Much time and effort has been put into thisstatewide event for folk dancers to be recognized. We are counting on your cooperation to finalize thisfree event to promote folk dancing. See you all in Fresno.
Fran Ajoian, President
International Folk Dance Weekend is coming up - November 12-14 is just around the corner! I trustthat everyone who loves dancing is setting aside the whole weekend for folkdancing. We can treat it likea folk dance camp weekend with all of California as our campus! Instead of strolling from one gym ordance hall to another, we can drive from one town to another, from dawn to midnight, enjoying differentdance events in almost every county throughput the state. The calendar of events is growing, so be sureto check the November issues of Scene as well as our folkdance hotline (310-478-6600) for the latest updateas you plan your "camp" weekend.
Of course, everyone who's anyone will be at the culmination of this fantastic weekend - theScholarship Ball, set for Sunday, November 14th from 1 to 5. It will be held at Poinsettia Park in WestHollywood, immediately following our Council Meeting. Many of the true devotees will follow me outto Agoura for a bang-up afterparty at the Corfu Island Restaurant!
While you're reserving dates, mark March 17-20 on your 1994 calendar. The brand new SouthernCalifornia Folkdance Camp at Julian is in the works. It promises to be a wonderful four-day weekend, chock full of fun, folkdancing, and a touch of fantasy! Happy dancing.

If you've been remembering the PRESIDENTS1 INTERNATIONAL GRANDBALL of two years ago and wishing the event could be repeated, take heart. In response to very favorable reports of a mostpleasant evening of dancing and fellowship, plans are afoot foranother such event November 20, 1993.
As participants entered the auditorium that was softly lighted, itwas a nice approach and it was indicative of a special event. Then being seated at small tables complete with tablecoth andcandlelight added to the festive mood. Hearing one of yourfavorite waltz tunes made your toes impatient and many availedthemselves of some free style waltzing before the floor becamecrowded.
Another special party touch was being enthusiasticallyand invited to join old friends or make new ones.
we 1 corned
Special efforts are being made to offer a program varied enough toplease everyone. The Committee keeps in mind the fact that sinceformal or semi—formal dress is encouraged what could be moreappropriate than swaying with the rhythm of a melodic waltz in along flowing gown? If you ladies have in the past purchased adressy fashion that you rarely wear but often gaze at longingly, now is the time to bring it out and dazzle the multitudes.
The most appropriate costume of course is an authentic folk dancecostume. So many European and other countries feature a costumeworn at State functions. Let us enjoy it with you as you join usNov. 20, 1993.
Different countries have been featured in our theme andrefreshments are planned to emphasize these unusual treats.
Your response following previous balls has been very encouragingand it would be a real delight to have you back again. If youfeel this way, surprise us and volunteer to serve with us on theCommittee. We want this to become a periodic affair and we keepneeding to add" new blood and new ideas .

La Salamandre(France)
La Salamandre (lah sah-lah-MAHNDR) is a couple dance from Alsace. The name probably derived from"Alamander" or "Alaman." Germain Hebert learned the dance from Solange Denni at the Heritage '88International Festival, Cornwall, Canada. Germain presented the dance at the 1992 North-South Teacher'sSeminar and again at the 1993 University of the Pacific Folk Dance Camp.
