I editor‘s letter

As we go to press for the last time this year it’s hard to look back over the last 12 months and not feel a sense of relief that we have survived 2010.On a global as well as a local scale it hasn’t been the happiest of years financially, but, dare we say it, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Certainly things seem to be improving, albeit slowly, but most people in business are reporting that the bottom of the proverbial barrel has been reached, scraped, and that they are beginning to ease themselves back up the other side. Let’s hope so. So let’s look forward instead and hope that 2011 brings a lot more cheer and good tidings for everyone. Here in the Canary Islands in December many of us do celebrate Christmas and the New Year – some full-time residents return to homelands for a few days of cold winds, snow and rain, warm hearths and time with friends and family. Others welcome family to our newer homes here in the sunshine, people who are delighted to escape the gloom and misery of Northern European winters. And some of us are more than happy to let Christmas and the noisy New Year celebrations pass by, and subtly slip into 2011.However you plan to celebrate this seasonal time, have fun, be true to yourself and let’s hope that the next 12 months are beneficial to all our readers, clients and friends.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the Canary Islands are, for most of the time, a pretty good place to live.If you have spent more than a few years here and set up home, are working and raising a family, you tend to forget the pluses concentrating, as you do, on the day to day stuff, mortgages, keeping the fridge full, school runs...So now and then it makes sense to stop and smell the Canarian roses.There are very few places in the world that have the enviable climate we can pretty much rely upon here in the Canary Islands. Apart from the odd wet (ok, in recent times very wet!) day, most of the islands experience delightful climates, with a trip to the beach an all-year-around choice. The other thing that maybe we take for granted, or perhaps don’t allow ourselves to experience, is the richness of the diverse cultures around us. We live in a real salad bowl of nationalities, identities and backgrounds. Taking your child to school the likelihood is that there are parents from Spain, South America, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, England, Ireland, Belgium, Croatia, all chatting away in their differing levels of Spanish, exchanging news about their kids, who are and represent the next generation of Canarians. With just a smattering of Spanish we can delve into the rich cultural mix that we have here, and making friends with people we might never meet living our ‘old’ or other lives. It’s a huge plus, one we might not make the most of, but there to be exploited.If someone is asking about coming to live in the Canary Islands it’s hard to know what to advise – if you live here and made the move you often know instinctively who is going to make it and who won’t. But those who are almost guaranteed to get the most out of their time here are those who see the full picture and are willing to take the plunge and find out what the real Canaries, beyond the sea and sun, are all about.

Norman has also worked for Age Concern here in Tenerife.The celebrations lasted longer than the day in question, Norman told us, as this was very definitely a “once in a lifetime event”. When he and Edna returned to Tenerife there was another surprise in store. Norman thought he was attending a charity evening at Westhaven Bay in Costa del Silencio, and even when a red Rolls Royce collected him from home he didn’t suspect anything, but when the couple arrived they were greeted by over 80 friends and colleagues who were there to congratulate him on years of charity work very well done.

Santa Cruz on ice

Isla de Hielo is the name of the Santa Cruz council’s plans for the festive season. The main measure is to convert the lake in the centre of the Plaza de España into an ice rink for Christmas. The rink, which will have a capacity for some 80 people, will be open to the public every day from 10am to midnight non-stop, including fiestas, from December 3rd until January 10th. If you don’t want to skate, there will be seating where you can just sit and watch all the winter activity.It is hoped that this ice rink, which will occupy 600 square metres and be filled with ice eight to ten centimetres deep, will attract thousands of visitors to the

The latest Holly awards which are voted for by holiday giants TUI customers saw the Canaries coming up roses.A total of 19 Holly awards were made to local hotels, 31 in total for Spain out of the 100 up for grabs. Norman Goodall, MBECongratulations to Norman Goodall who was recently awarded the MBE for “for charitable activities and services to the community in Tenerife, Spain”.Norman, his wife Edna and two sons, Nicholas and Craig, were at Buckingham Palace on October 29th as the man who

Second shop opens in Gran CanariaFollowing the successful opening of their first Canarian store, Primark have just opened their second in the CC El Mirador, Jinamar creating over 208 jobs. The company, which still retains its headquarters in Dublin, opened its first Spanish store in 2006, and now boasts over 3,000 employees throughout the country in 18 shops, and despite the economic crisis has reported a growth of 18 per cent in total sales in 2010, a pattern which shoppers here in Tenerife are hoping will see the open a large outlet here in the not too distant future. Christmas traditions in Spain are quite different from the UK. Christmas Eve (nochebuena), is an important evening for families, who usually gather for a special meal, then many attend the midnight mass (Misa del Gallo). In Taganana and La Matanza this is followed by the Baile del Niño (Dance of the Child) where young men wearing traditional costumes dance in procession in front of the statue of the newborn child inside the church.The small town of Tigaiga near Los Realejos is transformed into

a recreation of various places which were significant in the life of Jesus. Most towns and villages are decorated with lights and garlands, and beautiful nativity scenes (Belenes). Many of these towns will have held a contest beforehand for the best Belén.Christmas Day is a day for visiting family members. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra performs a very popular concert in the port area of Santa Cruz that evening.New Year’s Eve (nochevieja) is party time, with dancing to live bands in most town centres. With each

chime of the clock at midnight, you must eat a grape (make your wish first). Magnificent fireworks displays follow, with champagne and dancing into the early hours.

This annual open air concert is one of the highlights of Christmas in Santa Cruz and is usually televised live on TV Canarias if you can’t make the trip to the capital.Probably could be compared to a Night at the Proms, as the orchestra play a range of favourite songs, medleys, well known classical pieces, and all wreathed in seasonal delights.This year they are joined by the Mississippi Gospel Choir.

Luke ramsay may not look like a mi-racle worker, he may not even sound like a miracle worker, but for more than a few people with back problems who have passed through his hands he has worked what is as close to a miracle as they can get.

Back problems in all their manifestations seem to be the scourge of modern living. Certainly for people who pass most of their day sitting in an office and/or spending hours behind the wheel of a car this is true. Add to that the stress of 21st century living, where there’s too little emphasis on health and too much on speed and delivery, it’s no surprise that we are suffering from more and more spinal related injuries.Luke Ramsay is a practicing Chiropractor and board certified Craniopath, now based in Palm Mar just opposite CC Muelle de Génova (he was previously in El Madroñal). Surprisingly Spain is one of the few countries that has still to recognise chiropractic as an official branch

of medicine, but this is changing, and more and more people are coming to Luke with back problems that they have unsuccessfully had treated elsewhere. And while his skills might not yet have a Spanish licence, his growing patient list here includes many Spaniards who are quickly convinced of the value of the treatment they can avail of in his consultancy.Luke, it must also be stressed, has a full medical background, and will also refer you for alternative or conventional forms of treatment if he feels he is not the right person to help. One of the problems that Luke is seeing more and more of among his patients is herniated discs, which causes a

variety of ailments, including back pain, leg pain, or weakness of the lower extremity muscles. As we get older the gel between the spinal discs becomes thinner and if cracks form in the disc, bulges appear, cracks form, creating pressure on the nerves. The causes are many, the cures few. The symptoms to look out for, says Luke, are a slight s-shape in your body when you look in the mirror, pain in the buttocks and down the legs, pins and needles, tenderness and pain in the legs that is worsening. If Luke suspects this is what you are suffering from he will possibly send you for an MRI scan, a form of high tech x-ray that will produce a 3-D image of

your back and the problem area. If you are suffering from a herniated disc Luke will be able to help you, and has, as well as his chiropractor training, years of training in neurology. Luke will assess your individual situation and talk you through your options. If he does feel he can help (and in the vast majority of cases he can), he will offer you a course of sessions – but he is also very clear about what he can and cannot do and won’t promise miracles or expect you to pay the earth.Treatments are gentle, using a specialised bed that moves your limbs as he manipulates. He will also advise on precautions to take in day to day

stuff, like taking shopping from the trolley to the car, or clothes from the washing machine, to ensure you don’t further damage your back. He can and may also refer you on to the clinic’s resident physiotherapist Dorothy Collinson for further attention, massage and exercises.He has helped many people who thought they had run out of pain-relief options. 11 finalists selected from 154 original competitors took part with entries from Tene-rife, Lanzarote, Portugal, Belgium, Columbia, Mexico and Russia. 40 models, the majority Canarian, took their collections onto the catwalk while Fashion TV recorded clips which are to be broadcast in over 130 countries.The judges included designer David Delfin, Vanesa Cabeza and actress Rossy de Palma as well as international model Damián Martín and Carnaval designer Santi Castro. They shared their difficult task with designers Ros Jiménez and Jacqueline Cuestas, Tenerife Moda creators from the companies Roselinde and Morena Mía respectively.

The prizes were won by:1st: Margot Inés Ferreira Rosales, from Uru-guay (€4,000)

2nd: Annette Kölling, from Belgium, but born in Germany (€2,000)An additional prize was awarded for innovation

and commercial viability to Argentinians Cintia Vanesa Sosa and María Fernanda Arnaldi (who work together as Savanquita!). (€2,000).

A trip to La Laguna can not only take you on a journey back in time, but it could well turn out to be one of the best places to do your Christmas shopping.

La Laguna is situated in the north east of Tenerife, in the Valle de Aguere between the Rural Park of Anaga and the mountain of La Esperanza. Steeped in history, and originally the capital of the island, this city is where Spanish troops won the final battle against Guanche resistance, thus completing the conquest of Tenerife in 1496 and leading to the island’s incorporation into Spain. Following this defeat, the city (then in Aguere) was founded the next year as the Villa de San Cristóbal. This settlement was soon moved further inland to its current location where it would be less susceptible to pirate attacks. This new area also benefitted from fertile soil for cultivation and a nearby supply of drinking water. Thus La Laguna was born, initially centred around the actual Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción.

Since then, La Laguna has gradually expanded. Due to the economic development of Santa Cruz, the city lost its title of capital in 1843, but despite this it is still a cultural capital. This was recognised internationally when it was named Patrimonio de la Humanidad by Unesco on December 2nd 1999.The streets of the heart of La Laguna, most of which dates back to the 16th century, now form an open air shopping centre with a variety of shops set amongst grand monuments and historic buildings. It is a fairly active shopping area, where small family businesses which have survived through the years now mix with modern shops and exquisite boutiques.This is where you can find plenty of typical handmade objects, first class fashion, perfumes, electronic goods, Tenerife wines, and a wide variety of fresh food products from more than 20 stalls in the municipal market in the Plaza del Cristo. Here, you could find that unique gift that you won’t find anywhere else.The centre of La Laguna has not changed much over the years. The configuration of the streets remains the same, some buildings have been lost, new ones have been built, and others have been restored. But the skeleton of the city remains the same, and the majority of the historic centre has now been pedestrianised, making it a safe place to be for all ages. Look up, and you will see typical Canarian balconies and carved wooden windows together with

characteristic roofs covered by endemic plants. On ground level, there are beautiful plazas, lush gardens, and after dark, theatre and music in the streets. Add to this the delightful Christmas lighting, and you have a magical wonderland brimming with cultural activity.La Laguna is dedicated to science and culture, so in between shopping you could visit one of the many art exhibition rooms or museums. One which is certain to surprise both adults and children is the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos where some of the secrets of the Universe are revealed.If you are spending a whole day in the city, hunger is bound to strike sooner or later. La Laguna has a variety of tascas and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional dishes or creative cuisine, all made with fresh local products. There are also many international restaurants to choose from. If you are just peckish, try some of La Laguna’s local pastries and sweets, either in a café or buy from a specialist shop where these delights are handmade on the premises.If you are staying after dark, marvel at the festive lighting, and maybe attend a performance at the beautifully renovated Teatro Leal.All in all, a visit to La Laguna at this time of year will not only provide a great cultural day out, but a different and unusual centre for some Christmas shopping in a unique atmosphere.

The large, elongated dark air inlets with black grilles also add to the vehicle’s athletic appearance.The front edge of the structure, above the mudguards, which slopes off towards the rear, is not only a novel design feature but also represents a new interpretation of a formal design element harking back to the uniquely rich wealth of shapes and forms present in historic Mercedes sports cars.A distinctive and muscular sports car-like shoulder line above the rear axle highlights the athletic character of the new CLS. There’s food, and there are restaurants; there’s pizzas and pastas and italian restaurants, and then there’s zena.

Located in C/ Austria, San Eugenio Alto, walk into Zena and within seconds you feel you are worlds away from the hustle and bustle you may have left behind. Owner Alessandro has worked some form of magic with his chosen interior theme, for while the food may be some of the best Italian and international cuisine you have tasted, you could be in Bali or Thailand, Rio de Janeiro or Maui, with

swathes of fronded plants hanging down to create shapes and sensations. Tables and chairs are solid and wooden, with some delightful inlay designed in the tables, and rope and wicker chairs with the restaurant‘s name stamped discretely into the wood. Wicker screens are in use around the space allowing the staff to create a variety of settings, from intimate to party, and with a variety of table sizes Zena can cater for couples to groups of twenty, without any necessary bothersome furniture manipulation. There’s also an upper terrace for pre or post drinks or private parties. The menu, as mentioned, is international, but with Italian overtones, and the staff are, in fact, all Italian. If you weren’t sure, the presence of the roaring sweet smelling wood oven that‘s cooking your pizzas and breads would be something of a giveaway. The menu is also delightfully different to the run of the mill restaurants which promise ‘Mediterranean’ but all they offer is ten varieties of steak and chips, frozen fish or half a chicken. Here at Zena the food is cooked with flair and zing and more than some imagination.We sampled the quite amazing Foccacia de queso, fine layers of pizza style base with a melting filling of cheese – devoured in seconds by all in our party, including the sometimes picky five year old, who

was more than happy to leave the confines of the very discretely placed bouncy castle for it. She stayed, enticed by the superb starter and delved into our next dish, a Spaghetti Scoglio with sea food, including clams, prawns and mussels. The phrase ‘finger licking good’ may not have been invented with this dish in mind, but it applied to our family on the night in question. Plates were wiped clean, not a drop of sauce left. To finish we were treated, and it was a treat, to probably one of the nicest pizzas I’ve had the pleasure of eating, base perfectly thin, crispy without being

too crunchy, tomato and mozzarella in ideal proportions, and a simple ham topping. We were fighting over the last piece.But there’s so much more to enjoy here food wise, with a terrific meat and fish selection – steaks with cheese fondue, a variety of freshly prepared sauces, chicken breast with mushroom sauce, Bream or Sea Bass cooked in salt, prawns Provençal, or grilled lobster. Desserts – Tiramisu, Profiteroles, Panna Cotta, ice creams galore, crêpes, and chocolate desserts and pieces that will tempt even the most serious calorie watchers. Wines are abundant and well selected to suit all the dishes on offer, just ask the very friendly and professional waiting staff. On the evening we were there it was obvious

that Zena enjoys a huge return clientele as many guests were greeted as old friends by the staff, though new clients were just as well attended. And that aforementioned bouncy castle has made the great eatery even more family friendly and on the night we were there, there was a table of mothers with their six to nine year olds, who were happy to bounce the evening away, with pizza in between, as the delighted mothers enjoyed a relaxed dinner in wonderful surrounds. Zena is open 1pm – 4pm, 7pm – 11.30pm, will close on December 24th but open on December 25th. They are already taking bookings for their December 31st New Year’s Eve party, which will feature a set menu, all inclusive price, live music, and lots and lots of fun. For the sixth year running, the hotel Sheraton La Caleta held a fun fiesta at the end of october for all its suppliers, collaborators and staff to thank them for their efforts.Neptune, mermaids and numerous marine animal figures were there to entertain in an ‘under the sea’ atmosphere. It was a colourful event with cocktails and a specialist seafood buffet.The guests, who included travel agents, incentives and congress agencies, local press and providers as well as members of the Ayuntamiento of Adeje and Disa, all had a whale of a time during the party which ended with a laser show disco.

Paul and Debbs are the owners of this new bar which opened in the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos at the end of August. Debbs is a big David Bowie fan and the name of the bar was inspired by his 1987 tour, The Glass Spider.Comfy rattan sofas, chairs and coffee tables sit under canvas pergolas on the terrace for those of us who prefer the great outdoors, or high-backed bar stools, dining chairs and tables wait within. Children are made welcome with colouring books and crayons and your dogs are welcome too as the bar does not sell food. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t eat there. Malvasia wine was a luxury product which was served at the tables of the principal Europe-an monarchs, and at the noble and bourgeois class banquets of the old continent and Latin America. The prestige attached to some of the varieties was so high that literary greats of the era, such as Sir Walter Scott, góngora and William Shake-speare, mentioned them in their works.

300 years later, Tenerife’s wines have recovered that brilliance. The chain of prizes they have gathered over the last decade in the most prestigious national and international contests are evidence of their actual expansion.

The grape varieties, the climate and the pecularities of the volcanic soil have given the essence to the island’s wines, making them unique with their variety of aromas and tastes. The new image, fruit of the unity of the handcrafting tradition and the latest technologies, is of a high quality product with incomparable originality and personality.

Denominations of origin, the environment and landscapeThe ample range of Tenerife wines is supported by five denominations of origin: Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de La Orotava, Abona, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Valle de Güímar) which cover the island. They are regulated by their respective regulating councils, whose creation has allowed the sector to be modernised and developed, based on quality criteria, but with respect for traditions. This in turn has allowed for the conservation of traditional ancestral countryside and the sustainable development of Tenerife Rural.Nowadays, visitors to the island and residents are shown the qualities of Tenerife’s wines, as much for their varieties and enological excellence as for the environmental and cultural values they represent. To develop enotourism, the wines are being shown to the population, both residents and visitors, who are taken to see the production areas. This generates feelings towards conservation and valuing rural areas.Wine production is now one of the main forms of agriculture in Tenerife with 2,024 square kilometres of land dedicated to the cultivation of grapes

for four of these one hour programmes, thanks to the Blackstone Film Company, who have been working non stop with the Discovery Channel team. Of course the main protagonists, the dinosaurs themselves, will be added later. Producer Caroline Pachero told us that each hour long programme will be divided into six parts, each telling its own story, and unlike many of its predecessors, there will be no ‘educational’ voice-over, but the pictures and dinosaurs will tell their story through their actions, “which is why we have been working with storyboard artists rather than writers”, Carolina explained. “The scientific knowledge will be embedded in the story”, she continued…” if the story is well told it will grab the audience”. It will also, quite obviously, have a greater universal appeal. The team was hugely enthusiastic about Tenerife as a location, and the work that Julia Schroedl, Service Producer, and her colleagues at Blackstone Film Company do to help companies make the most of these islands, and in a highly professional way.
