Being Christian

567-8195 Tues. – 7:00 p.m. Muecke’s Home

June 29th & 30th, 2013

WELCOME to everyone, especially our guests.

Your presence is important to us.

St. Paul’s is an evangelical Christian

congregation, embracing historic Christian

teaching on all doctrines, centered on Jesus

Christ. Our desire is to bring the Gospel both

to those who are searching for answers to the

meaning of life and to those who desire a

closer relationship with God. We here at St.

Paul's have chosen to align ourselves with the

teachings of the Lutheran Reformation, due

to the clarity with which these help us to see

the true meaning of God's Word.

Specifically, St. Paul's is a ministry of the

Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, one of

America's truly biblical churches!

• Members and guests: please fill out an

attendance card and place it in the

offering plate to indicate your presence

today. For Holy Communion, please read

our confession and indicate your

agreement with our beliefs by checking

the box next to the names of those

communing.

• Those sharing our beliefs, especially from

parishes in fellowship with us, are

welcome to receive.

• If you desire Holy Communion but hold a

confession differing from that of this

congregation, please speak with a Pastor

or an Elder.

• Non-communing, baptized children are

welcome to come to the table for a

blessing.

Please note: Half the inner circle of individual

glasses in each tray contains water with one

drop of communion wine for those hesitant to

drink larger amounts of wine. Those glasses

with wine are rose in color. 2

FAMILY PROMISE OF WESTERN WAUKESHA COUNTY The Board of Service and Mission Outreach is excited to report a new mission opportunity for St. Paul’s! It is Family Promise of Western Waukesha County. It is a program that teams up with congregations, volunteers, the business community and other local agencies to provide shelter, meals and support services for homeless families. The goal is to work with the families to achieve permanent housing and sustainable independence. We will begin by asking for your help in filling up the "Houses for Change" by the end of June which are located in the narthex. The estimate is that there are 105 persons that are homeless in Western Waukesha County at any given time (30 pre-school age children + 30 school age children + 45 parents/guardians). Please find more information in the narthex. You can also go to their website-www.fpowwc.org/

They have teamed up with Feeding America (the food broker that we use) to donate food items near the selling date to a local food pantry and we were contacted to be the recipients! There are 5 different stores (the 3 in Oconomowoc and the 2 in Wales) that we will pickup from every Tuesday and Friday. They also plan on doing fundraising for us in the future! If you want to find out more or would like to help pickup the food, please contact Mary Hickenbottom at 414-333-3421 or at [email protected]. God is great!

MOVING HELP NEEDEDMOVING HELP NEEDEDMOVING HELP NEEDEDMOVING HELP NEEDED Jane Zenner (church member) is in need of moving help. She is only moving the distance of

LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEARLIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEARLIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEARLIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR Elijah felt all alone and despaired of his life (1 Kings 19:4, 10). Then God whispered (19:12b). He

promised the destruction of Israel’s enemies. He promised Elijah was not alone. Do you feel

discouraged because of the seeming triumph of so much evil? Listen to the whisper of God’s

promises. They contain more power and hope than rock-splitting winds or mountain-shaking

earthquakes. Prayer: Lord, give us faith to trust in the whisper of Your promises.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL ALL CONGREGATION

Worship Service on August 25th

10:30 am in the Sanctuary This special Worship Service in which we ask God to bless the upcoming school year and we will have a special blessing of the backpacks service in which ALL school-age children of St. Paul’s will have the opportunity to have their backpacks blessed. We will also be installing Mr. Jonathon Picklemann as Teaching Principal of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran School. This will be the only worship service that weekend and will be followed by our annual Pig Roast and Picnic which will be a fundraiser for the 7th graders to earn money for their South Dakota trip in fall of 2014.

Time to Grow will begin on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. We are excited to introduce a new

children, youth and adult Bible study called “Answers in Genesis”. This three-year program

covers the entire Bible in chronological order. It provides answers to the issues that confront

today’s culture through the media, school, friends, etc. It also provides a thorough

understanding of the authority and primary teachings of Scripture. All ages will be equipped to

defend the Bible, and become conformed to the image of Christ, as they apply God’s Word in

their everyday lives.

Key Concepts:

• The Bible is Trustworthy - We can trust all of God’s Word.

• God’s Attributes - God’s attributes are displayed throughout the Bible.

• Chronological/Historical Teaching - The Bible presents true history, not just “stories.”

• The Bible’s Redemption - God’s plan of redemption is woven throughout Scripture.

• Apologetics - We must be ready to give an answer for what we believe.

• Life Application - We are to live in light of what the Bible teaches.

Along with the adult Answers in Genesis class led by Pastor O’Donnell and Vicar Steve we will

also have a study on the Holy Gospel of St. Matthew led by Pastor Borgman and a women’s study

called Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World led by Angie Scharnell and Carrie O’Donnell.

The excitement is building for Time to Grow to begin so look for your opportunity to sign up for a

Bible study soon!

We are also looking for mentors to lead our children on Wednesday evenings. If you would like

more information on how you could serve in this way, please contact Angie at angieschar-

1 Kings 19:9–21 (ESV) Behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

Galatians 5:1, 13–25 (ESV) For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

St. Luke 9:51–62 (ESV)

When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
