It’s all happening in the towncentre!

We have a flurry of new andquality shops opening here,including the new CurtainHouse at No. 107, and a hubfor business entrepreneurs at109, as well as BorschElectric moving into theformer UTC gym building onthe village green. We alsounderstand that New LookErdington is not marked forclosure and will be here for thelong term.

(There will be anotherannouncement due shortly ofa quality store opening in theHigh Street but we are swornto secrecy at the moment - wewill keep you posted!).

You see, we can all get a bitdown with stores like Marksand Spencer closing every-where, and with Brexit of

course. But the lesson is tocarry on regardless and to letthe rest of the world keepturning.

Along with the option offuture investment in the towncentre via the governmentsFuture High Streets fundingand the Councils’ UrbanCentres Framework, Erdingtonmay be coming in to its own -there’s plenty to be cheerfulabout!

Another thing to shout about isthe celebrations for BaguetteDu Maison, who have been inthe High Street for 10 years,selling quality healthy foods tothe hungry of Erdington. Bestwishes from us.

Have YOUR say on the future of Erdington!

Birmingham City Council are seeking locals’ opinion on theDraft Urban Centre Framework

The Draft Urban Centres frameworkis a move by the council to pinpoint 10Centres of Transformation around thecity (and Erdington is one), to createwhat our town centres will look like inthe future. High Streets are changingwith the growth of Internet shopping andthe retreat of major retailers from ourtowns.

The plan for the future can involveextra non-retail aspects to our areas,such as more leisure facilities, diningand cultural options, and morecommunity based venues, for example.

With this in mind BirminghamCity Council have organised a drop-inday at Erdington Leisure Centre(Orphanage Road) to give residents achance to see the proposals forErdington and to give their opinions ofhow they would like the town to evolve.

Some suggestions that have comeforward already for residents to raisewith the Council can include:• Erdington needs to be redeveloped toprovide a range of non-shopping optionssuch as restaurants, or leisure activities

like a cinema or cultural uses likemuseums - alongside retail shops• The need for additional off streetparking• The need for off street parking nearthe train station – a park and ride – toprevent so much of the High Street’sparking being taken up by commuters• Support the Council using Compulsorypurchase orders where required tofacilitate redevelopment.• Encourage the opening up of CentralSquare to allow a frontage facing ontoSt Barnabas Church to allow a betteruse of the church and graveyard as acommunity focal point.• Development of the pedestrian area ofthe High Street for more community use

There is more data on-line nowand the idea of reaching Euston, London inunder 50 minutes is being discussedincreasingly. Private investment in Erdington isalso evident with the stylish conversion ofthe Honeywell offices opposite the AbbeyChurch. This project by Severn Capital isprogressing well and all 85 apartments aresold. I cannot wait to see what Severn Capital

When people told us they weren’t happy withErdington High Street, we knew we had to act.

Shoplifters, anti-social behaviour anddrugs were all highlighted to us, by people whowanted to see a bigger police presence. Inresponse we recently began what will be aregular series of ‘all-out’ days, where thepolice joined with departments of Birminghamcity Council using our uniformed officers,drugs dogs, drones, and teaming up withtrading standards, environmental health,licensing and highways workers as we showedour commitment to making the High Street abetter place for everyone.

The drugs dog searched a number ofprolific offenders, one property is facing aclosure order after it was deemed unsafe,while trading standards seized alcohol not fitfor sale. A number of referrals for help weremade for rough sleepers.

Erdington Sgt Jenna Thomas said:“Today’s been a great day, which has reallyshown the power of people from the local areaand the other organisations working together.

“But it’s important to stress that this is notthe end of our work to improve Erdington HighStreet. We’ll continue to work hard to focus onthe crime and anti-social behaviour that can

really affect the quality of life of people wholive and work in the area.”

We’re also obtaining criminal behaviourorders which will ban prolific offenders fromthe area, and have issued 25 tickets orderingpeople to leave the area.Since November, we’ve also been gettingsome help from on high to tackle drug dealingfollowing complaints from residents inErdington.

Our drone team was drafted in to give anunprecedented view of the High Street so thatofficers could gather intelligence on peoplesuspected of being involved in serious crime.

The footage and images of suspectsgathered will now be fed back to our localofficers to build up intelligence, which will helpidentify future targets for arrest.

06th October 2018 saw the GrandOpening of a new bookshop inErdington by Bishop Mike Royal(pictured) who kindly attended to givea short speech, cut the ribbon andpray a blessing over the new venture.

A former librarian with Birmingham CityCouncil, Gina Maddison, visitedErdington Library on the 29th November totalk about her book ‘The Girl fromGuildford Street’, and the nostalgiaevoked was much enjoyed by all who camealong.Says Gina, who writes under the name ofGrace Caroline Holte: “My book coversmy memories of growing up in the back-to-backs of Aston in the 1960s and, as myDad did lots of digging into the family’spast, I can go much further back with mytalks. It was lovely to meet people who hadalready bought the book, like David andPam Humphries, who travelled over fromSolihull to meet me on what was a dreadfulday weatherwise.

“Thanks to Saleem and Pat of Erdingtonlibrary for inviting me – I so enjoyed mymorning. It was good that the audiencegot so involved – asking questions andcontributing their stories about growing upway back and working for all the bigfirms around Birmingham – HP Sauce,Ansells, Dunlops, Tucker Eyelets and

Cadburys – where my motherworked - to name a few. I hope toreturn to Erdington library againsometime during 2019.”

All proceeds from the book go tocharity benefiting several worthycauses including the ‘Homelessat Christmas’ fund. Gina’s talks, which include a

poignant and moving power-point presen-tation, are free. She’s happy to visit andpresent to interested community andfriendship groups in Erdington or wher-ever they meet.

After ten years ,I am leaving St.Barnabas andErdington and Ido so with aheavy heart.Though Irequested to stay

, the Church of England now adheresto its regulations on retirementwhether you feel your age or not, andI certainly don’t !

It has been an amazing timediscovering first of all what it is to be anomadic community, meeting in St.Barnabas School on Sundays and atSix Ways Baptist Church during theweek. I remain indebted to Gerard andthe Baptist Church members for theirgenerous and caring hospitality duringthose five years. It was a time thatenabled us to look freshly at how togrow imaginatively . It was a greathonour to be given such a free hand inthe rebuilding of the church, thoughcoping with the main contractor goinginto liquidation just months into theconstruction work, leaving behind 13sub contractors was not something Iwould wish on anyone!

My last input in glass and colour will bethe stained glass windows for thechapel which Pippa Blackall will beginin May. Entitled Nourishment for theJourney, they will depict stories ofJesus with food, water and wine and

hopefully encourage people to imaginethemselves in the stories, as well asadding colour and warmth to our smallprayerful worship space.

It is also very exciting that theFeasibility Study for the rearchurchyard has begun and I amextremely confident that thesubsidence area which has causedpain and irritation to local residents andfamilies of people buried there will berestored to a peaceful haven , albeitthat it will take a little time .

Erdington gives us a small glimpse ofthe world with its multi-ethnic diversity; I am so much the richer for it and so,I believe, is the church and school. Ihave been privileged to travel withmany people , to be alongside them insad times and joyous occasions;alongside colleagues, we have tried toprovide a safe haven of hope,acceptance and practical help forpeople in distress and need; a spacefor awe, wonder and prayer that cangenerate new life and show people aglimpse of God’s love.

I will miss many faces and places thathave become dear to me and enrichedmy life. Thank you for that. I hopeErdington will continue to be a placethat will dream dreams that can beachieved to bring new opportunitiesand grow community. God bless, Freda

Erdington Business Improvement District (BID)comprises of almost 300 retail and non retailbusinesses (listed below) in the town centre area, including the High Street, Coton Lane, YorkRoad, Barnabas Road, New Street, Orphanage Road, and the High Street side of Sutton NewRoad. Businesses voted in 2016 for the BID to continue for a further 5 years from July 2017.

The aim of the BID is to help preserve the town centre as a thriving community area and toencourage residents to ‘shop local’.
