breast Cancer. Coping with Stress and Yoga for Breast Cancer Survi-vors were facilitated by two wonderful instructors Dr. Suzanne Harris & Jan Croft. The participants enjoyed the comraderie of fellow survivors and the inte-grative and proactive approach offered by these pro-grams. We are please to be offering the programs once again in 2008.

“I have wanted to do Yoga for a long time, but felt too old and out of shape. When the class was offered at the Y-Me luncheon, I signed up. The class has been everything that I could ask for. Learning the breathing has made a difference in how quickly I can calm my-self. I feel less stiff and more motivated. And I have never felt out of place. The class has given me so many tools to work with. I am glad that it was of-fered and hope that more will follow.

Thank you for letting me share my experience with you.”

Community Parking Lot Sale

The Maternal Health

Clinic had its third Annual Parking Lot Sale on July 28th. We had the largest number of participating booths this year. The weather was overcast and a bit misty, but the spirits of those who attended were bright. The focus was on maternity, baby, and kids items, but there was much more for sale.

Besides making a little money for the clinic, we use this opportu-nity to let the public know of our location and our services. Dr. Kathy Stienstra, Anne Mishler, CNM, and Barbara Battista, PA were in atten-dance to provide that type of information. One of the greatest joys of our day is seeing past clients with their children, and of course it’s always nice to know that they enjoy seeing us too. The appreciation of the care that they were given was openly expressed.

Community Programming

Tai Chi for Health

The Tai Chi for Health Program has been received with a good level of support from the community – with several class offerings being wait-listed. The spe-cific Tai Chi for Health Program that we are using is an adaptation of the Tai chi for Arthritis Program used by many Arthritis Foundations around the world. The Pro-gram was developed by Dr. Paul Lam, an Australian Family Medicine doctor and world-class tai chi master. This 12-movement therapeutic form of tai chi is based on the Sun Style of Tai Chi and is relatively easy to learn when compared to the either the Yang 108-movement long-form or the Yang 24-movement short-form. The 12-movement form is also much gentler on the joints than s other styles of tai chi. This makes it more suitable for individuals with chronic health conditions. Recent evidence published by clinical research groups from around the world supports the observation that the shortened therapeutic forms of Tai Chi are as effective as the more traditional forms of Tai Chi in providing an additional tool for individuals with chronic illnesses. —Submitted by Roy Geib, PhD Doula Training Workshop Margy Fauber and Mary Huffman conducted a two day Doula Training

Workshop at The Maple Center on April 26 and 27. We were happy to have an energetic and dedicated group of women with caring hearts who joined us in this time of learning and shar-ing. Our group included a total of eleven women who came from Sullivan, Clinton, Terre Haute, Brazil, and one woman from Louisville, Kentucky. Nurses, student nurses, a massage therapist, stay-at-home moms, and women who just want to help women in labor brought to the

workshop experiences of birth and life. What an amazing group was present. Doulas have provided services in the Terre Haute area for over thirteen years, and it is exciting to see them be available to women in the surrounding areas of the Wabash Valley. Margy and Mary have been certified doulas and cer-tified doula trainers through DONA International since 1998. Women who com-plete a workshop such this have taken their first step toward becoming certified doulas. We plan to offer this training workshop again next year. 21

Community Grief Workshop Creating a Path Through Grief Using The Arts: Resources for the Brokenhearted Expressive art heals. Telling stories of our sor-rows and losses also heals. This workshop pro-

vided participants with practical experience in telling their stories using several expressive arts: music, writing, drawing, collage, guided imagery and expres-sive movement. It was a powerful day, filled with tears and laughter and the joy-ous energy of community-building. As an organizer of this event, I was gratified by its success --I saw it in the faces and heard it in the voices of those who have carried losses unexpressed, some for many years. As a participant, grieving the death of my youngest son the year before, I was profoundly and positively affected by the creative opportuni-ties to share my story with others, as well as being able to be a compassionate audience for their stories. I hope that we will be able to make this workshop an annual offering to the com-munity, and that in the future we draw participants who struggle to heal from all kinds of losses. —Submitted by Zann Carter

September 27th 2007 was a day to remember. The Maple Center opened our doors to over 100 guests from the commu-nity. We celebrated a wonderful afternoon as we were able to finally display the new Dr. John Black Memorial Library, Maple Center Classroom, and new office space to be offered in Suite 600. We were joined by Terre Haute Mayor Kevin Burke, repre-sentatives of the Chamber of Commerce, and members of the press as we celebrated all the advances made during the year.

What is a Doula?

A doula accompanies a woman in labor and mothers the mother, while taking care of her emotional needs throughout childbirth. A doula also provides support and suggestions for partners that can enhance their experiences of birth. Giving birth to a baby is so much more than a physical phenomenon; it engages parents-to-be in a transformational experience, a key life event full of emotion and meaning.

Maple Center Midwifery Annual Report We welcomed a new midwife,

Deborah Woolley, CNM, PhD to our staff in late August, 2007. She has brought with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. She and Anne now share the 24/7 call for the Maple Center plus routine call for Maternal Health Clinic patients. The midwives have attended 125 women in labor and birth over the past year. The midwives continue to offer women the low tech, high touch option for birthing care and are seeing an increase in the number of women requesting this option for labor/birth care. As always, we encourage the use of a doula support for labor/birth in addition to adequate preparation for birth including childbirth education. The Maple Center midwives are committed to providing supportive care in labor and working as a team with the doula and labor and delivery nurse. We are seeing an impact of our approach to care in the nursing care provided by some of the labor and delivery staff now. We continue to utilize alternative approaches to traditional obstetrical

care for our pregnant patients primarily referring for chiropractic care, yoga, Hypnobirthing, acupuncture and massage therapy. We continue to invite the FP residents to our births in hope that as we model family-centered care and insist on early bonding for mom and baby, we will make an impact on how our family medicine doctors will ultimately care for the families in their practices. The midwives continued to offer the Centering approach to prenatal care to our

patients both at Maternal Health Clinic and The Maple Center. Those who have chosen this option for care more often choose midwifery care and are better pre-pared for the birth as well as postpartum period. Well-woman gynecology care continues to be of-fered at The Maple Center. The number of women seek-ing gynecologic care by a midwife is stable in our practice with most of our birthing clients remaining in our service for this care also.

We are currently in the planning stage for a fall conference for expectant parents and parents of young children in our community. Our date has already been set for October 25, 2008.

Maternal Health Clinic

While many women can afford the wide-array of services available to them through the Maple Center and other area care providers, some expectant mothers in our community are in need of more assistance emotionally, physically, and financially. One of the nonprofit Maple Center’s pur-poses is to support the Union Hospital Maternal Health Clinic (MHC) which serves as the community safety net to assure that compassionate, family-centered prenatal and birth care is available to all pregnant women in the Wa-bash Valley regardless of financial status. Education of health care providers is part of our dual mission. Professional multidisciplinary care is provided by Sr. Barbara Battista, Physician Assistant, Anne Mishler and Deborah Woolley, Certified Nurse Mid-wives in association with the Resident and Faculty Physicians at the Union Hospital Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Kathleen Stienstra is the Medical Director and Dr. Robert Lalouche is the Obstetric Consultant. Additional care includes care coordination by so-cial workers Laura Dever, Nancy Haynes, and Maria DaSilva. Sub-stance abuse counseling is available from our Prenatal Substance Use and Prevention Program counselor Debbie Stevens. Nursing support include breastfeeding education by nurses Janett Allen and Stephanie Cloutier. Onsite sonography is performed by Michelle Hampton. Receptionist care is the responsi-bility of Tenna Lee and Nicole Page. The MHC manager and nurse is Mary Huff-man An incentive program offered in partnership with the Helping Hands or-ganization provides free items for our clients and their babies in recognition of developing and maintaining healthy behaviors. The innovative “Centering Preg-nancy” approach to care offers group prenatal care and education. Many of the Maple Center’s programs including Doulas, Belly Casting, Natural Childbirth Classes, and HypnoBirthing Classes are available for MHC clients for reduced fees. Together we are proud of the care and services that are given to our families. The extra time and touch means so much. A recent card of appreciation stated, “Thank you so much for taking care of me during both of my pregnancies. Everyone was truly helpful both times. You all took the extra step to listen to my problems." This is why we do what we do.
