O n 30 th  March, Beverley Randall received the Mayor’s Civic  Award for Voluntary Service for her contribution, over a number of  years, to Great Massingham. The  splendid occasion took place in the  King’s Lynn Town Hall where Bev was joined by almost forty other award winners from West Norfolk. She was nominated by myself, on behalf of the Parish Council, and  Ann Beardall, Head teacher of ‘Great Massingham & Harpley C of E Primary Schools’ Federation’, of which Bev is Chair of Governors. Extracts from our nomination and citations are as follows: ‘Beverley has been editor of Great Massingham’s monthly newsletter, The Mallard, for over ten years. In that time she has been responsible for publishing over 120 copies of the  paper, never failing to get The Mallard out on time. Simply meeting these commitments is extremely demanding but she has done much more. In her time as editor, she has over- seen the expansion of the paper and, with her husband’s assistance, has introduced colour  photographs, further enhancing the publication. In 2012, Bev with the help of Jill Whitmore, Chrissie Warnes and husband Geoff produced an eighty page booklet and wonderful display of ‘Massingham Memories’ to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  In 2014, Bev and Geoff created a display commemorating the start of the 1914 Great War and resi- dents’ memories of their relatives’ involvement during the 1914 –  1918 war.’...... ‘Bev has been a Governor at Great Massingham Primary School since 2006 and Chair of Governors since 2012. In 2013, she took the decision to be proactive and brokered a part- nership between Harpley and Great Massingham Schools at a time when stand alone small schools were becoming more vulnerable. With the partnership in place, she also took on the role of chair of Harpley’s governing body to ensure ‘joined -up thinking’. As Governor/ Chair of Governors she is exceptionally hard working, conscientious and hands-on. A tre- mendous help. Bev is also very wise in her chairmanship of the schools. She strongly  believes that a village needs its school and her actions have effectively afforded our little local schools some protection in difficult times. Mrs Beardall is very thankful for Bev’s strategic actions to protect the schools for both present and future children and believes  both the pupils and families of the two schools share the same view.’...... The whole evening demonstrated the wide range of voluntary work in our area and Bev’s contribution to Great Massingham has certainly made a difference to this strong, caring community in which we live. Very well done and thank you Bev. Andrew Bickerton.  The Mayor, Councillor Colin Manning,  presents the award to Bev.

Congratulations Bev!

On 30th March, Beverley Randall

received the Mayor’s Civic

‘Histry Bits’ CHARLIE CAWTHORNE

Flipping through the family archives the

other day, I came across this snippet

from the Norfolk Chronicle (undated,

but certainly from the early fifties).Charlie Cawthorne was a particular

friend of my father’s and highly intelli-

gent. I remember Dad saying that if

he’d been born in different circum-

stances he could have ended up as Prime

Minister. Older members of the village may well remember him:

“RETIREMENT OF MASSINGHAM TEAMMAN

After 45 years on one farm, 39 years of which were spent in the

employ of Mr. John Morton of Heath Farm, Great Massingham,Mr. Charles Cawthorne has just retired from active work.

A native of Massingham, Mr. Cawthorne started work at the

age of ten and, after a year or two with other employers, he

settled down to work with Mr. Betts (an uncle of Mr. Morton)

where he remained for the rest of his working life as a teamman.

Commencing work in the old days at 3am, he would leave

Massingham at 5am with a team of horses and a wagon, twice

a week, on a trip to Lynn market, arriving at Gaywood Ship for

breakfast. He received an extra shilling a day for this long jour-ney. The worst such journey he ever remembers was the one to

Lynn during the blizzard of March1916 when, every few yards,

he had to stop and wipe the horses’ blinkers before proceeding.

He also has many happy recollections of past events, such as

the festivities at the coming of age of his employer, and thewedding day and silver wedding celebrations.

Mr. Cawthorne has been happily married for 40 years, and dur-

ing that time was sexton at Massingham Church for 22 years.

This service to the community he had to give up on account ofsciatica and, as an appreciation of this long service to the

Church, he was presented by the parishioners with a clock and

scroll in 1933.”  David Miller

Gert & Daisy...... How are yew gitting on tergether?

We are pleased ter report we are both feeling much better and are now owt of our sick-

beds. This is why we cud not report larst toime. Thank you fer our cards, flars and get

well wishes.

We hev hed a note from one of our posh fans –  Mr Aldiss (yes, Aldiss!) –  he has givenus a few gud ol’ Norfolk words and meanings. Even we hev larnt summat. Here are a

few:- A dodman is a snail

A canker is a caterpillar

A pissamare is an ant

You larn summat new every day. Thank you Tim –  we will share a few more next toime.

Sid hed an invite to an Art Exhibition over in West Acre but he cudn’t go so we went

instead. We sneaked in and hed a luk. Blast there wud sum posh people there. Sum of

them pictures were a bit rude –  there wus bits of womens bodies on show –  we dint

know where ter luk. We wonder if the artist hed a model or just med it up. Maybe nexttoime we cud help him out and show him awl women don’t look the same and hev somethings the same size each side. We wus also impressed with the animal paintings with

the little ditties. We int too keen on modern paintings as we carnt allus work them owt

but there wus summat for everyone plus a noice glass of wine and sum crisps.

The littluns hev bin on holiday agin but as the weather is a bit better they ken gitowtside. We used ter spent awl day owtside when we wus little –  mostly cos mum

chucked us owt and sed cum back when thas dark! (not really).

Gert’s auntie is down ter stay for a bit and is making herself known in the village. She

went ter church one Sunday and met our luvly vicar and sum of the congregation. She

sed they wus all very friendly.

We hev agreed to help with the Church Fayre on April 9th but carnt report on that as we

hev to git this in by the 8th.

Not much news this toime as the deadline is early. Suffice to say that we are gitting ex-

cited abowt our holiday this year. Sid and Bert will be cumming with us so we’ll hev to

behave ourselves!  Dew yew keep atroshing til next toime - Gert and Daisy

Strollers ...... Walking from ‘Hel - houghton and back’

Our Easter Sunday walk was quite a challenge! No steep hills, raging blizzards or longdistances but getting everyone in the right place and at the correct time was like herding

cats in a sheep dog trial! Our lunch venue was Sculthorpe Mill. Our walk, a four mile

walk from Helhoughton to Sculthorpe Mill. It being Easter Day, the pub was extremely busy and our lunch was booked for noon. We were meeting three ‘Lynnites’ at Hel-

houghton so the Massingham Strollers 9.15am start was to ensure we were not late. By

9.30 we were two members short! Had they remembered to put their clocks forward …?Eventually the prodigal two were collected and off we set.

The weather forecast was for strong winds and heavy rain around lunch time. Storm Katie

was approaching! Would we make the Mill before it arrived? Fortunately we were shel-

tered most of the way; the sun was shining and everywhere was full of the promise of

spring. There are delightful walks in this part of Norfolk and we had the River Tatt to

accompany us. I would recommend this area for walking or driving. Charming churches andviews to surprise and delight. But do take a map! I had reconnoitred the route previously

but still managed to make a wrong turn. If Pete, who knew the area very well, and Ken,

who had been born and brought up in Helhoughton, hadn’t been with us we would have

ended up on the main road to Fakenham.

We actually arrived on time and met up with our non-walkers at the Mill. No sign of

Storm Kate but, instead, nice Katie, Peter and Carol’s grand-daughter, joined us with

great-grandson Jacob. We settled down to an excellent Sunday lunch just as the rain

came down - perfect! If you like a walk and enjoy good company with the prospect of

Sunday lunch in one the many good hostelries why not join us for our next walk? Next walk, Sunday 22nd  May - route and venue to be decided.  Andrew Bickerton

 WRAP AROUND CHILDCARE

We know there is a shortage of childcare provision in the area but, at present, we are

unable to offer before and after school childcare at school. The intention of this article isto try and ascertain how many people would use before and after school care if  we were

able to offer it. It would also be helpful to know how many people would like to use this

provision in the near future ie in the next two to three years.

This is all a bit ‘chicken and egg’ –  if we have enough interest we may be able to offer a

breakfast and after school club but we won’t know if we can offer this until we know

people want it and would be willing to pay for the service, therefore making it possible!

A breakfast club could run from 8am –  8.45am and an after school club could run from

3.20pm –  5.45 / 6.00 pm.

Costs would be dependent on the number of people using the service –  the more users

the lower the costs would be. We would need to be able to cover the cost of two mem-

bers of staff for one hour each morning and two and a half to three hours after school.

If you are interested in this proposal could you please complete the details below,

cut along the dotted line and return to the school (address above).

Answers will only be used to consider the viability of After School Care

and will not be considered an agreement to take up childcare.

Message to all Parishioners

Craft and ChatMondays 9th and 23rd May

from 2pm to 4pm,

In the Village Hall Bar

To Brexit or not to Brexit? –  that is the question!

Our votes (yours and mine) as we go to the Polls next month to decide whether the UKwishes to remain a member of the European Union will probably be the most important

vote we will make at the polls in our life time. It will affect all of us.

The stay in crowd say:Jobs We maintain trade relations with the continent and thereby secure jobs.

National Security "It is through the EU that we exchange criminal records and passen-

ger records and work together on counter-terrorism,"  National Financial Impact The UK's status as one of the world's biggest financial cen-

tres will be diminished if it is no longer seen as a gateway to the EU for the likes of US

 banks,

BUT the get out crowd say:

Jobs Control of our own borders means we decide how many immigrants come to the

UK  –   limit the numbers coming in and there will be more jobs available for those al-ready here.

National Security Unless we get out we leave the "door open" to terrorist attacks. Open

borders do not allow us to check and control people.

National Financial Impact Free from EU rules and regulations Britain could reinvent

itself AND there would be an immediate cost saving, as the country would no longer

contribute to the EU budget (£13bn)These are just some of the arguments. None of the above statements tells the full story

by any means but you can see my dilemma as there seems to be equally good arguments

on both sides of the campaign –  so who to believe and who is right? What to do?I’ve been pondering this conundrum and there is a big part of me, as a Christian, that

says  – stay with our friends in Europe; we are better, stronger together and surely we

should aim to be an inclusive nation, welcoming and willing to work with our brothers

and sisters across our borders in fellowship and love. Together we can form policies and

friendships that benefit everyone and are a beacon of light in the world. After all (on a

much smaller scale admittedly) that is what our group of ten churches are aiming to do

here  –   to see ourselves as one body of faithful people who help each other, work to-

gether, pray together, worship together and reach out together to our communities with

God’s love. We are about taking away boundaries –  not putting them up.But then someone remarked to me that if the EU were embedded in Christian Values that

would be fine but sadly it more often seems to be about grabbing at power and the self-

ish aims of individuals or individual nations.

So where does this leave us? To Brexit or not to Brexit? For me that is still the BIG

question! I shall now go off into a quiet room to pray about it and hope to hear God’s

still small voice guiding my hand as I place my X. Or should that be my ?

With Love, Revd Jane

WOWS Dress up for Purple Day!The WOWS (Women on Wednesdays) made good use of their weekly tennis coaching

session to promote Purple Day  –   Epilepsy Awareness Day. Wearing everything from purple hair bows to purple laces they even enjoyed purple cake at break time! The

Chocolate Easter Egg Hamper raffle raised over £100 for this worthwhile cause  –  con-

gratulations to the winner, Annie Lawton.

One in 103 people have epilepsy and 87 people in the UK are diagnosed with it every

day. Two members of the group have children with epilepsy so they have personal ex-

perience of the life-changing effects a diagnosis can bring.

Many thanks to the WOWS for their support and to others in the village who also bought

raffle tickets. Tennis ‘Women on Wednesdays’
