The Mallard Issue 279 December 2014
Fantastic, High Quality, Moving Event!
‘LEST WE FORGET’ What a wonderful
and moving
performance.
S ome very positive comments have
been received about this moving
event held in St Mary’s on the 7th and 8th
November. Andrew Bickerton writes:
A total of 132 people attended and the
magnificent sum of £676 was received in
donations. When we add the residue of
sponsorship receipts, we should be able to
donate around £900 to the Poppy Appeal.
Of course, there are many to thank.
First, and most importantly, all those who
made great sacrifices during that terrible
time of the Great War. We owe them more
than we can ever pay.
Secondly, our sponsors: Neale Davies,
Top Spec Roofing, Anglian Architectural,
Leicester Farm, Premier Fireworks, S & R
Reeve, Colin Whitmore, Listawood, Great
Massingham Parish Council, Screenprint
Studio, Outback Autos, Great Massingham
Village Hall and The Mallard.
Thirdly, all involved in the production
who gave of their time over many weeks
and endured the cold nights in St Mary’s
Church and my frequent amendments to
improve the final result.
I cannot omit the wonderful work done by
Geoff Randall. The exhibition in St Mary’s,
of WWI archives and memories associated
with Massingham residents, was superb.
Lastly, to all of you who managed to
tear yourselves away from your
warm homes and TV, thank
you for your generosity
and compliments. I hope it
will remain with you each
Remembrance Day to come.
If I had known it was
going to be so good
I’d have come on the
Friday night as well!

Streetlights
I thought I needed to comment about the four new streetlights
we now have down Weasenham Road. They look to me as if
they have been transported from King’s Lynn High Street and
do not look very rural at all.
This is the third different design of streetlight we now have in
the village - there were already the ones that are attached to
telegraph or electricity poles and the original stand-alone ones
that look like a village streetlight should look (my personal
preference).
I realise that the new lights are much more efficient in the use
of electricity but surely, in this day and age, you could have a
more efficient bulb to fit the older type of light.
I wonder what the fourth design of streetlight will be in this
mish-mash of lamps? Bob Nash

Wonder if we’ll git eny snow eny day soon? That hev bin very mild but a bit damp. Our

Sorry we hint got a lot of news this toime but most of what we wanted ter say we int

Hev a lovely Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year. Gert and Daisy
No thought of the month but a little joke to brighten up the dull days.
Two brooms in the cupboard decide to get married.
At the wedding the bridebroom said to the groombroom
‘We are going to have a little brush’.
The groombroom said,‘We can’t be, we haven’t even swept together’.
Maybe she had been sweeping around!

Mallard News
Every Little Helps!
Andrew is going to write a regular column
for the Mallard about biodiversity. A very
important subject that really should not be
ignored by any of us.
Can you remember when driving home on
a summer’s evening the windscreen would
be splattered with countless flying insects?
Can you remember when the sounds of the
cuckoo and turtle dove filled the late spring
air?
When was the last time you watched a spot-
ted flycatcher diving from branches busily
catching flies?
A recent study stated that 50% of the
earth’s species have been lost over the last
forty years. There are a number of probable
causes of this decline including destruction
of habitat, population explosion, pollution,
intensive farming and climate change but
there are ways in which we can all help to
maintain and improve the biodiversity
around us.
The biodiversity area created down
Weasenham Road in 2012 established a site
for meadow flowers and native woodland
flora but in many respects this is an isolated
oasis. Our gardens can also make a signifi-
cant contribution to the natural world
around us. Here are a few ways that you
can make your garden a more friendly
place for wildlife:
Don’t mow, let it grow. Cut your grass less
frequently and leave areas for daisies, dan-
delions and buttercups to grow.
Leave rough areas under hedges and
around trees and shrubs. They will become
a haven for many forms of insects and
small mammals
Plant flowers for bees and butterflies
Leave berries on hedges and shrubs for the
birds. Compost grass, leaves and vegeta-
bles and use later as a mulch
Use peat-free compost for tubs and bas-
kets. You can improve it with plant food
granules and it works just as well as peat.
Avoid using dangerous chemicals such as
herbicides and limit the use of pesticides.
There are environment friendly alterna-
tives.
Create a log pile and let it rot. Beetles will
be very grateful. The more of us who be-
come wildlife friendly in our gardens the
better for the environment.
Every little helps!

Seasons Greetings from Gt Massingham Youth Club
The whole team at Youth Club want to take this opportunity to thank all the young peo-
ple and parents, the Parish Council and the Social Club/Village Hall Committee who
continue to support us.
We regularly have 28-40 young people participating in club activities which means that
club is noisy and busy. The atmosphere is positive, happy and energised .
We programmed some new activities in the summer with Archery, Nerf Games and Table
Tennis coaching. All of these were very successful and we will be re-visiting these
activities in the better weather next year.
Recently we have been asked by the youngsters to have a ‘Pyjama Party’ evening, a
toasted marsh mallow/firepit and sparkler evening as well as badge making, Netball ,
and Zumba. All these activities have had great feedback from club members.
Over the next few weeks we are planning various Christmas activities leading to an end
of year/Christmas Games night on Tuesday December 16th. We then close until January
20th 2015. (If there is ice/snow then we may postpone the date by a week)
Our Youth Club adult volunteers are fantastic and regularly turn out to ensure that this
vital community provision continues. However, we always need a little extra flexibility
within the staff rota to cover people having wedding anniversaries / holidays and hospi-
tal appointments so, if you were thinking about doing something different in the new
year, please come and volunteer with us. We need people with a clear police record and
who can relate to young people appropriately.
As DBS checks need to be undertaken ( old CRB checks) I am hoping that as part of
your New Years resolutions you might contact me to offer your help and plan dates to
meet in early 2015 so that we can complete the necessary DBS forms.
There will be no cost to you as we will pay for the checks out of club funds. The DBS
paperwork takes about 20 minutes to complete per person and is done one to one.
Supervision roles in club may involve playing board games, making cakes, doing arts
and crafts, dodgeball, chase/tag games, relay and team activities, pool, tennis, basketball,
football and table tennis etc. You may be really happy to participate in these activities
so, if you are, please get in touch. We are always interested in developing our programme
too so, if you have a skill or a gift to share, again please contact us.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy Christmas from us all.

Mallard News
Christmas Message from our new ‘Associate Priest’, Reverend Judith Pollard
Advent, the first season of the Church’s Year, is a season of signs and wonders, the most
overtly prophetic season in the year. In the weeks leading up to Christmas are contained
light and dark, joy and patience, sorrow and revelation. It is the season where we watch
and wait in joyful anticipation for the coming (or advent, from the Latin) of Christmas.
Like Lent, Advent is a time for self-reflection. It is the season where we are encouraged
to prepare our hearts and minds for the gift of God to humanity of his son Jesus Christ,
to be the Saviour of the World.
It is a time of increased activity in Church and community, a time of special services:
Nativity and Crib services, Christingle and Carol Services; and community fundraising,
fellowship and hospitality, neighbourliness, gift-giving and generosity.
Be prepared! This is the abiding motto of the worldwide Scouting movement and of the
World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Be prepared; in Scouting this could
mean anything from not forgetting an umbrella to offering life-saving first aid. It means
always being in a state of readiness - in mind and body. This is what the season of Advent
asks of us as Christians.
In this centenary year of the First World War, I am reminded of the poetry of Wilfrid
Owen: “Our brains ache in the merciless iced east winds that knive us, wearied we keep
awake because the night is silent... worried by silence sentries whisper, curious, nerv-
ous, but nothing happens.” The waiting is intolerable.
There are, of course, many different kinds of waiting and the outcome may inform the
character of the waiting and perhaps help us to get through challenging times. We need
to continue with hope.
During Advent, Christians go back to that time of waiting as the Bible shows it to us. We
read again the prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Old Testament. We read
about how people were longing for an end to slavery, yearning to no longer be in exile,
longing to be at home with God again longing for reconciliation. And all of this is ex-
pressed in the most powerful metaphors, especially in the prophecies of Isaiah; meta-
phors about the desert blossoming and about day dawning after a long, long night.
Scripture tells us: “Now is the moment for you to wake from sleep, for salvation is
nearer to us than when we first believed.”
This Advent let us remember our Christian calling as redeemed people, full of hope and
love. “Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.”
Let us share together in this great festival of Christmas and join together in bringing the
Gospel of Jesus Christ to a waiting world! Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the
new-born King, Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled... With the
angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem, Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory
to the new-born King!
A very happy and blessed Christmas to you all, Reverend Judith

Samaritans Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal
A marvellous result! We have collected 105
filled shoe boxes this year. On Sunday the
Lord Bishop of Norwich blessed the boxes on
their way and the children who will receive
them. Thank you all for the time taken to make
a child happier this Christmas. We have
also paid money to Samaritan's Purse to
cover all shipping costs. In the New Year I
will be informed of the countries where
the boxes were delivered. Very many
thanks again. Margaret Bowes

Parish Council Thanks
The Parish Council would like to record
and express its congratulations to all who
took part in the World War One event in
the Church.
Thanks go to all those involved, from
sponsors to performers.
Special mention should go to Andrew
Bickerton for conceiving the idea and
bringing it to fruition and, also, to Geoff
Randall for organising and presenting the
static exhibition at the back of the Church.
The performances in front of appreciative
audiences held over the two nights brought
great credit to all participants and served
as a timely reminder that we must never
forget the sacrifice of others.
Many thanks. Vic Cross, Chairman,
Great Massingham Parish Council.
