Saunas May Give Your Heart a Healthy Boost
Getting hot and sweaty can release ‘happiness molecules’
AFP RELAXNEWS

A study has found that people with chronic heart failure who took five saunas a week for three
weeks enjoyed improved heart function and a boost in their exercise endurance. New research
reveals a surprising new therapeutic benefit to relaxing in a sauna; getting hot and sweaty can
not ony release “happiness molecules” but also help your heart.
This week British science magazine New Scientist reported on the research, which found that
people with chronic heart failure who took five saunas a week for three weeks enjoyed
improved heart function and a boost in their exercise endurance.
In the study, researcher Takashi Ohori and colleagues at the University of Toyama in Japan
asked 41 volunteers with heart failure to take a15-minute sauna five times a week. After the
sauna treatmeant, participants were asked to wrap themselves in blanket for 30 minutes to
keep their body temperatures about 1 degree Celsius higher than normal.
“Sauna treatment increased the heart’s ability to pump blood, and boosted the distance
participants could walk in 6 minutes from 337 metres to 379 metres,” wrote New Scientist.
The researchers also found improved function in the membrance lining the inside of the heart,
which plays a role in controlling the diameter of blood vessels. The findings were published in
the American Jounal of Cardiology.
Thanks to the increase in body temperatures, separate research has found that a sauna
treatment can trigger neurons in your body to release seratonin, resulting in a feel-good
sensation.

Saunas for Losing Weight
Getting hot and sweaty can release ‘happiness molecules’
WEIGHTLOSSFORALL.COM
There are many health benefits to using a sauna. This method of relaxation and health
maintenance has been in use for several thousand years, and cultures like the ancient Romans
and the Scandinavians recognized the advantages of a good, regular sweat. The mental and
physical benefits to using a sauna are plenty, and if you have the opportunity to use one, you
should take advantage of it.
Saunas cause your body to burn calories. Your sweat glands produce sweat, which requires
energy, and therefore increases caloric expenditure. Saunas should not be solely relied upon,
however, as a weight loss system.
When you take a sauna, you lose a great deal of fluids through the sweating. This might cause a
sudden loss of a few pounds, but it is only fluid loss. When you re-hydrate ( and you should take
in liquids before, during, and after a sauna) your body, the weight will return. There are certain
sports that require athletes to make a certain weight class in a very short period of time. These
athletes often use saunas as a means of rapid weight loss. Any type of weight loss through
dehydration is not safe.

Sauna Benefits for Your Immune System
IMMUNESYSTEMREMEDIES.COM
Some commonly known sauna benefits include improved blood circulation, enhanced
detoxificatoin processes, deep skin cleansing, and stress relief.
Saunas can boost your immune system by raising the body temperature and giving you an
“artificial” fever. Believe it or not, getting a fever is a good sign that your immune system is
working, helping to fight infection or eliminate viruses.
Raising your body’s temperature, (by including an artifical fever), helps kill bacteria and viruses
by increasing white blood cells, antibodies, and other disease fighting agents.
As your body works to lower its temperature, your immune system is “exercising”, and
therefore being strengthened.
This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes as a
result of increased perspiratin, will increase your immune system and reduce the stress put on
your bodies health.
Since many viruses do not survive well in environments which the temperature is higher than
normal body temperatures, constant use of a sauna can help kill them before they are allowed
to grow. At the very least, the sauna can help to reduce their growth rate, which will also make
the healing process faster, and prevent further infection.
In addtion, it is possible that damaged cells repair themselves quicker in fever conditions due to
an increase in metabolic rate. When fighting a cold, sitting in sauna also helps to open the nasal
passages, assist the sinuses to drain, and relieves minor respiratory discomforts.
Using the sauna does not mean you will never get sick, but repeated use can build your immune
system up.

To Sweat or Not to Sweat? Saunas and Detoxification

Toxins are everywhere, in the water, air, food, soaps, shampoos and even clothes. Toxins have
been directly linked with a host of diseases, cancer, lowered immune function, arthritis, autism,
fibromyalgia, alzheimers, neurological and cardiovascular disorders. It is a problem that is not
going away, that is why people need to detoxify. Sherry Rogers MD, in her book, Detox or Die, says toxicity is a one-way street leading to disease; the key to healint he impossible is to reverse
the toxicity.
There are several methods being used today: chelation, where enzyme preparations are
injected into the bloodstream, binding toxins as they pass through and are excreted; fasting,
with or without herbal and mineral preparations and/or colonics to help to remove toxins; and
saunas, removing toxins through sweating. Whereas the first two methods ar esuitable for
personse with a high degree of dedication and/or discipline, the infrared sauna method is one
that can be used easily and effectiely by almost everyone.
And it can be used in conjunction with the other methods of fasting, colonics and chelation.
Raymond Francis, in his books, Never Be Sick Again, states, “Saunas get your heart eating and
your blood circulation, hleping the body to detoxify in unique and important ways.”
Today, there are many types of sauna and steam available for almost any budget and location.
Some use converntional steam, some use heated rocks and others use efficient infrared
heaters. The effectiveness of the detox will depend on the type of heat chosen and the protocal
employed. In her book, Solme Like It Hot, Nicola Rajala describes the major difference between
the steam room and the conventional sauna.
Although the steam room feels hotter because of the high humidity, the body actually has a
harder time sweating because of the relatively low temperature (120 Farenheit). The water on
the skin is still very common today, but it seems to be losing ground due to the many
advantages of more substantial detox.
A study analyzing the chemical composition of sweat found that the sweat of partipants using
the box of hot rocks sauna had 95-97 percent water, while the sweat of those using an infrared
sauna was 80-85 percent water – the rest being composed of cholestoral, fat-souble toxins,
71
heavy metals (such as mercury and cadmium), sulfuric acid, ammonia, sodium and uric acid. In
the book, Beyond Antibiotics, Drs. Michael A. Schmidt et al. state the following: “Saunas are
being used by some doctors to stimulate the release of toxins from the bodies of their patients.
They have found that a lower temperature (105-110 Farenheit) sauna taken for a longer
duration is most beneficial. These low temperatures stimulate a fat sweat, which elimnates
toxins stored in fat, as opposed to the high temperature sauna, which encourages a water
sweat.”
As with any regimen, always consult with a doctor first, and it is important to start out slowly,
drink enough water, and take a good multi-vitamin and multi-mineral and to wash off any
sweat after the session to prevent toxins from being re-absorbed.
