F R O M PASTOR’S P E N
“H ere is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners . . .” This
verse was written by the apostle Paul to Timothy his “true son in the faith.”
A couple of days ago after leaving our ELCW women’s meeting where the ‘World’s Saxiest Man’, Dick Boyum, told us
so much about saxophones I
decided to go over to Ryan
Bonaminio park to take a walk.
While I was there I got to think-
ing about what I was going to
write for my April Messenger
article. I occurred to me as I
was watching all the activity
there that every person at
that park was a beloved
child of God and on
Good Friday Jesus
would have died for
every single one of
them.
Now I have to say that I
guess I have never looked at it
quite like that before because
before me I saw people of many
shapes and sizes; joggers were
jogging, men were playing
basketball, people were walking
their dogs, boys and girls were
playing baseball, and there were
little ones playing on the play-
ground equipment. I heard a
few different languages being
spoken. I saw people with black
skin, brown skin, and white
skin. All God’s people were out
enjoying the day.
Interesting, because I think
if we look at God’s world in that
way we are more likely to be
open minded about who
our neighbor is and not
building up walls or
fences between us -
literally or figura-
tively. When we keep
in mind that Jesus came
to save all humanity; not
just this one or that one, not just
the people who live in the U.S.
or Canada or Germany, and not
just the people who speak
English or Italian, it may give us
a different perspective on what
it means to be children of God
with full acceptance.
When St. Paul was writing

about sinners that is one basket
we are all fit into no matter who
we are, no matter what we do,
and no matter how much money
we do or do not have. We all
come under the same umbrella -
sinners.
So, I guess in this month of
April, especially during Holy
Week, maybe we could
remember that Christ
Jesus came to die for
each of us so that we
all might live. No
matter who we are.

O n Saturday April 15th we will, once again this year, be having a prayer vigil in the sanctuary from 11am until
4pm. There will be opportunities for any number of people to come into the sanctuary to pray for assigned ½ hour time slots.
PRAYER VIGIL FOR HOLY SATURDAY
For those of you who do not
know what a prayer vigil is or
have not participated in one: you
sign up for a specific time pe-
riod to come to the sanctuary to
pray. There will be a lit candle
in the front of the church on a
table where there will also be
some scripture readings and
some written instructions on
doing the Spiritual practice
of Lectio Divina, which is a
way to pray with the scriptures.
This Spiritual practice has been
a part of Lutheranism since the
time of Martin Luther. You are
also welcome to bring in your
own bible, chose a favorite
scripture, and pray on that pas-
sage if you would like.
The focus of the p r a ye r
v i g i l i s t o contemplate the
sacred mystery of Jesus’ death
on the cross and what it means
for us as Christians today to be a
part of that event.
I pray this will be a mean-
ingful experience for those of
you who participate and it will
deepen your connection to our
God who gave His one and only
Son to die for YOU.

We Get Letters
THANK YOU for your generous donations and support of
our outreach ministry for February. When we delivered the
donations, the coordinator said they had 450 students in that week
and we could see that the shelves were growing sparse. Needless
to say, your generous donations and the support of a Thrivent
Action Grant were much needed and much appreciated.
Food insecurity ranges from having limited access to fresh,
quality foods to not having regular access to food and having to
skip meals. This impacts many of the low income and first
generation college students in our community, as well as students
with children and families. 42% of all UC students suffer from
food insecurity; in Riverside, that number is 62%. R’Pantry has
been operating at UCR since 2015 to help provide students with
the food they need as well as with resources and knowledge about
nutrition and health.
Thanks again for your donations and support!

Straight from the Saxiest Man Alive
A s music was our theme, Bonnie Thomson started
our meeting with a reading from “THEN SINGS MY
SOUL” about Isaac Watts. It related a life spent writing
hymns that touched many hearts, many of which have
been in the Lutheran hymnals for years. She finished with
Galatians 6:14.
A truly interesting morning was spent with Dick
Boyum. A saxophone aficionado, he told us the history
of this relatively new instrument – invented by Adolph
Sax, a Belgian, in 1846. Sax worked in Paris, the center of
musical instrument innovation and production. His adap-
tation to the ophicleicle, a large brass instrument, resulted
in the first saxophone. The ophicleicle was a brass horn
that he changed by making the mouthpiece the same as a
clarinet – with a reed. Over the years Sax worked on and
improved many instruments, and in consequence many of
the manufacturers came to resent him. His changes came
so quickly that the manufacturers could not keep up with
them. And despite his genius he died a pauper.
Then Dick presented part of his collection of saxo-
phones. His first sax was a 1921 B-flat soprano sax, gold
plated, given to him by his father. The second was a 1924
sax given to him by his step-father and is silver and gold
plated. This is a key of C saxophone that he usually uses
in church. Others include a tenor sax, a baritone, and one
owned by Rudy Weidoff – a ragtime musician who it was
said could make the sax laugh and cry.
Thank you to whoever left
the Starbucks coffee in the
coffee drawer. By offering
it as an opportunity draw-

$28.00.

A t midnight, the dogs, cats,
and rats rule Venice. The
Ponte di Ghetto Nuovo, the bridge
that leads to the ghetto, trembles under the weight of sacks of
rotting vegetables, rancid fat, and vermin. Shapeless matter,
perhaps animal, floats to the surface of Rio di San Gi-
rolamo and hovers on its greasy waters. Through the mist
rising from the canal the cries and grunts of foraging pigs
echo. Seeping refuse on the streets renders the pavement slick
and the walking treacherous.
It was on such a night that the men came for Hannah.
Hannah Levi is known throughout sixteenth-century
Venice for her skill in midwifery. When a Christian count
appears at Hannah's door in the Jewish ghetto imploring
her to attend his laboring wife, who is nearing death,
Hannah is forced to make a dangerous decision . . . the en-
tire ghetto population will be in peril.
Meanwhile, far away in Malta, Isaac is worried about
Hannah’s safety . . .
Back in Venice, Hannah packs her “birthing spoons - (Continued on page 16)

Serving Riverside in 2017 April’s Focus: PATH OF LIFE MINISTRIES
Presented by Jay Fiene
F ive hundred years of Grace in Action - amazing.!
In commemoration of our history Jay has selected PATH OF LIFE MINISTRIES for April’s Focus.
Using 500 as the “magic” number, let’s each of us add 500
pennies, 500 nickels, or 500? (or their equivalents), to our offerings during the Month of April. A collection jar will be
placed in the Narthex for the change, bills, or checks (made out to Eden with Path of Life on the memo line).
Path of Life runs three facilities in Riverside.. The first is
the only Emergency Shelter now available, and includes services to help the homeless find jobs and housing. The second facility is a Family Shelter. Several more services are available
at this shelter, including case management, life skills, and laun-dry. The third includes Path of Life Church.
Jay also suggests that in addition to contributions, members
can become mentors for the youth being served there through Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
April 2017 Page 16
I went there primarily to
spend some alone time with
God, to be in silence, to read,
and to prepare my heart and
mind for the season of Lent. All
of which I did.
As you may imagine, when
one has a call/vocation/job
where one is pretty much on call
24/7 there can be times when
retreating for self-care and
refreshment is necessary.
I take these Sabbath times
not only for my own well-being
but I also take them for the well-
being of this congregation.
W h en ev e r I r e tu r n I
endeavor to impart some of
my learning through conversa-
tion with you and through teach-
ing in my sermons.
I pray that, for both you and
I, my time away will result in
enrichment and a yearning to
know more about the God who
loves us beyond measure.
As your pastor, I thank you
for your love and support as I
hope that as I grow in my faith
and knowledge of God you may
be encouraged to grow in yours
as well.
Blessings,

THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE is a gripping historical page-turner,
enthralling readers with its suspenseful action and vivid depiction of
life in sixteenth-century Venice. Roberta Rich has created a
wonderful heroine in Hannah Levi, a lioness who will fight for the
survival of the man she loves, and the women and babies she is duty
-bound to protect, carrying with her the best of humanity’s
compassion and courage.

i or I Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences
i g*G I
32.Those who believe that they can be certain of their salvation because they have indulgence letters will be eternally damned, together with their teachers.
33. Men must especially be on their guard against those who say that the Pope's pardons are that in the inestimable gift of God by which man is reconciled to him.
34. For the graces of indulgences are con-cerned only with the penalties a sacra-mental satisfaction established by man.
35. They who teach that contrition is not necessary on the part of those who in-tend to buy souls out of purgatory or to buy confessional privileges preach unchristian doctrine.
36. Any truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without indulgence letters.
37. Any true Christian, whether living or dead, participates in all the blessings of Christ and the church; and this is granted him by God, even without in-dulgence letters.
38. Nevertheless, papal remission and blessing are by no means to be disre-garded, for they are, as I have said [Thesis 6], the proclamation of the divine remission.
39. It is very difficult, even for the most learned theologians, at one at the and the same time to commend to people the bounty of indulgences and the need of true contrition.
Our Lord has written the
promise of resurrection,
not in books alone, but
in every leaf in spring-
time.
