Letter to the Editor

Thanks to CSM

I am very proud of the high distinction with which CSM honored me at thecommencement ceremony, December 2002. I have accepted the Mines Medal with greathumbleness for two important reasons. First of all, I think that my merits are small incomparison to the unwavering trust and loyalty that CSM has ever evoked to ouruniversity since the beginning of our cooperation. I have gained personal friends who notonly helped me with the solution of problems but have also become an enriching part ofmy life. I want to express in public my immense gratitude to my dearest friend at CSM,Dr. Ramona Graves. Without her support, all my earnest intentions and goodwill for ourcooperative agreement between the two universities would have failed.

The second reason is a very personal one. Having been born during a terrible war, raised inthe period of Cold War and grown older in a period of ever-increasing and escalatingterrorism, I have never stopped dreaming the dream of a scientific community that, withmutual tolerance and solidarity, mobilizes its intellectual capacity only for the well-beingand not for the destruction of our world. Who else but the young scientific community iscalled to allow reason to prevail and to curb destructive hatred and intolerance betweencultures and nations?

The medium for intolerance and growing hatred is lack of knowledge paired withignorance. I consider the cooperation with CSM to be a small seed sown for a betterunderstanding between young academics of the United States and Austria. I am pleased tonotice that this seed has borne rich fruit. Approximately 50 students from Leoben havestudied at Mines and an equal number of Mines students have studied in Leoben. Inaddition, there have been many visits between petroleum engineering, as well asenvironmental science and engineering, faculty.

I sincerely hope that CSM will continue to cultivate the partnership with the University ofLeoben in the effort to broaden the horizon of the next generation of engineers for thepurposes of a better world.

Maintenance and Repair Welding in the Open Sea

With the exploration ofenergy resources

pushing into the oceans,engineering structures foroil and gas exploration,production, processing,and transport are acommon scene today onocean waters. Thesestructures exist in theshallow waters of the Gulfof Mexico, off the Braziliancontinental shelf, in theIndian Ocean, off-coastWest Africa, and in thedeep, rough waters of theNorth Sea. In the lower 48states of the U.S., sub-seaproduction of oil and gas ismainly concentrated in theGulf of Mexico. More than4,000 offshore platformsand many FPS (FloatingProduction Systems) andFPSO (FloatingProduction, Storage and Offloading) vesselscurrently operate in the Gulf.

Operation and maintenance of these structures andvessels have become significant to the industry.

Repairs of these facilitiesare necessary due tocorrosion, storm loads,damage by vessels, andfatigue; underwater wetwelding is becoming morerecognized as a viabletechnology.

Wet welding is oftenpreferred over dry(hyperbaric) weldingbecause it can be mobilizedquickly and easilycompleted in areas whereconstruction of a physicalhabitat is impossible.Above all, wet-weldingrepairs can be performed ata significantly lower costthan hyperbaric welding.For the replacement ofhorizontal K-bracemembers, dry habitatwelding is likely a multi-million dollar project,whereas wet welding couldbe accomplished at a

fraction of the cost. To date, successful wet-weldrepairs have been conducted to around 100 m deep water.

Stephen Liu PhD Met ’84 studied the rutile-gradeconsumables for wet welding to explore whether steelwet-weld microstructure could be modified from acoarse grain boundary, polygonal ferrite to acicularferrite. Beginning in the 1990s, Liu further characterizedthe rutile-grade electrodes and the oxidizing-gradeelectrodes. He established joint industry researchprograms (JIP) with companies including Shell, Exxon*,Mobil*, Amoco*, Texaco, Chevron, Marathon, U.S. Navy,MMS, and Global Divers (* prior to their respectivemergers). Global Divers & Contractors was co-principalinvestigator in the 1990s JIP.) The overall goal of thoseprograms was to further elevate the quality of the wetwelds. Specific tasks targeted microstructural refinement(90 percent fine acicular ferrite), hydrogen mitigation(below 20 ml/100g), and porosity minimization (below 1percent). The effects of consumable compositionadjustment were carefully examined.

So far, 10 research students (PhDs, MSs, an exchangestudent from Delft University and a high school student)have performed wet-welding research at CSM. Currentresearch programs involve international participationfrom the United States (MMS, CSM-CWJCR), Mexico

(IMP/PEMEX), and Brazil(UFMG). The Braziliancollaborator, AlexBracarense PhD Met’94 (UFMG), is alsoinvestigating wet-welding behaviorin fresh water andthe fracture mechanicsof wet-weld specimens.

For the quality research in underwaterwet welding and the practical applications ofthe technology, Liu’s research program was recognized asone of the top 25 Major Engineering Achievements inthe construction world by McGraw-Hill ConstructionInformation – Engineering News-Record in 1997.

Despite the serene environment andattentive look of the colorful fish,which often participate as nature’sobservers, welding underwater is notan easy task. The arc (at over10,000oK) is exposed to the water,which decomposes into hydrogen andoxygen! These two elements areabsorbed into the molten steel (ataround 2000oC), a whopping 2000ppm of oxygen and 100 ppm ofhydrogen. [As reference, a qualitystructural steel weld would havearound 300 ppm oxygen and less than5 ml hydrogen per 100g metal.] Assuch, steel wet welds are expected tocontain porosity and experiencereduction in ductility and toughness.With the cessation of the arc, the coldwater splashes on the weld causing afast cooling rate and increases in thestrength of the weld and excesshardness in the weld heat-affected

zone. Porosity also increases with water depth and pressure.Typically, wet welds are classified as Class B welds according toANSI/AWS D3.6 specification.

CSM’s Center for Welding, Joining and Coatings Research(CWJCR) has in the past two decades gained worldwide renownas the leading expert in underwater wet welding technology. Partof the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department,CWJCR has conducted multiple joint industry researchprograms on the utilization of wet welding in repair of offshorestructures. CWJCR researchers apply fundamental engineeringprinciples and materials knowledge to understand the problemsassociated with processing underwater and develop technologiesthat can resolve the several key issues of wet welding mentionedearlier.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, CSM professors David L. Olson,Glen R. Edwards Met E ’61, and David K. Matlock investigatedthe mechanical performance of wet welds as compared with dryhabitat welds. They determined that when uniformly dispersed,fine pores actually pinned the fatigue crack front, retarding itsgrowth rate. In the late 1980s, professors Olson and

I wondered, “How big does this proposalneed to be?” We women of Mines hadspent a short time talking about theirneeds, and already we had identified morethan any one group, agency or evengovernment could accommodate. Theyneed everything. Start with electricity,water, plumbing and heat. Buildings withroofs, chairs to sit on, desks to write at.Paper and pencils, for heaven sakes! Books,teachers and schools. Food! Clothes,blankets, beds. Roads. Hospitals, doctors.The elimination of landmines so thatdigging out and building a nationalinfrastructure can begin with relativesafety. Safety! Yes, enough security thatthey can begin to build a government forindustry and services.

And another question, “How are we goingto communicate with them after theyleave?” The women can access only onecomputer in Kabul. The city provides justtwo hours of electricity per night.Connecting to the Internet costs $5 aminute. This is a city where an engineerand government worker combined mightmake $60 a month. There are no phones,no phone lines! There is no postal service!No way to reach them.

It came time for our guests to leave. ShirinJahn and I were not finished. I wanted topromise something. I wanted to say, “I amso sorry. I want so much to help.” I didn’twant to let Shirin Jahn go. I might neversee her again.

Shirin Jahn’s eyes radiated with love and asolemn knowing. She had to leave. She and all of the women looked drained; theystruggled to keep to their demandingschedules. We hugged one another notknowing if we would have a futuretogether. We kissed cheeks again and again. As they left, I silently vowed tomyself, “Never, never will I forget you,Shirin Jahn!” ❦❦❦❦❦

It is my great hope that this was thebeginning for us. We have alreadyestablished that we are sisters of the world. The School helped to makeconnections between these wonderfulwomen and two other interested groups:JDA, created 11 years ago by alumnus Bob Hedlund Bsc Min ’75, and the CSMstudent chapter of Engineers WithoutBorders. We continue to facilitate suchconnections and to support these twogroups in their endeavors, which hopefullywill include Afghanistan. We will nurtureour relationship with the IIE, which helpedsponsor the women’s visit to our campus,and we hope to collaborate with the IIE ona proposal for the future.

For the past year a small group connectedto Mines has been exploring positiveaction to help Afghanistan. We hope tocontinue this effort. From this recent visitwe would like to explore the feasibility ofprojects including student/teacherexchanges, scholarships, a relationshipwith Polytechnic Institute in Kabul,provision of educational materials, loan of engineers and mining consultations.

We will look for ways to involve thebroader community when the time is safeand appropriate, and when we are assuredthat our efforts will, in fact, reach thepeople we want to support. In themeantime, I hope that our governmentwill continue to bring security toAfghanistan until the country hasestablished a safe and free government of its own.

Four women from Afghanistan came to theColorado School of Mines last fall, a specialdeparture from their 12-day official visit toDenver. They were members of a delegation of 18 women who came to the United Statesfor training and development work as part ofthe initial project of the U.S.-Afghan Women’sCouncil, established in January 2002 andsponsored by the U.S. State Department and Institute ofInternationalEducation (IIE).Before coming toDenver, they met anddined with PresidentGeorge Bush, as wellas Secretary of StateColin Powell. At Minesthey spent time withwomen faculty, staffand students. Theywere greeted by thepresident of the School,John U. Trefny, andthe president ofINTERLINKLanguage Centers,Ahad Shahbaz, both of whom then left the women to theirinformal discussions.The men later joinedthe group for dinner atthe president’s home.Also invited to dinnerwere two members ofthe board of the non-profit organizationJoint Development Associates, Inc. (JDA),Tim Steadman and Jim Ogg Geol E ’52.A complete list of individuals who attended the discussion/dinner appears at the end of this article.

After the main course, we retired to theliving room for dessert and coffee. Takingme aside, Shirin Jahn [not her real name]grasped my hands. She wanted me to seewhat could not be expressed through an

interpreter. Shirin Jahn’s eyes riveted myattention as she flashed through scenesthat will engage me forever. I will neverforget her eyes, pupils dilating andcollapsing as she spoke. Each blinkbrought a change of scene, and her eyessizzled anew like lightning cracklingthrough the sky.

“These eyes have seen,” Shirin Jahn began,“just this month, the terror of bombs,bodies flying, children lying dead in poolsof blood in our streets. I have heardmothers screaming for loss of theirchildren. I watched women fleeing from

beatings, mutilations, rapes, humiliations perpetrated by insane men.” Pop! Her eyesplayed out the madness of theseunspeakable acts.

“These women come to me,” she said.“Every day they form a line of starvingmothers begging to feed their children.”Shirin Jahn’s eyes portrayed a sadness soprofound I wanted to weep. “I can only

cry with them, for I have nothing tooffer them but my tears.”

“Sharon,” she said,squeezing myhands, “please, donot forget us.” Hereyes softened withhope. I held mybreath, afraid shemight feel mydespair, myweakness in notknowing how tohelp. “Please, neverforget who we are,and that we came toyou.”

Zap! Shirin Jahn’seyes snapped dark,

not angry butdetermined to makeme understand. “Wehave shared all thatwe have need of withyour government,”

she said. “They have told us to go away, towrite a proposal, then come back and thenthey can help us.” She searched my facewith penetrating eyes that asked: Could webelieve what they said? Who would help usto make them remember these promises?

They came to Colorado for only 12 days tolearn how Americans write grants, to learnEnglish, to learn computer skills, to learnhow we do things. The women are verysmart and they will learn to write aproposal by the time they return toAfghanistan.

Nobel Laureate Visits Campus

Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Leon M.Lederman discussed “Science andSimplicity” at Mines in October.“The more we learn about theworld, about nature, the originand evolution of the universeand the fundamental particlesand forces, the more simple andelegant it all appears,” heexplained.

Lederman, awarded the 1988Nobel Prize in physics for hiswork on neutrinos, is the

Phi Gamma Delta fraternitymembers hosted a Halloweencelebration for the Children’sDiabetes Foundation at Denver.Approximately 350 partygoers, both

parents and children ages 6 to 8,filled Friedhoff Hall in the School’sGreen Center. The event is an annualphilanthropic project for thefraternity.

Tschatschula Keynotes MidyearCommencement

CSM Board of Trustees memberTerrance G. Tschatschula was thekeynote speaker at midyearcommencement ceremonies Dec. 13in Bunker Auditorium in the Green Center.

More than 250 degrees – includingbachelor’s, master’s, doctoral andprofessional degrees – were awardedat the ceremonies.

Two honorary degrees were awarded.

■ Dr. William L. Fisher holdsthe Leonidas T. BarrowCentennial Chair in MineralResources in the Department of Geological Sciences at theUniversity of Texas in Austin. Heis a respected expert in resourceassessment, energy research

and development policy, andenvironmental resources.

■ Admiral Richard H. Truly isdirector of the Department ofEnergy’s National RenewableEnergy Laboratory in Golden.NREL is the nation’s premierlaboratory for renewable energyresearch, development anddeployment, and a leadinglaboratory for energy efficiency.He is also executive vice presidentof the Midwest Research Institute.Retired as a vice admiral after aNavy career of more than 30years, Truly has had anextraordinary career, notable forits many years of public service.

Two Mines Medals were awarded:

■ Frank Erisman Met E ’65 is aleader in maintaining the School’slong tradition of excellence. Heserved for nine years on the

School’s Board of Trustees,which elected himpresident from 1996through 2002. He was alsochair of the President’sCouncil and is currently a member of theFoundation Board ofDirectors. Erisman is apartner in the Denver-based law firm ofHolme Roberts &Owen LLP.

■ Dr. BrigitteWeinhardt is theSecond Vice Rectorof Montanuniversitat Leoben(MUL) in Leoben, Austria. Shehas been instrumental in buildingan effective partnership betweenMUL and CSM that has created astrong exchange program for bothundergraduate and graduatestudents. She is the first woman

elected to a vice rectorposition since MUL was establishedin 1840.

An ROTC team from Colorado School ofMines and University of Colorado atBoulder took first place at the 18th

According to Kiplinger’s, theirexclusive survey of more than 500U.S. public colleges and universitiesreveals great schools with reasonableprice tags from coast to coast.

Researchers Receive $5 Million Grant

Mines researchers recently received a$5 million, five-year grant from theOffice of Naval Research for aMultidisciplinary UniversityResearch Initiative (MURI) to studythe fundamental chemistry and

physics of direct-oxidation fuel cells,which can use hydrocarbon fuelssuch as natural gas directly.

MURI is a program designed toaddress large multidisciplinary topicareas representing exceptionalopportunities for future Departmentof Defense applications andtechnology options. CSM is the leadinstitution, but shares the grant withthe California Institute ofTechnology and the University ofMaryland.

The Colorado governor’s Office of Energy Management andConservation (OEMC) hasannounced the funding of a centerto enhance energy-related researchand educational programs for the state.

The Colorado Energy ResearchInstitute (CERI), housed at CSM,will work with the public, the state’suniversities, government andindustry to ensure adequate energysupplies at a reasonable cost foradvanced energy related technologyand policy issues affecting domestic,agricultural and industrial use.

CERI will also lay the groundworkfor Colorado and CSM to elevatetheir leadership in energy policy andtechnology development.

Initial funding for CERI includes a $225,000 grant from the OEMC,with matching funds from the School.

CERI’s goals include the following:

■ Facilitate economic developmentrelated to the energy industries,while also promoting energyconservation

■ Support technology partnershipsbetween industry and highereducation in the state, as well asaggressive commercialization ofideas and inventions

■ Create an “Energy Prize” tostimulate innovative technicalsolutions, encompassing bothconservation and new energytechnologies

■ Host forums, workshops andconferences to provide specializededucation in energy issues forpolicy makers at local and state levels

■ Create an information databasefor use by local and state officialsfor informed decision-making onlegislation and regulation

■ Conduct outreach activities toinform the Colorado electorateon energy matters.

Originally, CERI wasestablished in 1974 at Mines by theColorado Legislature. In turn, it wasinstrumental in attracting to Goldenthe Solar Energy Research Institute,now the Department of Energy’sNational Renewable EnergyLaboratory.

“The energy expertise at Mines andat Colorado’s other researchuniversities – coupled with thepresence of the National RenewableEnergy Laboratory in Golden –affords a unique opportunity for thestate to become a national leader inthe development of energy policyand technology,” says CSM PresidentDr. John Trefny.

Music Program Finds Home

CSM has a new music house. “TheLiberal Arts and InternationalStudies (LAIS) Music House at 16thand Elm is a most welcome homefor the music program, creating anexcellent learning and music practiceenvironment for students,” said LAISDirector Arthur Sacks. “The househas also helped to establish a cleareridentity for the program. We believethis to be a wonderful investment,and we are grateful to all those in theadministration who have helpedmake this dream a reality.”

The Mines Administrative FacultyCouncil has announced the

awarding of the first Family ofMines Scholarships.

The council started this programlast year to provide scholarships tothe children of Mines employeeswho are undergraduate studentshere, according to Carol Chapman,chair of the scholarship committee.

CSMAA Forging New Partnership with School

Dear Fellow Mines Alumni and Friends of the School,

A few years ago, the CSM Alumni Association commissioned amanagement study to look at the way our organization goes aboutits business. It was a lengthy report and, some might say, a surecure for insomnia. However, that report contained some goodobservations and made some excellent points. Unlike manysimilar reports, something good – no, great – is actually comingabout because of it.

An eye-opening finding of the so-called Miller Report was that inthe community of Mines, the Alumni Association had no “place atthe table.” We were perceived as being “over there” somewhere interms of how the rest of the campus community thinks andfunctions. At the same time, the School has had no clear vision ofan alumni-relations program.

Before us lies an exciting and unique opportunity to help expandand improve alumni relations at Mines. We are in the process ofworking with CSM President John Trefny and his administrationto define a partnership that will create a closer workingrelationship between the Alumni Association and the School so wecan do a better job of maintaining lifelong connections to ouralumni and friends in a more effective fashion.

A task force consisting of representatives of the AlumniAssociation and the administration has been working on thispartnership for almost a year. The task force is modeling thispartnership on a joint venture in which two independentorganizations create a third organization to achieve a commongoal. The Alumni Association will remain an independentorganization with its own Board of Directors, but will partnerwith the School to create and carry out a comprehensive plan foralumni relations.

During the past few years, the Association has undergone adramatic change in the way it views itself and the community towhich we belong. It began with the management studycommissioned by CSMAA President Mary Pott BSc CPR ’83,continuing with the Umbrella Committees coordinated byPresident Dick Beach Geol E ’66. This process was advanced bythe strategic plan spearheaded by President Vicki Cowart MScGeop ’77, and resulted in a comprehensive business plan unveiledunder President Ed Crabtree EM ’60.

The power of the thinking and creativity that went into thatprocess is truly awesome. From it emerged a revised missionstatement for CSMAA and renewed understanding of theimportance of our contributions to our constituencies: the

students, the School and its administration and faculty, and thealumni. We developed a business plan featuring what we do, whywe do it, how we do it, and what it costs to do it. A vision ofopportunity to further enhance the quality and reputation ofMines and its alumni became clear.

At the same time, the School has begun the process of developing astrategic plan for the new millennium. A lifelong commitment toits students is a main feature of the administration’s vision. TheSchool recognizes the importance of a strong and effective alumnirelations program for the continued success of our alma mater.

The Alumni Association and the School were headed in the samedirection. Our paths came together and we jointly undertook thechallenge to work together. We found that we could – and were –already working together on several fronts including jointpublication of Mines, cooperative operation of the alumni andfriends database, and establishment of the Alumni AdmissionsRepresentative program. Other examples of things we do togetherare not hard to find.

So what does this mean for the Alumni Association? In short, itmeans opportunity. We now have an opportunity to have a “placeat the table.” We have an opportunity to help guide the School’sdirection as together we create a new program for alumnirelations – a program that is bigger, better, more effective and isresponsive to the needs of the students, the School, and thealumni. We have an opportunity to participate directly in shapingthe future of the Colorado School of Mines.

The process continues. As of this writing, the task force hasmolded a basic plan for affiliation, most of which has beenwelcomed by the appropriate representatives of each body. Whilenothing is set in concrete and the proposal currently before thetask force still has a few key points to be resolved, I remainoptimistic that the Alumni Association and the School will findthe common ground on which to improve their relationship and,ultimately, to fulfill the missions of each organization.

In the coming months, as president of CSMAA, I will be lettingyou know more about this partnership. I am excited about thiswonderful opportunity we have and ask that you share myenthusiasm for our future. I am looking for a better Mines in thefuture and I’ll bet all of you are, too. This is our way of helping tomake it happen.

Earthquakes, landslides and volcanic eruptions are natural events with destructive potential.Roelof Snieder and John Scales, professors ofgeophysics, with graduate students AlexandreGret and Huub Douma, have created a Coda WaveInterferometry (CWI) technique to monitorchange within these and other unpredictableoccurrences.

“The technique we’ve developed is very simple,”said Snieder. “We send a wave through an objectand have it bounce back and forth many times. Bytracking the wave’s movement we are able todetermine a change within an object as small as0.1 percent.”

CWI could potentially be used to inspect:

■ Airplane wings for the formation of cracks■ Nuclear reactor environments to detect

loose welding■ Mine tunnel roofs for integrity■ Fault zones■ Radioactive waste disposal sites■ Hydrocarbon reservoirs.

“The difficult part of our research is selectingapplications. There are so many possibilities,”said Snieder.

According to Snieder, CWI differs from existingmethods that are based on line-of-sight, where thewave moves from point to point, instead ofrepeatedly bouncing back and forth.

Researchers currently rely on wave experimentingto monitor change. In this process a computerimage is created from recorded waves. The imagesare then compared to others taken previously.However, this technique is not precise andgenerates errors. By comparing two unreliableimages the errors are magnified. This is the basictechnique used in the oil industry to monitorreservoirs.

By using CWI, researchers are able to directlymeasure the change in the medium, instead ofreconstructing an image, therefore obtaining adirect measure of the medium’s change. “CWIcould be combined with existing seismictechniques to more accurately plan the timing ofrepeat surveys,” he said.

“Most people think that the oil industry’s bigchallenge is finding the oil. It’s not,” said Snieder.“The challenge is getting the oil out. When areservoir is drilled, only 10 percent to 20 percentof the oil is extracted. The trick is to boost that tolarger values by adding pressure and changingother variables. The reservoir must be monitoredwhen it is producing because this process issimilar to conducting surgery with your eyes closed.”

Snieder's research group is highly interested incollaborating with other parties to make theseapplications operational.

This work is supported by a three-year grantfrom the National Science Foundation and wasrecently published in Science (vol. 295, p. 2253).

the quality of what happens here in Golden

that we were selected by a group halfway

around the world. The only criterion we were

given was that the new Petroleum Institute

has to be of a quality similar to Colorado

School of Mines.

I’m also optimistic about the Center for

Engineering Education, which was established

in 2000. We are one of only four centers for

engineering education in the entire United

States. It is a natural thing for us to do.

There are many complex issues in engineering

education and this center will help us more

purposefully address them, while providing

leadership to the country and the world. The

center has attracted national attention. It’s

realized several seven-figure grants and

contracts just in the last year-and-a-half.

Mines: Mines is now engaged in a majorfundraising campaign. What is theimportance of this campaign to the future of CSM? Trefny: People are really the heart and soul of

this institution. We wish to continue

attracting the most purposeful, talented

students and faculty. There is a lot of

competition for such people and so we need

to be able to offer reasonable compensation

packages and support, along with modern

technology and facilities. The main campaign

goals are concentrated on fellowships,

scholarships, various levels of endowed

professorships, support for key facilities and

programs, and capital development, the

largest piece of which is the Wellness Center.

The campaign is one of the mechanisms that

will ensure excellence going into the future.

Private support provides the margin of

excellence that is absolutely essential if we’re

going to realize our potential—to serve the

state, the country and the world.

Mines: What is the significance of the title ofthe campaign, Transforming Resources: TheCampaign For Mines?Trefny: I think it’s a great name. Of course,

it’s a play on words. Mines is concerned with

the discovery, extraction and development of

natural resources—transforming natural

resources. Then again, as an educational

institution we are transforming human

resources and so the name captures the

School’s mission from a more global

perspective. Also, the fields we serve, the

natural resource industries particularly, are

evolving rapidly and the name captures some

of how Mines is changing in response to the

needs of society. Finally, the name

communicates how we are seeking the

resources that will enable Mines to better

fulfill the School’s mission in a rapidly

changing society.

Mines: Why should alumni be excited aboutthe opportunity to participate in thiscampaign?Trefny: Because they have spent their careers

working for the same “noble purpose” that

this institution supports as a whole. We have

a history of graduating people who have gone

out and made a difference in the world. Now

we’re inviting alumni to help the School meet

the challenge of carrying this into the future.

Mines has tremendous capabilities and,

therefore, I think it has serious responsibilities

to make a difference in the world, to take on

the hard challenges, and to be at the table in

partnership with other segments of society to

try to solve these very serious problems. I

think there are few institutions that have such

a strong sense of identity that they could

articulate such a focused purpose. I would

hope that our alumni can see the potential of

this institution and will take pride in investing

in its future.

Mines: Would you elaborate on the plans fora new Wellness Center?Trefny: Approximately 85 percent of the

student body participates in sports and

athletics. In addition to contributing to a

person’s general well-being, there’s a

tremendous amount to be learned on the

playing field, whether in varsity sports, club

sports, intramural sports, or just recreational

activities. You learn a lot from working with

other people, about meeting challenges, and

stepping up to the plate. So we are working

hard to enhance the opportunities for our

students, faculty and staff with respect to

sports and athletics. We’re hopeful that we

will be able to build the Wellness Center in

the next few years. It depends on three

sources of funding. We would hope that the

state will support it with capital construction

funds. In a referendum last fall, students

voted overwhelmingly in favor of raising their

fees modestly in order to support bonds that

will cover about a third of the cost of the

Wellness Center. The remainder would be

raised from philanthropic sources, which is

why it is a major part of the campaign.

Mines: Given the pressures of being auniversity president, how do you relax?Trefny: I used to play golf, but I don’t find

much time anymore. I think I handle stress

not through any overt mechanisms like

running 10 miles every day, but somehow

internally. I think I relax because I love my

job and because I’m inspired by the

possibilities of this institution. Sure, there’s a

lot of stress involved in it, but that’s totally

overshadowed by the potential and by the

good things we might be able to do.

Mines: Of all the duties you perform atMines, what do you find most rewarding?Trefny: Officiating at commencement. It is a

very happy day for the graduates who are

leaving this school and moving on into the

great unknown with all the hopes and

promises of the future. It’s a happy day for

their parents too. You can see the pride on

their faces and also on the faces of the faculty.

To see the many flags displayed representing

all the countries from which the graduates

have come reminds me of the School’s global

reach. I find it very meaningful. The day

marks what we’re all about here—educating

young people and then sending them on to

do their work in the world.

Dr. John U. Trefny came to Mines in 1977 as

a physics professor, having held teaching

positions at Cornell and Wesleyan universities.

Beginning as an assistant professor in the

Department of Physics, he was promoted to

associate professor and later professor. He

became head of the department in 1990, and

served in that capacity until 1995 when he

became vice president for academic affairs and

dean of faculty. Dr. Trefny was named the

School’s 15th president August 1, 2001, after

serving as interim president the preceding year.

Mines: Dr. Trefny, what first drew you toMines 26 years ago?Trefny: I was attracted to Mines because of its

clear focus on engineering and science. Also,

graduate programs were being developed.

The physics Ph.D. program had just been

approved. I was excited about being part of

an institution that was on the move.

Mines: You’ve seen a lot of changes sincethen, but what are the enduringcharacteristics of the School ?Trefny: The focus and the quality. At Mines,

programs, people and activities relate to one

another because we have a relatively small

student body and a well-defined mission. I

think that connectivity is a source of great

strength for the institution. It’s quite unique

among universities. Even in small liberal arts

colleges you find a larger diversity of

programs. At Mines, we have a central theme

of human and natural resources and every

program here relates back to that central

theme and connects to it. Also, we have

maintained quality, even as we take on more.

With every new program, our first

consideration is whether we can do this with

excellence. Can we really make a contribution

that makes a difference?

Mines: What advantages does Mines offertoday’s students?Trefny: Students have the advantage of a small

campus that is very personal. They can have

personal relationships with faculty members,

as well as fellow students. At the same time,

because we are focused and concentrated in

our academic efforts, we can be very effective.

The high quality of our programs has a lot to

do with specialization.

Mines: The School is very specialized, but welive in a rapidly changing world. How doesMines fit into the future needs of society?Trefny: Many of the most worrying political

problems in the world today stem from

inequities in standards of living. The

development of natural resources is a

fundamental step toward raising quality of life

for people. This is our business. I think

Mines can play a very meaningful role for the

world in the future.

Mines: Do you think Mines alumni view theSchool in a similar light?Trefny: Certainly. I talk to many retired

alumni and our conversations are frequently

retrospective. Looking back on their careers,

whether in mining, petroleum, any other

engineering discipline, or applied science, they

can say they really made a difference because

they created opportunities and wealth. In

fact, these discussions have led me to start

talking about the School in terms of our

“noble purpose,” which is really to contribute

to a better world in the future through our

special capabilities.

Mines: These are challenging times forhigher education, particularly publicinstitutions. How will the School maintainstrength in the future?Trefny: We have identified a number of what

we call “focus areas for preeminence.” These

focus areas have emerged from the strategic

planning process and will help define the

School’s growth in the future. The field of

engineering education, which is our central

purpose, is one focus area. Others include

energy; environment; materials;

computational science and engineering; and

finally mining and underground construction,

along with their related fields. These are areas

where Mines has special capabilities and a

longstanding reputation. They relate to

research and teaching across the entire

campus. The field of energy includes fossil

fuels, renewable energy technologies,

economic policy and management. There is

similar breadth in the other focus areas as

well. We aim to continue building on our

historical strengths, while forging a path for

the future.

Mines: What bearing has the ExemplaryInstitution Bill had on planning?Trefny: It’s given Mines a degree of autonomy

that is unique among public universities, not

only in Colorado but nationally. We now have

greater license to chart our future. The Board

of Trustees can approve new degree programs

and set fees, and we can negotiate appropriate

reporting requirements with the state. We

remain a public institution and we take our

responsibilities to this state very seriously, but

because of our uniqueness in terms of size,

focus, well-defined mission and sense of

identity, we were given this opportunity to act

a little more independently.

Mines: What else would you point to assignificant recent developments at theSchool? Trefny: The Abu Dhabi National Oil

Company approached us about three years

ago with plans to create a university in Abu

Dhabi that would provide workforce training

for their petroleum industry. About a dozen

universities with strong petroleum

engineering programs were similarly

approached. After a year of intense

competition and scrutiny by the Abu Dhabi

National Oil Company and its multinational

partners, Mines was selected as the sole

contractor. It’s an educator’s dream to build a

whole university from scratch with all the

necessary resources provided. It doesn’t

happen very often. I think it’s a testimony to

Senior volleyball player Laurie Alzheimer loves playingvolleyball. In fact, she loves the game so much that she traveledmore than 2,000 miles away from home in order to play at thecollegiate level.

During her time in Golden, Alzheimer has compiled one of themost brilliant careers in program history. But she almost nevercame to Mines.

“I was hesitant about coming to Mines at first because it was allengineering,” Alzheimer recalled. “And since I wanted to go on tolaw school after graduation, I wasn’t sure if it was the place forme.” In addition to selecting a predominantly engineering school,Alzheimer knew that she would be leaving her family far behindin Alaska if she chose to come to CSM. But in the end, shedecided to become an Oredigger.

“It was definitely a big change for me at first since I didn’t haveany family here,” Alzheimer said as she recollected her first fewmonths at CSM. “But Coach (Head Coach Michele Harris) andthe other players were so warm and friendly to me that it madethe entire process much easier.”

It appeared thatAlzheimer felt right atease her first season onthe court as she wasnamed the RockyMountain AthleticConference Freshman ofthe Year and also earnedSecond Team All-RMACaccolades. In 113 gamesas a freshman, she put upastonishing numbers fora rookie as she led theteam with 370 kills and3.27 kills per game. Inaddition, she alsofinished second on thesquad with 296 digs andproduced 49 blocks, 23 assists and 16 service aces.

“I just went out and played volleyball and had a lot of fun myfirst year,” said Alzheimer, who was named the 1998 GatoradePlayer of the Year in Alaska as a high school senior. “It was a bigshock to me how well I played and all the awards I received thatyear.”

What made Alzheimer’s freshman year even more special wasthat she entered the CSM volleyball program with four otherfreshmen. “I came into the program with the expectation ofgraduating with those girls I came in with,” Alzheimer said. Butthat would not happen.

After compiling outstanding sophomore and junior seasons onthe court, Alzheimer was faced with the dilemma of playing herfinal season of volleyball as the only senior on the Mines roster. Asa team co-captain in 2002 along with junior Sonia Hesseltine,Alzheimer was responsible for helping teach the young CSMsquad this season. Of the 11 players on the roster, six of themwere freshmen.

“I feel very old,” Alzheimer joked. “But this season has also been a tremendous learning experience for me. I have always hadgirls on the team who were older than me, but that wasn’t the casethis season. I had to be a leader both on and off the court. Iwanted to share my knowledge of the game with all the youngergirls this season and I hoped they learned that you can never getdiscouraged or stressed out because it won’t help you at all in life.”

After graduating in May with a degree in chemical engineering,Alzheimer hopes to work for a few years before going to lawschool with the ambition of becoming a patent attorney.

“I have met some incredible individuals during my time atMines,” Alzheimer said. “My four years have been bothchallenging and fun and I wouldn’t trade them in for anything.”

MEN’S BASKETBALLThe Oredigger men’s basketball team is off to itsbest start in School history and stands at 15-2 overall and 9-0 inthe RMAC. In addition, Mines is ranked fifth in the North CentralRegion, the highest ranking in school history. Sophomore guardStephen Bahl is the leading scorer in the conference and is alsoranked seventh in the country at 24.4 points per game. CSM iscurrently 7-0 in Volk Gymnasium this season and has topped the100-point mark three times at home this season.

SWIMMINGSeveral CSM swimmers have produced personal-best times thisseason for second-year Head Coach Dave Hughes. Senior BrooksMasterson leads the men’s squad as he has already qualified for thenational championships, while junior Gretta Simpson isprovisionally qualified for the women’s team.

WRESTLINGThe CSM grapplers stand at 0-2 this season, but have had someoutstanding performances in tournaments. Senior 184-pounderMark Dubrovich claims a 17-5 mark and has won threetournament titles. In addition, senior 165-pound transfer Greg Chirieleison is 15-7 and has posted a second and third placetally, while sophomore 157-pounder Peter Jenson ranks among theconference leaders with nine pins.

Conference regular season andtournament championships, theMines men’s soccer team was on theoutside looking in when it came tothe NCAA Division II

Tournament.

Mines was left out of thepostseason tournament since

only the top two teams in theMidwest Region earned bids. WithIncarnate Word and MidwesternState both undefeated and boastingregular season wins over theOrediggers, there was no slot in thenational tournament for CSM.

However, the squad did enjoy a record-settingseason under fifth-year Head Coach Frank

Kohlenstein as he guided Mines to a single-season school record 16 wins against four

losses and one tie. When the team kicksoff the 2003 season, it will be riding a

nine-game unbeaten streak afterCSM closed out the regular

season by going 8-0-1.

The Orediggers opened the season withfive straight wins and vaulted all the wayto the No. 4 spot in the national rankingsand the top spot in the Midwest Region.Included in the win streak was an opening

night 5-2 victory over Tampa, the defendingDivision II National Champions, and a

4-3 overtime victory at Fort Lewis. Itmarked the first time since 1996 that

CSM had knocked off theSkyhawks, aspan of 10matches.

Globetrotting with McBride By Misti Brady

Orchids lightly drooping over the windowsill ofa bamboo hut perched on a mountain, overlookinga pristine lake covered in pink water lilies at theThaleh Noi Wildlife Preserve in southernThailand… this is a scene described by BrooksMasterson, a senior McBride Honors Programstudent, who globetrotted to Asia with 18 otherMines students, also from the McBride program.

Covering six countries in 29 days, these studentsimmersed themselves in the rich, diverse cultures ofSingapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong,Thailand and Malaysia.

They not only appreciated these lands from the perspective of American students, but from that ofengineers. “Engineering students tend to look at theworld in terms of how it works and what reallydrives the culture, whether it’s industry or miningor infrastructure,” said Masterson. “We really have a different outlook on those things, just from our educational background.”

Visits to several universities reinforced the

similarities between the engineering education received at Mines, the University of Malaysia andMahidol University in Bangkok. “Their textbooksand curriculum are almost identical,” saidMasterson. “However, the technical support is muchdifferent. The computer labs were much moreoutdated than those at American universities.”

The contrast between the technological influencesin industry and the lack of technology in thepeople’s daily lives surprised some students. “We saw small homes without plumbing or electricityand then saw microchip production facilitiesnearby,” said Masterson. “It certainly changed myperspective. As a Westerner I felt materialistic, but itmade me realize what else is out there.”

Despite the differences, he fell in love withThailand. “I spent a lot of time in Asia devising a plan for how to come back permanently. I decided that as an engineer, I’d like to expand theinformation technology capabilities, bringing theInternet to individual households,” he said. “There’s

more opportunity to create change in a developingcountry, because there’s more room for improvement.”

In addition to the serious engineering aspects of thetrip, students explored the culture by sampling the cuisine. “One student ordered pigeon in Saigon. Hethought it would be defeathered, and it was, but itcame out neck, head and all with a smile on its face.It still might be chirping,” said Masterson.

“Without McBride I wouldn’t have ever had theseexperiences on my own. I joined the program because I wanted the opportunity to travel to Southeast Asiaand be exposed to different cultures,” said Masterson.“I can’t wait to go back!”

Colorado School of Mines has announced the largestfundraising campaign in the School’s history. Transforming

Resources: The Campaign for Mines aims to raise $125 million forthe School in student scholarships, faculty support, capital

projects and academic programs.When completed, TransformingResources will nearly double the sizeof the Mines endowment.

The campaign was formallyannounced Feb. 22 at a black tiegala attended by more than 200members of the Mines community.Traveling from all parts of thecountry, guests enjoyed an elegantevening in Volk gymnasium,specially decorated for theoccasion. Following dinner,President John U. Trefny described

a strategic vision for the School, outlining the importance of thecampaign to the School’s future: “Mines is presented with a wealthof opportunity. Issues of global development and sustainabilitywhich are of increasing concern to people everywhere, relatedirectly to those fields in which the School is an internationalleader. Transforming Resources will help harness Colorado Schoolof Mines’ extraordinary intellectual capability in the noblepurpose of building a better world.” He described six focus areasfor preeminence that will help guide institutional development and resource allocation in the future. Taking into considerationthe School’s greatest strengths and the emerging needs ofsociety, these fields include energy, materials, minerals,engineering education, the environment, and computationalscience and engineering.

Although the campaign has just been publiclyannounced, the School initiated its first phase inJuly 2000. Since that date, discussions with majordonors and longtime supporters of the Schoolhave resulted in more than $60 million in gifts and commitments. This follows a trend ofincreasing private philanthropic support forMines. Over the past 10 years, gifts from alumni,friends, corporations and private foundations haveaveraged $15 million. During this same period,the School’s endowment has grown from $17million to $115 million.

Trefny emphasized the role these investments playin maintaining the quality of students’ educational

experience and the School’s ability to compete. He added thatwhile the School is ranked 15th in endowment per student amongpublic universities, the size of the institution and the greater-than-average costs of a technical education must be taken intoconsideration: “We offer a rigorous education in engineering andapplied science in the context of a small college campus. There isno doubt that our small size enriches the experience for students,but it also requires substantial investments to maintain the qualityof our programs.”

In addition to increased philanthropic support, the School hassuccessfully broadened its revenue sources in other ways. TheExemplary Institution Bill, passed by the Colorado Legislature in2001, has given Mines a greater degree of autonomy to establishnew programs, to set tuition rates, and to pursue opportunitiesconsistent with its statutory role and mission. Strong researchprograms attracted more than $30 million in sponsored fundingin 2001-2002—the largest sponsored research funding year todate. Furthermore, the School’s Technology Transfer Program ison the verge of spinning off its first private corporation and isworking on numerous additional projects. On this subject, Trefnypoints out, “The economic paradigm for public universities ischanging. It is imperative that we cultivate non-traditionalsupport for the School. We have met with remarkable success inthis arena and continue to forge mutually beneficial relationshipswith a range of private and governmental agencies. In addition toall of these efforts, however, philanthropy will continue to becrucial to our long-term success.”

One objective of Transforming Resources is to encourage supportfrom new donors, particularly among Mines’ young alumni.

Compared to other publicinstitutions, alumni supportfor Mines is strong —approximately15 percent ofMines alumni give to theSchool. However, because ofits size and reputation, Minescompetes for students, facultyand research contracts withmany private engineeringschools. Very often theseinstitutions enjoy even higher levels of alumni support and larger endowments.

Ensuring the School’s ability to attract leading academics and talented students is clearly akey objective of the campaign — more than 50 percent of the total campaign goal is aimedat student support, professorships and faculty development. The campaign goal for studentscholarships and fellowships is $50 million, of which $16.7 million has already been raised.A goal of $15 million has been set for faculty support and endowed professorships, of which$4.6 million has already been secured.

In addition to student and faculty support, Transforming Resources seeks to strengthenacademic programs, underwrite important new facilities planned for the campus andgenerate $10 million in enhanced annual support. A goal of $22 million has been set forendowed academic program support. Programs to be funded include collections for theArthur Lakes Library, undergraduate design and research, and curriculum enhancementthrough the Center for Engineering Education. A goal of $28 million has been set for capitalprojects. Capital construction plans include the Wellness Center (covered in the fall 2002issue of Mines), a major addition to Brown Hall, and several laboratory refurbishments.

With more than $60 million already secured, Transforming Resources is approximately halfway toward achieving its goal of $125 million. Referring to this goal, Campaign Co-ChairSteve Chesebro’ ’64 observed, “For those who are capable and inclined to do so, this is thetime to give back to Mines for the benefit we derived from our education. Our privatesupport is crucial to the continued leadership and strength of the School.”

President and Mrs. John Trefny have pledged $100,000 towardthe Transforming Resources campaign, directing their gift to

the Center for Engineering Education (CEE). Their contributionwill establish a named endowment to support curriculum andprogram developmentminigrants. This choicereflects a number ofwishes the Trefnys have for their campaigncontribution. “We wantedto make a gift with thepotential to reach alldepartments andprograms at Mines. Inparticular, we wanted tomake a gift that willstrengthen the educationalexperience for students inthe classroom,” said thepresident.

Minigrants will beawarded throughout theSchool; a departmentseeking to revisecurriculum, a professorwishing to augment anexisting course, or groupsworking to establish a newacademic program can allsubmit proposals. Theminigrants program has aproven record of success,and the Trefnys wish toprovide a lasting source offunding to extend its benefits indefinitely. Since such initiativeslead directly to improvements in teaching and learning, studentsin all academic divisions and departments may be helped by theTrefnys’ gift.

President Trefny was directly involved in the creation of CEE andis a passionate advocate: “Engineering education is at the heart ofwhat we do. The School’s historical approach to teaching, our size

and our well-defined focus have all contributed to a uniquelysuccessful engineering pedagogy. Not only does CEE preserve andreinforce these strengths internally, it also provides an avenue forMines to disseminate successful engineering education practices

nationally andinternationally.”

CEE is now a partner inone of the largest studieson engineering educationever conducted. Alongwith Stanford, HowardUniversity, the Universityof Minnesota and theUniversity of Washington,Colorado School of Minesis partnering in the Centerfor the Advancement ofEngineering Education(CAEE), which is fundedby a $10 million grantfrom the National ScienceFoundation. By studyinghow students learndifficult concepts inengineering, Mines’contribution to CAEE hasthe potential to impactengineering educationnationwide.

Expressing enthusiasm for the Trefny’s gift,Campaign Co-Chair Steve Chesebro’ remarked,

“By demonstrating their commitment to the institution in thisconcrete fashion, President and Mrs. Trefny have raised theconfidence of Mines’ entire constituency. They have shown trueleadership and provided a wonderful example for other potentialsupporters of the campaign.”

Transforming Resources: The Campaign for Mines requires an immense volunteer effortto be successful. For over two years, a core team of volunteers has been meeting withthe School’s leadership, helping to define strategy, planning and recruiting additionalvolunteers. The group is made up of leaders in business and civic affairs. With adiversity of knowledge concerning a range of markets and industries, they bring criticalperspective to help guide this major initiative. In addition to their advisory capacity,they serve as lead donors, organizers, campaigners and fundraisers. Traveling from allover the nation to attend meetings, these individuals contribute their considerableexpertise and give generously of their own resources. They are motivated by acommitment to higher education and a deep loyalty to Mines.

Heading up the Transforming Resources volunteer team are co-chairs Steve Chesebro’ PE ’64 and Howard Janzen BSc Met ’76, MSc Met. ’77. Steve isChairman of Harvest Natural Resources in Houston, Texas. Howard is formerPresident and CEO of Williams Communications in Tulsa, Okla. Together, they haveset the pace of the campaign through leadership gifts and by providing step-by-stepinput into the campaign planning. In addition to recruiting volunteers andencouraging individuals to make leadership gifts prior to the official campaign launch, they have met with the Board of Trustees, the president, and the CSMFoundation board.

From a boat bobbing on the surface of Pearl Harbor, retiredUniversity of Nebraska Professor Donald L. Johnson Met E ’50,MSc Met ’56 quietly records readings on his clipboard whiledivers relay information from below the surface of the water.They are part of a team of UNL engineers studying the USSArizona in Hawaii.

More than 3,000 tourists a day visit the memorialcommemorating the casualties of the Japanese attack on PearlHarbor. While that tourist activity takes place above the surface,Johnson is more interested in what is happening to the oldbattleship beneath the surface of the water.

Johnson is a retired metallurgical engineer who organized a group of engineers to study the battleship to determine the effectof corrosion on the ship’s remains. The group is working inpartnership with the National Park Service, which operates thememorial, and its Submerged Resources Center, which investigatesshipwrecks to document their locations and conditions.

“This stands as the most unusual memorial anywhere in the worldbecause it’s a three-dimensional thing,” Johnson says. “Here it is,those people are buried there, and where else do you see this kind

of visitor experience?”

Johnson was a teen-ager in 1941 buthis memories of theattack are vivid. Thecalm and serene settingof the memorial beliesthe tragedy that put theUSS Arizona in its finalresting place. On Dec.7, 1941, Japan attackedthe United States atPearl Harbor. Anarmor-piercing bombripped though the

ship’s deck at about 8:10 a.m. The ship exploded and sank in lessthan nine minutes killing 1,177 crewmembers.

The National Park Service, together with Johnson and his team,discovered that crustaceans attached to the ship’s hull impededthe rate of corrosion on the ship and limited the deterioration ofthe hull, which to this day contains the remains of the seamen aswell as an estimated 200,000-300,000 gallons of fuel oil.

The team’s measurements so far indicate that the metal on theship’s hull corrodes at less than half of what is normally expectedin open seawater – depending on the location on the ship,Johnson says. His goal in his volunteer work with the National

Park Service is to develop information the park service can use tomanage and preserve the site.

“The buildup of crustaceans is protecting the ship to someextent,” says Johnson.

“It’s actually forming a reef,” explains Bill Splinter, another UNLprofessor. “Over the centuries, that will be a reef. The metal mightbe gone but the ship will still be there in the form of a reef.”

In the past two years, Johnson has made four trips to the USS Arizona to gather data. The team and other researchers use avariety of means to study the ship including X-rays, DNA testing,work with the Navy’s dive-salvage unit and metallurgical analysisof pieces of the ship that had already been removed. Thepartnership is oneof cooperation aswell as mutualadmiration.

“Don and the dive team’scontributions are extremelyimportant,” saysMatthew Russell,USS Arizonaproject director withthe park service. “Ithink that with their help we’re beginning to learn more about theactual corrosionprocess on theArizona, which isthe first step indeveloping a long-term preservationplan.”

Johnson believes anational icon suchas the USS Arizonaought to bepreserved. “It cannotbe preserved for alltime, but modern techniques are now available to protect to theextent possible against a major oil release and, at the same time,continue to provide the all-important visitor experience nowavailable to the public.”

Walk into a physics lab at Mines and you’ll see a roomful oftoys, from baseball bats to matchbox cars.

Go down the hall to a physics classroom and you’ll see students infront of a big screen, playing with remote “clickers.”

Fun and games at Mines?

Actually, the devices are high-tech teaching tools for seriouslearning, located in the School’s new award-winning Center forTechnology and Learning Media (CTLM).

On closer inspection, you will see that the toys are connected tocomputers, which measure physical forces. And the clickers areactually part of a “personal response system,” which lets theprofessor know at the speed of light if students don’t understandthe lecture.

CTLM also contains Smartboards, computerized “blackboards”that can display a professor’s notes as he writes, print them outfor distribution, and even post them to a Web page. The buildingalso sports wireless network access and documentation camerasrecord lab experiments for later review by students.

The clicker technology is funded by an Award of Excellence grantpresented to the Department of Physics by the ColoradoCommission on Higher Education.

In selected classrooms in CTLM and Meyer Hall, each student isissued one of the wireless devices that transmits an infrared

signal to the instructor’s computer, according to Program ofExcellence Project Coordinator Susan Kowalski.

Portable equipment for use by up to 160 students isavailable for use in any classroom by all Mines

instructors, she added.

When the instructor poses a question, every student can activelyparticipate and see a projected histogram of the resultsinstantaneously, she explained. Complete class records arearchived, for use as the instructor wishes.

Professor Tom Furtak has found the devices to be valuable inseveral ways. “It not only challenges the students but keeps themawake beyond the typical 12-minute attention span,” he said.“Sometimes I’m prepared to discuss a topic further but find Idon’t need to. Other times I assume they understand and find outthey don’t.”

Dr. Frank Kowalski says he now builds in multiple choicequestions at the end of his lecture points to gauge studentcomprehension, as well as preparation level. For example, hewanted to know if students could multiply two matrixes in alinear algebra problem. Thirty percent couldn’t. “The studentstell me they think if 20 percent or more don’t get something, Ishould spend more time on it,” he said.

Department Chair Jim McNeil finds that the clickers reduce timeand overhead by eliminating the need for making copies,distributing handouts and taking up quizzes. He also uses the

technology to check attitude and motivate students. “When I’vebeen talking too long and see students start to drift away,” he said,“I use the clickers to gain another 15 minutes of their attention.”

Checking to see if students have done their reading is one way Dr. Todd Ruskell uses the technology. “I also make up questions onthe fly to see if they’re with me. And I use it for quizzes and takingattendance. It really reduces the paper-shuffling burden,” he said.

The Physics Department is loaning out portable clicker sets to K-12 teachers in the Metro area, where they are being used foreverything from elementary school orchestras to bully-proofingworkshops.

Teachers are reporting that students are literally in tears when theyhave to return the clickers, as evidenced by a few quotes fromenthusiastic teachers:

■ “I had some students crying when I had to give the equipment back.”

■ “My students are literally begging me to give them morequestions. I can’t quite keep up with their appetite for morequestions in class.”

■ “In 35 years of teaching, this program is one of the best thingsI’ve seen come along.”

Eighth-grade science and high-school chemistry students inLittleton, Colo., are participating in a study being conducted byMines researchers to determine how effective the technology is inassisting learning, she added.

Ganong taught hisfamily what it meant to be a gentleman, anadvocate, a scientist, an engineer, an outdoorenthusiast, a husband, a father, a grandfatherand an inspiration. He is survived by hiswidow, three sons, daughter Barbara PE ’82,10 grandchildren and a sister.

ALFRED G. HOYLGeol E ’40, EM ’40died Oct. 8 at home inRollinsville, Colo. Hewas 89. Hoyl, a miningman and rancher, met3-year-old DamarisSayre in a mud puddlewhen he was 10 andthe two were married in 1942. Theycelebrated their 60th anniversary in July. At16, Hoyl enrolled at Mines, but dropped outduring the Depression to work, first for theU.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, later withUnited Fruit in Honduras. It was there heinvented and patented the Hoyl BananaBagger, still in use today. The proceeds paidfor the rest of his education. Hoyl served inthe U.S. Army during World War II anddeveloped and patented numerous systemsfor demolition and land mine and obstacleremoval that were used at D-Day andelsewhere. He was discharged as a major.The rest of his life was spent in mining-related businesses. He also spent 52 years asranch manager for Los Lagos Ranch inColorado where he was highly regarded forhis preservation of the unique sub-alpineecology of the ranch. His seminal publishedwork, Vignettes of Mining History (co-authored by son Gregory), examined the lifeand times of the hardscrabble miners whoopened up the West. Hoyl is survived by hiswidow, a daughter, two sons, sixgrandchildren, a sister, his dog and his 35-year-old horse.

KURT E. LANKFORD BSc CPR ’81 ofBoulder, Colo., died Sept. 17 of a heartattack while running. He was 43. A notedbackcountry skiing expert, he co-wrote thebest-selling guidebook Skiing Colorado’sBackcountry in 1989. Lankford climbed hisfirst Fourteener at age 10 and had madeover 1,000 lifetime ascents from the ArcticCircle to the equator. He was an activemember of the Colorado Mountain Club’sDenver juniors group. From age 16-22, hewas a professional mountaineering guidefor his family’s adventure travel company,leading expeditions in Alaska, Colorado,Montana, Wyoming, Mexico, Kenya andTanzania. Later he traveled to Nepal,climbing in the Annapurna region to analtitude of more than 23,000 feet. He alsowas an avid rock climber. In addition to hisMines degree, Lankford earned a master’sdegree in mechanical engineering fromColorado University. He worked as a seniorengineer at Starsys Research Corp., andinvented a thermal switch incorporated intwo upcoming Mars Rover Explorationmissions scheduled for launch later thisyear. Lankford is survived by his widow,Karla, a daughter, a son, his parents, a sisterand a brother.

JOHN L. LABRIOLA Met E ’49 ofEnglewood, Colo., died Sept. 12. He was 74.Labriola served in the Army Corps of

Engineers duringthe Korean War. Hewas founder andowner of ColoradoPiping andMechanical Inc. Hewas a member ofKappa Sigma andthe Alumni

Association. He loved hunting and fishing.Labriola is survived by his widow, RoseMarie, brother Francis Met E ’52, hismother and many nieces and nephews.

ERNEST J.MALOVICH Geop E ’50 ofLakewood, Colo.,died Sept. 25 at age77. He was a seniormember of theAlumni Association

and attended his 40th reunion and otherfunctions over the years. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn and is survivedby two sisters and numerous nieces andnephews. “Ernest was very proud to havegraduated from the School of Mines,” sayshis sister, Elsie E. Beazley, “and spoke of thegood times and hard times he had at the School.”

CURTIS L. MILLER EM ’60 died Sept. 17 at home in Cañon City, Colo. He was 71.Miller was born andspent the first part ofhis life in rural Kansas.During the KoreanConflict, he wascommissioned as a firstlieutenant in the U.S.Air Force. Aftermarrying Shirley AnnPing, he attended CSM. He retired fromCF&I as superintendent of quarries. Millerloved to ski, golf, hunt and travel. He wasdedicated to his family and friends. He wasa member of Fremont County Habitat forHumanity, Lions Club and the Cañon CityPublic Library and was an active member ofCSMAA. Miller is survived by his widow,two sons, four grandchildren and numerousother relatives.

ALLEN M. RUGG JR. Geol E ’41 died Oct.18 in Scottsdale, Ariz., at age 83. He alsoearned a master’s degree from the CaliforniaInstitute of Technology. Rugg began hiscareer doing oil exploration in west Texas.After serving in the Pacific with the U.S.Navy during World War II, his profession asa geophysicist and passion for adventuretook him to Alaska where he had previously

BILLY G. BAUGH Geop E ’50 died Nov. 14in Aurora, Mo., at age 76. After graduationfrom Mines, he became a trainee atSeismograph Service Corporation in Tulsa,Okla., advancing to vice president of Centraland South American operations and thenvice president of Western Hemisphereoperations. In 1985 he was named companypresident, retiring in 1990. After retiring, heand his wife of nearly 53 years returned tothe Baugh family farm southwest of MountVernon, Mo. His widow, Lonnie, three sonsand nine grandchildren survive him.

KENT C. BURESH BSc Pet ’82 of Lafayette,La., died in a bicycle accident Sept. 29 at age42. The Broomfield, Colo., native wasvaledictorian of his high school and

graduated fromMines summa cumlaude. He was amember of SigmaAlpha Epsilonfraternity where heserved as secretaryand was a member ofthe Krewe of Apollo,

where he served as treasurer for severalyears. Buresh was also active in Mines LittleTheater and student government. He wasco-owner of Southland Auto Interiors for 18years. “Kent was a fine person who wellrepresented the high caliber of CSMgraduates,” said his friend and classmate EricLauber BSc CPR ’82. “He left his piece of theworld better than he found it. He will bemissed.” Buresh is survived by his companionof 18 years, Pat Rauch, his father, stepmotherand a brother.

SYLVESTER J. FISHER Pet E ’48 died Aug.17 at age 82. The Denver native was apetroleum engineer for the U.S. government.He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946.Fisher was a 50-year member of the Societyof Petroleum Engineers, past president ofthe Lions Club and ToastmastersInternational and a member of Theta Taufraternity. At Mines he was a member of

Alpha Tau Omega and had attended his 50thclass reunion. Fisher was predeceased by hiswife, Mary Jane. He is survived by three sons.

CLIFFORD FRONDEL Geol E ’29, amineralogist who opened the first box of

moon rocks and became the namesake fortwo minerals, died Nov. 12 at age 95. He alsoheld a master’s degree from ColumbiaUniversity and a doctorate from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology. As aprincipal scientist for NASA, Frondel wasthe first to peek into the first box of moonrocks as they sat in a specially constructedvacuum enclosure to safeguard against lunarorganisms. “It looked like a bunch of burnedpotatoes,” he said. He was also the first tomake a microscopic examination of lunardust and determine its mineral composition.During World War II, Frondel worked onquartz oscillator plates for military radios asa civilian employee of the Army SignalCorps. For a time, he worked on thesynthesis of sapphires and rubies for LindeAir Products Co., on the crystallization andcaking of salt for International Salt Co., andworked with specialists at the Fogg ArtMuseum and the Museum of Fine Arts inBoston on spectrochemical methods ofidentifying art forgeries. Frondel was aprofessor at Harvard from 1939-1977 andchairman of the Department of Geological

Sciences from 1965-1969. He described andnamed 48 new minerals species includingCliffordite and Frondelite. He alsodiscovered Laubmannite, a hydrous ironphosphate he named for a Germanmineralogist. Frondel is survived by hiswidow, Judith Weiss, and a daughter.

RICHARD A.GANONG PE ’47died Nov. 2 at homewith his family inBakersfield, Calif. Hewas 80. Ganong wasa third-generationCalifornian wholoved its mountains

and taught his passion for skiing to hischildren and grandchildren who includedprofessional skiers and a U.S. National Teamracer. He obtained a pilot’s license in 1938 atage 18. Color blindness kept him from flyingduring World War II, but his CSM ROTCtraining prepared him to be a secondlieutenant training army combat engineers.He married his high school sweetheart, JanetKoch, in 1944, completed his Army tour ofduty and returned to Mines to complete hisdegree. He was a member of the Sigma Nufraternity and a multi-sport athlete. In 1955,Ganong started a private consultingpetroleum engineering and geology practiceexploring for oil and gas in California. Hewas a registered professional engineer and aregistered geologist in California. He was amember of the Society of PetroleumEngineers, American Association ofPetroleum Geologists, American PetroleumInstitute and California IndependentProducers Association. As an active alumnus,Ganong supported the Bakersfield sectionand attended functions welcoming studentsand school visitors to the area. In his 52 yearsof business he developed a reputation forhonesty, integrity and selfless work. All whoknew him professionally recognized that hehad a passion for the oil business. During hisprofessional practice, Ganong took up flyingagain and flew his airplanes to visit well

surveyed for theconstruction of theAlaskan Highway. Hewas stationed at theCoast and GeodeticSurvey Observatoryin College, Alaska. Inthe ensuing years,Rugg worked

throughout the western United States,Mexico, Canada and Australia doing mineralexploration and seismology projects. From1955-1961, he was an independentconsultant working out of Tucson, Ariz.Among his accomplishments were seismicevaluation and site selection for the Nevadanuclear test site at Yucca Flats and theestablishment in Payson, Ariz., of the TontoSeismic Laboratory to detect undergroundnuclear tests. One of Rugg’s most memorableexperiences was a two-month trek with hisson, Jon, from Australia to Germany in 1974.After retiring, Rugg returned to Paonia,Colo., to the family ranch and reopenedValley View Orchards where he raisedpeaches and nectarines. He is survived by hiswife of 61 years, Eleanor, brother Edwin S.Rugg EM ’43, MSc Geol ’56, five children, 11grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MICHAEL C. RUPERT BSc Chem ’74,MSc Geochem ’79, of Highlands Ranch,Colo., died Oct. 25 at age 50. He is survivedby widow, Karen, a son, a daughter, hismother and stepfather, a sister and a brother.

RICHARD A. WEISS BSc Geol ’86 died in akayaking accident June 25, 1997, at age 33.Originally from Steamboat Springs, Colo.,Weiss was a two-time slalom kayakOlympian. He began the 1996 paddlingseason by winning the Slalom Olympic Team

Trials, earning the No. 1 boat designation formen’s kayak. He finished in sixth place,bettering his 16th-place finish at the 1992Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. He wasnamed the 1996 U.S. canoe and kayak team’sslalom Male Athlete of the Year. He was thefirst American to win a medal in men’s kayakat a world championship when he won thesilver in 1993 in Mezzana, Italy. He alsomade U.S. kayaking history with his third-place finish in the overall World Cupstandings in 1991, the highest finish ever foran American men’s kayaker at the time. Hewas the overall champion of the first-everChampion International Whitewater Seriesin 1990, a title he also claimed in 1993. Inaddition to his Mines degree, Weiss earned amaster’s degree in hydrology fromPennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. ingeological sciences from the University ofBritish Columbia in Vancouver. He ownedWeisswater Associates, where he served as an environmental consultant. His wife, Rosi,was pregnant with their first child when he died.

JOHN E. WILLSONEM ’36 died June 3 atage 90. He began hiscareer as a miningengineer for UnionPacific Coal Companyin Wyoming. He thenbecame a professor atthe University of Utahand was named head of the MiningEngineering Department in 1954, retiring in 1983. Willson devoted his professionalcareer to his students and to building astrong mining engineering program at the University of Utah. He was widelyrecognized for his knowledge of coal mining,

his keen insight, his analytical approach andhis ability to solve problems. In 1973 he wasrecognized by then-assistant Secretary of theInterior Hollis M. Dole for his contributionsto the success of the Coal Mine Health andSafety Act. In 1975, he received the CSMDistinguished Achievement Medal. In 2000,the John E. Willson Distinguished AlumnusAward was established at the University ofUtah. Willson is survived by his widow,Alberta, two daughters, three grandchildrenand one great-grandchild.
